This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Little brother got me a 3080 for my birthday. I have a 3 year old custom build. I am so confused as to what I need to switch out?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:43 AM PST

    Hi everyone,

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/gXLkjp

I would greatly appreciate any help that can be provided. See above for my current build which contains many parts I have upgraded after buying this exact PC from newegg: https://www.newegg.com/cyberpowerpc-gamer-master-2021/p/N82E16883230273?Item=N82E16883230273. (i.e. I upgraded the 1060 to a 1080, etc.)

My little brother is amazing and got me a 3080 but now I'm not sure what parts in my current build I need to switch out. Do I need to basically build a whole new pc around it? Do I need a completely new case, motherboard, etc? I'm very new to pc building and Im worried some/all of my parts I currently have are incompatible with the 3080.

Edit: Thanks so much for the extremely helpful replies guys. You all are giving me much more direction and less anxiety with this as I originally had no idea what to do!

Yet another thank you letter to this subreddit.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 10:41 AM PST

I finished swapping motherboards, and installed my new processor today. Thanks to this subreddit and the BitWit youtube channel, it has been an "easy" experience and very rewarding. The amount of love and willingness to help others on here is amazing, and it seems like you all just want the best for the OP.

Again, thank you guys and girls alike, and have a nice day.

Finally Finished My First Ever PC Build, Thanks to Everyone Here for the Help and Advice!

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:31 PM PST

This subreddit has been an amazingly helpful community and I've absolutely loved sharing advice, opinions about different PC components, and lamenting how difficult it is to get a new graphics card with everyone. Actually building the PC was a breeze but shopping for parts and understanding which components fits your needs and budget was made much easier by this subreddit and /r/buildapcsales, which was crucial during the summer when there were basically no power supplies at MSRP.

I initially completed my first build in the summer but waited until I could finally get an RTX 3080 before finishing and posting my final build. I was lucky and managed to get an MSI RTX 3080 Ventus OC from Newegg about a week ago.

Pictures of build, setup, and obligatory pet photo in this album: https://imgur.com/gallery/BBvw1Qg

    Parts List: Components:

Case: Lian Li Lancool II Mesh RGB White

    Motherboard: MSI MAG X570 Tomahawk

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 3900x

CPU Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360mm (Yes, I know the tubes should be pointed down, the cooler is still silent and I'll move it if air bubbles start to form)

Graphics Card: MSI GeForce RTX 3080 Ventus OC

PSU: Corsair RM750 RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB 4x16 GB DDR4 3200

Memory: 1 TB Sabrent Rocket PCIe 4.0 and 2 TB Inland Performance

    Case Fans: 2 Corsair LL140s and 3 QL120s

I highly recommend the LianLi Lancool II Mesh as a great mid-sized ATX case for under $100. Cable management was an absolute breeze, the build quality was solid with pretty much all metal, and the airflow and thermals are superb. The only downside is the extra $15 for the USB-C front I/O panel cable and some of the screws are really tight. There's also a gap under the front mesh panel but I just 3D printed a plug though some tape works too. I will always post on /r/buildapcsales when this case comes up to recommend it.

I luckily managed to snag an RTX 3080 when Newegg restocked about a week or so ago. The MSI Ventus was not my first choice but I actually like the look of it the most since it doesn't require an ugly splitter, unnecessary RGB, or have an MSRP way above the FE. I originally had a 1650 Super as a placeholder that I'm going to put in an NR200P for a second build for my girlfriend.

Only regret is probably all the Corsair RGB fans. They look nice but aren't worth the price and cable management. It seriously took me twice as long to wire the fans, RGB hub, and Commander Pro, and make everything look neat than it did to put together the rest of the computer.

Please let me know if you have any questions about any of the components or peripherals. This is a great community with lots if enthusiasts who are also willing to help out newcomers like me, which is pretty rare.

    3100 vs 3600 upgrade path

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 06:29 AM PST

    Hello all!

I have been putting together a new Ryzen build. I play on a 60hz tv with decent input lag and play mostly single player games. I would use it for productivity tasks rarely.

I was debating between the 3100 and 3600. On one hand the 3600 is obviously better. But the 3100 seems to get well above 60fps avg and around that for lows which is really all I need. I can get the 3100 now and upgrade in a year or two and save money over time.

The mobo is B550 so that isn't an issue for the future. I will be upgrading my GPU when the new gen pushes the prior gen prices down.

Is that reasonable or are there arguments for going with a better cpu now?

If I use a 144 hz monitor, but only get about 80 frames on some games will that cause micro sttuttering?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 02:01 PM PST

I am thinking of buying a 144 hz monitor and in some games I can go up to 120 FPS if I lower the settings a bit but that's it. I get about 70-80 FPS on most games, so will I get microstuttering? I think there should be an option to adjust the monitor settings to 75 hz when I am playing certain games.

How does onboard 5.1 or 7.1 sound work when the back panel only has three 3.5mm jacks?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:39 PM PST

Hi Folks. Dumb question, or maybe I'm really missing something...

My old PC has a nice Xonar DG soundcard with 5.1 analog outputs, which connect to my speakers and mic with five 3.5mm cables just fine, and I want my new PC to do the same. Great. (Edit for clarification: my old sound card can do 7.1 output, but I have a 5.1 sound system with a mic, so I'm using four 3.5mm cables to make connections.)

I've found several B450 and B550 AM4-socket mainboards with onboard ALC1220 (great!) and ALC1200 (just fine) codecs with five 3.5mm jacks on the back panel for analog cables just like my old sound card. Great!

But I have also found boards with the same ALC1220 and ALC1200 codecs, which also support 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound say their specs, but the back panels only have THREE 3.5mm jacks: Audio In, Audio Out, and Mic In. So am I missing something? How would one get 5.1 surround sound output from a mainboard with only 3 jacks, only one of which seems to be Audio Out?

As an example, here's the ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming-ITX/ax: "7.1 CH HD Audio (Realtek ALC1220 Audio Codec), Nahimic Audio" and only 3 jacks on the back panel. And here's the ASRock B550 Steel Legend with the same ALC1220 codec and 5 audio jacks.

Thanks for helping me figure this out.

Noob question: Does a higher wattage PSU take up more power even when the power draw is less?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 07:57 AM PST

If your system is using 400W with a 550W PSU will upgrading the power supply to a 650W one mean more electricity costs?

Does the same happen with a GPU? If the GPU requires a lot of power is it better to disconnect it and use the integrated one with the CPU if you want to save costs? E.g. when you are not gaming.

I wanna change my case any good recommendations?

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 05:53 AM PST

I have a fractal design meshify g and I don't like how it has no psu shroud or a lot of room in the back for cable management. I've been looking through Newegg for the past couple weeks for a case and honestly all these options is too much. So can anyone point me to a good case for a decent price?

Desperate for help. Birthday present for daughter not working.

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 11:13 AM PST

Apologies for the long post, but it's a long story. TLDR at the end.

In March I decided to let my 11 year old daughter build her first pc for her birthday. Went on pcpartpicker and ordered a bunch of parts. Parts showed up and everything was gravy, played Astroneer with her for 8 hours. She was ecstatic. Next morning I get a call at work that her computer isn't working. Got home to find the EZ Debug light for her CPU was on. So begins my nightmare.

System specs: CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 (now Ryzen 5 3600XT) MOBO: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX (now MSI B550 Tomahawk MAG) Power supply: Corsair R750x Ram: Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB 3200MHz GPU: MSI Radeon 5700XT MECH OC SSD: Samsung 970 Evo 1TB M.2 NVMe

I've tried flashing the BIOS, unplugging everything but the motherboard and CPU, swapping out the ram for a different set from my pc, swapping the power supply, swapping the hard drive. I contacted MSI for help and they told me to RMA the motherboard, which I did.

I didn't want to wait to get my daughter's computer up and running for an RMA to come back, so I ordered an MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk and a Ryzen 5 3600XT, thinking I would give my wife the B450 and the 3600.

Once again I installed everything with a new motherboard and processor, everything fired up fine and we played for about 6 hours. She shut the computer off and came back later and it turned on fine. Next day, that wonderful EZ Debug light was back on for the CPU.

I unplugged everything. I removed the CMOS battery and let everything sit disassembled for a day. Reinstalled everything and the computer worked! I then updated her Steam library and shut her computer down. I turned it back on and it all worked still. I opened up her system specs and took a picture just in case and I shut her computer down again. This morning I go to show her mother that it's all fixed and that stupid red EZ Debug LED is on again and I'm about to tell my daughter that her computer will never work and she should stick to console gaming forever.

I'm desperate for any and all help you guys can give me. I've talked to everyone I know that nows anything about computers and they're all lost. I've built about a dozen computers in the past and I've never run into this before.

TLDR: built a birthday pc for my daughter in March. Worked, then wouldn't after shutdown. Tried lots of things to fix. New MOBO and CPU, still no dice. Manufacturer just wants me to endlessly RMA, so no help. Need help. Please. It's been 7 months of troubleshooting.

Bios menu automatically boots up without me pressing anything

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 12:35 PM PST

I'm using the MSI B550 Gaming Plus mobo, just to see if that matters

I built my first pc ~3 days ago and since then I've been trying over and over again to boot up windows but I can't get past the bios menu. I've set the boot order to USB key first and all of that but nothing seems to work. I'm beginning the think it may be something with the mobo or some other technical problem.

If this has happened to anyone or if you know a solution please please please leave a comment

(I also created a boot key from a Mac but will try again with a boot key download from a windows machine)

Decent small, quiet pc for Baldur's Gate 3

    Posted: 03 Nov 2020 01:38 PM PST

    https://CA.pcpartpicker.com/list/dDGPVc

Working on a smaller PC (current case is a zalman z9 plus), aiming to have it be somewhat quiet, not too expensive, and the goal is to play Baldur's Gate 3

Wondering if I've got reasonable parts for this. Avoided a Ryzen 5 3600 with a 450 mobo for cost, hoping the i5-9400 is sufficient. Unsure if the PSU is overkill. Chose 1 SSD over an SSD plus HDD to simplify things. Also don't know if I'll need more fans/cooler

    Any inputs? Thanks!
