The First* Laptops without 3.5mm Headphone Jacks: ASUS ZenBook 13/14

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 11:15 AM PDT

Well, it's happened. The ZenBook 13/14, for yet another generation, have dropped the 3.5mm headphone jack from full-size laptops. First* = there may be earlier laptops; please link below if you know of any prior laptops.

The affected notebooks, though ASUS' model names are pure nonsense, so please do correct me:

    • ZenBook 13 UX325[E / J / JA]
    • ZenBook 14 UX425[E / J / JA]

Notebookcheck | ZenBook 14 UX425E "World's Thinnest 14-inch Laptop" Review. ASUS is either the harbinger of a major mainstream transition (type-C audio) or prepared to frustrate its customers.

    Ports:

    • 2x Thunderbolt 4
    • 1x HDMI port
    • 1x USB-A 3.1 Gen1
    • MicroSD card reader
    • Headphone jack

    Included Accessories:

    • Type-C to headphone adapter
    • USB-A to RJ45 adapter
    • Notebook sleeve

    More information:

    • Internal chassis shot
    • ASUS quote: "It's also the world's thinnest 14-inch laptop to feature a full set of I/O ports — including HDMI and USB Type-A — so you can enjoy versatile connectivity wherever you are."
    • ASUS explanation: "Asus explains this by the fact that a growing number of consumers use Bluetooth headphones anyway, and the 3.5mm jack is not a purchase condition - unlike the presence of full-size USB and HDMI."
    • USB-IF Publishes Audio over USB Type-C Specifications [2016]: " The industry, led by Intel and some other companies, has been mulling about replacing the traditional 3.5mm mini-jack connector for some time now. The main motives for replacement were necessity to simplify internal architecture of devices by removing analog and some audio processing components from the inside (which leads to further miniaturization), minimize the number of external connectors, improve power management as well as to add smart features to headsets and other audio equipment."

Why can’t my computer also be a WiFi router?

    Posted: 10 Oct 2020 10:33 PM PDT

It just dawned on me that in order to connect to the internet, my computer needs to connect to a WiFi router - or a hotspot via my iPhone.

Why can't my computer just have its own (affordable) built-in internet connection like a cell phone that's roaming?

Why is "roaming" data (forgive me if I'm butchering the terminology) so much more expensive than hooking up to a WiFi router? What's the specific element that makes it pricier?

After all, isn't a WiFi router just a little piece of plastic/hardware that sits in the corner of my living room? What about "putting the WiFi router inside my computer" drives up the cost so much?
