    Simple Questions - October 30, 2020

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 05:11 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Managed to get a 3070 - they delivered it at the wrong address

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:12 AM PDT

I don't even, the first time I get an up-to-date card, was pumped up as fuck

    I'm going to lie down

edit: there's at least recognition of someone fucking up, that at least makes me feel better

edit: guys, I'm hugging the parcel right now, all sorted!

Just re applied thermal paste to my GTX 1080

    Posted: 29 Oct 2020 09:54 PM PDT

It was probably one of the most terrifying things ive ever done. But dam it sure helped.

Borderlands 3 used to make the GPU run at about 83-85 degrees with the fan speed at Over 3k rpm (aka jet engine)

Now it runs at about 70 degrees and 2200 RPM. I think it even lowered my CPU temp a smidge too just from being cooler.

Just wanted to get that out there, feeling pretty good about my temps for once!

I think my CPU is my new bottleneck with my 3070

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:41 AM PDT

So I got a 3070 and so far in cod warzone and rdr2, I am unable to reach the full 144hz on my 1440p ultrawide. It hovers more in the 90-110fps range. Taking a look at my resource monitor, it seems like my cpu is bottlenecking me. I'm basing this on the fact the cpu is around 90%+ while GPU is around 30%-40%. My current CPU is an i7-7700k which I know is a few generations old, but my understanding was cpu's didn't improve that much from generation to generation. Does it sound like the cpu is my problem? And what might I look at upgrading to in the future to get the most out of my 3070 and most bang for my buck?

    Thanks

I want to get an rtx 2060 because I’m trying to get a card before January, and I don’t think the 3060 will be out by then

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:51 AM PDT

However, there is someone listing an RX 5600xt for $150 on FBMKTPL,

So, should I get an RTX 2060 for $300, a 3060 for $300/$350 (if it even drops, or if I F5)

    OR, get the 5600xt

Some talk me off this useless RGB cliff

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 07:01 AM PDT

I've been looking at doing a new build, and RGB components/overall looks keep driving my build cost up. For example, I could easily get a 140mm noctua air cooler and be fine overclocking to some extent, but i keep looking at the corsair AIO 240mm RGB. How can I knock myself off this rgb/looks train?

Built my first PC and put in a temporary 970. Got lucky and grabbed a 3080 a couple weeks ago. Finally 100% complete.

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:13 PM PDT

Parts minus the GPU, because they weren't out yet when I made the list. Cable management leaves something to be desired.

Pro tip for anyone else getting an Arctic Liquid Freezer II 360 with a Fractal Design Define R6 case: the cooler does not actually fit on the top. It will crush your RAM. I had to rethink the build and place the Arctic on the front of the case, changing my airflow and making it back to front. Works fine, although it required me to pull out every single disk tray, so I'm currently just rocking the 1TB Samsung SSD directly on the motherboard.

Appreciate all the advice I got here!

    Hey you. Thank you!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:15 AM PDT

I built my first PC just last week. I had a lot of parts advice, building tips and just general questions when I was unsure. The help went beyond the PC itself. I got some great advice on cable management, desks, software etc. Not to mention most questions have already been answered which I found, so many indirectly helped me.

I by no means have the best PC, setup etc, but I'm really proud of myself since I made it 100% myself and I just wanted to thank every single person here.

Rooms a bit tight so I can't get great photos. But I attached some for the almost end product. Just need a good chair and I want to attach some LED strips behind the desk.

Interested in building a PC for Gaming/Streaming, but no clue where to start

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:25 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about building a PC for a while, but just have no knowledge on the subject. I know about PCpartpicker, and it's all really daunting. I'm not sure if this is the place to ask for general suggestions from a starting point of literally nothing, as compared to having a question about a specific component. My cousin and brother both have friends who make their own builds that I could ask for help when the time comes, but I'd love to get any help from the community that I could.

I'm generally good at saving my money, so I'd be willing to venture into high end cost range, and am generally thinking that I'd wait until the RTX 30 series is more readily available, and plan the rest of the build in the meantime. If anyone has any suggestions on brands or benchmarks I should consider, I'd appreciate it!

    How best to upgrade PC?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:46 AM PDT

    Hi guys,

I have a 6 year old PC and with the arrival of the latest GPUs I'm thinking about either building a new PC or upgrading what I've got. I'm looking to get into 1440p gaming probably, with the option to utilize a VR system later if I decide to buy one. I'm looking for your thoughts on what I could reuse from my current PC and what I should definitely upgrade? I'd probably look to spend no more than $1k just to artificially limit myself but I have a bit of money to spare right now. I probably would wait a couple months to see the difference between AMD and nVidia GPUs but would like to start thinking about it now so I can be on the lookout for sales or deals.

1080p 144hz upgrade parts sanity check!

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 08:27 AM PDT

Aight fellas, I just ordered a Red Devil RX5600XT + Ryzen 3600 + 16G RAM @ 3200. My goal. Playing at 1080p with decent quality. Is this a solid purchase? I play mostly WoW and just needed a solid upgrade for at least 2-3 years.

    What's your opinion?

Why are you getting a RTX 30X0 or RX6000? [serious]

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 11:25 AM PDT

Just wondering why the demand is THIS high. Literaly everyone I know who can afford it is buying, this sub is also kinda flooded with buyers.

Not that many games require them right now, I don't know about productivity related reasons tho. Also GPU tech is advancing relatively fast compared to other hardware (as far as I know).

I do understand how these cards offer good price/value. It just feels kinda overkill, and I believe they will be outclassed rather soon.

Then again I will buy RX 6000 cus I wanna use ray tracing in Cyberpunk 2077.

TL;DR: Why are you buying? What are you gonna do with it?

Edit: OK, everybody doing 4k 144Hz things

So who actually managed to get a 3070 or 3080?

Upgrading build to 2020 with RTX 3070

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 12:06 PM PDT

Hello! It is time to 2020-secure my PC and I've got a few questions. Click here for my current specs (+ one 500GB Samsung SSD)

I mainly do gaming at 1440p and want a good experience in games like WD Legion, Red Dead 2, Cyberpunk etc. My screen is both G-sync capable and 165Hz. I managed to snag a RTX 3070 yesterday and that brings up a few problems.

    1. The RTX 3070 PSU recommendation is higher than what I've got. This is the most pressing concern. My existing PSU is gold-certified and after several online calculations it seem to be more-or less fine to be running the 3070. WDYT?

    2. The PCI 4.0 x16? My motherboard only has 3.0 x16, is this a problem or is it backwards-compatible?

    3. The Ryzen 5 1600 seems to be a potential bottleneck. I think it is to be expected with the 3070. My motherboard is B350 but can support the newer 3000-series after a BIOS-update. I've been looking at the R5 3600, good idea? Or should I wait and see how it performs?

My budget isn't big but not small either, I want to keep as many of my existing parts as possible. Thanks for your time!!

Why do people only mention wattage requirements of components?

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 11:53 AM PDT

I've always wondered this. People always say that x gpu need 300w or y cpu need 120w but no one ever mentions the current/amperage required on the 12v rail to run those parts. I mean, it's extremely simple to calculate too but many people have never been told about this and so don't look in to it.

I know that just buying a decent psu will generally cover you, but there are still power supplies out there that either just aren't up to scratch, or split their 12v rail through multiple overcurrent protections or physically separate rails.

I first looked in to this a long time ago when a friend blew out a psu after upgrading. Turns out that for whatever reason, the 12v rail had been split in to 2x18a rails rather than 1x36a and the new parts overloaded the psu.

    2080 Super Overheating

    Posted: 30 Oct 2020 02:25 PM PDT

Hello, my 2080 super is running very hot in games and I don't know why. It is especially bad on Warhammer II where it can get to 85 degrees at around 75% GPU utilisation. (It is worse on the campaign map than the battle map).

2080 Super is a very powerful card but when I play Half Life Alyx it says insufficient GPU memory, and if I play on anything other than low settings it gets stuttery.

I don't think it is the airflow as I still get temps on 82 degrees even when I take off the front panel and put a large fan in front of it. I changed fans to Noctua but still get high temperatures. Temperatures at idle are around 29 degrees

I swapped it out for a 1070 TI and got to 69 degrees when playing at 4K high on warhammer total war

I have updated to the latest drivers - 456.71

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

No idea what to do.. any help would be appreciated :(.

I tried installed throttlestoo but it didnt seem to help (it had POWER in red though under limits?)

    GAMES I WANT TO RUN

Roblox, FS17, FS19, PUBG, War Thunder, Minecraft, PC Building Sim, Train Station Renovation, House Flipper

    PROGRAMS I WANT TO RUN

    Visual Studio, Chrome
