This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I think a processor upgrade will solve my problem. Am I correct, and if so, what replacement would you recommend? Thanks for any help!

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 06:12 AM PDT

UPDATE: Thanks so much, everyone. Blown away by how helpful this has been. Going to read through all of these again before I pull the trigger, but thinking of starting with these two upgrades and seeing how that works:

    Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz C16 DDR4 DRAM Memory Kit

    WD BLACK SN750 1TB SSD

If this sounds stupid, please let me know. Sounds like it might put me on the right path, though...

    Hi all,

I use my desktop almost exclusively for photo editing. I bought my current PC built by a local guy who I no longer know how to contact. I would love to be able to edit my photos more quickly, but am not 100% sure how to go about it. The issue is the lag time experienced when applying edits and merging files. Actions that I want to be instantaneous can take 3 seconds to 20 minutes depending on the action.

Sometimes I want to merge (10) 85mb files, or swap large files between editing programs that eat a ton of computing power. I have given up on trying to run both programs at the same time on my current machine. What I have now just can't keep up. My guess is that upgrading the existing Ryzen 5 1600 w/16GB installed RAM is the right course of action. Is that right?

Adding 500GB-1TB of internal storage would also help with my backup redundancy. I know only enough to be dangerous, but am not afraid to crack open the case and get my hands dirty. Just need to be pointed in the right direction. I have no idea what my budget should be in order to do a good job. If the answer is a few hundred bucks, then that's great (I don't expect the solution to be $59.99 at Best Buy). Sincere thanks in advance for any help.

EDIT: Thanks u/17jwong and u/LosWafflos Here are what I think are the pertinent specs:

Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1600 33 °C Summit Ridge 14nm Technology

    RAM: 16.0GB Dual-Channel Unknown @ 1199MHz (16-16-16-39)

    Motherboard: Micro-Star International Co. Ltd B350 TOMAHAWK (MS-7A34) (AM4) 29 °C

Graphics: U32J59x (3840x2160@64Hz) ATI Radeon RX 560 Series (MSI)

    Storage: 119GB SanDisk SD8SN8U-128G-1006 (SATA (SSD)) 30 °C

931GB TOSHIBA External USB 3.0 USB Device (USB (SATA) )

Optical Drives: No optical disk drives detected

Audio: AMD High Definition Audio Device

Possible to read CPU & GPU temps using only hardware ? (maybe with a driver if need be)

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 05:25 AM PDT

    Basically the title.
I am a software engineer and love to tinker and do these kinds of diy stuff, so I should be perfectly capable of creating this (unless there is no way of pulling the data).
I am thinking about having some 5-7" LCD in my PC, display temps like CPU, GPU and Coolant (have a custom loop) temp. My idea would be a small microcontroller (esp32, raspi, something like that) reading temps using a hardware interface. What i don't want is pulling this data from some program like hwinfo or something similar, for a couple of reasons:

    - I run mostly fedora(gnu/linux), but dual boot windows, so any software-first approach would likely not work or suck at compatability.

    - I dislike software-first approaches for these kinds of things, software bugs out, behaves weirdly in different environments(environments change), is not cross-os compatible etc. In my experience hardware-first gives less headache in the long term.

I could maybe write a little driver, that is cross-os, but I'd rather not. Do you have any idea hwo pulling the data could be achieved using only hardware (maybe driver supported hardware) ? I have not found anything helpful regarding this, as most systems rely on some sort of software running in the OS.

Is it a crime to not use a 4K monitor with RTX 3080

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 05:06 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have a 3080 coming god knows when and am currently tossing up what monitor I should pair it with. Heard a lot of people saying that the 3080 doesn't stretch its wings until 4K - which I understand - however, due to the price of 4K 144hz monitors I am still considering 1440p 144hz.

So is the price difference for a 4k monitor really worth the extra $$ ?

Looking for the least expensive 1TB SSD you can find.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:06 AM PDT

I'm looking for the least expensive 1 TB SSD you can find. Preferrably from Aliexpress and others.

The best price I found was a caseless model for 74€ incl. shipping (~US$ 88) on Aliexpress

But we can definetely do better than this.

Performance is not an issue here right now. Just the cheapest you can find.

    Thanks.

Careful, stay away from Newegg - They are enabling scams vendors - Especially with the current Ladex Gold PSU sales

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 02:23 PM PDT

    https://www.newegg.com/YCW-Tech-LTD/about

I took advantage of the deal on 9/28. The vendor on the page I swore said shipped from US. But I couldn't be 100% when I saw shipping from China. After a long battle over tracking information for weeks, I finally get an item in the mail and its a damn keychain - https://imgur.com/ksXZWtp

I have tried multiple times with Newegg to get this refunded. They keep trying to push off responsibility to the vendor. Well look now at all the reviews from others on 9/28. They got the same bullshit scam key chain. On the phone with Newegg now demanding a refund or I issue a charge back. This company has been a vendor since 2019, they have literally 0 excuses for this company to still be a vendor authorized on their site and they don't wasn't to take any responsibility for it. I was scammed but Newegg is responsible for every single order on their site, they authorized the vendor. And looking at other posts, they say the same things, said shipped from the US.

Stay away and make sure when you get a tracking number for the new PSU sales, that it is being shipped from the same vendor you saw when you ordered. If its this company instead, cancel and run immediately.

    Edit full story:

Bought on 9/28, given tracking number (tracking number A). Saw it was from China. Called and asked them what was up, page said it was from the US. But in the end I said fuck it, lets see what happens.

2 weeks later - No update. I ask them for the vendor to provide an update or cancel the order if they can't. Newegg sends an email to vendor, vendor sends me an unrelated tracking number (Tracking number B) with a package shipped 5 days prior before I made my inquiry. Asked them to email the vendor to confirm the shipping address and if they couldn't to cancel the order, vendor replied with just Tracking Number B.

I see TN B is due in a week so decide, lets see what happens.

Watch TN B, once it leaves the Chinese port, Tracking Number A updates. So I assumed one was for Chinese shipping and the other for US shipping.

October 20th rolls around get a keychain in the mail. Didn't think anything other it, saw it said China but I didn't clue in. Tracking number A after all said in transit from Alaska still.

Today rolls around, tracking number A updated as delivered in Alaska. I issue a request for a cancel/refund, they say they have to give the vendor time to respond and even then its up to the vendor if they issue the refund. I mention that I have requested 2 times for a refund/cancel of the order, how many chances do they need, but in the end I said fuck it, whats two more days.

Then I clue in, wait...keychain. I check the 2nd tracking number they gave me, sure enough delivered October 20th.

So I call Newegg, their excuse Vendor has to issue the refund. So I told them either they do it or I issue a charge back. So they started the process to refund and I should have it in 3-5 days, gave them until next Wednesday then I start the process.

And no point in this process has Newegg tried to take any responsibility for allowing this third party vendor on their site for over a year with these reviews and these problems until I threatened them. Hell I imagine Newegg had to create the page that was originally up that said it was shipped from the US, so as far as I am concerned they assisted in the scam.

I haven't ordered from Newegg in 6 years, now I never will again. I see their new Reputation is well earned.

Is an SSD really necessary in a (budget) PC?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:06 PM PDT

If I'm planning on building a budget gaming PC, what would be the benefits on spending the extra money on an SSD, and what would be the consequences of just sticking with a hard drive?

Edit: Would it be a cheaper alternative to use just an SSD instead of both?

    Pin damage on 3080?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:02 AM PDT

My 3080 got stuck in the motherboard because the PCIE latch wouldn't let go so I had to wiggle it around to finally get the latch to release. The pins all have minor scratches that I assume are wear and tear at this point, but does this look like an issue, or is it fine? PC still boots without a problem.

Edit: looks like it's supposed to be like that and I'm just a panicky Nancy. I'll settle down, thanks for the responses.

What 144hz monitor would you recommend?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 12:20 PM PDT

Hi all. Looking to upgrade to the future here from my age old 60hz monitor to a 144hz as I've seen the differences and it makes my 60hz monitor feel like one of those old box monitors we used to use.

Does anybody have any recommendations? Currently using a 29" LG Ultrawide Monitor x2 and have about £300-£350 to spend. Will push to £400 if its really worth it. (UK Based.)

Many thanks and have a great weekend.

Will Intel Rocket Lake be worth waiting for with Ryzen 5000 imminent?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 04:25 AM PDT

Currently on a i7 6700K clocked to 4.8Ghz on a Asus Strix Z270E motherboard and a 2080 Ti with 32GB DDR4 3200Mhz, I'm feeling like now is time for a upgrade on the CPU and Motherboard front.

My PC is just used for gaming, nothing production or streaming, I like the look of the Ryzen 5000 series but I'm curious if Intel Rocket Lake would be worth the wait.

I'm aware that Intel will probably be stuck on 14nm as opposed to Ryzens 7nm but i'm also under the impression that the best gaming processors as of now are still Intel with the i7 10700K and the i9 10900K.

So I'm currently thinking either a 5800X or a 5900X or potentially whatever Intel brings to the table start of next year.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and lets avoid brand wars.

Can I make my external drive a HDD?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 06:58 AM PDT

I have a WD Elements 4TB external drive and was wondering, can I save a few dollars on my PC build by not getting a really fast 1 TB ssd and just get a fast 500 GB one and make my external drive a HDD? The exact product numbers are WDBU6Y0040BBK-WESN and as I said it is a WD Elements 4 TB external so would this transition be possible and how would I go about doing this? I don't want to open up my drive and void the warranty if this isnt even a viable option.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

Yes What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

PC for 8 year old son to play along side me.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1080p 100 frames or so on Fortnite.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    700.00 max

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6DddXb

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I have the RX580 out of my old build I was wanting to use on his PC. Does anyone have any recommendations on cheaper/ better value parts? I am pretty much at my max budget and wife is not happy. He said he wants it to light up pretty. Do you guys have a suggestion on a pack of RGB fans? I have never dealt with RGB before.

NOTE: You do not have to follow this format, but please be sure to answer these questions. Please do not ask to simply be given a build. You are welcome to delete this section.

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 04:46 AM PDT

I want to upgrade my current build, and I got 300€(maybe I can stretch it to 400€).

I can't decide which parts I should upgrade, and there's where I need help.

Mainly I play arma 3, red dead 2, rust, dayz, warzone, and some single player titles like witcher 3, dark souls 3. The idea is to keep playing this games but with good looking graphics and decent fps.

The pc parts would all be bought in Portugal.

    MoBo for RX580/Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 01:13 PM PDT

    Hi Everyone,

I am a complete newbie to pc builds, this will be my first rig. So sorry in advance if the question is dumb or I should have looked it up somewhere rather than ask here.

After some research I decided that I'd pick a RX 580 Sapphire with a Ryzen 5 3600. I was then wondering what motherboard I should pick to make the best out of these?

I intend to mostly use this PC for gaming at 1080p. Along that, I will get 2x 16GB RAM and an SSD, if that matters for MoBo choice.

    Thanks for any help

    Gaming TV

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 07:11 AM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the right sub to ask, but i didn't know any other place so here we go:

My father in law wants to buy a new TV to use for gaming and well ... watching TV.

He only plays singleplayer games like Assassins creed, Tomb Raider etc. and his PC is not the strongest. (It barely runs those games at an acceptable framerate)

A local shop recommended this: gu43TU8079UXZG

He doesnt care about the price and i already told him that hes not going to be able to run anything on 4k. I also assume that the "slow" reaction time of ~15ms in gaming mode wont affect him.

Should i just tell him to buy it or is there anything that speaks against it?

    Kind regards

Where to get low cost parts..

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 02:46 PM PDT

Hello. I have recently run into medical issues that leave me in a forced "work from home" situation from the foreseeable future, with the caveat that my salary has been significantly reduced and I am no longer "entitled to company property to perform my work".

Problem is.. my work requires a computer and I do not own one.

Anyways, not looking for a pity party but just laying out the foundation for my question which is... Are there places to find cheap parts? Do people ever just sell or give away old PCs?? My budget is honestly very low but I don't need anything fancy. As much as I'd love to play video games with my friends, my real goal is just to get something that can stream/cast my screen through wifi without glitching out.

anyone have any good resources they could point me towards for finding cheap or charity-cost pieces?

edit: I am in Southern Inland California

    Building a PC for gaming

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 02:12 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I'm currently in the process of building a PC primarily for playing games like the total war titles. I wanted a PC that can run them all on ultra settings with a little bit of extra give. Here is what I have so far...

Case - THERMALTAKE V200 2.0 TEMPERED GLASS RGB EDITION GAMING CASE

Does anyone have a realistic time that the 3070 will drop next week? I'm trying to get one for a build and was wondering. EST time if possible
