This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    Noob mistake

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 01:34 AM PDT

Hi guys, just wanted to share my stupidity from few days ago.

Here I was, unboxing my Dark Rock Pro 4 for my 3700x to replace the stock jet turbine it comes with. All good and well, after some elbow grease and swear words, I was able to fit the monster in my case. It probably was the hardest part to install in this whole new build.

Now, I was expecting some amazing temperatures but just when I go into the bios the CPU reaches 70 degrees but I blame it on "it'll settle in Windows". After a Cinebench run that brought it over to a toasty 95 degrees I blame the Arctic Mx-4 application and start disassembling the whole thing again pretty pissed at this point.

Well, what do I find when I remove the cooler? The bloody protection film on the cooler. Yes, I did the same mistake one guy in this sub did few months ago. I felt ashamed and stupid.

I corrected my mistake and not I never get more than 62 degrees in Cinebench.

A story of happiness, disappointment and redemption.

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Edit: Thanks kind strangers. It's my most liked post and my first awards.

How do we feel about 1080p in 2020 especially in max settings? Is it worth to move up to 1440p?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 10:54 AM PDT

I had an old rig and recently upgraded.

    What I have now

    32gb Ram Corsair Vengeance

    AMD Ryzen 7 3700x

    750W RSX Corsair PSU (GOLD)

    Samsung 970 EVO 1TB

ASUS TUF Gaming x570 plus MB

    27" AOC G2 1080p 144HZ Monitor

1060TI RTX (Going to be upgrading this as I do not know what to get )

Should I invest in the 3070? And if i were to move up to 1440p, will there be a drastic change in graphics?

I play competitive games like Valorant / Warzone and looking forward to play Cyberpunk 2077 on the highest settings.

Finally got an ssd, how do I just move windows onto it for a boot drive?

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 10:10 PM PDT

Title is pretty self explanatory. I'm got an ssd for a boot drive and smaller programs and all the videos I'm looking up shows programs that clone the whole drive. How do I only move windows and boot programs onto it?

    RTX 3080 OC

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:23 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I recently bought an Asus RTX 3080 Tuf. I tried a few OCs with Msi Afterburner, I settled with +150 core, +400 memory & 119% power limit which gave me a 5% increase in Port Royale. After stresstesting with Msi Kombustor for 15min my Temps never surpassed 62C. It seems to be a stable OC.

Can I run this OC constantly or should I only switch to it when playing games & are there any disadvantages if I'm running this OC constantly like damaging my GPU?

    Thanks and stay safe.

First build complete after 5 hours

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 07:26 AM PDT

I thought I was prepped going into it, but I had some issues with assembling the CPU fan, as well as putting the other case fans in too soon. After a short scare of no posting, I just needed to reinstall the RAM firmly.

I did some deal hunting on EBAY, Mercari, Offer Up, Facebook Marketplace and Amazon Prime Day. The extra RGB fans and the CPU Cooler were early birthday presents, so I don't "technically" know how much they cost, but I can estimate. Everything was new except for the GPU (6 months used). It's for video editing, not super high end gaming, hence the lower graphics card and higher RAM. Only 500GB of storage right now, but I'm looking at some Seagate Barracuda HDDs

    The Build

    • CPU - Ryzen 3600 ($160 on Facebook Marketplace, so no tax)

    • GPU - ASUS Dual GeForce GTX 1070 ($170 on Mercari. $196.14 after shipping and tax)

    • MOBO - ASUS Prime x570-P ($117.99 on Amazon Prime Day. Listed at $127.99, but I got $10 off from "shopping small" before prime day. $129.20 after tax)

    • RAM - G.skill Ripjaws 2X16 at 3200 mHz CL16 ($86.81 on Ebay. $95.06 after tax)

    • Storage - 500GB WD Black sn750 ($62.99 at Microcenter. Price matched NewEgg/Amazon on Prime Day. $68.97 after tax)

    • Case - Lian Li Lancool 2 Mesh RGB White ($104.99 at Microcenter. $114.96 after taxes)

    • PSU - Seasonic Focus+ 550W 80+ Gold Fully Modular ($30 on Offer Up. Cash, so no tax. They had been trying to get rid of it for months)

    Extras

    • WiFi 6/Bluetooth 5.1 PCIe Card - Ziyituod AX3000 ($25.73 on Amazon Prime Day. $28.17 after tax)

    • CPU Fan - Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO (Birthday gift, but it goes for around $50, so probably $54.74 after tax)

    • 5 X 120mm RGB Fans - EZDIY-FAB (Birthday Gift. They were going for $45 for a while, now they are $33. Don't know how much they got it for. Let's go with the higher number and say $49.26 after tax)

    Still need to buy

    • 2 TB HDD - Should be about $55, or $60.21 after tax.

Total $822.50 paid by me, and ~$104 gifted. Adding the extra hard drive brings this to about $986.71 after taxes and everything

The Arctic Liquid Freezer II is awesome! Replaced AMD Wraith Prism stock cooler.

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:58 AM PDT

I have done some heavy overclocking on my GPU which increased temps inside my case. I have great airflow and fans, it is just very hot now. On top of that I enabled Precision Boost Overdrive and AutoOC on my Ryzen 3700x to help with my rendering workflow speed. These two combos had my Wraith Prism running full blast while my CPU was in the upper 70s, and therefore super loud.

I replaced the Prism with the Arctic Liquid Cooler II 240 yesterday and holy smokes my PC has been dead silent all day and never gone over 70C! I was worried it would be louder than it is so I'm incredibly happy.

I will also note, unless you're pushing way more power into your components as I am, the Prism is plenty good enough. Until I did my overclocking my temps were fine and the cooler rarely ramped very high once I'd set the fan curves.

    B550 Motherboard Selection

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:51 AM PDT

Looking for the perfect b550 motherboard to purchase. Was looking at the MSI Tomahawk B550 but it doesn't have onboard WiFi. Can someone recommend a board that does have it thats similar to the Tomahawk? (For AMD 5000 & NVIDIDA 3070)

And Why shouldn't I go with an x570? I've heard they're just more complex and not necessarily "fleshed out" yet..

Sorry for the questions/inconvenience, any help is much appreciated!

Never upgraded my PC before and need some advice

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:55 PM PDT

I built my first and only PC build around late 2016, and it's been serving me very well. It honestly still plays newer games fine, though I'm planning to give it a major upgrade at some point later next year, since some newer games are starting to get slower performance. My specs are currently an MSI RX 480 4gb, Intel i5 6400, 16gb of DDR4 RAM, an MSI Z170-A Pro mb, and a 600 watt psu.

When I do upgrade, should I just grab a new GPU, or should I save up more and replace the GPU/MB/CPU?? Anything else that would have to be upgraded?? In terms of expected performance, I want to play the newest games at Very High settings in 1080p 60fps through the next 5 or so years, not necessarily with all extra features turned on, though if that's feasible I'd be down with that. (I may also be doing some recording/video editing, my current setup hasn't been too bad for that). I'm looking at saving up around $600 to $700 for the upgrade. I would probably be upgrading mid-to-late 2021. Thank you for the help!!

Is it worth it? can i run it?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:38 PM PDT

So i am building my first computer and i have been learning about pc hardware for the past week

So after lots of research i made a parts list that i think should run anything/any game possible, where i live this setup costs around $900 without peripherals, but my question is:

    1. is it worth getting it?
    2. is there any smart changes i should make?
    3. is the system compatible or can it have any issues in the future?
    4. is it up to date ? or are the components old and could be outdated in the next few years.

5)and the most important question: can it really run 99% of high end games on 60+ fps? or smt similar?

    Specs:

    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 3600

GPU - MSI GTX 1660 super ventus

    RAM - x2 8gb sticks (16 gb in total) ( i think 2600 mgh)

MOBO - MSI Tomohawk b450 max

    Wireless Network adaptor - PCIe Tp-link 300

Case - Cooler master mb520 (includes 600w power supply built in it)

    Storage:

    HDD - W.D. 1T

SSD - m.2 256gb (not included in final price because i didnt chose one yet)

    Thanks for helping!

Edit: here is the pcpartpicker link, it isnt accurate but this is what i found, you can edit it if you found a more accurate part , the real list is in this post, the link has similar but not the exact items bec i didnt find them all https://pcpartpicker.com/list/3tZBmk

New PC wont boot to existing OS.

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 09:55 AM PDT

A few days ago I built a new computer while cannibalizing parts from my old one. One of those parts I cannibalized was an M.2 NVMe 2TB drive that contained the OS from my old computer. My new motherboard is the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master which has 3 M.2 slots. I pop it into M.2C, (The third slot that fully fits my NVMe drive. I go to boot it up and it wont recognize the OS on the M.2 drive. It says something along the lines of "please insert bootable media and try again". I took the M.2 drive out and stuck it into the M.2A socket which is slightly bigger than the 3rd socket. Same problem. Any help would be most appreciated.

    Rig update!

    Posted: 15 Oct 2020 11:18 PM PDT

I've finally gotten every single part/upgrade I've been looking for in my build! Also I've rotated my aio to have the tubes face the right way. Purple now floods my room when I turn the lights off 😂 pics

Here's some advice for those looking to use these fans: you'll need argb cable adapters for the fans if you don't have the lian li hub or Asus Aura proprietary ones. Other than that the daisy chain works amazing.

RAM passes memtest on stock but fails with XMP on?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 01:39 PM PDT

    Hello,

My ram will pass memtest86 with no errors, but with XMP on it gets tons of errors. Is this normal? I thought memtest86 tests RAM at its highest specified speed (in my case 3600 mhz), so how is turning on XMP affecting the result?

    Thanks

    Phanteks P500A fan configuration?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 01:36 PM PDT

I'll be building a new machine soon and it looks like I'll be going with a Phanteks P500A as I want a quiet airflow case with room for a Noctua NH-D15 with a fan lifted for RAM clearance. I considered the Lian Li Lancool II Mesh, but the P500A won out.

I don't need RGB so I've found the non-RGB version with Arctic P14 PWMs to be the best value (D-RGB is more expensive than non-RGB+3x P14).

EDIT: I was originally planning on buying 2 Arctic P14s to go with the bundled SK 140 fans, but it turns out the bundled fans on the non-RGB are not PWM :( The non-RGB with 4x P14 is only slightly more expensive than a P500A D-RGB, so that's probably what I'll get as I prefer a better airflow/noise ratio over RGB. So my 2x P14 PWM PST and 2x P14 PWM configuration would be:
Header 1: Top intake P14 PWM PST linked to middle intake PWM P14 PST linked to bottom intake P14 PWM non-PST
Header 2: Rear exhaust P14 PWM

Have I understood PST correctly, in that I can daisy chain 3 fans to the same motherboard header with 2 PST fans and one non-PST?

Provisional specs in case I'm missing anything important in terms of compatibility:
    - Phanteks Eclipse P500A BLACK (non-RGB w/ some amount of Arctic P14 PWM fans)
    - Asus ROG STRIX B550-F GAMING WIFI
    - Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black
    - Corsair 750W RM750x
    - AMD Ryzen 7 5800X
    - 2x8GB Crucial Ballistix DDR4 3600 MHz CL16
    - Asus TUF Gaming GeForce RTX 3080 OC Edition
    - 1x HDD and 2x SATA SSD from an existing machine, NVMe maybe next year

Original questions before realising bundled fans are not PWM (no longer relevant):

Question 1: How good are the bundled SK 140 fans? I haven't found any reviews with direct comparisons, but I figure I should buy 2 P14s, use them for top 2 intakes and use the bundled fans for bottom intake and rear exhaust. In case the SKs aren't as efficient I figure I can just run the bottom intake at a lower speed to maintain an equivalent noise level, so my only concern is slightly less airflow to the GPU (3080 TUF OC), but will it really be enough to make a difference versus another P14?

Question 2: How should I connect my fans? My motherboard will be a Strix B550-F which has the following headers:
    - 1x CPU
    - 1x CPU OPT
    - 3x Chassis fan
From what I've read, it's unlikely CPU OPT can be controlled independently from CPU, so all case fans will be run from chassis fan headers. Am I correct in thinking that if I buy 2 P14s, I can buy one with PST and one without and wire them like the following?
Header 1: Top intake P14 PWM PST linked to middle intake PWM P14 (one PST fan is enough, right?)
Header 2: Bottom intake bundled SK 140
Header 3: Rear exhaust bundled SK 140

First build, what do you think?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 04:51 AM PDT

Hi, my old computer is 10 years old and a new configuration is finally due. Should be sufficient for 1080p at 60fps on medium details for several years. I still want to wait for a new graphics card, so a temporary solution is planned. What do you think?

    • Toshiba P300 Desktop PC 2TB, SATA 6Gb/s
    • SanDisk Ultra 3D 500GB, SATA
    • AMD Ryzen 5 3600, 6C/12T, 3.60-4.20GHz, boxed
    • G.Skill Aegis DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-3200, CL16-18-18-38
    • Sapphire Radeon HD 6450, 1GB DDR3, VGA, DVI, HDMI, lite retail (Is the card sufficient for Sims?)
    • Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite
    • Scythe Mugen 5 [Rev. B]
    • be quiet! Pure Power 11 500W ATX 2.4
    • be quiet! Pure Base 500

    Ryzen 5 1600 and RTX 2060 Monitor

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 01:09 PM PDT

TLDR: is getting a 1080p 144hz monitor worth it for the RTX 2060? (when I already have a 75hz)

I currently have a Ryzen 5 1600 and GTX 1050ti. However, I am thinking about upgrading soon to a RTX 2060 because I'd like to be able to play games I play now on ultra/high, and want to make sure I can safely run upcoming games (like cyberpunk, BOColdWar, etc.) at a decent fps/settings. I was looking around to see if people said the r5 1600 would bottleneck the 2060 but people seem to say it wont, so I will get to see the impact of the new gpu but not sacrifice anymore performance than I already have in cpu heavy games/environments. Right now I have a 21.5inch 1080p 75hz monitor which I happy about, but I am interested in having a bigger screen and my current secondary screen is a different resolution, size and whatnot. So I was thinking I could move my 75hz to be my secondary screen and make the new 144hz my main monitor. However, does the 2060 even make enough fps to justify going from 75hz to 144hz? I could say easily 60hz to 144hz would be good, but I was hoping you guys would have some opinions on this. From what I've seen I'll be getting ~90-100 fps on most games, 300+ on a couple, but nothing under 70fps on anything. (but if its going down that low I could also just sacrifice some graphics to get the fps closer to 144)

    Thanks!

    Crucial MX500 vs P1 vs P2

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 11:33 AM PDT

So in my country the MX500 costs 99€, the P1 costs 91€ and the P2 costs 104€ for 1TB.

My question is why is the P1 cheaper than the MX500? Isn't the P1 much better?

Also, is the P2 even worth it at that price?

If the Adata XPG SX8200 Pro is 129€, is that worth it over the crucials?

    Nvidia 3070 Overkill for 1080P?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 02:16 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

Just was wondering if a 3070 would be overkill for a 144hz 1080P monitor? Or is it worth it IF I potentially get my hands on one just based off of the price and what I'm getting? Should I just get it anyway? And yes, I know it's almost impossible to get. Or any other GPU recommendations?

Planning for my first build. Advice needed!!

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:41 PM PDT

Alright everyone. I've been reading these for a few months and I've wanted to build a PC for many years. It's going to be simple use but I do want it to be overkill for my simple needs for the possible increase of gaming with my 5 year old daughter. Right now it's simple FPS like Fornite with her and Microsoft office for myself but I grew up on Warcraft and CS so I'd like the PC to have some decent options as I begin to explore games again.

I went to pcpartpicker and simply started with the "Modest AMD Gaming Build". I hear a lot of good things about Ryzen and GeForce so those stuck out to me. I'm not the savviest with the plethora of options out there so if this recommended mid-build is trash please let me know. I'd like to keep it under $1000 before adding OS/monitors/keyboard/etc. I'll likely be pulling the trigger in a few months but I wanted to set something in stone to look forward to. Thanks everyone! You guys are the best!

Switching from MacBook Pro to PC - 1st PC Build - Help Needed

    Posted: 16 Oct 2020 12:31 PM PDT

I'm trying to convince my husband to have us build a new PC instead of purchasing a new MacBook Pro to replace our current 2011 MacBook Pro and 2010 iMac, but I need to create a PC build to exceed the performance and reliability of a new MacBook Pro. We'll be using the new PC for gaming (games like Elder Scrolls Online & The Sims), streaming, light photo and video editing, and programming for future projects. Below is what I have created so far but I'm sure there are better options. I'm working with a $2k budget for the PC and monitor, but I still want to stay as low as possible. Please let me know if there are any changes I should make or any advice in general.

*Side Note: I may wait for the restock of the 3080, but I'm just not sure if I'm patient enough.

    Thanks!!
