    Any RX 580 users here?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:53 AM PDT

I'd like to know if anyone's using a 450w PSU here. I've got a RX 580, it started on first boot, and when exposed to high load, system turned off and didnt display on next boot.

2080ti is gathering dust, please help

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 11:30 AM PDT

    Hi,

Typically right at the start of the COVID lockdown my pc started crashing in games. I had no problems when using the PC for work etc but as soon as I jumped into a game I would recieve a black screen after a few mintutes and be forced to hard reset. Initially I thought it was an issue with my GPU(Asus strix 2080ti) so I RMA'd it and spoke the guy on the phone about what the issue was etc. They were able to stress test it and run it in some of the games I mentioned I was having trouble with with zero issue and returned it to me. This left me then to troubleshoot but in the meantime I put my old gtx 1080 in and have been using that for the past few months with no issue at all.

I have tried uninstalling drivers with DDU, swapping the slots in the PSU that the GPU is plugged into, reseating the RAM and running with one stick at a time, all with no luck. The only thing that got me somewhere was underclocking and undervolting the card which got me a few mintues more gametime in Call of Duty but would ultimately crash after a while. This lead me to think it was the PSU itself and a power delivery issue as the 1080 works fine and doesnt need as much power and the bigger draw when gaming might be stressing the PSU somehow? It is a 1000w evga supernova gold rated so on paper its solid.

So any help or light on the matter though would be massively appreciated as I am quite stuck! Anyone else had anything simillar or is there something else I can try that I havent so far?

Grateful for any advice on upgrading my pc!

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:04 AM PDT

Good day all, I'm hoping to get some advice for my PC setup.

I've had my PC for 4 coming on 5 years now and I think I'm overdue an upgrade in most departments. I mostly use my pc for gaming (a mix of both single player and multiplayer games) and whilst my pc has never been anything to write home about, I would like it to keep up with more of the newer games available. I'm not in the position to be able to completely revamp my build in one go, so I would like some help on which parts I should focus on first with the hope that next year I could improve the rest of it.

I'm concerned that newer parts would not be compatible with my current parts and if that is the case, please let me know and I can return to the drawing board.

I should note that I didn't personally build the PC myself and used a company for that, so if there are strange choices I made when picking the parts, put 6that down to me being fairly clueless about PCs at the time (and evidently I still am!)

    My current specs:

Processor: AMD Athlon X4 860K Quad Core CPU (3.7Ghz/FM2+)

    Motherboard: ASUS A68HM PLUS FM+ (M-ATX, DDR3, USB 3.0, 6Gb/s)

    RAM: 8GB Kingston DUAL-DDR3 1600Mhz (1x8GB)

    Graphics card: 4DB AMD RADEON R9 380x - 2 x CVI, HDMI, DP - DX 12, Eyefinity

    Storage drive: 1TB SATA-III 3.5" HDD, 6Gb/s, 7200RPM, 32MB cache

Power supply: corsair 550w VS series

Thank you for your time guys and gals, have a blessed day!

Is valorent a cpu intensive game and what would the i5 6600k run valorent at with a gtx 1070 8gb 16 fab of ram? What would the FPS be at?

Monitor loses signal when gaming. Should I just buy a new Graphics card?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 05:43 AM PDT

Hey guys I've had my current setup for 3 years now. Never had an issue with it but recently while playing genshin impact my monitor would lose signal and just go black. I can hear the game still running in the background. I find that it often happens when there's a bit of stress on my pc e.g. my game would start lagging in fps a bit before it happens. Doesn't happen with simple games like league of legends. So I've tried integrated graphics to see if its a gpu issue but my integrated graphics just don't work at all. I also think my warranty has expired anyway by now and for some reason I have an invoice for every other part except the gpu (silly me).

My question is: Should I just buy a new gpu!! If so, please suggest! I really don't mind as cyberpunk is coming out soon anyway but I don't know if I would be bottle necking? Here are my specs:

Are these temperatures and voltages for AMD Ryzen 3900 alright ? [ I'm new to pc building ]

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:50 AM PDT

I recently built my pc with the following components :

    • mb : MSI MAG x570 Tomahawk
    • cpu : Ryzen 9 3900 X
    • ram : G.Skill Trident RGB (8*2)
    • gpu : Inno3d GTX 1660 super

However I believe that my CPU core temperature is abnormally high even on idle state.

The temperature keeps on fluctuating between 55-60 degree celsius and voltages are around 1-1.4 V. in idle state. The ambient temperature here is 25-30 degrees.

Are these temperatures/voltages fine, or there is something wrong ?

    Edit :

I am using stock AMD cooler (Wraith Prism).

Also what could be done to lower the temperatures ? [ Apart from buying another cooler]

    RTX 3080 for 1440p144hz?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 10:35 AM PDT

I'm not very experienced with knowing what's good enough for resolutions beyond 1080p, so if I wanted to play AAA games on max/close to max settings, would a 3080 be able to do that in 1440p144hz? Or do I absolutely need a 3090 for that?

How dusty does a P400a case get?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 08:02 AM PDT

Currently i have an NZXT H500 case, which gets quite dusty inside with just its 2 exhaust fans.

Been thinking of getting the P400a case, ive read that it gets less dust than the H500 due to the front intake fans and mesh front ( also better airflow).

Is it correct that the P400a will get les dust build up?

Configuring HDD with old data on it, to new build. What mistakes can be made that will wipe the data off it?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 06:51 AM PDT

I'm about to install windows on my first build. I have the HDD with all my data on it from previous pc, unplugged, only the SSD is plugged in from which win 10 will be installed, the HDD didn't even come up on BIOS to be booted from since it was never plugged in.

At this step in this popular tutorial below, he now hooks up his HDD to the power and configures it so that it is now recognised, after having installed windows installed on the SSD. Does anything need to be watched out for to keep my data safe from being wiped? As long as I configure the pc to boot from the SSD, there is no chance of my data being wiped from the HDD right?

What's the optimal storage for games?

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 10:36 AM PDT

So I went from using a 1TB SSD as storage to a 6TB spinner. The biggest grip I have is the noise as I have a Thermaltake P3 case that's completely open. I was thinking about the possibility of doing an SSD drive pool using something like Stabilebit's drive pooling software. Other than being expensive by purchasing 2-3 2TB 860 EVOs, what other foreseeable issues would I run into? Would the SSD performance suffer in general using a software like this? I run it on a home server and it works perfectly for 4 4tb storage drives.

Unplugged computer, now it won’t boot

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 10:36 AM PDT

I unplugged my computer from the outlet last night for a second and this morning it won't boot. Lights and fans turn on and all that, debug LED on CPU. I don't even know where to begin troubleshooting this. Nothing changed. What could be the problem?

Edit: Solved! I did this https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/computer-wont-turn-on-after-being-unplugged.2105452/ and used a different spot on my surge protector. Not sure which is responsible, maybe the other slot burned out or something!

    GPU Dying??

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 09:33 AM PDT

Hello! My monitor has been flickering once every few minutes when it is static, so I thought that my monitor might be dying. I connected my PS3 to the monitor and waited a few minutes but there was no flickering. I then tried connecting another monitor I had (which was used for my PS3) to my PC and realised it flickered as well.

However, using my second monitor, I realised the rate of flickering is lower. As in it flickers less in the same few minutes I spent waiting. Does this mean my GPU might be dying and if so how can I be sure or if it is some other part? Thank you for reading my post.

Making <$600 System for Brother and Want Community Opinion

    Posted: 24 Oct 2020 11:36 AM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

He's going to be gaming. I have a 1080p 144hz monitor for him already that he'll be using. He wants to start with games like Apex, and Warzone. I'm sure he'll probably play some other shooters as well and later other games as he figures out what he likes.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

He has a 1080p 144hz monitor so as long as it can reasonably run over 60fps in most games.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Looking at less than $600

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I think I already have most things figured out. What case he uses is subject to change since he's still looking at what he likes in that department. Note that the reason I have an RX 480 8gb is because that is the card that I already have for him from before I upgraded. I had it paired with a R5 3600 on the same 1080p 144hz monitor I am giving him and it ran just fine for me, got over 60fps in a lot of titles. My question is if the performance can be similar in the R5 2600.

Also, if there's any more value I can extract by going different but similar components, I'd be open to hearing that as well. Also if the price of windows has come down or there's a better way to get it than the $100 price I paid 6 years ago, that would be sweet.

Finally, he will need a keyboard definitely and headphones probably, so make any reasonably priced recommendations for that too. I already have a mouse for him.

10x Local Police PC's with a total $20k budget, thoughts?

    Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:30 PM PDT

Hey, r.buildapc! I was given a very interesting opportunity recently. I have close-close-family in our local law-enforcement who knows I build PCs for people, and quite well (to his standards at least). Recently, our local police station was administered a grant of $20,000 for 10x PC's and tossed it into the air for local IT companies to take the bid. Whoever gives the most temping offer gets to supply the station + some $$$. The lower the offer and the better the performance = the winner.

My question to you all is- is this doable? I am competing with a local computer/IT company who has placed a bid for $19,820, which includes as following.

    Optiplex 7080 Micro 10x = $9,017.90

here is the Optiplex 7080 Micro, for specs

    (includes KB+M)

Microsoft Office Prof. Plus 2019 10x = $1,317.20 (HOW IS THIS SO CHEAP???)

    Dell AC511M Sound Bar 10x = $350.60

    Dell E2420H 20x = $3,070.20

    Dell MDS19 Dual-Monitor Stand x10 = $1,536

    Adobe Acrobat Pro 2020 x10 = $4,498.80

    Belkin Mousepad x10 = $32.10

    GRAND TOTAL: $19,822.80

    .

Now, what I have come up with so far is...

    pcpartpicker

Kind of overpowered, but there aren't any 6-core 12 threaded AMD processors that have integrated graphics, plus just about anything is an upgrade as they are on 4 core 4thread old Optiplex machines as of right now. Still working on options as I don't know how necessary a dedicated GPU is, but it has dual HDMI output and there are 2 monitors each with HDMI. /shrug

Keep in mind, I'm building 10x of these systems, so as of right now with a grand total of $1629.02 x 10 is... GRAND TOTAL: $16,290

I am confident enough in my ability to assemble and deploy 10x simple workstation computers, however, I do not know how to tackle that Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2019 pricing. As far as I know, I think that registered resellers of Dell/Windows/whatever have special offers for customers and this could be wrong but good lord, that's some competitive pricing. I am not afraid to admit that I am not familiar with business pricing and how all that enterprise and all that works, I am used to building workstations and gaming rigs; this is my largest undertaking yet.

I appreciate absolutely any and all thoughts on this matter. The 2 monitors are an absolute must, the dual storage, and the 16GB of RAM. There will be several users logged in and using each system within a day so I was told that those are a must.

If this post gives any traction, I will update this thread with any new updates I receive, in the coming week I'm going in for a discussion with the person in charge.
