    That B-roll goodness:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2hd37mSbCY

Just finished my first computer build which I have named "Land of the Ryzen Sun" inspired by my favorite travel destination Kyoto Japan. The computer will mostly be used for video and photo editing. Everything worked well from beginning to end of the build process and definitely was an enjoyable experience!

The BeQuiet! 500dx computer case had plenty of space to work in and has a very clean minimalist look to it.

    List of Parts:

    AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 3.8 GHz 12-Core Processor

MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI ATX AM4 Motherboard

    Noctua NH-U12S chromax.black 55 CFM CPU Cooler

    Team T-FORCE DARK Z 64 GB DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory

Samsung 860 Evo 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

Samsung 860 Evo 250 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Seagate

FireCuda 520 1 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive

Zotac GeForce GTX 1660 6 GB GAMING Video Card

Be quiet! Pure Base 500DX ATX Mid Tower Case

EVGA 550 W ATX Power Supply

    Noctua NF-F12 PWM chromax.black.swap 54.97 CFM 120 mm Fan

Future plans: I would like to upgrade to one of the newer graphics cards that just came out. I ended up reusing a Zotac 1660 from my previous computer to test and see if it would run better with a better processor since Adobe Premiere tends to be CPU hungry (my previous processor was an I7-7700 with 32gb of ram). Even though it does run noticeable smoother with the Ryzen 9 3900x, it's still not where I want it to be once I start color grading 4K footage. Lastly I would like to add another nvme drive and a modular power supply to clean up the wires on the backside.

The LG OLED CX does not work properly with the RTX 3080. It chroma subsamples at 4k 120Hz. G-Sync is completely broken on the LG BX, CX, B9 and C9 models

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 02:48 PM PDT

    Hi,

Since I cannot crosspost here, I will repost my original post from r/nvidia. This post is for everyone who has considered buying an OLED 4k TV from LG to game on with the RTX 3080. I'm not trying to get tech support here but rather try to get attention for this issue so LG or Nvidia will fix this.

I have recently bought an 48" LG OLED CX for the 4k 120Hz HDR gaming experience on the RTX 3080. Since I haven't been able to get a RTX 3080 yet, a friend of mine brought his Zotac RTX 3080 over to my house to test and experience the 4k 120Hz TV. Well... it's been a pretty big disappointment. We experienced the following.

    • The LG CX will automatically chroma subsample at 4k 120Hz, meaning you will get 4:2:2 instead of 4:4:4. Everything is fine at 4k 60Hz. But at 4k 120Hz we noticed something is wrong with the colors. The chroma subsampling is clearly evident when looking at the borders of dark text. This is not some small issue because it pretty much ruins the 4k 120Hz experience once you notice it.
    • 4k 60Hz, 1440p 120Hz seem to be 4:4:4 with no subsampling.
    • We researched online and there are numerous reports confirming this chroma subsampling issue at 4k 120 Hz. (sources: https://www.avsforum.com/threads/2020-lg-cx%E2%80%93gx-dedicated-gaming-thread-consoles-and-pc.3138274/page-74, https://hardforum.com/threads/lg-48cx.1991077/page-103) Apparently only the CX models are affected, for the C9 models 4k 120 Hz 4:4:4 is working fine. I couldn't find a single piece of evidence that the LG CX is capable of 4k 120Hz 4:4:4 with an HDMI 2.1 input.
    • Since other TV models are not affected I doubt this is Nvidia's fault. It more points toward LG's side. When reading through the forums, it looks like this internal downsampling issue of an 4:4:4 input to 4:2:2 has been an issue for months, nothing has been done yet to fix it . It is even questionable if LG is aware of this and whether they will ever fix this.
    • If this is a software bug and is fixable by LG, this might get fixed if we bring enough attention to it. However, if this is a hardware bug (meaning the LG CX has never been capable of 4k 120Hz 4:4:4 with HDMI 2.1) I highly doubt this will get fixed before PS5 release and release of Cyberpunk 77 (or ever). I have yet to see a single piece of evidence that the LG CX is even capable of 4k 120 Hz 4:4:4 ...
    • G-Sync is completely bugged. We were forced to turn it off.

Until this issue and the Gsync issue (which is most likely on Nvidia's side and will be fixed with the new driver update) is resolved, do not buy the LG CX if you are expecting a true 4k 120Hz 4:4:4 experience, it is not acceptable with the 4:2:2 issue and you should not spend 1.5k or even 2k+ USD/Euro on this TV until LG has fixed this.

I have found a real image of a LG CX monitor with this issue from another forum that really shows how much a problem the chroma subsampling is (4k 120Hz 10bit, all pictures taken by Sixi82 from the avsforum, I am not taking any credit for them and solely using them to help resolve this issue):

    no subsampling:

    https://www.avsforum.com/attachments/img_4723-jpg.3038322/

    with subsampling:

    https://www.avsforum.com/attachments/img_4724-jpg.3038327/

You will especially notice this in PC mode when you play a game with text. The text just becomes a blurry, smeary mess at close distance, it's like having the wrong prescriptions for your glasses. At this price point 1.5k - 2.5k USD/Euro this is just unacceptable. There is no point of using this TV as gaming monitor if text becomes smeary at 4k 120Hz and even 100Hz and every other framerate other than 60Hz according to some in the forums.

    Apparently LG decided to cut the HDMI 2.1 transfer rate from 48 Gbits/s to 40 Gbits/s. But still 40 Gbits/s is still enough for 4k 120Hz 4:4:4 HDR (only needs about 32 Gbits/s for 4k 120Hz 4:4:4).

    EDIT:

I just want to clarify why this issue should not be considered some small inconvenience for LG and Nvidia but rather an important issue that might decide over massive future revenues:

    • The LG OLED CX will be a groundbreaking and a class definiting "monitor": first TV to support 4k 120Hz AND 4:4:4AND G-Sync AND HDR. This has never been done before. Unlike other 4k OLED models this makes the LG CX perfect for gamers.
    • Gaming on the LG OLED CX is from another world. Breathtaking colors, strong contrasts, low input lag. And all with features tailored towards gamers (G-Sync, high refreshrate). When i first tried the LG CX it opened my eyes. I had a matrix moment where I decided that I take the truth pill. I cannot ever go back to a non-OLED display. If you have never experienced that, you must try it, it is nothing like you have ever experienced.
    • If this chroma subsampling issue and G-Sync issue is not resolved, this will definitely break the LG CX for gamers, it is nothing more than an ordinary OLED TV then.
    • LG and Nvidia might potentially lose a huge market. I can totally imagine a future where gamer enthusiast's first monitor choice is an OLED monitor with G-Sync because it offers everything an IPS monitor has but with better colors, contrast, HDR and so on.
    • The revenue and profit margins on the OLED monitors will be probably much higher than the current IPS/TN/VA monitors and might lead to a significant revenue stream for Nvidia and LG.

    EDIT 2:

Things I have/others have tried to fix it:

    • Switch HDMI cables. I have tried with 2 different HDMI 2.1 cables (50 Euro each) that support up to 8k 60Hz
    • Switch between all kinds of different modes: SDR/HDR, PC Mode, 8 bit, 10 bit, done nearly everything.
    • G-Sync seem to work again when going back to an older driver version with RTX 2000 or older series.
    • Chroma subsampling primarily (or only) affects the LG OLED CX and becomes noticable at 4k 120Hz, 100Hz and 1080p 120Hz. 4k 60Hz and 1440p 120Hz are fine.

I just hope we bring enough attention towards these 2 issues. They will either make or break the OLED gaming monitor. If this issues persist the OLED gaming monitor market will probably die in its infancy and will never recover.

Although the B9 and C9 models do not have the chroma subsampling issues (don't take my word for it), the current model and only not discontinued model, the CX, has this issue which makes it quite important to fix it quickly with all the new RTX 3080 owners who want to upgrade soon with Cyberpunk 77 and other game releases

    EDIT 3:

John Archer just covered these issues on Forbes

    https://www.forbes.com/sites/johnarcher/2020/09/20/lg-oled-tvs-having-issues-with-latest-nvidia-rtx-30-graphics-cards/#513a5d57267a

    EDIT 4:

/u/true-logixx pointed out a small fix for the subsampling problem: Turn HDR on and Pixelshift off (3840x2160, 120Hz, 10bit, PC Mode). It still looks scuffed and subsampled, but a little less than without HDR. Not sure what type of subsampling this is. Settings: https://imgur.com/CXZUZoX

EDIT 5: To counterclaim that the HDMI cable is the issue (https://twitter.com/BigJohnnyArcher/status/1307760577775915008) : I think the strongest argument against that is that C9 has no subsampling whereas the CX subsamples with the same HDMI cable (DP to HDMI 2.1 adapter) and setup:

    (see people who testet that: /u/kasakka1, https://www.avsforum.com/threads/2020-lg-cx%E2%80%93gx-dedicated-gaming-thread-consoles-and-pc.3138274/post-60113799 , https://www.avsforum.com/threads/2020-lg-cx%E2%80%93gx-dedicated-gaming-thread-consoles-and-pc.3138274/post-60113596)

" Its not cable related. Atleast not for me. Tested 3 "8K" "4k120" UltraHighSpeed HDMI 48GBps Cables from different. All with the same result, as described in the article. therefor i believe the signal is transported as it should be from GPU to OLED. " Sixi82 Twitter

    " I own both a CX 48 and C9 65. Using the Club3D DP 1.4 + DSC -> HDMI 2.1 adapter on v1.03 firmware with a 2080 Ti:

    • C9 is ok at 4K 60 Hz, 4K 120 Hz in both SDR and HDR. Full RGB, no issues.
    • CX is ok at 4K 60 Hz SDR/HDR.
    • CX is ok at 1440p 120 Hz SDR/HDR. For some reason. The res/refresh rate combo is listed separate in the display EDID, no other 120 Hz resolution is shown like this.
    • CX is ok at 1080p 60 Hz.
    • CX is not ok at 1080 120 Hz.
    • CX is not ok at 4K 120 Hz SDR. It downsamples to 4:2:2.
    • CX is not ok at 4K 120 Hz HDR. It looks fine but there is something off about the colors when looking at the Rtings.com test pattern, colors look more muted somehow but in normal use the difference is hard to see. There seems to be a very slight difference in sharpness compared to 4K 60 Hz." by laxu

It also doesn't seem like that people who supposedly got the LG OLED CX to work have gotten any special kind of HDMI cable:

The Tech Chap@TheTechChap reply to @landongwright

"They're all much the same really. I just searched hdmi 2.1 on Amazon and picked one"

EDIT 6: u/fanslo had a chat with LG support (original thread). The LG support stated that their engineers are working on it. They promised to either fix this with a firmware update or replace the TV if they can't solve the subsampling issue. I'm not sure, however, if this can be seen as a guarantee that LG will fix it or replace your TV or if this is just a standard answer.

EDIT 7: If you are interested in following the progress of this issue:

I have created https://www.reddit.com/r/OLED_Gaming/ where I will give updates to this issue until this is solved.

Any differences between GPU brands? (RTX 3000 series)

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:17 AM PDT

Hi everyone. I'm going to build a new gaming desktop. Two stores I looked into have various types of brand available. One offers Zotac, Asus and Gigabyte and another offers Palit and MSI. Are there really differences on these?

Make usb-c better on custom PCs.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:53 AM PDT

Gpus and Mobo should have an internal Display port connector on the gpu and motherboard. Why? To enable motherboard video output ports. That doesn't seem important, but what is important is usb-c. Most motherboards have a usb c connectors, but it usually cant output video. The laptop market has already done this, now the desktop market needs to. Having an internal display port connector would allow usb-c's full potential to be reached. Since virtual link died, this jus makes more sense. Some cards and mobo already do this, just make it a standard feature. It could also enable video output through front i/o usb ports. Usb-c is the future, and the desktop pc space needs to embrace it. And with the upcoming USB 4.0 supporting 40gbps bandwidth, this is more possible than ever. they could even use a mini display port connection if space is a concern.

I eant to buy an rx 5600 XT but a friend says that it's the worst thing I can do.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 02:27 PM PDT

I want to buy a new graphics card to run (almost) every game at 60 fps at 1080p. For this I have 4 contenders: the gtx 1660 super, rx 580, rx 5600 xt and the rtx 2060. I saw a nice offer that has it new at 280 dollars when converted from MXN. My friend says AMD sucks and its better to buy an nvidia card. What should I buy?

I feel like I've overspent on my built

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 10:08 AM PDT

Really excited for my first build. Always wanted a PC and I can finally afford to build a respectable one. However, I'm a bit anxious about how much money I've spent and I feel like I've gone a bit overboard with it. Build and peripherals are as follows:

    Ryzen 5 2600

    $120

    Gigabyte B450M DS3h

    $86

Palit GTX 1660S Super Gaming Pro

    $260

    Patriot Viper RGB 8x2 16GB 3200Mhz

    $42

    FSP Hyper K 500w

    $43

    IDCooling Pinkflow 240mm AIO

    $86

    Razer Viper Mini

    $35

    Razer Kraken Pro v2

    $51

    Royal Kludge 87

    $55

    Asus VP249QGR

    $200

    Kingston A2000 250GB NVMe

    $39

    Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 1TB

    $39

I spent about $1100 converted. I mainly play FPS and MOBA. Only AAA title I play is Warzone. I wanted to build a system that'll run good for a couple years and something that my little sister will enjoy once I leave for overseas study and work. I am really happy about my first PC though ☺

Edit: added prices converted to USD

How do I compare 3DMark scores?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:51 AM PDT

I upgraded to a R5 3600 and a RTX 2060, and I ran the 3DMark demo test (Time Spy), but I don't know where to compare scores to see if I got similarly.

My GPU score was 7594, and my CPU was 7256

    Overall was 7541.

Upgrading to RTX 3080 or RTX 3070 from 1060

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:39 PM PDT

    Hello,

I want to upgrade my PC which is used mainly for gaming. My knowledge about computer hardware is not really good and that is why I would love to hear from you guys what should I upgrade in my PC in order to get one of those new cards running. Right now my build looks like this:

    CPU: Core i7 8700K 4.7 GHZ

    GPU: MSI GTX1060 OC 6G GAMING X

    RAM: DDR4 16GB 3000MHZ A-DATA XPG CL16 2x8 AX4U3000386G16-DRZ

    Motherboard: MSI Z370 GAMING PLUS

    PSU: Chieftec 650W

    Monitor: MSI Optix MAG27CQ 27"

    Case: Phanteks Eclipse P400S

From the quick search in Google I found out that my PSU is rather bad. That is all I got for now. At first I was thinking about 3070 but might consider getting 3080 when they become available again in my country (Poland).

    Cheers

EDIT: The parts listed above are the ones I currently have. I don't consider buying them - I have them.

Do I need a Corsair Commander Pro based on my build?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 05:40 AM PDT

    Hi y'all,

I'm not sure if I need a commander pro as I'm looking to change my RGB and my fan speeds. I have 9 QL120 RGB fans, connected directly to my Aorus Xtreme Z390 M/B. 6 of them are connected to my motherboard, the other 3 which is with the radiator is connected to a 3 to 1 node. So far I'm able to increase my fan speeds on my bios but upon startup to windows, the fans seems to reduce their speed.

I would still want to control my Corsair rgb keyboard and corsair rgb Ram, just that I want to control the fan speed without corsair taking over it and turning them to default or something.

Am I right to say that iCUE is overiding the fan speeds over my bios fan speed?
Is there a way to let my fans latch on to the bios fan speed instead of going to default upon startup?

    This is my build:

Case: Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic Razer Edition

    CPU: 9900K

    GPU: ASUS STRIX ROG 1080TI

    MOBO: Gigabyte Aorus Xtreme Z390

    COOLER: Deepcooler Castle 360EX

RAM: 4x8GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro

    PSU: Seasonic Prime 1200W

    Please send help!

Since we've been dating, my girlfriend got interested in gaming and computers. So recently she told me she wanted her own gaming pc. I helped her within her budget to pick out the parts while keeping a style she would like. We are both very happy how it turned out!

Her first game on pc she is playing? Final Fantasy 14. Bit of a curve since she is practically new to gaming but she is determined! The game is running at max settings and getting at least 130+ fps at 1080p. Other games that sparked her interest were Witcher 3 and Minecraft.

Under load, both the cpu and gpu get up to 75 degrees Celsius which I will accept as she will not be overclocking...for now.

Will 3070 really “beat 2080 Ti”?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 01:34 PM PDT

NVIDIA put on a great show with their 3000 reveal, but now the 3080 are in people's hands and I'm wondering how to interpret the numbers.

These barely used 2080 Super and 2080 Ti being sold off from $350-500 have me really curious if that's not the better deal than a new card.

Most reviews I have seen are saying the 3080 is 30% - 40% faster than a 2080 Ti in almost all situations at 4K (including RTX and DLSS). The 3080 has 2x the CUDA cores of a 2080 Ti. So double the cores for ~35% gains. The gains are even smaller at 1440p or 1080p.

I usually prefer to play at 120Hz-1440p but I have a decent 60Hz-4K panel I occasionally switch to.

The 3070 has no reviews yet. However, we can extrapolate... The 3070 has 5888 cores vs 8704 on the 3080 - 68% - and core count usually scales pretty well with performance within a generation. For instance, 2070 thru 2080 Super all perform very similar to each other against what the core count would predict - but the 2080 Ti is often slower than the cores alone would predict due mainly to low clock speeds.

Based on that, I expect the 3070 to be less than 70% as fast as 3080, and therefore slower on average than 2080 Ti - but definitely trade some blows. Maybe 3070 is around 15% faster than a 2080 Super at stock settings?

Seems like a 2080 Super or 2080 Ti is still a screaming great deal at under $400/500.

I seriously can't decide on a monitor. It's driving me crazy.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 12:19 PM PDT

I've done so much research that I think I've overthought myself into inaction.

I haven't been in the PC game for ten years but am in the process of building my ultimate game room. I'm planning on building around a 3080 if I ever win the war against the machines.

I am liking the idea of ultra wide. I really like the idea of a big ultra wide but how much am I sacrificing for that. Basically, I'd like a large ultrawide monitor that will allow the 3080 to shine. If I have to go smaller to get better overall results I will. Any suggestions?

Anyone using air cooling instead of water cooling?

    Posted: 20 Sep 2020 07:08 PM PDT

All the amazing build photos I see in the tech subs here seem to all use water cooling, but as an amateur I feel safer using air cooling. Anyone else prefer air?

Front support 420mm radiator but only 2x 140mm fans?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 10:48 AM PDT

Hello all, i was looking to change some of my stock chassis fans for some argb glory and was looking for my chassis specs to see what fits in it and how much (fans mostly).

I have CM ML360r at top in a push/pull config (well i have the stock 120mm x3 fans at push and 2x 200mm at pull) so my 3900x hardly exceeds 70 even at hour long handbrake encodes. Rear exhaust and bottom intake are CM MF140r.

My chassis is Thermaltake Urban T81 and according to specs here:

    http://nordic.thermaltake.com/Chassis/Full_Tower_/Urban/C_00002239/Urban_T81_/Specification.htm

The case supports 420mm radiator at front, that means it should be able to mount 3x 140mm fans right? But it says only 2x 140mm fans.

It already have 2x 200mm CM stock fans so i don't think its worth to exchange 2x 200mm for 2x 140mm? I was planning to get 3x 140mm CM MF140r fans. worth doing it in your opinion? Front argb isn't even visible due to dust filters so they are going strictly from performance point of view. Hard drive bays sits right behind the front intakes and i have 8x 3.5" HDD's installed so i do need a good intake possibly with high static pressure to push through the air and to the would be soon 3080.

LG 27GL850 or ASUS VG27AQ for best colors in single player games ?

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 06:04 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm searching the best single player experience monitor under 500€/$ and I think the best choice is 1440p and 144Hz. I will have a RTX 3080 so the 144fps at 1440p is possible. I found those both monitors :

    -LG 27LG850

    -ASUS VG27AQ

I think these monitors are the best choices for me but I can't decide which one (if you know an other reference at this price range your recommandations are welcomed).

I searched a lot in forums, benchmarks etc... but now I can't decide. The ASUS has a good contrast ratio for an IPS (1:1000) panel but the LG doesn't (1:800), I'm playing a lot in a dark room but I don't know if the difference is noticeable. But apparently LG got better colors with wide gamut (which is bad for some people and fixable with activation sRGB mode but disabling some settings, are these settings important ?).

I just research the best colors for games.

Thank you for your answers folks !

This seems to happen on a lot of games.

I recently bought far cry 5 for pc and I constantly get dips below 60 fps because my gpu usage is only at 60%

    Specs: Ryzen 5 3600, XFX Thicc III 5700 xt, MSI b450 tomahawk max, 32gb g.skill ripjaws 3600mhz

Update: I was playing far cry again and when I look at something really close to me my gpu usage goes up and when I look at things farther away my usage goes down

New to this. A bit overwhelmed.

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 04:24 PM PDT

I want to build my 10 year old son a gaming pc for Christmas. My goal is to hit 1080p and to play AAA games on high settings. I want to keep it under $1,000, preferably ~$800 if possible (case and components only).

I've been researching and it is a bit overwhelming. I'm nervous about running into compatibility issues and over/under buying.

This is what I have in mind so far:

    AMD Ryzen 7 3700X - $295. Corsair Vengeance 16GB RAM - $84. MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk - $180

Would I be able to meet my target with this? Is it overkill or underpowered?

    Advice on wall mounting monitors

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:56 PM PDT

Not sure if this is the right sub so sorry if it's not but i could use some advice. I'm planning on wall mounting my two monitors, an xb271hu and an lg 27gn950. They are both vesa 100x100, but im not sure what kind of wall mount i should buy. At first i was thinking of one mount that could hold two monitors but though how it would be more restrictive in terms of moving both monitors in different ordinations and angels. Is there some sort of a problem im not seeing with buying two single mounts? And if not is there any specific one or brand i should buy or just any generic one around 50ish dollars

First PC Build, looking for input before pulling the trigger

    Posted: 21 Sep 2020 03:56 PM PDT

A friend of mine is wanting to build his first PC and asked for help since I know a little bit more than he does about computers, this is still my first time ever picking out components for a PC, in the past I've just hacked some random ancient stuff together for fun not for any actual performance..

Based this off of the PCMR 60fps ultra build here.

Chose to switch to the R3 3100 to the R5 2600 because he'd like to get into streaming and from what I researched 6 cores would be beneficial for that even when sacrificing a little bit of single core performance. Also upgraded from 500gb to 1tb SSD and chose a semi-modular power supply to hopefully make assembly a bit easier. Also added a wifi/bluetooth card so he can connect his wireless Xbox controller.

Games played most of the time: Rocket League, Warzone, Fortnite, FS2020 along with others stuff here and there and streaming whatever he is playing.

Not seeing any compatibility issues on PCPartsPicker but figured I would try to check with some more experienced people before telling him what to buy. Thanks for any help!
