    Simple Questions - September 14, 2020

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Take care of your PCs guys. Both the software and hardware.

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:01 AM PDT

So I helped a friend with his PC that he's had for a little less than a year the other day because it would crash every time he right clicked in explorer or the desktop. I've never seen a PCs software be so fucked up in such little time. After uninstalling a bunch of stuff and going through files deleting anything suspicious or unnecessary I first ran a third party virus scan and both a full search and offline search in windows defender, there were a total of 50 detections(I don't even know how he could possibly have that many viruses). I then ran sfc scan multiple times until it no longer found stuff to repair and now he can at least right click without crashing.

Is it normal to be scared and wan't to get a prebuilt instead?

    Posted: 13 Sep 2020 06:07 PM PDT

    *Want. Ignore typo.

I plan to build myself a PC with a 3080 and a Zen 3 CPU. I can start getting some parts in now, but I'm quite scared as i dont want to fuck up 2000 quids worth of parts. It's not so much building the PC itself, but as stupid as it sounds, im scared of plugging in the PSU cables, front panel cables etc in the wrong places, or just fucking up and putting cables in the wrong places. I've watched build guides, but it's still not exactly clear where everything goes. I've owned 2 PCs before, both prebuilts, but now I kinda want to built one myself, but i'm scared to do so.

EDIT: Thanks to everyone for all the advice and reassuring me it's not all so hard. I'm going to "study" some more and wait for Zen 3 and see what Radeon 6000 has to offer before deciding 3080 or a 6700XT.

    EDIT 2:

I plan on getting something along the lines of

    CPU: Zen 3 Equivalent to a 3800X

    Cooler: Corsair H150I PRO XT

Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite ATX

    Memory: GSKILL Trident 32GB @ 3600MHZ CL16

    Storage: 1TB Firecuda 520 NVME

GPU: EVGA FTW3 3080 (Unless AMD offer something better with Radeon 6000)

    Case: Coolermaster Masterbox TD500 Mesh

PSU: Corsair RM 850W Fully Modular

Case Fan Extra: 1x Corsair LL120 for the back of the case Cooler Master MasterFan MF120 ( Case comes with 3 ARGB fans at front but none at the rear)

Hopefully this build isn't going to be too hard.

I put the parts list so maybe I'll be able to find out weather it will be a challenging build and weather its a good parts list etc. Thanks guys

Thanks guys, appreciate all the input so far and it's giving me more confidence for doing the build myself

    Portal 2 style build

Getting ready for the 3080 to drop so thought I would rebuild ahead of this as I needed a new power supply anyway.

Just need to add the NZXT Kraken for better cooling (also hoping it can display a gif of Wheatley), upgrade RAM to 4x8GB 3600mhz with RGB to add some extra white light. Debated putting the RGB NZXT AER fans in for the exhausts but will leave it for now in case it's overkill.

I know I could have gone with the white version of the NZXT H510 Elite but I prefer the blacked out look and would be easier if I want to change the theme from Portal to another Funko Pop figure I've got lying around lol.

    Ryzen 7 2700x on B550.

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 10:18 AM PDT

    Hi there!
After a lot of research I wanted to upgrade my mobo to be prepared for the upcoming Ryzen 4000 series and possible upgrade to RTX 3000 series.

I didn't want to upgrade my CPU yet, so i decided to get a B550 board first, without knowing that B550 is not supposed to be compatible with Ryzen 2000.
Initally I got the MSI B550M Mortar, but it came with a faulty ethernet port.
Then I got the Asus TUF B550M Plus.

Both of them worked perfectly fine, with 2x16gb 3600mhz Crucial Ballistix.
Just letting you guys know, in case someone needs the info :D

Your idle temps depend more on your fan settings than your cooler (Re: this week's frequent "are my temps normal?" posts).

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 01:02 PM PDT

Recently we've had a lot of "are my idle temperatures normal?" posts (such as this, this, this, this, this this all from the past week). Those posts tend to mention the cooler they bought, but don't mention anything about the fan settings.

For many coolers (both CPU and case):

    • If you set your fans to be stopped or extremely slow until the temps are 50+C, your idle temps will be probably be 50+C.
    • If you set your fans to be faster at lower temperatures, your idle temps will be lower.

Here's an example graph of temps with a 3700X with the stock cooler in a case with horrible airflow showing both settings.

    https://imgur.com/a/YAMZtT9

    • For the first half of the graph, the fan settings (both case and CPU) were set to very quiet (stopped below 40C, very low speed until ~55C, still quite low at 60C, max at 70C). Unsurprisingly, temps rose to those levels, and even though it was usually quiet, you could hear the fan changing speed often.
    • For the last part of the graph, the fans were set to a more gradual curve that was higher everywhere (never off, ramping up to a pretty high speed at 50C). Unsurprisingly, temps were lower. It was less quiet but the fans didn't change speed much.

The best setting for this case is somewhere between those two.

    Thoughts:

    • Posting idle temps without posting fan settings is pretty meaningless.
    • Most of those people responding "re-apply thermal paste" or "buy a new cooler" are prematurely jumping to a conclusion.

I have a Corsair RM650w gold modular PSU with an R5 3600 in a well ventilated case. Nvidia recommends min. 750w PSU for a 3080, is it still reasonable to get a 3080 FE for 1440p 144hz gaming with my current components?

    Case Fans

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 06:52 AM PDT

    Good Morning,

I bought a prebuilt computer several months ago.(See specs below) The only thing I do not like about it are the fans only glow Red. I wanted to add a small touch of RGB to this. I was eyeing the inwing sirius loops fans because they have a ring of RGB which is more subtle than the whole fan.

    I7-9700K

    RTX 2060

    asrock z390 phantom gaming 4s/ac

    16gb DDR4 Ram 3200 mhz

    512gb SSD

    Gigabyte B700H 80+ bronze PSU

    Inwin 303 white case

I am needing mostly worried about connecting it to my motherboard. I am not sure how that works, and I am not sure how to tell what connectors I need to look for that my motherboard would be compatible with... Any info is appreciated!

Is the MSI B550 Tomahwak or Asus ROG STRIX B550-F better?

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:23 PM PDT

Hello, I've got a follow-up question. Asus has a promotion with a major retailer in my country, where they sell their products with pretty hefty discounts after you "register" them. This puts it at the price of the B550 Tomahawk, or about 178 USD (Not American, BTW). Which one of these would you say is better for this price?

    The Case Fan Conundrum

    Posted: 14 Sep 2020 12:21 PM PDT

    Dear fellow builders,

Once again I call upon those among you, so generous with advice! I am about to change my CPU stock cooler by an aio water cooler. But I'm a bit riddled with how they might upset my fan balance.

My current fan setup has 2x 140mm intake in the front, and 1x 140mm exhaust in the upper back. Both capable of the same RPM.

On one side, I heard that "you should go for the biggest radiator your case can fit" (© JayzTwoCents). In my case, that would mean a 360mm, 3x 120mm fans in top mounted exhaust. Aesthetically, it would also be the nicest as I have a fairly large case, plenty of room left.

On the other hand, "you should balance the air flow".

Now here are my options, as I see them: Option A: move the 140mm exhaust to intake position, so I got 3x140 intake and 3x120 exhaust but no fan in the back.

Option B: buy an additional 140mm and put it in intake position. That would result in 3x 140mm intake, 3x 120mm exhaust in top (aio) and 1x 140mm exhaust in the back. That way I keep the back fan but I might be overdoing it in the exhaust section?

Option C: go for a 280mm aio cooler and buy 1 extra 140mm for intake. Results in 3x140mm intake in front, 2x140 exhaust in top (aio) and 1x140 in back.

Do you see any clear reasons on why to go for one option or the other? Or have some general advice to give on the subject?

    Thank you all in advance,

Just looking for some opinions on it before I buy it once the 3080 releases. My current budget is around $2300-$2400 but I could wait another week for payday and put a couple more hundred towards it if you guys think i should make any changes/upgrades. My first PC build

Hey guys and gals. I've been doing some research and have picked a few of these parts out. I'm going for light gaming and a lot of school work. I know the build is a little overkill to a degree but I want it to be like that. I'm going for a white and black build. If you have any recommendations for parts to upgrade or any parts that come in white please let me know.

    Please and thank you.

Can I cool down my PSU with a desk fan?
