Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Warning to anyone upgrading PSU for RTX 3000 series

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:32 AM PDT

DO NOT MIX MODULAR PSU CABLES, THEY ARE NOT STANDARDIZED BETWEEN MANUFACTURERS

I know a lot of people will be swapping their PSUs and taking the shortcut of disconnecting old PSU and plugging in their new one. Please do not do this!

Unless you have standard replacement cables from CableMod or Corsair you're risking losing your components or worse.

    Testimonies:

I nuked two SSDs by using cables from a different PSU in my new PSU.

Guys please learn from my mistake

PSA: Stop Mixing Modular PSU Cables - Gamers Nexus

    https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/2702-psa-on-mixing-modular-psu-cables-dont-do-it

    EDIT:

    FAQ

    - What about Cable Extensions?

Cable extensions use the "device side" of the connector, which is always the same. When in doubt check the manual of the RGB cable for compatibility.

    - What about the same PSU manufacturer?

Check their website, for example Corsair PSU cable compatibility chart

    - What about SATA/Molex/USB coffee heater?

This pertains only the cables that plug directly into the metal PSU box.

    Do 1440p 144hz 1ms monitors exist?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 06:30 PM PDT

I am looking to upgrade BenQ XL2411Z 24" monitor (1080p, 144hz, 1ms). I have enjoyed using this monitor for gaming and had no problems, but I want to upgrade to 1440p now with the 3000 cards on the horizon.

I was watching this video with the best 1440p gaming monitors but none of them are 1ms. (Even though they say 1ms when I look at the store pages).

Can someone explain? I just want a 1440p monitor with at least 144hz and 1ms.

Also does this mean that my current monitor is not true 1ms? If it isn't that's fine, I have been happy with it.

EDIT: My main reason for looking at 1ms is because of my current BenQ monitor and my most played games are CSGO / comp shooters. I just use my PC for gaming, no films etc.

Help Dad build Gaming PC for his Son

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:54 AM PDT

Want to build a Gaming PC for my son's 13th birthday. My wife want's me to buy something pre-built for "cheap" but I'm convinced I can piece together something better for far less. Am I out of my gourd to think so? It will also double as his schooling/distance learning computer. Trying to stay under $750 but I think that might be tough. (Have 1080p Monitor, Keyboard, headset and Gaming Mouse already). Suggestions for the following?

    • Go with Core i5 or Ryzen 5 - does either come with a cooler?
    • GTX 1660 SUPER or RTX 2060/2070??
    • Power supply??
    • Motherboard...the choices make my head spin??
    • Memory - thinking 16GB...
    • Case?
    • What's the cheapest way to get Windows 10 - is OEM versions still a thing???
    • Plays a lot of STEAM games and MineCraft but probably break out into something more hardware demanding in short time.

Looking for value here to make that $750 budget...located in the USA.

    Cpu upgrade

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:40 AM PDT

Hi tomorrow, I will receive my new cpu and go from an i7- 8700k to a i9-9900k. My motherboard is a LGA 1151 (serie 300). I was wondering if there are things I need to do or check when the new cpu will be in place? It is the first time that I upgrade a cpu.

My Personal Review of the 5700XT (And where Radeon graphics are headed)

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 12:19 PM PDT

I finished my first ever PC build two months ago now, and the GPU was something I weighted heavily on because of my limited budget but the need to get the most gaming performance as possible. I knew essentially my choice was between either the 2060 Super or the 5700XT, or waiting and saving more to get a 2070 Super. Like a lot of PC builders I am impatient so I ended up choosing the 5700XT, and I'm very glad I did.

I knew going in that my main concern would be AMD's drivers and if their recent update would fix all of the issues I had heard about, i.e. the black screens and other random occurrences; as well as the 5700XT's reputation of running pretty toasty. After two months of gaming on the system I can safely say neither of those have been a problem for me. I've had literally no driver or graphical issues during the whole time, and even at first when my emergency case (the one I chose because the one I wanted was out of stock) the NZXT H510 was constricting virtually all airflow, the temps never really got to a concerning level (usually at 80-85C at full load). I think a big portion of this can be attributed to picking the triple fan Gigabyte Gaming OC version of the 5700XT. The card runs very quiet and now that I have the case I wanted at first (the Corsair 275R Airflow), the temps have stuck more to 80C and sometimes dip to 75C.

For the price I got it for of about $410 after tax I cannot be more pleased with my first ever graphics card's performance. It's more on par with performance of the 2070 and 2070 Super than it's direct price competitor in the 2060 Super. My main focus is on 1080p high refresh rate gaming, and I don't doubt that if I was more interested in 1440p 80-100fps, that this card would get it done.

But now with the upcoming Ampere release, I'm definitely tempted to ditch my card for the 3070 or 3080 because of the advertised performance gains for the price. I'm going to stay strong until Hardware Unboxed benchmarks every card and their mother to measure the performance extensively so that I don't waste money on hype. But because of how much I love the 5700XT's price to performance, I also want to wait for Big Navi and see their offerings compared to Nvidia. The drivers again are obviously the main concern, and AMD's past failings with the Radeon 7 and their lack of high end competition with Nvidia don't give the average enthusiast a lot of hope for a big jump. But I would be remiss if I didn't give them a chance and wait for the reviews to come out before I jump ship to team green. I really hope Big Navi lives up to expectation, because it'll give us all more options and push Nvidia to continue their big price to performance binge that's going to start with the 30 Series.

Is the rtx 3070 going to be wasted for my requirements?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 12:12 PM PDT

Simple question: 1080p 144Hz Ultra settings, is the RTX 3070 going to be wasted for this setup? Would a 2060 suffice or should I wait for the 3060 (if it comes), any recommendations of GPUs?

Should I get the RTX 3080 or RTX 3070?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 01:11 PM PDT

I've decided that I'm going to sell my current RTX 2070 Super and buy one of the new 30 series cards. I was thinking of upgrading to the RTX 3070 but I was wondering if it would be better to get the RTX 3080 as it would be a much bigger leap in performance. Is it worth £180 more to get the 3080 rather than the 3070? In my PC I have an i7 9700k, 16GB 3000MHz and a 650W PSU (it's gold rated and from Corsair so I'm sure it could handle either card) if this information is useful.

Solved! How to fix bricked motherboard.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:14 PM PDT

So you update your bios incorrectly, and you have a bricked motherboard. Here is a cheap fix, that works on any case of a bricked motherboard. You need to buy a bios chip like this. Find the right one for your motherboard. Take out the cmos battery and un-solder this. To un-solder this you will need to look at the back of your motherboard and find the corresponding pins for the chip. Re-solder the new chip in the same way as the old chip. WARNING. The cmos battery must be taken out before this.

Best Ryzen CPU around the $250 mark?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 12:28 PM PDT

I'm putting a rig together and I've been getting a lot of suggestions for getting a Ryzen 5 3600 (not the X or the XT) for what I need the computer for. (light gaming).

But as they're $200, I am willing to spend $50 more to get something even better. I figured the X or the XT would be the obvious choice, but upon research, I've found that these are "pointless".

So, then, what IS a $50 improvement over the 5 3600??

Looking for a build comparable to Alienware Aurora R11

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:05 PM PDT

My son wants a PC for his birthday on October 1st - but it is a very bad timing, I am not paying full price for 2080.

I am currently considering getting Aurora R11 with liquid cooling and 10700KF but minimal RAM, HDD and GPU - to upgrade them afterwards by myself (I'm software engineer with experience of swapping parts inside computer case).

Does anybody have a decent build on pcpartspicker?

I was trying to do builds on pcpartpicker - but I am not sure if I know all the components needed (I have not built a PC from scratch for 20 years). Also, I probably picked up too expensive PSUs and motherboards. My son is 8 years old so I don't think he'll be over clocking.

I am fine paying couple hundred $ for prebuilt system and I am comfortable with Alienware quality.

I've made a couple posts about this, so I'm sorry if this is considered spam or against the rules. I assembled my PC and it would not boot. My motherboard indicates a CPU error. So, I returned the CPU, assuming it was defective. I still got the same error. So, I returned the motherboard, assuming it was defective. Unfortunately, when I rebuilt everything, I received the same error. edit: To clarify, there is a row of troubleshooting lights built into the motherboard. The one labeled "CPU" lights up red when I turn the computer on. Here are pictures when the computer is off

edit: I fixed the error light for the CPU and attempted to flash the new BIOS using the "flash BIOS" button. However, now the CPU light is back on. Whenever the light is on, I notice the fan is going at max speed. Where should I go from here? It seems weird that a CPU error would be triggered by me hitting attempting to flash the BIOS

    Confused with argb fans

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 01:08 PM PDT

So in total there will be 6 fans. I want to buy the corsair commander pro too control everything but I dont understand if I also need the corsair rgb hub or not ? Apparently I can use the commander pro with cooler Master fans. I haven't bought a motherboard yet but im scared to buy a motherboard (for the 3080) and theres not enough argb headers or things like that.

Monitors: I have 2 and see absolutely no reason to get any others. I could fit in an extra monitor on my desk.... As of right now I don't need or see a use for an 3rd monitor or change monitors. They are: 27", 1440p, and 144Hz. I forgot to include this in the PCPP list but since it's not changing and doesn't affect an internals I will leave it out.

Case: This is the case I had for my last build and I have no complaints with it at all. I was briefly looking to replace it then realized it was more modifiable than I originally knew.

Fans: I am planning to remove the stock fans and put in a lot of be quiet! fans. The replacing is mostly due to noise but this will slightly increase the airflow (from ~110CFM to ~120CFM for the intake). My theory is: 1x140mm on the top rear and 1x140mm on the rear for Outflow, 2x140 on the front for Intake, and 1x120mm on the HDD cage for good measure.

RAM: My current motherboard can't actually use the full 3200 mHz of my RAM at the moment so basically any newer motherboard should be an upgrade for that. Also with 32 gb I have never had it at 100% usage.

Storage: So there are a lot of items there. I currently have an SSD for the OS and two hard drives, one (2tb) from my first build in 2015 and one (5tb) from my current build. I'd like to keep them working until the size is useless for what I am doing. For the new build I'd like to get more storage, game file sizes are increasing and I like to have a variety of games downloaded. A 14 TB mass storage drive will be for majority of what I will use. The more I see the NVMe the more I'd like to try it, 1 TB for OS and some games. I will need to also move the OS to the NVMe drive but that seems easily doable with a few programs.

Motherboard: I need a different socket for the selected CPU and my current one limits the RAM to 2400mhz. I have absolutely no loyalty or preference for this. Based on what I've seen the prices for a LGA1200 socket will be over $150 for anything good. The one I selected had good reviews. I would like to keep with an ATX.

PSU: My selection seems nice at 850W I am sure this will be more than I need and might last me into the next build.

    For the more debatable items:

CPU: I wanted to go with the i9-10900k but the price is completely unreasonable; ~$800 for an item that has an MSRP of $500, nope. So I'm favoring the i7-10700k. I don't do any overclocking but I am vaguely interested and may consider it. I have also seen the i5-10600K is comparable in performance for about $200 less the cost.

GPU: I REALLY wanted the RTX 3090 with far more power than I'll need but I really don't see a lot of CPUs that will match it. I'd hate to create that large of a bottleneck. At the moment I have decided on an RTX 3080.

5.25" Slots: Yes there's a dvd drive. I have gotten a lot of shit for that from a few friends. It's a "just in case" type of add on.

Budget: Debatable, preferably under $3,000 total cost. Everything I am planning to reuse is included in the table, ~$550 of components including the OS.

So for the points I'd really like some help with:

    1. How good of a CPU/GPU combination is this? Considering they are top of the line parts I can assume it is good but is there anything else that may be better. I like Intel for RAW POWER but I am open to AMD.
    2. Does anyone have a good CPU cooler they'd recommend for this? I have no real preference but the one I found seemed like a good value with low noise output.
    3. Are there any recommendations for Thermal Paste? I have never looked into it deeply but this one seems widely used and well recommended.
    4. If anyone has this particular motherboard, is the motherboard I found good? I really dislike my current one based on the RAM limitations. There are aspects I will 100% overlook when looking through motherboards.
    5. Should I just get a 1000W PSU for Future ProofingTM?

    Water cooled EVEGA 2080ti

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:17 PM PDT

Hi guys- I know the Nvidia new series of graphics card is just around the corner, I've been wanting to build a PC, but trying to keep costs now and while simultaneously get good value.

Is it because I'm on the other hand is on the bleeding edge, and offered to sell me his EVEGA 2080ti with built in water cooling for $450

Do u think I should hold out for a few months (I'm sure the newest series of GPUs right around the corner will be sold out for a few months) but Im not sure if it makes sense to cop or not

I'll be building my rig from the ground up, and currently have a 1080p 165 hz monitor but thats about it

So the question is- cop or wait? (I'm in no rush)

Building a New PC for Heavy Chrome Usage - I may have gone overboard a bit

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:13 PM PDT

    Proposed Build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/pDT9sk

I'm not a gamer except for a future purchase of Microsoft Flight Simulator, and a future Oculus Rift (Google Earth VR!). But I regularly have 50-100 Chrome Tabs open. I use my PC a lot within the Google Sheets realm - a couple of tabs that are always left open significantly lag my PC. Making one change in one Google Sheets cell results in 100% CPU usage for about 10-15 seconds (here's my current build now 5 years old https://pcpartpicker.com/list/H7WZD3).

So, I wanted to upgrade my CPU and not mess around with it. 16-core ought to do it? :) One thing led to another, and now I have the new proposed build. Yes, a bit overkill, and I'm fine with the price, but any issues with it or recommended changes?

Thoughts? Can Chrome utilize all 16-cores and this would help my Chrome CPU lag?

Upgraded RAM, now I'm in a bind.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:55 PM PDT

Had 16 GB. Upgraded to 32 GB. Same type of RAM, same everything. I try and run games and they run for awhile, then crash. Then later I got the notorious BSOD. It said the reason for shutdown was "memory".

PC booted back up no problems. Tried running more PC games. Still encountered crashes. What gives ?

My pc has detected 32 gb of ram. I tried the RAM diagnostic tool on windows. It restarted my pc and never showed anything on boot up.

So it's either I need to try and reseat the ram? Maybe I didn't get them in there good? Or maybe I have faulty ram? What do you guys think?

    More Computer problems

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:40 PM PDT

I tried turning on my computer today, and it suddenly doesn't work. I was using it earlier, and shut it off. I try turning it on again, and it doesn't show anything in the display. I tried reseating the ram, but it doesn't work. All the fans seem to be working, but there is no display, and no leds on, except the cpu light for a little bit when I first turn it on. Is it my gpu?

Specs: Ryzen 5 3600 MSI b450-m pro vdh max G.skill aegis 3200 MHz EVGA Gtx 1660ti

Edit: Bad news: I was looking under my gpu to see if it was getting any power (if the fan was spinning) and I see a red led light that is on. What now?

I used rubbing alcohol to clean thermal paste off my CPU and left it to dry, now there is a strange gray line around the bottom on the silver part

I was cleaning my CPU to prepare it for a new motherboard, and left it to dry after. Then, where the silver part of the CPU met the green part (I don't know how else to explain it) a small dark gray line appeared and I don't have my new motherboard yet so I can't tell if my CPU is bricked, is this common and should I be worried? I can only assume the gray line is dry rubbing alcohol
