It's been said before, but re-thermal pasting is a game changer Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:14 PM PDT I know I've seen this post before, but if you are considering re-building because of performance and the build is old, take it apart, clean it, and re-thermal paste the CPU and GPU. I have a nearly 5 yo build that has been giving me trouble. Today I took it apart, cleaned out a metric ton of dust, put new thermal paste on the CPU and GPU, now it's running great. The old paste on both was crusty and dry. I also have new/faster/larger memory coming this weekend which I expect will help. Considering money is tight, this is a much better alternative to re-building. [link] [comments]
Added 25% performance increase to my friends computer without changing a single part Posted: 04 Aug 2020 07:23 AM PDT So last week my buddy who knows I am into PCs texted me saying that after he upgraded his PSU his computer will no longer post. I tried to fix it for him over text but we couldn't figure it out that way and he brought his computer over. Long story short his new PSU had a 10pin offshoot from the 24pin motherboard cable that needed to be plugged back into the PSU, I don't think I've ever seen this before but his PSU was a decent brand so I guess it's w/e. While looking at his PC I said "you know you have the RAM in the wrong slots right?". He told me he did and I figured he knew what I was talking about and said he'd fix it when he got home. For reference he had both sticks in the rightmost 2 slots. The next day after seeing my rig and talking to me about overclocking and stuff he wants to know more. I have him DL CineBench R20 and run a test. He scored pretty low, about 2300 which is way below what an 8700k should score. I asked him if his RAM sticks were in the right slots and he admitted he didn't know what those were. I explained and he put the RAM in the correct DIMMS. Then because he has the same Mobo and CPU as me I sent him a bunch of pictures of my BIOS settings (mostly power settings, but also how to enable XMP). He did all that and ran CB20 again. Scored 3425 which is a 25% increase by simply putting his RAM in the correct slots and tweaking some power delivery settings in BIOS. He was shocked at the performance uptick in Tarkov when he went to play it. Our other friend who had a 2060S and 8700k was beating him by 20-30fps on average. Now my buddies 8700k and 2070s system is up 20-30fps average over the other guy. I sent him this gif and said my work here is done. Waiting to hear from friend 2 now about tuning..... Edit: Tldr put your ram in the right slots and turn on xmp [link] [comments]
By the time games *need* 8 cores for gaming, your CPU will be due for an upgrade anyway. Posted: 04 Aug 2020 01:31 AM PDT Everything I am about to say applies to gaming only. A lot has been said about the new consoles having 8 cores and what that will mean for PC requirements. I've been hearing that for ages and, much like the Starks saying "winter is coming", eventually that will be true. Nowadays the price difference between a 3600 and a 3700x is very substantial, while the performance delta is almost non-existent. But now and again I still see people here and on youtube recommending or insisting on the 3700x for gaming with the "future proof" argument in mind. And don't get me started on people who got a 1700/1800x instead of a 1600 strictly for gaming - that money was wasted, pure and simple. However, ask yourself: how soon will it be that games are literally unplayable with less than 8 cores? How will a 8 core CPU perform when that day comes? Will DDR5 be out? Will having PCIe 3.0 be a bottleneck for new GPUs? How relevant will an older 8 core CPU be? TL;DR - If you are strictly gaming, get a 6 core, 12 thread CPU. 2 yrs planning, 6 months saving/buying and 5hrs building I now have my dream PC! Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:52 AM PDT Haven't had a desktop in 5yrs since my last one died, rip, and couldn't be happier that the beast booted and after tweaking everything is working as intended :D ryzen 3900x, rtx 2070 super, 16gb 3200 ram, 970 pro nvme drive for os, CoolerMaster black something or other cooler, extra SSD and ide drives and case fans salvaged and saved from last PC, x570 taichi mobo and a meshify case, also an AOC 2k 144hz gsync monitor.. will be used for music production and gaming.. cost about the same as what I spent on a 2nd hand car.. (about 4kish) so hoping to get at least 10 happy productive yrs out of it.. thanks for reading and sharing in my excitement.. if I had one hot tip to share, don't forget to reattach the anti static band to the case before you start working on the build again! Had a mini heartattack when I saw a spark connecting the pwrled+ to the mobo and realised what I'd done, spent the next two hrs of the build sweating bullets! Posted: 04 Aug 2020 06:08 AM PDT Hope everyone is well. I just wanted ask whether GPU 'middlemen' such as Gigabyte, MSI, ASUS or Galax actually do anything to improve the performance/ utility of GPUs? It seems weird to me that Nvidia and AMD do not only sell their own brand of GPUs (apart from special editions) similar to how Intel and AMD sell CPUs. Branding of GPU seems to add false competition when its AMD or Nvidia that make the chips. [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:31 PM PDT I built a new PC in February that I wanted to be able to use for Sketchup and Home Designer Pro and I also wanted to be able to use it for some gaming. Here is what I built. Ryzen 5 3600 CPU Asus Tuf gaming x-570 PLUS (WiFi) mobo G,Skill Trident Z Neo DDR4 32GB (2x16) Sapphire Nitro+ RX580 GPU Corsair RM750 80+ Gold PS Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVME 500GB SSD Seagate 1TB HDD Corsair Carbide 175R Mid-Tower Case (5) Deep Cool 120mm RGB case fans (2 intake, 3 exhaust) I have been happy with my build. I'm not worried about ultra graphics settings in games. However, during the shutdown I discovered iRacing and I am hooked. I really want to go to a triple screen setup and I know the RX580 will not be sufficient. As I said I am not worried about the highest graphics settings and I don't want to spend tons of money. I want to run 3 27" monitors at 1080p. I think a 2070 super will do what I want (looking at an Asus GeForce RTX2070 super OC 8GB GPU, has 3 DP outputs and it will fit in my case) BTW- I just added a Corsair H100i Pro XT AIO , front mounted, because I was finding my CPU temps were as high as 92C during long iRacing sessions. Now it peaks at 69C. Anyway, my question is with Nvidia and AMD reportedly releasing next gen GPUs in the near future, should I buy the 2070 super now? The $500-550 price point is really all I want to spend and I don't know if any of the newer cards will fall into that range (at least not right away). Also, does anyone see any glaring issues with my build? The only real problem I have been having is with compatibility of the RGB components, especially since adding the cooler and installing iCue. [STARTING BUILD RESEARCH] - Photo Editing + Gaming Posted: 04 Aug 2020 11:20 AM PDT I'm starting to look into a custom PC, since my 8-year-old iMac is starting to run hot and slow, and Apple has priced itself into oblivion. I would love some feedback, recommendations, or "WTF ARE YOU DOING" (if appropriate). Primary Use (addition to general internet use and MS Office productivity):

Bluetooth 5.0 Dongle Issues - 4.0 Dongle works fine Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:43 PM PDT I built a PC without Bluetooth included so I originally used a Bluetooth 4.0 dongle and it works perfectly fine on my Windows 10 OS. I want to upgrade to 5.0 (Discord hogs all the bandwith on 4.0, disallowing me from hearing ingame audio and Discord at the same time - read that switching to 5.0 would fix this) so I got a 5.0 dongle and plugged it in after removing the 4.0 one, and it's immediately recognized by my computer. It shows up on my Bluetooth & other devices "other devices" section as "Bluetooth Radio" and the USB lights up. However, it doesn't seem to detect any of the audio devices I had previously connected with Bluetooth 4.0 when I click "add Bluetooth or other devices," even after erasing all of the saved paired devices on both my PC and the audio devices. When I switch back to my 4.0 dongle, again everything works as expected. What's going on? Anyone know how to get my PC to detect my devices with 5.0? I'm having trouble understanding how to choose RAM based on it's speed vs. latency. Can you help? Posted: 04 Aug 2020 10:24 AM PDT Hi there! I am building a video editing/animation rig at the moment and am kind of stuck on RAM. The system is built around the 16-core Ryzen 9 3950X. From what I have read, 3rd gen ryzen chips have a sweet spot with ram between 3200-3600. But my question comes when deciding between the two. Most 3600 cards are rated at CL18, while most 3200 cards are at CL16....what performance trade-offs can I expect from faster cards with lower latencies? To push the decision question even further, once I've settled on a card speed/latency how would one go about choosing between cards sharing the same specs? I'm looking at the Corsair Vengeance LPX and the G.Skill Ripjaws V. This is my first build and I still have a lot to learn. Additionally, I'd like to mention that I don't think I have the chops to mess with tuning ram timings in the BIOS. THANK YOU! [link] [comments]

Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:55 PM PDT So this is my first build that been up for about 2 weeks now, I've fixed all BSODs that I was getting but since it's been built I've been getting random crashes, it just turns the screen black usually while getting stuck on some audio that was playing and then restarts. My specs are the r5 3600, rx 5700xt, asrock b550 phantom gaming, 16gb 3200mhz ram. Any help would be appreciated, thank you! [link] [comments]
(MSi) MORTAR MAX or TOMOHAWK MAX Posted: 04 Aug 2020 12:21 PM PDT Hi guys, I'm getting around to ordering my parts but I'm stuck on which motherboard I should get. MSI B450 Gaming Carbon Pro + Corsair Vengeance LPX 4x8GB @ 3600mhz Posted: 04 Aug 2020 02:06 PM PDT This is my first build and I just swapped 2x8GB @ 3200mhz for 4x8GB @ 3600mhz. Went into the bios with XMP enabled and changed the RAM frequency to 3466mhz (the up to frequency for my motherboard) but my PC keeps crashing with this config. I was able it to get to work at 3333mhz. Is there something inherently wrong with what I'm trying to do? Should I just settled for 3333mhz or is there something else I can try? Thanks [link] [comments]

If you want to make a post about what parts to buy, please mention what country you're from! Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:29 PM PDT People on this subreddit come from all over the world and therefore have access from different retailers and therefore have different pricing/availability when it comes to parts. That's why it can get difficult to help people when a part you recommend could be unavailable or overpriced in their area. Not to mention when people just type a number without a currency. The only way helpers can really tell what country you're in (other than directly saying it or your post history) is your PC Part Picker link. (i.e. "ca.pcpartpicker.com" probably means you're from Canada, uk.pcpartpicker.com from the UK, au.pcpartpicker.com from Australia, etc.) If you're not posting a PC Part Picker link, or there's no dedicated for your country, please mention where you live. If you post a link from just "pcpartpicker.com", it can only be assumed that you live in the US. Anyways, just a friendly recommendation for any future posters. It's easy to forget that we all don't share the same retailers. It's not a rule, so it's not mandatory of course, but it does help in searching for the right parts. (Speaking of rules, remember to read Rule 2. That one tends to go under people's radars.) [link] [comments]
