    Simple Questions - August 03, 2020

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 05:16 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Don't cheap out on your motherboard

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 10:59 PM PDT

I've built probably a dozen computers by now and out of all the parts I've had go bad on me (and believe me it happens more than you think), motherboards tend to be the top contender (with ram sticks being a close second).

It's easy to go on a site like PCPartPicker, filter by compatibility, sort by the lowest price first and then pick whatever motherboard is cheapest but you have to realize what you're paying for. Cheaper quality motherboards means less stable power delivery and lesser QC'ed parts. It means you'll be using your computer for X amount of months and then all of the sudden one day it just won't turn on, then you have to RMA it and wait 2-5 weeks for a new one. Either that or it can cause you endless blue screens of death due to unstable power delivery.

Just, for the love of PCMR, do not cheap out too much on your motherboard. That's all I ask!

Edit: for those of you who are saying we should post an example of good motherboards, I have decided I'll take it a step further and link Gamer's Nexus's (technically Buildzoid's) guide on the top 18 motherboards for AMD Ryzen B450, X470, and X570 chipsets. This video deeply analyzes each motherboard and explains what makes each one good or bad. So I'll link it ---> here

Edit 2: I acknowledge that the post is largely anecdotal when it comes to actual failure rates, so take all information given here with a grain of salt. The consensus seems to be for most users as long as you don't pick the absolute cheapest boards then you should be fine, which I mostly largely agree with. Also you guys in the comments have been very helpful and nice about educating each other on things so I greatly appreciate it. Thanks for not being toxic!

I rely on wifi for my internet. Ethernet is not possible for me at all . And my wifi adapter card is causing me audio stuttering. What should i do? Risking buying a new Wifi adapter for 60 bucks in hope the same prroblem doesn't happen again? Or is there an alternative solution?

The stock cooler for the 3700x doesn't look well with the other color options but whatever. Also my android is really bad at taking pictures sorry lmao.

why does LG's $1500 TV offer so much more than even $2k monitors?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 02:25 AM PDT

LG CX 48inch OLED 120hz 4k comes with both G-synch certification + freesync premium pro certificiation, 1000nits HDR10+, dolby vision, dolby atmos, HDMI 2.1 for $1500

Meanwhile no monitor on the market has even half the specs for $2000, what am I missing?

I know latency won't be that low compared to gaming monitors but this TV has almost 10ms at 60fps.

So you’ve built your first PC... now what?

    Posted: 02 Aug 2020 06:29 PM PDT

I'm surprised there isn't a sticky/comprehensive post - that I've found (if there is, forgive me) - as to what comes following the build.

All the monitoring and software devices and bios/xmp tips... can we please share them?

I'd like to establish a thread of what to do and where to download all the good stuff that 1) helps you make sure you're getting the performance you should and 2) monitoring the elements of your shiny new machine to ensure it's working (temps, etc.).

So what's the best and where do we get it to monitor and ensure we're getting the most of our ram, our monitor is actually running at the right hz and our temps are good and what our FPS is (and should be)?

    Thanks!

GTX Titan no display with Ryzen 5 CPU

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:25 PM PDT

    Hi all,

As title says above I'm having issues with my GPU. I have tested on another system on Intel and card works fine.

When I put it in the system with Ryzen 5 CPU I have the issues.

System works fine with different GPU and GPU works fine in different system.

Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks in advanced

Looking to upgrade my GPU, is my motherboard compatible?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 12:24 PM PDT

    Hello all,

My current motherboard is: MSI Z97 PC MATE ATX LGA1150.

I am looking to upgrade to: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 super.

I put them into PCPartpicker and it said there was no compatibility issues.

I saw that the GPU requires a PCI 3.0 and the motherboard only has PCI 2.0 slots.

Am I missing something or are they compatible?

    Build ready: R7 3700X RTX 2070 super

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:53 PM PDT

This is my first full build in about seven years. I've eeked out all the performance I can and it's time to enjoy a solid step up.

Budget is under $2k including peripherals. I haven't settled on a screen but am open to suggestions.

I'll use this computer for work from home and gaming. I'd like to be able to do some VR , iRacing and less GPU intensive RPGs.

    Thanks for looking!

Help, I think I just damaged my thermal paste!

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 01:22 PM PDT

I just started my first build, after I put the CPU cooler in (stock Wraith cooler) but had not yet screwed it down the backplate moved. I lifted the CPU cooler off and then realigned with the backplate holes. I don't have any thermal paste as the cooler comes with and really don't want to order it. Do you think the paste was damaged after the cooler was taken off around 45s after it was put on?

How to start planning to build a PC as a complete beginner?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 09:36 AM PDT

I've wanted to build a pc since getting my first laptop that ran games at low settings in high school. Now, after graduating college, I'm finally in a stable salaried job so I can start planning for one. However, I'm so completely lost in any thread I read on this sub. Is there a "build a PC for idiots" somewhere online that I can start researching the basics? There's so many terms and parts to know that it overwhelms me (wtf is a benchmark or a PSU?) so instead of asking on here for every basic question I have, I'd rather learn the basics THEN start asking around here when I'm ready to pick parts and see compatibilities. As a structural eng who grew up with computers, I'm not clueless about computers but I need something like a road map to help guide me along. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    Help with choosing an SSD.

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:15 AM PDT

I'm going to be purchasing an SSD and had originally settled on this one

    https://www.microcenter.com/product/600949/samsung-860-qvo-1tb-ssd-4-bit-qlc-v-nand-sata-iii-6gb-s-25-internal-solid-state-drive

however I've read up a bit more on SSDs and it seems that I should be purchasing this one https://www.microcenter.com/product/501993/crucial-mx500-1tb-ssd-3d-tlc-nand-sata-iii-6gb-s-25-internal-solid-state-drive

Just wanted to confirm that the Crucial one would be better for gaming and general use.

Also after purchasing the SSD is it recommended to store my Operating System(Windows 10) on the SSD or should I just use it as a 2nd drive to store games?

I currently have a really old 1tb harddrive from 2009, so what i'd think to do is completely ditch the 1tb HDD 2and just only use the 1tb SSD but i'm unsure if that is wise.

    AM4 Motherboards with Thunderbolt

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 10:04 AM PDT

I have purchased everything for an AMD build except the motherboard. I would like a motherboard that supports Thunderbolt, either natively or through an add-on card. I would also like Bluetooth, either natively or through an M.2 card.

I have been using Raison John Bassig's spreadsheet to narrow down my choices, and it looks like I'm stuck between ASRock X570, Asus B550, Gigabyte X570, and Gigabyte B550 boards.

Originally I was leaning towards the ASRock X570 boards, but the limitations noted on the product page seems like a major annoyance:

*1: Only three TB3 devices can be detected.

*2 : Some USB 3.2 Type-C devices will cause system reboot after wake up from S3/S4.

*3 : Cannot light up the TB3 monitor after wake up from S3/S4, re-plug the cable is needed.

*4 : Does not support Thunderbolt 3 PCIe graphics card box.

I was leaning towards getting one of the higher-end Gigabyte X570 boards, but the B550 models look like a nice option as well. What am I losing out on by going with B550, and would it matter considering the other parts I am using?

Nobody here finished their build but feels like nothing has changed so far ?

    Posted: 03 Aug 2020 04:17 AM PDT

So I finished my build 3 weeks ago. I went from a 3rd generation Intel CPU to a Ryzen 5 3600/RX 5600 XT build. First off, I thought building a PC would have been an experience, but no. It just gave me a headache, especially the cables installation. So I finished everything, installed Windows aaaaaand that's it. I haven't got any hype or stuff like that. Maybe because I was prepared to this moment for so long that in the end I got used to it before actually getting it. It was the same for the games, I played it, cool, but I was never really surprised. It's hard to describe but it really feels like nothing changed, like I already had this PC before. Anybody got the same experience ?
