This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

We need to stop this "Intel bad AMD good" hive mentality

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:07 AM PDT

I'm not an "Intel fanboy". I'm not an "AMD fanboy". I'm a fanboy of my bank balance. People, none of these companies care about you; they care about their profits and their stakeholders.

Now on to the topic. YES, Ryzen is an EXCELLENT platform. It really is, and it really has brought the competition that benefits the end user. But this does NOT mean we should be saying "oh there's like no competition, Ryzen is better value hands down". This is NOT true.

The 3600 vs 10400 vs 10400F is an excellent mid-range example of this.

If I posted on this subreddit and asked for a mid-range build, most people would recommend a Ryzen 3600; and that's great! It really is an excellent value CPU. But what people fail to realise is that so is the i5 10400F. Both are 6/12 CPUs and both offer VERY similar gaming performance, indistinguishable to the to the end user if you played a few games using both CPUs.

The problem with recommending only a 3600, and not pointing out that the 10400F has very similar performance, is that people will not even bother checking the price of a 10400/10400F. If the 10400F is cheaper than the 3600, why would you not get it?

Sincerely, from someone whose friend bought a 3600 over a 10400 for video editing on Adobe Premiere Pro because "AMD is better for productivity". For those who are unaware Adobe Premiere Pro greatly benefits from Intel QSV in both timeline scrubbing and rendering times. A 10400 will destroy a 10400F and a 3600 in Premiere Pro (with HW acceleration ofc). Worst part is, the 10400 was on sale on $299AUD where I live, compared to the Ryzen 3600 costing the normal $349AUD.

Edit: number of downvotes really speaks for how much people don't like listening to logic and sticking with the AMD good Intel bad mentality.

I'm buying my son a monitor and I have no clue of what I should be looking for.

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:01 AM PDT

Hi! First of all, English is not my first language, so please, bear with me. I'm looking for a monitor between 200-300€ but I'm clueless. I've seen all about IPS, TN and the different panels, the different refresh rates and, well... here I amb asking for your help. It would be used primarily to view movies. Also it should be available to purchase in Europe. Thank you all!

A 10 year goal of mine was achieved.....I have Ascended

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:37 PM PDT

At age 32, I was finally able to build my first PC!

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:14 AM PDT

I did it. At age 32, I finally was able to afford my own computer.

Now, I've had laptops and things through college, but not like a 'Computer' computer with a capital C. To me, this guy is a beast. After browsing this sub, it seems pretty standard for a first build here but man do I love this thing. It may have too much rgb--or not enough--for most folks, but with it being a first build, I wanted it to shine.

My uncle, who is a computer guy (but old school who thinks all towers look like compaq presario's), likened it to a bio-luminescent squid who lives in the deep dark depths of the ocean, so it's name is will reflect that. It was going to be the Kraken, but 1) thanks Seattle for taking it and 2) i don't feel like it's quite big enough to be named that.

At any rate, please see my build and let me know what you think! I had to cancel a few items due to back order and it took roughly 3 weeks for the parts to come in but I made it to the finish line with help from my buddy who's steam account is old enough to drive at this point! (Note: I don't believe those are the final prices in which I paid for my parts, the below list is showing current pricing).

What still needs to be done...The rgb cooler works great but the stock fans that came with the case do not work/no room on the mother board to plug in so I had to order some splitters and hope that'll solve the problem! I went with a Corsair desk pad, and my mouse/keyboard are Logitech. I believe my wife is getting me a headset or speakers for my b-day so I can get rid of this soundbar that auto shuts-off every 10 minutes--have no idea how to disable this 'feature'. I also am waiting on a desk delivery so I can move it from my dining room table up into our guest room/office where it'll fit perfectly.

Thanks for checking it out and now I can finally enter the ASUS raffle lol.

    My First Build at 13!

    PCPartPicker

I had recently just finished building my own computer after saving up money from re-selling and trading stocks. I went for a mostly black and white build as it would fit my room perfectly. The build looks 10x better in person. This PC is mostly for editing and coding as-well as light gaming. On the building aspect of the build, it went VERY smooth. I had almost no problems as I only just made my front fans exhaust on accident but flipped them after I realized. Please give me insight on how I did! But for myself I think I did pretty decent for my first time;)

Specs: Ryzen 5 3600, AMD Wraith Prism Cooler, Asrock B550M Pro4, T-Force Delta RGB 16GB DDR4-3200 CL16, Silicon Power A60 256GB, Seagate Barracuda 2TB, EVGA GeForce 1660 Super, Corsair CXM550 80+ Bronze, DLM21 Mesh White, EZDIY-Fab 6 Pack Case Fans, and Cheap White Cable Extensions from Amazon

First Build Complete, Thanks To Everyone who Helped!

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 05:48 AM PDT

I was super nervous about making the switch from laptop to desktop, but I finally pulled the trigger and followed a tutorial and built myself a computer. I was super nervous that I had damaged the CPU, since I had to reseat it several times, and I was worried that the CPU cooler was putting uneven pressure on the CPU at first, but I walked away for a few minutes and found out that all I had to do was take the cooler off and put it back on more evenly, then screw down like a halve turn at a time for all four 4 times, then I could do a couple turns each until the screws bottomed out. Other than that the build went super smoothly. When I first turned it on I had a small panic attack when nothing happened, but then I realized my dumbass self had forgotten to turn the switch on the back of the PSU on. Once I did that, the computer turned on the very first time and asked for a boot device. I turned it off then on again and went into the BIOS and enabled XMP profiles for the RAM, then turned it off, plugged my windows USB in, and turned it on. The computer showed the splash screen for a second, then went straight into the windows installer without me having to select a boot device. When I first turned the system on, the GPU was not showing up, despite the fact that I had plugged the HDMI cable into it, but after a few minutes of getting motherboard drivers set up, the screen went black, my resolution went from 768p to 1080p, and I got a notification that Nvidia control panel was installed. Sure enough, when I opened up task manager, the card was detected. Not sure what happened there, but I wasn't going to argue. I had an engagement right after I finished installing drivers, so I haven't played any games yet, but so far everything looks good. Thank you all so much for your help and support, and I really couldn't have done it without this subreddit.

    Specs:

    • Ryzen 5 2600x
    • Gigabyte b450m ds3h
    • 16GB T-Force Vulcan Z 3200mhz
    • 1tb Crucial NVMe m.2 ssd
    • Corsair CV550
    • Thermaltake Versa H18 TG
    • GTX 1650 super OC

Can I build a pc that will run two separate workstations?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:36 AM PDT

I'm building a garage/workshop at my house. I'd like to have one computer that can support two separate workstations (one in my woodworking shop, one on the garage side. I'd like to do this so I can keep my saved files that I need to access from either side of my shop on one computer. Ideally, I'd have one or two monitors at each workstation (I'm a multiple monitor enthusiast), a keyboard and a trackball wireless mouse.

    Coming from Mac to PC

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 07:14 AM PDT

I've been a long time Mac user but recently have been fed up with a lot of the choices they have made with their new computers. I know I can pay much less with a PC build. I am new to the PC world but am very interested in switching over. I am mostly doing music production, photo and video editing (premiere pro). I want a computer that can basically export my footage at a lightning fast speed. I saw a video comparing a mac pro to a PC with Threadripper which is something id be interested in. (https://www.4kshooters.net/2020/04/28/15000-mac-pro-vs-5000-threadripper-for-video-editing/)

I also love how you can see through the case. Someone posted this in another thread... looks amazing https://i.imgur.com/V2256uh.jpg

I would also love to have more than 4 USB ports. USB-C sucks and has accidentally ejected my hard drive more than once.

What build would be good for the type of work I do?

    Additional questions:

For programs like premiere should I be using intel or AMD?

How can I make sure all my Ableton files copy over. For example, I use a lot of third-party software. I want to make sure I don't mess up my projects.

    Edit: Budget is around $4000

    Thanks!

Parts I'll add from my current PC:

    • western digital 1tb hard drive

    Are these temperetures ok?

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 07:59 AM PDT

Hi, I recently assebled a PC:

    CPU - Ryzen 5 1600 AF

GPU - Gigabyte 1660 Super OC

    Case - CoolerMaster Q300L

The case doesn't offer the best thermals, so I was wondering if I should be worried about it.

On Idle I get 40-45C on CPU and about the same for GPU. In games CPU ramps up to ~65-75C and GPU about the same (few degrees more maybe). I've set a bit more aggressive fan curve on cpu/chassis/gpu fans but I'm still a bit worried temps are high. Should I be worried?

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Upgrading my six year old PC

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 01:18 PM PDT

    Hey!

So nearly six years ago I built my first and only PC, and after a couple years of not being able to use it as I was living in a small shared house, I now have a place of my own and plenty of room to set it up. But I'm guessing (I know) six years is a long time ago, so I'm looking at upgrading a few bits and really just looking for any advice and clarity on what you would do with this build?

I'm not fussed about state of the art graphics but the capability to play the majority of modern games without the PC melting would be great. The main things I was looking at upgrading was the GFX card and sticking in another 8gb of RAM. I'm also considering a new, smaller and lighter case, as I've realised just how big and cumbersome (albeit incredibly solid) my current case is.

Is there anything else that could be improved upon or recommendations? Sorry, this is a bit of me rambling as I've basically forgotten everything I did and any reasonings behind this specific build. But any advice or thoughts greats appreciated!

    Thanks

    Need Help!!!

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 10:16 AM PDT

I have a question about a psu that was suggested to me. Do I have to change any of the options such as the EPS/ATX Connectors: 2 x EPS 8-pin, PCIe 6+2-Pin Connectors: 6, SATA Connectors: 10, and Molex 4-Pin Connectors: 5 so that it could be compatible with my motherboard? I'm sorry if this is a basic question but this my first ever build. I will give the links to my motherboard and the psu that was suggested to me. If I have to order the psu a with certain connectors can some please help me make sure I get the right one?

Just impulse bought an RX 5700 XT to upgrade my current 1060 3GB, only to just find out that my PSU doesn't meet the requirements of the RX 5700 XT

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 11:24 AM PDT

I have a 550w PSU, the "minimum" wattage on the RX 5700 XT box says 600w or greater.

So, now I get to wait a week until I have enough money for a new power supply, but I am very disappointed by this revelation. Already spent my whole paycheck on the card, and I have other things I need to save for.

Question for the thread: Is it safe for me to try it out with my current PSU to see if it will work until I can get a more efficient one, or is the risk too great? I've seen threads saying that 500-550 is enough for the card, but the answer seems to vary from "oh it'll be fine, they don't actually require that much" to "worst case scenario, you burn your house down"

    16GB 3200MHz C14 or 32GB 3200MHz C16

    Posted: 30 Jul 2020 08:18 AM PDT

So I have a Ryzen 3700X with 16GB B-die 3200MHZ C14 RAM. When I test it on userbenchmark it says my RAM is underperforming. I have XMP active and the RAM is running at it's advertised speed. I'm wondering if it would be beneficial or not to sell the C14 RAM for 32GB of C16 RAM of the same speeds? Would this lower performance at all? I mostly use my pc for gaming and basic photo/video editing. Thanks for the help!
