This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

A build that's been 3 years in the making – ever since AMD announced the Ryzen line, I knew that I had to put together a true Zen-themed build one day. Finally finished it, extremely proud :)

Feedback and comments are most welcomed! Please see pcpartpicker link for more detailed photos of the build coming together :)

My $1000 build after 3 months of planning

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 03:06 AM PDT

So my last desktop was a pre-built from a decade ago, and for the past 3-4 years, I've been a console (Switch) and phone gamer. So for the past 3 months, I've had a lot of friends who have been playing Valorant and I decided to get into the game myself as it looks fun (Used to play Overwatch back in 2015-2017 and also CS: Go, so it looked just up my alley.)

Decided to build my own PC for the first time without any prior knowledge, but thanks to this community and Youtube videos basically teaching dummies how to build a PC. So with 3 months worth of research, choosing specific parts and brands, and waiting for sales for some parts, I have finally completed my build!

My 5700XT had a lot of green screens/BSOD for the first couple of days but tried some solutions like changing the PCI from Auto/Gen 4 to Gen 3, undervolted it, did a clean re-install of drivers and increased the fan RPM to cool it better and I think I have managed to tame this beast, no more issues for the past 3-4 days.

    Build:
    Ryzen 5 3600
    MSI B450 Tomahawk
    Transcent 512GB SSD
    Sapphire Nitro+ RX 5700XT RGB
    Tecware Nexus Evo Case
Cooler Master MWE 550W 80+ Gold
    Corsair 2 x 8GB 3600mHz RAM
Cooler Master Masterliquid Lite AIO Cooler
    Comfast Wifi-6 Card

    https://imgur.com/a/vMNiP5I

My HDD has some issues unresolved but I'm pretty sure it's the hardware defect as I have tried every possible solution and it still didn't work. It was a $20 WD 2TB HDD from China, after all, the original price was supposed to be around 50-60 bucks? Gonna buy a new one when the time comes, but for now, it'll have to do.

    I am desperate

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:37 PM PDT

Im on the verge of a breakdown. I finished my first PC build yesterday started it, installed windows on my SSD personalized my pc downloaded some Software for my msi Motherboard, Razer Synapse, Opera and Steam.

I started steam and tried to install dying light in my HDD, wich wasnt possible, because the System didnt recognize my 4tb HDD. I fixes the problem in Disk management and thought, that everything was fine. I started steam again and tried to download Dying Light in my HDD wich didnt work. I tried it several times, but everytime i did, steam just got stick in the download preperation Phase and when i tried to go to the download cache steam cradmshed and i had to turn my PC of and on again to exit steam. Sometimes it was necessary that i turned my pc of and on again several times before it would Boot. When i was tried if trying i just installed dying light in my SSD (wich worcked fine) and called it a day. When i woke this morning i saw that DL was downloaded succesfully. I played it for 4 hours and then i tried to solve the Problem with the HDD. I was persistant and in the process, turned my PC of and on (probably 16 times or more) again. I couldnt achieve to install another game (The Evil Within) in my Harddrive, but when i turned my PC oft for the last time it wouldnt turn on again.

The Situation im having right now is the following:

The Red VGA light on my motherboard lights up when i trie to boot my pc. My Monitor will turn on but it is the state of turned on, where it just shows a black screen and for a short amount of time a little line, like this one: _ in the upper left part of my screen. All my components glow and work (as gar as i can tell) The Ram sticks glow, the CPU cooler, the Motherboard, the graphics card glows (and her fand are working) and the fans work.

I tried to change my hdmi cable, to take out RAM stick it back in again seperately (aledgedly works sometimes, i took my graphicscard out of the System and Cleaned it and the Port and i tried if All the cables stick in correctly. The only tip i didnt follow was to reset bios in the motherboard, because i didnt make any changes to it.

I am at the brink of collapse. Non of the things i found online worcked and i couldnt find a case that resembeled mine 1 to 1.

Sorry for any grammar/spelling mistakes i teached english to myself, am quite young and very very tired.

    I need your help, please.

The accumulation of ideas ends up in one build.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 08:07 AM PDT

    Photos

Been working on this project for the past 6 month, hundreds of hours went into design and parts sourcing. The build itself took 40hrs+, but oh boy is it all worth it.

    Parts list:

    3950x on X570 Aorus Master

    2080ti HOF plus

    1TB of pcie ssd *2

    4000mhz HOF ram 8gb *4

    TT Core P5 Case.

I'm thinking about naming the project to be CORE P5 AIO as it can function as an AIO computer (screen with built-in PC). This is more like a PC with built-in screen, but similar enough. Any other cool naming suggestions?

So like after building a pc, what are the things that you have to keep up to date and maintain?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 09:50 AM PDT

No your Ryzen CPU isn't overheating on the stock cooler

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 07:59 AM PDT

is it under 95C? then you're fine. you can tell when you are ACTUALLY overheating when your CPU starts turning down its clock speed to lower the temps. this is called thermal throttling and doesn't happen until 95C. up until that point not only will it run at its stock clocks but will continue boosting as high as it can

This is by far the most common issue I see people asking about and i'm not really sure why. thats how hot it gets with the cooler they give you. obviously its sufficient and not damaging.

fear not. your CPU will get hot. thats OK. game on

Hello, I've been planning to build a PC for a couple of months and I cannot decide, whether to buy a i9-9900K or to wait and buy the 10900k version (which would also require some hefty money on the motherboard). I want to build a top notch build which would last me at least a couple of years (ultra settings, high fps and so on). I'm still waiting for the RTX 3080ti release to finally complete this set. Which motherboard would fit best each of these CPU?

Finished first build, not as good as I expected?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:00 PM PDT

So I built my first PC, with an RTX 2060 Super, Ryzen 5 3600, and 2x8GB 3600MHz RAM. But I get similar FPS as my friend's PC with a GTX 1060 (6GB), i5-7600k (he hasn't overclocked), and 2x8GB 2133MHz RAM. On games such as GTA 5 and Just Cause 4 we get similar FPS at max settings, however on ARK we get similar FPS but I'm at max and he's at medium/high.

I know for a fact that my GPU is better, but not sure about the CPU. Is the reason I'm getting similar FPS to his PC because of my CPU?
I'm not trying to one-up at his PC, it's just that I spent a lot of money on my PC and expected more than this, and I'm using his PC as a comparison.

Old build brought out of storage - Any parts worth keeping?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 01:51 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I built a pc with this subreddits much-needed help 8 years ago. After a few years use I went to uni and the build got left behind in favour of a laptop and put into storage.. (forgive me!).

I'm considering making a new build & I'm wondering if any of the parts I have are worth keeping, or are now totally out of date?

I'll keep the peripherals & the 212 but I'm clueless on the rest, totally out of practice!

(I tried Monster Hunter World earlier today & the build was barely able to keep up even with the lowest specs, which surprised me a little).

    Feel like its to hot

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:27 PM PDT

So I have a Dark rock pro 4 cooling my i9-9900K. So when I ran Cinabench on it before the temps would be at around 70 to 72 C. But I ran it yesterday and for some reason it got all the way to 84 C! So I'm wondering if I need to reapply thermal paste. It seemed like both the heat sink fans were spinning. Im planning to reapply it anyway to put my NVME drive in. My question is do I need a new cooler? Maybe better paste. I'm currently using Artic-MX 4 for my thermal paste. Thanks for the help!

PC won't start up after much troubleshooting. Please help!

    SPECS

Hi there, I have recently built a PC in the last couple of weeks. It was functioning fine (except for a faulty AIO pump fan, so I replaced the AIO) until a few days ago. I was finishing up playing some Kenshi, shut my PC down then went to bed. The next day it refused to boot. No POST, nothing. I press power button: nada.

Here is what I have already tried:

    • I have tested the PSU with the bit of plastic it comes with that shorts the pins that switch it on. It runs and the fan spins.

The following I tried with only the two ATX and a few fans plugged into power:

    • I have tried bridging the two front panel pins for the power switch (third and forth from the top of the front panel area). No response.

    • I changed the CMOS battery. No change.

    • I lifted the motherboard out of the case and onto a plastic cutting mat and bridged the power pins again. Unfortunately due to the akwardness of the AIO tubes I could only plug in the big ATX power and couldn't plug in the 12v. It did not boot.

    • I've looked over the motherboard and can't see any scorch marks or bloated capacitors.

I am out of ideas. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping that the motherboard isn't just fubar'd, defo can't afford to replace it especially after having to replace the AIO.

So, any and all advice is appreciated!

One thing I noticed. When I switch the PSU on at the back, the RGB components of the motherboard flash on then off for a split moment. I think, it used to do that normally before? But to be honest I've not had it long enough to remember.

Please help! Thank you in advance :)

UPDATE: I have tried with a second known good PSU and cannot get it going with just the ATXs plugged into the second PSU.

Can't find a motherboard for my build?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:12 PM PDT

I've had my computer for around 7 years, so it's overdue for some upgrades. I got a new video card to replace my petering GEForce 780 (GEForce RTX 2060) first, and I then needed a new processor to prevent bottlenecking. I bought the Intel i7-8700k 3.7 GHz but woe is me, i neglected to see if my motherboard was compatible and it turned out it isn't, so I guess I need a new motherboard? My problem is, after putting all the parts of my build on PCPartPicker, there's no compatible mobos?! I don't want to make the mistake and pull the trigger on a mobo without knowing it'll fit fine like I did with the processor, so is there actually no motherboards that can fit with this build??? I plan on using this to edit in Adobe Photoshop & Lightroom, as well as medium-AAA gaming (1080p, 60fps, 75 Hz+ monitor)

Budget is around $1200-1300 & all parts will be purchased within Canada

Would this PSU be overkill? And is having a singular NVMe bad over having an NVMe/HDD combo besides cost? Thanks!

    First Gaming/daily-use PC

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Games I plan to play games like: Project Slippi (Super Smash Bros Melee), Fortnite, Overwatch, Dark Souls, The Division 2, Call of Duty Warzone.

I also plan to use this PC for light video capture and editing. Nothing major, I just don't want my machine to be stretched to its limits to run these games so much that I could not stream or record at all on top.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

Mostly shooting for 1080 but with some wiggle room for 1440. Looking for minimum 60 fps on ultra settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Looking to stay under $1500.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States of America

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Upgrade path from Ryzen 5 1600.

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 12:00 PM PDT

    Hello!

I am currently in the process of upgrading some of my components. My ultimate plan is to purchase a Ryzen 4xxx series processor when they launch. To prep for this I purchased an Asus Tuf X570 board. My initial plan was to run the R5 1600 until the launch and then get the 4xxx processor.

To my surprise (I feel kind of dumb for not checking) the R5 1600 is not compatible with X570 chipsets. My question is this. Should I purchase a Ryzen 5 3600 now or wait? Will I be able to sell the Ryzen 5 3600 for 120+ after the launch of the 4th gen processors? Will there be a big enough difference between the 3600 and 4600 for it to even matter? Just curious what your thoughts are. Thanks!

Using different thermal paste brands for CPU and GPU

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:32 PM PDT

This might be a stupid question but are there any problems aside from thermal quality from using different thermal paste brands on the CPU and GPU? I just ordered the Arctic MX-4 and it will arrive in two days but my cousin gave me a spare Grizzly Kryonaut which is only enough for one application. I'm thinking for putting the Kryonaut on the cpu and the MX-4 on the GPU but I'm scared it might cause problems.

    Thank you.

Msi b450 tomahawk max or tuf gaming x570-plus wifi?

Tuf gaming has a display port, more USB ports, more m.2 ports, more sata ports, wifi, etc. But is it the extra money worth it when there is a display port on my graphics card, I can get a USB dock, and I'm not gonna be using all the m.2/sata ports?

No video signal after windows install

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:24 PM PDT

So I just installed windows 10 on the pc I just built and for some reason right after configuring it (answering the questions about privacy and all that), it showed the "This might take several minutes" message, it seemed like it loaded everything, but then it just had a black screen and no video output on the monitor, but ale the rgb in the case, fans and the pump from the aio are still working.

After turning it off and back on it shows the Asus logo from the motherboard BIOS and allows you to enter the BIOS, but if you don't enter it and let it try to enter windows, it again shows no signal.

I'm using an RTX 2070 Super Gaming x Trio from MSI Tried reinstalling windows, but it didn't help. What should I do in this situation? Should I install some additional drivers for it to work, or should it just work out of the box?

Just making sure I have what I need

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 02:21 PM PDT

Hey guys, so I'm just looking for someone to double check my pc building. I have a budget of about $1000 and I want to be able to build something that can run competitive games at 144 fps and is able to play more graphically intense casual games on the highest settings at 1440p. I mostly want to make sure that the MOBO, GPU, and CPU are all good for what im trying to do. Any other advice would be appreciated aswell.

Should I build this ITX system now or wait?

    Posted: 19 Jul 2020 09:04 AM PDT

I'm currently gaming on a system with a 960, 8gb of ram and some i5 that matches the 960 in performance and currently mostly play games like valorant or Csgo which it runs without any issues. However, I've been looking to upgrade since I would like to play all sorts of hardware demanding games and I am somewhat limited by my current pc.

The link at the bottom leads to a build I came up with. I'm looking to spend 1000-1500€ to play WQHD resolution and/or at 144hz

1st: What are your thoughts on the parts I picked?

2nd: Should I upgrade now or wait for the new graphics cards to release? I would be ok with playing on this system for a few more months especially since it frustrates me so much that I could have built the same pc 9 months ago for about the same price... But then I always told myself to wait for the new generation for 2 years now and it never really seems like the perfect point in time to upgrade.

This video is just wholesome. And I'm not sure, but DDR5 should be coming in 2021. And considering that hynix was able to get a DDR5 to 6400 MT/s in 2019, I wonder how Intel would work around with that.

What are your thoughts? And apologies if i said something wrong.
