Optane works great for virtual RAM

    Posted: 04 May 2020 12:36 PM PDT

I've been thinking for many months about expanding my RAM, since rendering Ultra quality dense clouds in Metashape is very memory intensive.
Today i got that cheap 32GB Optane M10 module i had ordered, and here are the results:

    PC Specs:
    Ryzen 3700X
    RTX 2070
    64GB 3200MHz DDR4
    Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master
    Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB

    Number of photos: 162
    Image size: 12 Megapixel JPEG

    64GB RAM
    Alignment: 1 minute 58 seconds
Dense Cloud Medium Quality: 3 minutes 44 seconds
Dense Cloud High Quality: 16 minutes 3 seconds

    3,5GB RAM + 27GB Optane Virtual Memory
    Alignment: 2 minutes 1 seconds
Dense Cloud Medium Quality: 4 minutes 14 seconds
Dense Cloud High Quality: 23 minutes 19 seconds

The memory was limited in msconfig, and the vertual memory assigned through the tool native to Windows 10.
Of course there is some extra time taken with the Optane, seeing that the latency is greater than 10X that of DDR4 (probably way more) and the sequential write speed only 650MB/s on these cheap consumer modules.
But it's still a great result, seeing as Metashape simply won't work though the whole workload if the system runs out of memory.
The system also capped the 3,5GB RAM limit at startup, and even if all of the system resources were offset to the Optane i am sure that it carried at least 50-70% of the workload on the High settings.

I also tried to play Forza Horizon 4 on the 3,5 + 27GB setup in my usual 4K resolution.
It worked fine, except when it didn't. Smooth as butter half the time, and FPS scrambling on anything between 5 and 60 when loading resources the other half.

With these results i feel confident to save for a used Optane 900P for this specific use.

    Open source Motherboard

    Posted: 04 May 2020 07:35 PM PDT

I could see most of the motherboard's come from big brands. Most of them are proprietary in one way or another. Why Isn't there any open source alternative motherboard. .. or do i lack my sight on this.

The same applies to router hardware.
