    Simple Questions - May 04, 2020

    Posted: 04 May 2020 05:17 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

It took a while to become confident & I had to ask a bunch of silly questions. I was scared to push too hard on my RAM, I forgot to move my stand off for my SSD. After all that I managed to build a setup I’m proud of. Thank you for all the help everyone!

    I build a trash pc ( i think)

    Posted: 04 May 2020 05:18 AM PDT

I've build a pc on my own a few months ago and spend about 1k, it has trouble running rocket league and other games.

The specs in my pc are:

    AMD ryzen 5 2600 6coreNvidia geforce gtx 1660 superAsrock b450m pro 4Corsair cx550mCorsair vengeance lpx 16 gbSamsung v-nand ssd 860 evo sata 6gb/swdc wd20EFRX-68EUZN0

I used the cpu cooler that came with the ryzen.I've downloaded the drivers of my motherboard and videocard.

I wonder if I used a bad combination, or if there might be any other issues.

edit: I've installed amd ryzen master software and now my rocket league runs solid, allthough it still doesnt launch fast: https://imgur.com/a/yI8Qvd5

EDIT: Here are photo's of my pc. Sorry for bad cable management :) https://imgur.com/a/M4VAJcn
Is my ssd not plugged in? https://imgur.com/a/JIIwAES . the WC is my HDD I think.

    Thanks in advance :)

We made an interactive PC building guide. Feedback please

    Posted: 04 May 2020 08:59 AM PDT

My colleague and I made an interactive PC building guide https://voltcave.com/build-gaming-pc/, hoping to make it a painless new way for anyone to learn how to build or upgrade a PC.

I won't explain too much because I'm wondering how intuitive/helpful it is. We've been staring at this for too long and would appreciate some outside feedback!

After nearly 10 years of only gaming laptops, I finally feel like I’m able to have the room for a desktop, and I’m super happy with how it came out.

    Posted: 03 May 2020 06:42 PM PDT

I have built PCs in the past, but they were for other people or for work. Now it's my turnComplete Build , and I'm super happy with the result. I'll eventually pair it with a better monitor, but for now, I'm stoked with the outcome. Kills it on high refresh 1080p gaming, which is all I care for.

Note on the processor, I actually went with the 1600 "AF", but pcpartpicker doesn't have an listing for it, so it's using the "AE" variant, but I changed the price to reflect an AF with tax (WA sales tax sucks)

    Mobo for Ryzen 5 3600

    Posted: 04 May 2020 08:11 AM PDT

I'm trying to upgrade my mobo and cpu, but can't find a mobo in stock anywhere. Price range is under $150 US. Just trying to get it here within a week or so. Prefer ATX to micro. Switching over from Intel so I won't have the old cpu to flash BIOS although it sounds like that may no longer be an issue.

Corsair's software is garbage, and I regret my recent upgrade build. Everyone should stay away from it.

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:12 AM PDT

iCUE is hot garbage and makes me want to sell all of my corsair related products in my build ASAP.

I wanted an aesthetically pleasing build and spent a ton of money on this setup. I now immensely regret every part of the corsair stuff I purchased which was a TON.

The software is spiking my CPU and RAM every couple of hours while doing minimal tasks. I can game all night, no issues, but as soon as I start messing with iCUE for fan curves, lighting effects, etc... or I'm watching videos on youtube, or even small processes within the PC, I will get major freezing/lag spikes that last 2 or 3 minutes unless I force restart via the hardware button on my PC.

    Here are my specs:

    • Ryzen 5 3600
    • ASRock B450M Pro4
    • Vengeance RGB Ram 16gb
    • RTX 2070 Super
    • H100i RGB Platinum AIO
    • 1 TB SSD
    • 500gb SSD
    • Corsair Commander Pro
    • 2 Additional LL120 Case Fans
    • Crystal 280x Case

I have easily ruled out the CPU, GPU, and MoBo from causing the issue because I had all 3 of these before I did my recent rebuild. All my new rebuild stuff included was the Corsair items. Read that again. The only MAJOR CHANGES I HAD WERE ADDING CORSAIR ITEMS TO MY BUILD

I have gotten lucky and I was able to pull up my Task Manager when one of the lag/freezes was happening only to see that Corsair.Service.CpuldRemote was taking up 10.5% of my CPU usage. The freezes happen most often while watching videos on YT or similar types of processes, not while gaming for hours on end...

Ever since I installed corsair stuff, my PC is having more issues than it ever had before. I have tried googling this issue and each time it comes back to people having to make major changes to how they run iCue, or each time they want to change a profile, completely shutting down the service and starting back up etc....

This is unacceptable, and for how beautiful this build is, it's not worth the hassle of dealing with this on a daily basis. I'd much rather go to another company who's software isn't killing my system multiple times a day while doing what should be, tasks that don't require iCue's input.

I am at a crossroads here at which I'm very close to just selling all my corsair related items and rebuilding from there.

Please be aware for anyone that wants to build with corsair's items, it's not worth the RGB tax or hassle.

Upgrade CPU or GPU? What makes a bigger difference?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 11:56 AM PDT

    Hey r/buildapc,

With all that's going on, and some extra income I'm lucky to have, I was considering upgrading my PC. My goal is to maximize my frame-rate and be relatively future-proof (whatever that means in this hobby). I'm getting around 70fps playing Assassin's Creed Odyssey with some settings optimization at 1440p. I've been using the computer all day though, and I guess I need something to tinker with. Right now, I have this setup:

    Ryzen 7 2700 with a EVGA 2070 Super. RAM is Corsair 2x16gb, with a Samsung 32" Monitor 144hz/1440p.

I was thinking of getting a Ryzen 9 3900x CPU, but I'm wondering if I should save the money and try to work up to a 2080ti GPU. I use the computer primarily for gaming and running a Plex server.

I don't really understand how to check for bottlenecks and I can't anticipate what the move should be. Does anyone have any thoughts they could lend me?

    Loving my first build!!

    Posted: 04 May 2020 09:27 AM PDT

I put together my PC over the weekend and couldn't be happier with the results! Here's a list of my parts:

    Ryzen 5 3600 Asus X570-Prime Pro Crucial Ballistix RGB (2x8gb) Kraken M22 Sapphire Nitro + 5700xt Evga 650 gq Fractal Meshify C

Overall, this was an awesome experience! My brother had been trying to convince me for years to put together my own PC and I figured being stuck at home would be the perfect time! Of all thingsi, it took me FOREVER to make a windows boot drive because all I have is a MacBook. The rest of it was just following instructions and taking my time.

How are wireless gaming headsets nowadays?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 06:31 AM PDT

For the last few months I've been using my anker liberty neo wireless earphones for my games, however, I have the option to either hear the game or hear the discord on hands free mode, not both. This is due to the shit bandwidth I'd imagine. Thing is I really don't want to go back to wired, I can see there are a few wireless headsets on amazon but I worry the same will happen, either discord or the game will be the only thing I can hear, not both. Are there any solid recommendations for this? Will the bandwidth issues be gone with an actual gaming headset over some Bluetooth earphones? Cheers

What sata PCIe card would you recommend?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:09 PM PDT

I've run out of sata ports on the motherboard and need to add another HDD. I've never had to use a pci card so I'm really not sure what brand makes the best one? I suppose it matters more on the chip the card is using? It's for running my Plex server.

Close to pulling the trigger, Final Revision

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:05 PM PDT

I am pretty close to buying this setup for a pc, and I think it is pretty good, but I would like your advice on it, that way I don't blow this money for nothing. I will use this primarily for gaming with some light side work and programming. I plan to be overclocking everything as soon as i get it. I live in America, and live near a microcenter. Ask if you have any questions.

    5700 xt or 2060 super

    Posted: 04 May 2020 12:08 AM PDT

I'm planning on upgrading my GPU. I currently have the RX 570. I'm between the RX 5700 XT and the RTX 2060 Super I know that the 5700 xt performs better than the 2060 super but I've had issues with the AMD drivers (games crashing) with my current card. I don't know if I should risk going with AMD or just play safe and buy an RTX 2060 super that has more stable drivers. If anyone has another card recommendation in that price range let me know. Thanks

Edit: I think I'm going to buy the 2060 super, I play 1080p 144hz and I think ill be fine with the 2060s. I don't want to deal with the AMD drivers anymore, if I get a bad 5700 xt card I will not be able to refund it and I don't want to take that risk. Thanks for everyone that commented, I appreciate your help

How hard is it to build my own PC?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 01:41 AM PDT

I am a complete rookie when it comes to computers. Now when my graphics card crashed I am thinking of either just replacing it or getting a new computer completely (it is starting to get old, soon 5 years, so a complete upgrade wouldn't hurt).

My biggest concern is that I will buy parts and then not be able to set it up. How easy/hard would it be for somebody with 0 experience to build a pc with the help of YouTube guides.

Also, do you have any guides that you recommend?

Sources to learn pc building and any tips?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:32 PM PDT

I'm interested in building a pc, where should I go to learn?

So I'm currently a PS4 gamer, and I'm interested in making the switch to PC when, or before, the PS5 comes out. Currently I game on my laptop with i5, 12gb RAM, abysmal cooling, 100gb memory and integrated graphics. I mostly play League of Minecraft on it anyways since it can't handle much, but I'm looking to play something along the lines of Destiny 2. What sources should I use to learn the absolute basics and thereon up since I'm still a console pleb.

The card works in every other system I have tried, and the motherboard posts when I put in a 8400gs. Is there some compatibility issue I am missing?

    Thoughts on my build?

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:22 PM PDT

    https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/cDmWCL

I'm sick of console gaming and want to return to the master race. I'm buying parts in Canada and my budget is ~$CAD1200.

FYI My monitor is 1080p 60hz but I may upgrade eventually and will probably upgrade the gpu to at least a 1070 when I do. Feel free to share you opinion if it's worth it to just buy a 1070 now. I also don't need a case/windows. I tried to put something together that I can upgrade, but also won't need to for a while.

My main concerns are that the stock cooler on the Ryzen 5 3600 won't suffice, and that maybe there's a better memory option out there as I've seen threads where people have had issues with their RAM and Ryzen 5 CPUs. PCPP isn't throwing up any red flags on the PSU but I know it's not a component to cheap out on.

Let me know if you think there are more efficient options out there or if I missed anything.

    Thanks guys!

If your having problems that look like HW or Driver issues try this:

    Posted: 04 May 2020 07:09 AM PDT

I have been chasing down some system wide problems for some time now. I have a 2700x and 5700xt. I have had a large number of issues since December/January. Black screens. Fans Stopping. Supposed CPU over temp errors. I've been chasing my tail. Fan reconfiguring, DDU and roll backs, bios, clean windows install. I've tried Asus AI suite, Ryzen Master and all manner of system scans. I was starting to think my hardware might be bunk.

I was unaware that you can do a Windows Validation check through the command prompt.

You open the command prompt as an admin and type: sfc /scannow

I came up with errors and checked the log. I had multiple ownership on my program files folders. The validation check repaired this and I've had not a problem since. I chased down the remain issues in event viewer and guys: I'm good now :)

If your having a lot of issues try this. I'm wondering if it's related to a windows update.

Pretty sure I screwed up purchasing some parts. Ryzen 5 3600 and MOBO

    Posted: 04 May 2020 03:11 PM PDT

I picked up a Ryzen 5 3600 and a gigabyte b450m ds3h am4 MOBO. I read, at least a year ago, that you need a 2nd gen to update the bios, even though on Newegg it claims it can do 3rd gen. Could the bios been updated by Newegg or the production on those boards updated the bios?

Hi, I will be building in the NZXT h210. My psu is the evga gm 450w, which has really short cables (300mm 24 pin for example). The h210 is a larger itx case, so I will need longer cables. What length of cable extensions do you recommend. (I've seen a lot of 300mm and 500mm). I'm trying to spend less than $40 on a kit from amazon or newegg. What brand do you recommend?

P.S. Cable extensions are universal and work with all psus, right?
