This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

PC suddenly shutdown while gaming with a burnt smell, what happened to my GTX 970? New build or just change GPU?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 10:44 AM PDT

    What is your parts list?

    ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0

    AMD FX8320 @ 4.5GHz

    Corsair H100i

    Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming

    2x Kingston HyperX 4GB DDR3 1866 MHz

    ASUS Xonar DGX

    OCZ Vertex 3 120GB

    WD Blue 500GB

    WD Green 2TB

    Corsair RM850

I've had most of the parts since 2014, only the H100i and the SSD are a bit newer.

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

I've had been playing Frostpunk for some hours when my computer suddenly shutdown; I thought it was a power loss (sometimes happens) but I instantly got scared when I noticed my monitors were on and I noticed a smell of something burnt. I unplugged the power cord and opened the case but didn't see anything wrong.

I tried following the smell and I noticed it came from the GPU, after removing it from the case. I was hoping it was the PSU because it could've been an easy fix, but it looked okay. I tried booting the PC without the GPU, just to see if it would turn on and it did, it just gave a beep error code of missing GPU, so PSU/motherboard/CPU/anything else should be working fine.

I then tried turning it on with the GPU plugged in this time to see if it would work, but sadly as soon as I powered it on I noticed some sparks from the GPU and the same smell but stronger, with the computer turning off soon after. I removed the heatsink and tore down my GTX 970 and took some pics: https://imgur.com/a/JunpF22

As you can clearly see from here something blew up, I think it's the back of the MOSFETs? I'm not sure.

Obviously my GPU is gone, but I'm making this post to try to find out what happened: could it have been my PSU? I wouldn't wanna buy a new GPU just to get it blown up again :(

I also had a doubt that maybe it could've been a droplet of water from the H100i but everything looked fine.

My best guess would be that too much voltage for too long just slowly damaged it until something related to power delivery blew up. I was running it at 1.2750V, 1531 MHz clock and 1800MHz memory (see here).

I know the voltage is pretty high, but I wanted to squeeze every last megahertz. I had no issues with the temperature though; while playing Overwatch I was at a cool 60C, when running more GPU-intensive games the maximum I reached was 79C/80C. I thought that as long as my temperatures were low there weren't gonna be major issues, looks like I'm wrong? I never had any artifacts or shutdowns or freezes or whatever. Everything was running fine, until something blew up.

Post relevant photos of build/parts here.

    https://i.imgur.com/vjk2JIM.jpg <--- culprit

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Sadly I don't have another GPU to test my build. While I made this post mainly because I'm curious about what happened to my GTX 970 and if my PSU and the rest of the parts are safe to work with, I would also appreciate suggestions regarding what to do now.

I've been thinking of a new build for quite some time, I have the money needed but I wanted to wait for AM5, I don't wanna buy a new CPU now that the AM4 socket is almost at the end of the line. I could buy a mid-grade GPU and keep going till AM5, but that feels so long from now. What would you do if you were in my situation?

    Thanks for all the help!

    Thinking of upgrading

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:46 PM PDT

So... basically I made a mistake back in 2017 and bought a pre-built. I now need to upgrade and I thought I'd ask everyone on this subreddit before i pull the trigger and purchase it.

    Current System:

    CPU: AMD Athlon FX-4300

    RAM: Some generic DDR3 800mhz 16gb ram

Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. M5A78L-M LX3 (Yep, I'm actually using that in 2020)

GPU: Asus GTX 1050ti with 4gb vram

Storage: Samsung 860 qvo 1tb (I recently upgraded this so I'm gonna keep this in the new system)

PSU: I don't even know its some generic 500w 80 plus thing but it looks real dodgy

    Upgraded system:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700

RAM: Corsair vengeance LPX DDR4-3200 2x8gb ram

Motherboard: ASRock B450M Pro4-F Micro ATX

    GPU: Gigabyte OC RTX 2060

    Storage: Staying the same

    PSU: CORSAIR CV550 ATX PSU - 550 W

Also, I am not buying all of this now, and all of it at once. I am buying the CPU, motherboards and RAM in july, then the GPU and PSU in December. I'm stuck with a 1050 ti for a while.... I am also hoping to buy some of this stuff on prime day, black friday and cyber monday, just to save a little bit of money. Thanks for any help given in the comments!

CAUTION! Please learn from my mistake. EVGA PSU replacement cables fries entire system.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:41 PM PDT

A tale of caution and warning for anything newer and as mistaken as I am. DO NOT REPLACE YOUR PSU CABLES IF YOU DONT HAVE TO!!! I recently ordered replacement cables from EVGA to swap their default black cables with their own individually Sleeved white canles for a cosmetic upgrade. During the upgrade nothing special happened just swapping 24 pin ATX power, 4+4 CPU and 2 6+2 GPU cables. My PSU failed during this swap, and it took out EVERYTHING connected. PSU, CPU, MOBO, GPU all dead.

Evga PSU with their own brand replacement cable's and it still failed

    M.2 NVMe SSD's vs Sata SSD's?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 04:04 AM PDT

So I recently got a 1TB M.2 NVMe SSD to replace my 120GB Sata SSD as my boot drive. I was comparing the read/write speeds and the M.2 SSD had read/write speeds of 3400/3000 MB/s whereas the Sata SSD had read/write's of around 530/370 MB/s. I thought holy shit the M.2 is so much better, but there is almost no difference to load times and after watching various videos comparing load times, the M.2 is only marginally better, so why is that? Why is there only a marginal increase in load times when the read/write speeds are so much faster?

    Recommended Laptop For Under $500?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:59 PM PDT

    Hey,

So I got approved for a $500 pre-paid technology card for college. (Expires 1/2021)

Now i don't necessarily have to spend it on a laptop, but I think i'd like one.

I'm a huge PC gamer and have a great desktop build, but I know absolutely nothing about laptops or what is good or not. Only thing I can think of is just searching "best selling laptops on amazon" and going with the first thing that pops up.

    A few requirements:

Must be ~$450 (under the $500 pre-paid limit with taxes) if not on amazon.

If on Amazon I think i can combine it with about $300 of gift card credit.

Side Note: Will likely be used for college work, MS office, nothing too demanding, Smaller Indie games on Steam, and probably Runescape when I'm traveling. Longer battery life is preferred over performance.

Accidentally scratched my motherboard with the screwdriver, no post from GPU now

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:56 PM PDT

As the title says I have absolutely screwed up my motherboard with some scratches/dents by mistake and dizziness. Now the gpu will not post anything but the internal graphics are working as intended and my whole pc is fine. I have tried both pcie ports, nothing. I will attach a video with the gpu symptoms as well as a photo with the dent/s. They are between the cpu and pcie 16x port. Could the gpu be damaged as well? Bios will not recognise anything from my pcie slots. The dent/s are right above the m2 stand-off.

RX580 owners, have you had any issues with the GPU so far?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 10:58 AM PDT

I'm planning on getting a RX580 soon and wanted to know if there were any compelling issues that you guys might have had with the GPU? For the most part I think its a strong GPU especially for its price but I read through some amazon reviews that their GPU stopped working within the 3 month range? Not sure what happened but I thought I ask this subreddit

Returning the 5700 XT. Used 1080 ti, new 2060, or just shell the extra for 2070?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:40 PM PDT

After a crushing three days of tweaking with the 5700 XT, it's time to move on past the black screens.

For alternatives, what would you consider a good choice in the $400 to $500 range?

I was weighing the 1080 ti, 2060, and maybe the 2070. Help me choose please!

Bought used PC, ready to upgrade and need advice.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:20 PM PDT

Bought a used PC on a whim. I know very little about it and building computer in general. I plan on using youtube to help with this upgrade. To the best of my knowledge, this is my build.

    GPU- GTX 1050 ti

    16GB ram

    AMD Ryzen 5 1500x

    MSI B350M Gaming pro

I am looking for more consistent FPS and more frames in competitive shooters and racing games. I would like to take advantage of using a 240hz monitor as well with these upgrades, 144hz at a minimum. I will be playing iRacing, Fortnite, COD and GTA for the most part. Just looking for a bit of guidance.

Help - What's happening to the parts?

    Posted: 02 May 2020 09:18 AM PDT

Last week I pulled the trigger on a gaming pc build. PSU's were disappearning during shopping from my pcpartpicker list. RAM is also disappearing as I forgot to get it and went back yesterday. There's only one PSU in my town now at 400w (barf). I saw the PSU's go from in stock to out of stock with refreshing the pages. Now there's a limit on volume purchases on Newegg and backorder lists a mile long on Amazon.

If anyone knows I will be grateful as my curiosity is peaked.

    Yellow tint on monitor.

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:39 PM PDT

I'm using hdmi to connect my monitor to my newly built PC, since I have a really old monitor that doesn't have DisplayPort. My GPU is a GeForce RTX 2070 Super, and my monitor always has a yellowish tint when it's connected to this PC (This never happened with my old PC, same cable and monitor). I looked it up and tried every solution I saw and none of them worked. However, the method from this video worked when I first used it, and got rid of the tint. But whenever I launch a fullscreen game, the tint comes back. Has anyone dealt with something similar?

Ram Upgrade Failure, possible dead mob ram slot

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:34 PM PDT

Hey Everyone, I'm having an issue I've never had in the past when it came to upgrading ram in computers, etc. I've just about searched every corner of the internet and I can't seem to find a solution.

About 3 years ago I built a custom PC with the following specs:

    Motherboard: Asus H81M-K

    CPU: Intel i5 4460

    Memory RipJaws DDR3 (F3-12800CL10S-8GBXL)

GPU: (Added later) GeForce GTX 1050 TI

PSU: Roswell (something or other, if I can get the model number if needed, 500 watts)

Since then I've only done minor upgrades such as replacing my HDD with 2 SSD's, the GPU, and most recently an additional 8GB of ram.

When I first put this computer together I accidentally put the ram in the B1 slot and the computer won't post, I didn't think anything of it and put it in the A1 slot and it booted just fine. I recently bought another RipJaw 8GB stick to max my system out at 16 GB, Everything on the stick matches exactly with the older stick and for some reason when I populate both ram slots (This board only has 2) the computer just sits there and the fans just run endlessly without posting. I tried the new stick individually in the A1 slot, no issues. So I thought maybe there is some kind of difference between the older stick and the newer one I'm not seeing, so I bought yet again, another stick from the same seller. Tried the 2 new sticks and still, no post. Then I tried just populating the B1 slot like I did when I built the computer, no post. I kind of wish I paid more attention to this when I first built the computer and sent the motherboard back because now I think the slot is faulty.

I've tried everything I can think of: Resetting the BIOS settings by taking out the CMOS battery Trying all the sticks individually Disabling XMP (To be 100% honest I'm not sure what that is Haha) Reseating the CPU, looking for bent pins

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it! There are a lot of settings in the BIOS for the RAM that maybe need to be configured that I just am not aware of, I'm not very technical when it comes to RAM speeds and it's configuration.

    Thank you, in advance!

PC turns on and off but doesn’t boor

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:33 PM PDT

    Hi,

I just built this system together: Gigabyte b75m-d3v Intel i5-3570 16 gb ram RX 580 4 gb 64 gb ssd and 1 tb hdd CM m2 silent pro 620w Antec nx100

The system starts up, beeps a lot of times (~20 times) and repeats this until I turn the psu off. I have tried swapping the ram sticks and running with only one, I tested the psu seperately and it worked. Right now I went barebone with only the cpu and ram but the problem is still there. Can somebody please help me?

New GPU Fan speed stuck at 20 in afterburner

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:13 PM PDT

I recently upgraded my GPU from a radeon RX 570 to a Radeon RX 5700 xt, and an issue I've noticed is that the GPU fan speed consistently remains at 20, and doesn't appear to change when I make changes to the user defined settings.

Is there something wrong with the GPU? Or is it a case of drivers?

    Suggestions on a monitor...

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:13 PM PDT

I currently am looking to upgrade my monitor. I believe I will be getting a g-sync monitor, however I am wanting to know which brand of monitor I should get. I have the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super. My current monitor is the BenQ Zowie RL2755 (only 60hz from my console days) and I would like to take full advantage of my gpu.

Price range doesn't really matter as I have been saving for awhile and the wife is willing to chip in on what I don't have.

    Booting Problems

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:13 PM PDT

My PC has been booting into BIOS setup on and off for almost 3 months usually I can hit save and quit and it has no issues but, now I can't get it to stop going into it at all. Then all of a sudden it changed the booting sequence to IPV6 first instead of IPV4 and it starts booting and then the screen just goes black. It is still lit as if it trying to boot but and my PC sounds as if it's trying but nothing happens. I do move around with my tower quite often could this be a hardware issue from me moving it?

I have a confession to make

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:02 PM PDT

After building 3 custom PC's and being into custom computing for 10 years. I just now after re-reading my Motherboard manual realized that after the computer completes POST and boot, the motherboard LED debug status indicator displays the CPU temperature.

It is probably something incredibly obvious I should have known. However, I always thought it only displayed computer status codes.

Anyway I am unashamedly admitting I did a dumb dumb, now I know and will always appreciate the little guy. Who needs a nearly $300 Kraken Z73 to see a digital CPU temp display on your motherboard, eat your heart out NZXT!

I am being informed that this is specific to certain motherboards. I feel like less of a Dumb Dumb now.

If you want this feature I can confirm it does appear on my MSI X99 Godlike Gaming

    Edit:

I have checked the latest MSI Godlike Gaming models, it appears the Z370 Godlike and Z390 Godlike have it but the X570 does not.

It may be specific to MSI Godlike Gaming Intel Mobo's

I overclocked my CPU last night, then returned it to stock. Now I'm getting stutter every 1-4 seconds

    Posted: 02 May 2020 02:10 PM PDT

    Hi, thank you

    • 4690k - to 3.9Ghz - 1.29v - in MSI BIOS

    • using an H50 AIO, which I seated maybe 2 years ago

    • cleaned 1 month ago, 3 Noctua fans - idle mobo temp 42C GPU temp 39C (GTX 970)

    • basic MSI Z97 PCMate

    • max CPU temp in Time Spy went from 53C (stock) to 83C, so I reverted to stock (I think) and went to bed

This morning my cursor, or video (YouTube) stutters every 1-4 seconds.

    I have experienced this before!

    • I had originally OCed about 1 year ago

    • the stutter started not immediately, but maybe months later

    • it wasn't consistent, would go on for a week or two then disappear for a week or two

    • I didn't know what it was from, but I eventually reverted the OC to stock

    • sometime after, not immediately, the stutter stopped

It now clearly seems that my original stutter experience last year was related to the OC

    What's happening here?

What can I do about it?

Thanks a million. I love my computer and want it to be happy.
