    Simple Questions - May 01, 2020

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:15 AM PDT

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

I just wanna tell you guys im so happy it feels like i have bought my first car and built it with legos.

Big thanks to everyone! This subreddit is amazing

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:39 AM PDT

This post isn't a question, sorry if that is frowned upon but I just wanted something off of my chest about this community.

I recently build my very first own pc (at age 19) with the help of a friend of mine and this subreddit. Deciding to build your own pc without any real knowledge (besides what components you need lol) is incredibly scary, at least for me it was. Although it isn't the most expensive pc it is quite the investment to make in one go. You have no clue what can go wrong, what you should do IF something goes wrong and whether you messed it up completely or if you can fix it by making one small adjustment.

Luckily the first boot-up went perfect and I've been enjoying every second of playing on the pc. I did notice that it would be beneficial to upgrade from 8gb ram to 16gb. Although the internet offers a lot of help and solutions it sometimes looks like a foreign language when reading all sorts of tips and actions you can undertake.
Thankfullu someone from the discord was willing to help me install these additional 2 ram sticks by walking me through the process via DM's (I went from 2 sticks of 4gb each to 4 sticks of 4gb each, exact same model etc).
I understand it wasn't that difficult to do this upgrade but I am immensely thankfull to this subreddit and everyone in it for helping eachother without wanting anything in return (I offered to deposit some money through paypal but he kindly refused). And I get that some might think "wow really, you were afraid to mess anything up when installing extra ram...", but once again; EVERYTHING SEEMS SCARY AND INCREDIBLE DIFFICULT WHEN YOU ARE COMPLETELY NEW TO THIS.

    So:
Thank you to everyone on and in this subreddit for making it -somewhat- easy to join the pleasure of building your own pc :)

    TL;DR

This subreddit is amazing and thanks for being here lmao.

Usual pricedrops in run-up to new generation

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:25 AM PDT

So I'm at a bit of a dilemma here. I've been planning to build a pc for a while and have been saving up like a good little boy. I'll have the money for my build by June (lookin at R5 3600 + Rx 5700 xt, around € 1100).

I don't necessarily mind not getting on the new gen, as long as I get good prices on the current gen.

When do the big price drops for current gen parts usually start? At launch of new products or in the months leading up to them? In other words: if I buy my parts now, what risk do I run that I'll overpay by buying just before the discount?

Alternatively, should I just suck it up and wait until september for Zen 3 and possibly Ampère GPU's?

Need Ideas... Things to make a PC case out of (funny/strange/nifty)?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 12:45 PM PDT

I need ideas for a (preferably) small PC case. By ideas I just mean items I can use to make a PC case in. (i.e a large suitcase or minifridge; stuff like that).

I don't know why I just can't think of any but I know there are some things that would be either useful or hilarious to have a PC case in

(oh yeah and I'm using an APU, so no GPU space need.) and im using a small cooler

Avoid buyers remorse. Take your time considering you build.

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:58 AM PDT

If you are going to help someone or build it for them have a conversation at the beginning to lay out realistic expectations and a timeline. Pick your parts based on what price/performance works best for you and right down the reason you picked it. If you are buying for asthenics be honest with yourself. I can't believe this just happened. I just finished taking apart a beautiful build and he is taking it all back to microcenter as we speak. I did everything I could to talk him through it and try to slow him down but he asked if he could pay me to put it together for him and he went and got the parts at microcenter the next day. He didn't care about the performance he only cared about the RGB. I can't imagine returning hardware under normal circumstances but right now!? Seriously?

Please review my first PC Build :)

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:09 PM PDT

    Greetings all,

This is my first time ever building a PC, and I have no idea what I'm doing :) I kinda copied this Glorious AMD Build Guide and downgraded it a bit to get closer to $2,000.

    Here's my build: PCPartPicker List

Does it look OK? Do I need any other parts (extra fans, radiators, etc)? Total noob here :)

    My Goals:

    • Run any game smoothly at 1440 w/ high settings
    • Do some modest video editing
    • Open like a billion tabs in Chrome
    • Leave room for upgrading, playing new games when they come out (future-proofing)
    • Probably NOT streaming

    Thanks!

    My GTX 1080 is Fried

    Posted: 01 May 2020 01:21 PM PDT

So I was working from home, and my computer popped, went dark, and started smoking. After unplugging it and my initial freak out, I took the side of the case off and checked it out. I'm like 90% sure it was my 1080 since it smelled of smoke and had some charred plastic silicon near the edge of the board. So what now?

I was still on the clock, so I took the GPU out and reran my display cables to the motherboard so I could finish the day. Everything seems to be working fine currently. Is there anything I need to do to make sure nothing else is wrong?

Also, I know I need a GPU at this point, so are there any sensible upgrade options? Conveniently, my birthday is in less than a week, so I've got a 10% coupon at Best Buy as well as a gift card, so I'll probably order a new GPU. After looking through their website, they don't have too large of a selection, but I'm leaning towards a 2080S. Are any of the models better than the others? If not, I'll probably just go with the Nvidia reference card since it's the cheaper option.

    Edit: Forgot my build: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/k3syRk

Hi guys, thanks for trying to help!! First time trying to build a pc alone but here goes

    Specs

    AsRock Z390 Pro4 9600k Zotac 1660ti amp Gskill value 2x8 2666

I've been plugging all cables in and out all day and the thing is I can't seem to turn it on, the fans run, the gpu and cpu cooler have residual heat when I remove it from the psu to troubleshoot. The indicator light of the power button is working, I just can't seem to find out what's wrong.

    [First Build] Superman

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:54 PM PDT

Hey all, this is my first build ever! I was shooting for a build around $2k. My main use is to play racing sims like iRacing and ACC.

    https://imgur.com/a/ZTgsFUJ

    Parts:

    Ryzen 7 3700x

    Corsair H100i CPU Cooler

Asus ROG Strix X570-E Gaming Mobo

    Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16gb

    Samsung 970 Evo 500gb NVME

    Seagate Barracuda Compute 2TB

    Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 Super

    Lian Li PC-O11 Dynamic ATX

    Corsair RM 750w

    Corsair LL120RGB Fans

Overall, really pleased with how it turned out. System is quiet enough and temps are good too. I've seen other Lian Li builds here with 9 fans, but for what I'm doing 6 is doing just fine for now. Next update would probably be some custom cables.

Superman guy is mainly there to hold up the GPU as it was sagging a bit :)

New build suddenly crashed and wont boot?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:55 PM PDT

Hi, I posted here earlier waiting for RAM to come in and not posting. RAM came in fine, I used the computer for a day, updated drivers for the os (no bios update) and when I went to get back into it later today the cpu light was on and it went through a continuous loop until I powered it off. No lights are flashing on the motherboard currently and I've removed all components except the CPU itself. Reinserted all power connectors, removed and replaced CMOS battery, and removed and replaced all other components. I have a msi x570 gaming pro carbon wifi motherboard, and ryzen 3900x cpu. I turned the LEDs off the components but I can tell all parts are getting power. Here is my setup, except i ended up using a be quiet! Straight power 11 650w gold. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/Y6tN27 I am at my wits end here, can anyone suggest something I haven't tried? I'm going to remove the heatsink and cpu and replace thermal paste in the meantime.

Should I swap out my power supply?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:06 PM PDT

I used the Newegg power supply calculator and bought an EVGA Bronze 450 Watt PSU which was 50 watts over the estimated wattage because I watched a Linus Tech Tips video saying that you should not get a power supply that is too strong for your wattage. Today my friends have been telling me that I should swap PSU because it could fry my parts. Should I? (I'm a first time builder)

I built a pc a few weeks ago and I'm pulling my hair out here. Crashes crashes crashes.

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 04:30 PM PDT

    Specs: Win 10 64

Amd Ryzen 7 3700x at stock speeds

    32 gb lpx(4x8) ddr4-2666 at stock speeds

Samsung 970 Evo plus 55gb nvme drive

Msi B450 Tomahawk max atx am4 Motherboard

Nvidia Geforce gtx 1070 Refrence model

Corsair txm gold 650W 80+ gold

    samsung 840 ssd

    WD black 2tb mechanical drive

Enermax ETS-T50 AXE ARGB 71.32 cfm cpu cooler

The problem: Random pc crashes while gaming, and sometimes while idling or in sleep mode. No bluescreen or any error report after rebooting. Just screen goes black and the bios fires up and it restarts. This happens 2-5 times a day and I have tried many things like...

    Memory diagnostic tools

    Ccleaner registry cleaner

    Driver uninstalling and reinstalling

monitoring temperatures while cranking games to the max.

I will post some screens that might help but I am so lost and fiddling with bios is something i'm not too sure of myself on unless I get a second opinion.

I'll post some screens in the comment and maybe they will help?

How likely is it to get a faulty psu?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 02:48 PM PDT

Just built a new pc and spent all night trying to figure out why it turned off after post and won't post anymore. Then in the morning tried my old psu and it turned on fine, I even had to turn it off with the power button. Has this happened to anyone else? If so did it work when you returned and bought a new psu?

Old build doesn't display to monitors (except one time?)

    Posted: 01 May 2020 04:54 PM PDT

I'm booting up an old build with the intention of turning it into a streaming PC (and also just because I want to make sure it still works), and I'm having issues getting it to display anything to the monitors.

On boot, the display shows nothing, but the PC otherwise acts like normal, all case, CPU, and GPU fans are spinning. This morning I was able to get it to boot fully, with the display working, and after going through the BIOS screen for a moment, it loaded normally (I tried a few times yesterday and was unsuccessful). During that run, the whole PC froze and since then I have been unable to get it to boot again.

    I have tried the following:

    • waiting up to 1 hour after reboot just to see if it's being dumb for no reason
    • swapped every cable involved, PC and Monitor power, DVI cable. These are all known good cables and parts
    • tried identical monitor that I also know is functional
    • slapped in my Founders Edition 1080 (in a different PCIe slot no less)
    • Reseated PSU -> mobo/GPU cables, also reseated RAM and reseated GPU

And still no display output. This PC was recently packed and shipped as I moved to a different state, is it possible something was damaged during shipping? The single successful boot makes me doubt that but I wouldn't rule it entirely out.

    Build is here: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/TQNqpb

Ignore prices and links obviously, since I already have this PC
