WD Ultrastar vs WD Red... why pay more for Red when Ultrastar is cheaper and better?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 03:15 PM PDT

I upgraded to the WD Ultrastar product line from WD Red for my NAS... can't figure out why the Retail packaging of WD Ultrastar is priced lower than the WD RED while all the specs are better. Thoughts?

What makes specialized silicon better at particular tasks than more general silicon?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 05:19 PM PDT

For example, why are RT cores better at doing BVH transversal than a regular cuda core? Or what makes an ASIC better than a GPU at say crypto mining.

Going from CPU to GPU makes sense to me, since the GPU has thousands of "cores" that do a lot more things in parallel. And yes I'm aware that calling them cores isn't really correct though I'm still not sure why.

Intel recommended prices for 10th Gen mobile H-series CPUs are online in ARK

    Posted: 09 Apr 2020 09:31 AM PDT

I made a quick comparison of Intel 10th Gen mobile H-series CPUs after I saw they were published on Ark. It's recommended customer prices, so they will be negotiated heavily over, but they may give some indication.

    Comparison: https://i.imgur.com/9N8M1iy.png

The only major difference was a drop in de recommended price from $556 for the i9-9880H to $450 for the i7-10875H, which are basically the same processor. This makes 8-core CPUs somewhat more accessible, but most rigs will probably stay with the 6-core i7-10750H and i7-10850H.

All other difference are just minor changes in clock speeds.

I believe AMD is positioning its AMD Ryzen 7 4800H straight against the i7-10750H, the i7-x750H model was very popular in the 8th and 9th gen laptops. With 2 more cores and 4 more threads, a more powerful GPU and higher power efficiency these laptops should be killing it price performance wise.
