High Idle Temperature and strange temperature behavior

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:18 AM PDT

Some days ago i build a nice little build and had awesome low temperatures ~40°C.Today i thought my pc was a bit loud so i had a look into my Dashboard so i had a look into my dashboard.

The Temperature of my ryzen 3800x spikes periodically to ~60°C falls then slowly to ~49°C and then spikes again all of that while only surfing the internet. In the bios the cpu temp shows a constant 61°C which i find quiet high.

i cannot find a reason why those temps behave like this >.< can someone help.low and 1 sec later

    video

Edit: Panicked because i don't have any experience with ryzen. It is a normal behavior. Some good in depth explanations are bellow. Thank you all.

Mounted new CPU cooler, now PC doesn't boot into bios, poweroff does not kick in

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:42 PM PDT

Today I mounted my new thermaltake riing silent 12 rgb edition cooler, replacing my wraith prism that came with my 3700x. After process, my system does not boot. Here are my specs

Cpu: 3700x Gpu: red devil 5700xt Boot drive: 970 evo plus 250gb Motherboard: Asus Prime x470-Pro Ram: 3200 MHz Corsair Vengence 2x8gb PSU: bequiet Pure Power 10 (2017) 500 W still from previous build Other drives: two sata ssds, two hdds Fans, 1 nzxt h510 stock fan, 1 noctua industrial 2000 rpm ipc

What is happening: Regardless of what I have for now attempted I will not get visuals, my Mouse will blink on and go off, my Keyboard stay off, external hdd gets power, fans at high percent utilisation. Cpu is not running hot as far as I can tell, GPU doesn't bother to turn on fans (which is normal in idle), power button led is off, rgb of Motherboard, gpu (and old cooler) work as always.

    What I have tried:

    • Remounting the Cooler
    • Removing the GPU
    • Disconnecting the new CPU fan and rgb header
    • Reconnecting the old cpu fan and rgb header
    • Reseating RAM
    • Trying a different RAM slot with just one module (2x)
    • Reassuring that CPU power connectors are seated
    • Reassuring the ATX power connectors are seated
    • Reseating the GPU
    • No RAM
    • Look for bent pins on cpu

    What I will try:

    • CMOS removal/bios reset (not sure whether I have onboard functionality like a button)

Things I could try * No CPU * Look at power pins * Old cpu fan mounted

Things I wish I could try right now

    • Other CPU
    • other PSU
    • Other Motherboard

At this point I really fear I killedy mainboard. Other than that the PSU could also be the problem, but that's one of the parts I didn't even touch today.

New PC Shutting off after using for half an hour

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Long story short, I just finished building my custom PC (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hwx9vW) yesterday afternoon and was able to successfully install windows 10 using the USB method via Microsoft's website but now i am having issues keeping the PC running for more than half an hour. The usual sequence of events is as follows:

    1. Turn on pc, the CPU and DRAM LED's on the MOBO light up red until it gets to boot up screens
    2. Once i let it go past AsRock screen it goes to Windows 10 login
    3. Once logged in, everything appears fine. I was able to successfully able to install steam and a few other smaller apps and browse the web with not issues.
    4. After playing a game for 5-10 minutes or just idling for long enough (has occurred in a variety of scenarios so far) the screen goes black and PC just restarts itself. Right after it goes black, red LED's come of for the "Boot" and "GPU" on the MOBO just like it was for CPU and RAM in step 1.
    5. Successfully reboots once it restarts on its own, rinse and repeat.

Not sure what the issue is and the times before crashing have varied from under 10 minutes to 30-40 minutes in my 8-10 trials so far. I am sort of at a loss at this point because i am not seeing crazy temperatures (at least while i am in the NZXT performance tool) so i really do not know what to do next or tell if one of my parts is faulty.

EDIT: It looks to be a CPU heat issue (overheating) - any suggestions on what to do next?

After replacing 5 fans with Noctua A12x25 in my H700 to aim for almost silent, I forgot about/had no idea my PSU was so loud.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 06:20 AM PDT

As title says, I recently replaced all 5 fans in my H700 case with Noctua A12x25's. 3 for the front intake and 2 (with 140 adapters) on my Kraken radiator. The noise level is very improved, but now I've learned the one remaining fan in my case that is not nearly silent is driving me crazy: The fan in my Supernova 850 G3. I am thinking of replacing the G3's fan with a Noctua. 2 Questions:

I think it will make most sense to power the fan from the motherboard so that my fan controller can give a proper curve/control and monitor, but without any openings on the case, I'm expecting to need to dremel a small hole for this.

I was thinking of using the same model as it is the slimmest of the 120's and likely the same 140 adapters I used for my radiator or maybe it would make more sense to use a Noctua 140? EVGA's specs say 130mm but I heard this was a patent issue, since I believe almost every PSU tutorial on youtube I could find was 140 or 120.

    Thanks for any thoughts.

    Ryzen 3600 Temps.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 10:14 AM PDT

I've bought Ryzen 5 3600 like a month ago and while looking at the temps I was surprised because i'm hitting 45c and 61c being the max while browsing and sometimes idle. I saw that the voltage usage and its is very high It kept using 1.4500V. I did a little research and the it says that the Voltage is the suspect that's why the cpu hitting those temps. I downloaded Ryzen Master and did some thinkering.

I ran Cinebench R20 and here's my result

Stock Speed scored at 3491 // Max temps 70c // Mostly stayed at 3.9Ghz // Max Voltage Usage was 1.4500V.
    4.1GHz - Scored 3652 // Max temps 65c // I set the vcore as 1.2875v

Now my temps while browsing is 34-44c. It's a great result for me I guess because it's my first time doing this. Now my question is it fine to keep it locked at 4.1Ghz & 1.2875v all the time? (Because it helped the temps go low) i'm scared that it might damage my cpu somehow (?). I'm scared of getting bluescreened again. Happened to me last time when I tried to set it at 4.1Ghz - 1.2v. I'm satisfied at 4.1GHz but 4.2 is pretty tempting.

    Thank you!

Will Asus VG248QG be able to output 144Hz or 165Hz from my Dell G7?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:24 PM PDT

I have a Dell G7 that has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 with Max-Q GPU. I am considering purchasing a Asus VG248QG to use as a main monitor for gaming. I am wondering if my computer will be able to output either 144Hz or 165Hz to the monitor given its specs and ports.

From Dell's website, it seems my G& has the following ports:

    • Type-C™ Thunderbolt™ 3 with support for 40 Gbps Thunderbolt and DisplayPort
    • HDMI 2.0

The monitor comes with a DisplayPort cable but since my computer does not have a DisplayPort, I would need to buy an adapter for it. I am hoping to use an HDMI cable to hook up the monitor so that I can avoid buying adapters that may or may not work. If you have the link to a cable or adapter that would work, please link it for me. :)

In case you need, here are the links to the computer and monitor

How long would a R5 1600 AF last until I would need an upgrade?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:05 PM PDT

I currently am using an FX 4300 and a GTX 960 and 8 gigs of ram for my gaming and work. I play all kinds of games at 900p (my monitor is 1600 x 900, so not even 1080p) and I'm just looking for a solid 60fps at medium settings at minimum. Will the 1600 af allow me to do this? I also plan to upgrade my GPU to an rx 580 a little later on. Will the 1600 af also give me better upgrade paths for later on? What do you guys think?

Edit: I'm also buying a kit of 16gb ram at 3200 MHz, if that is useful to you guys

New Motherboard - no signs of life

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:47 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I ran into some problems last night with trying to set up my new Mobo, Ram, and CPU. After installing everything (hopefully) correctly, its giving me absolutely no feedback when I hit the power button. I've adjusted the front panel connectors too to make sure it's not those.

Honestly I'm at a loss for how to troubleshoot this. And to add to it all, my old setup is also giving me absolutely nothing either. Does that mean either my case is shorting something or my PSU is dead?

Challenge: How (cheaply) can I upgrade this 6 year old build?

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 12:47 PM PDT

CONTEXT: I've been building my own for almost 20 years, and my most recent build is almost 6 years old with a Video Card, MB, and Case/PS upgrade three years ago to fit in a new house & space. My needs have changed over the years and I'm not as focused on gaming as much. I used to research the heck out of parts and trends before my builds, but I feel like its all gotten away from me now - I didn't even know M.2 was a thing until just the other day.

CURRENT SITUATION: I'm working from home a lot (even before COVID) on my desktop and currently have two problems I want to solve. 1. By the time I get to the afternoon, my CPU is hot enough my very loud CPU fan is cycling so much it becomes a distraction. 2. Microsoft Teams needs Advanced Vector Extension 2 (AVX2) in order to support all its functionality. Everything works fine on my company laptop, but not my desktop. I don't really play games much anymore and the few I do are old and I've had no issues.

QUESTION: Base on the current build, what are my range of options? Obviously I could just go all new, but given current economic uncertainty, I'd like to go the lowest cost to get my desired outcomes.

    Thanks!

    Looking for a pc upgrade

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:26 PM PDT

I have decided that it is about time to upgrade my pc and I cant decide if I should upgrade my GPU (1060 6gb) or monitor (generic 1080p 60hz) first. I was thinking about getting a better resolution, refresh rate monitor but was also wondering how well the 1060 would handle it on games like r6. I have about $450 to spend, maybe a little more. Please help me decide, thanks!

    My $450 dollar APU system

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 03:20 PM PDT

I want to build my first pc and $450 is my budget. So after learning about the different parts, I've come up with this,

    https://pcpartpicker.com/user/jojoe2123/saved/

    APU: AMD Ryzen 5 3400G ($150)

Motherboard: ASRock B450M/ AC Micro ATX AM4

    RAM: Team T-Force VULCAN Z 16GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200

    Storage: ADATA SU635 480 GB 2.5" SSD

Case: Corsair Carbide Series 88R Micro ATX Mid Tower

PSU: EVGA BR 600 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX

The main reason I picked these components is because I want it to be upgradeable without hassle. I wanted 4 dimm slots not 2, I wanted high voltage so I can upgrade to a gpu in the future, and I also wanted a nice looking and well functioning PC.

I felt that a APU system was the best route as a cpu and gpu separately would cost more. I am not sure how many fan headers are on the mobo but I'm planning on having three fans plus the cpu cooler fan too so hopefully it has 4 :/ If there is cheaper DDR4-3200 16GB ram then let me know. I will add a hard drive later I just need to cut corners and storage isn't a huge problem for me. The tower seems nice with a cool design, I'm just not sure about the intake so if it has bad airflow let me know. And my PSU is 80+ bronze so it should be alright.

    I will take any suggestions!

    4gb vs 8gb graphics card

Looking for a cheap, but good graphics card.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 11:22 AM PDT

My friend is looking to upgrade his pc from his very old Radeon card, considering it barely manages to play something like totally accurate battle simulator without reaching 90 degrees almost instantly. He's got a budget of a little leas than $300 but wants to spend as little as he possibly can. He doesn't really play anything particularly intensive and only wants to be able to reach 60 FPS @ 1080p in moat games, he doesn't play much more than strategy games like hearts of iron, civilization or Europa universalis, and the processor absolutely is not an issue, considering it's the gpu that's throttling at the moment, while his processor is sitting quite comfortably. Another pro would absolutely be if it would be a bit more quiet, because his current one is the only thing in his machine making any considerable noise, when the fan is spinning at hard drive speeds.

Hi, I have a spare $650 and was wondering where to begin with building my first PC.

    Posted: 28 Apr 2020 02:58 PM PDT

I'd like for it to run AAA games such as Witcher 3 and Halo at moderate speeds. Would something like this be possible?
