This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

My husband has gotten really into computer gaming. I want to do something nice for his cluttered setup. Help?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:44 AM PDT

So my husband has just placed his new gaming pc right in front of my Dell.

The desk is tiny as is, between my pc stuffed behind his taking pc, along with his ps4, headset, controllers, and the shocking amount of stray writes, I feel a brain aneurysm steadily coming on from the disaster.

I've purchased a large desk (coming in the mail rn) but I really want to make the space as clean clutter free and pleasant as possible before he turns it into a full on neckbeard nest.

That being said, this isn't technically a pc build type question but more of a pc organization question. I hope that's okay!

    • I want to get led lights like I've seen on reddit, (couldn't find the pics to stalk comments and see if they explain what stuff they bought) but I think he'd get a kick out of that.

I also really want a dual mount.

I tried looking on Amazon but I always get caught up in the bad reviews section and I'm worried I'll get a crappy one and it'll break and both pcs will come crashing down, shatter and explode, house catches on fire, followed by a divorce.. you get the drift. It takes a lot for me to finalize a choice.

    That being said...

Can anyone recommend a cheap-but-durable dual pc mount that they trust?

Are there any tips or tricks to controller/headphone holders/ organization that would look cool?

Led strip kits, or are those virtually all the same?

I'll leave buying a gaming seat to him, he's the one using it most but I would love some recommendations that I can send to him. My office chair wasn't made to be used the way he using it, apparently some strange small metal bar already snapped off, I'm just waiting for the whole damn thing to fall apart at this point.

Thank you for any and all tips and suggestions you throw my way, I'm pretty much lost when it comes to this stuff!

$900 to $1050 Help would be appreciated

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:56 AM PDT

So, this is my first time building a pc and I don't have the money to go overboard and plus since it is my first one, I don't want to spend too much either.

As of right now, I have a 3200 and 2400 RAM. I was wondering if it would be better to go ahead and buy the 3200 instead of having to upgrade in the future or is the 2400 good for what I am going for?

My ideal PC would be to able to play lower end games like; Minecraft, CS:GO, Valorant, LOL but also some AAA games too. I want to be able to play those and games, stream, and edit videos.

I have a link to my list and am asking if y'all could help me lower the price but still be able to do all those things with no problem.

Here is the album. I included some pictures of my setup as well as my racing sim setup which I luckily was able to buy right before the quarantine began. Enjoy!

The only parts that are not in this list are the cablemod cables, PCI-E riser cable and the white key caps on the keyboard. One issue I've run into is having the graphics card vertically mounted in this case. The clearance between the graphics card and the side glass panel is very little which results in the glass getting really hot. The only other issue is getting my cablemod cables to bend correctly. If anyone knows how I can solve these issues, please let me know.

Old PC Build Wont Display Video/Boot, Only POST beeps when I Remove Ram

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:44 PM PDT

Hi all! I built a PC about 6 years ago, and it worked for a few years. I tried booting again this year after coming home from college, and the display wouldn't come on any more. No POST beeps, fans come on, no abnormal LED's. Here's what I've tried:

replacing CMOS battery + clear CMOS

    Reseating RAM & GPU

Booting with 1 RAM stick, trying each slot individually

    Booting without GPU/ Hard Drive/peripherals

When I try to boot without RAM, I do get POST beeps that mean there's no RAM detected. Does this mean that my mobo is fine and the problem lies in RAM, GPU, or CPU? There were no beeps when I removed GPU. I'm thinking of buying new RAM to test out. What do y'all think?

    Thanks a bunch for reading!

    Build details below:

    GPU: XFX Double D R9-280X-TDFD Radeon R9 280X 3GB 384-B

CPU: AMD FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz

    MOBO: ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+

    RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3

PSU: Thermaltake SMART Series SP-750PCBUS 750W ATX 12V

    Help! Old Motherboard Blew Up

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 10:13 PM PDT

    Hey Team

I'm in need of a bit of urgent help. My motherboard blew up yesterday and hence I'm in need of a new system. I've been searching out information on the latest deals and specs for the last 24hrs but as I go back to work next Friday (we're in lockdown here in NZ) I would quite like to get it sorted before then.

My last system was an I7 4700K in an Asus Maximus IV Impact with 16Gb RAM. This did me pretty well for day to day needs. I play games a bit, but not really the AAA titles and run a business from it, nothing too strenuous, just a few spreadsheets and web based accounting.

Budget is not really an issue (this will be a "business expense"), but I absolutely want to get the best bang for my buck. I am also looking at getting in to a bit of CAD work, but only Autocad Electrical, as well as the ability to run a few virtual machines as needed when I need to run antiquated software on an occasional basis.

Already have all the other components (M.2 ssd, GTX 980, etc) to get up and running and will upgrade as needed so really only looking for the best CPU, motherboard and RAM combo for my situation to get me up and running again.

Help me r/buildapc, you're my only hope.

P.S. I should point out, I have been looking at an I9 9900K and Asus Maximus XI Formula, that's my price range.

I'm quite a fan of Thermaltake's open air case in the P series. The p3, 5 and 90 are my favorite.

I mostly play BL3 (which is not doing too hot in my current setup) running at constant 60fps on a 1440p uw and do audio editing. Thanks!

    Bottlenecking

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:55 PM PDT

So I bought a prebuilt off of eBay from a trusted seller. The specs are i7-9700k, 1060 3GB, and 32GB DDR4 Ram. I had told my friend the build that I bought and he brought up something called bottlenecking and how that will be the downfall of this computer. Can someone explain to me what bottlenecking is and if he's right as far as it will be the downfall of this computer? And please do say anything else you feel is necessary for me to know about this build. I had contacted the seller who built this pc and he said I wouldn't have to worry about bottlenecking but just thought I should get more opinions considering I spent almost $1200 on it. Thanks :)

    Budget Gaming PC

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:49 PM PDT

    Hi all!

So, in my quarantine boredom, I'm looking to build my first PC. I want it to be a cheaper gaming PC. Not barebones y any means, but something I can afford now with the ability to upgrade for the next few years. Just looking to play current AAA titles at a stable framerate, but I'm not married to crazy fight frame rates of 4k displays obviously.

What can you guys suggest for someone, who wants to shopd on Amazon, for their first PC build that can play today's games decently?

    Thanks!

    What's the best AIO?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 11:35 AM PDT

Looking for a good AIO for an i9-9900K to overclock. Looking for a 360mm. I'm thinking $200 or less, but if I should get another one for more money, please tell me. I saw the Corsair h150i PRO and the NZXT Kraken x72 and z73(what's the difference between them?). I would prefer performance over looks, but an RGB one would be ok. I have a Phanteks p400a (Digital) case.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This isn't my first PC build but I haven't been keeping up with hardware releases recently. So I just wanted to post this build and make sure it looks OK. My main questions and concerns have to do with the motherboard. I know a B450 one would be cheaper but I don't want to have to update the BIOS for a 3rd-gen Ryzen. I have no idea whether B450s were coming largely updated yet or not. Also because this build is for a computer-illiterate boomer who's used to laptops I wanted to have built-in WiFi and bluetooth to avoid any future hassles for him.

Additionally, I'm not well-versed on workstation builds as all my previous ones have been for gaming. I figured the Ryzen 5 3600 would do well enough at rendering and the like but any other opinions on whether I should go higher to Ryzen 7 or not would be appreciated.

So i was wondering what the optimal airflow and position of the fans in my meshify c would be. Can you guys help me?

So a fellow redditor at /amdhelp told me to install 2 140mm upfront intake, 2 140mm up top intake and 1 stock meshify c as exhaust in the rear. I just wanted more insights.

So just to be clear i have the 5 pack 140mm arctic and the 2 120mm stock case fan. I can only install 4 140mm in this case. Parts list is down below.

So in combination with my cpu tower cooler: arctic esports 34 duo which faces 2 ways, my gpu: rx 5700 xt sapphire pulse which has 2 fans facing down and my PSU: Seasonic gx-650 also facing down against the opening with a dust filter bottom, up top dust filter and the mesh dust filter in the front this all shouldnt be a problem with the recommendation above?

    Help is much appreciated!

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 01:29 PM PDT

I've always wanted to build a pc for the longest time but always scared I would mess it up somehow. I put a little list together and would love if you guys could tell me if it's okay and improvements that could be made. I definitely want a cheaper case and a cheaper graphics card so would love a recommendations on that. I'm trying to make the pc for under $700 USD. Thanks bois. Here's the partpicker list:
