    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Homeless in January to buying my first PC part this week.

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 09:00 AM PDT

Getting my life back together and doing something I've always dreamed of doing - building a PC for gaming and video editing.

    Here's my plan:

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dzGRMc

I just bought the fan this week and received it yesterday! I put that on there so I could have something to at least start. Now that I have my "first part," (I know it's pathetic, just a fan) I'm saving for the next most expensive part - the PSU. I figured if I just start and focus on getting one component at a time I can build this thing over 6 months or so.

Any help and advice would be extremely appreciated. I don't know too much but I've been trying to learn.

Edit: It was pointed out quickly how dumb it would be to buy parts as I go. This is true. My thought was that buying them slowly and in pieces would help keep my motivation high as I got new parts and also to help spread the cost out, so I'm not going full tard buying it when I have been in a fragile money space. At this point I have a job and all my expenses covered with a few hundred dollars a month left over so I feel like I can start going towards something like this, just slowly. I'll just start a money fund and save the whole cost though as has been suggested.

I had a defective fan on my GPU for over 5 years, and I just found out today.

    Posted: 10 Apr 2020 06:30 PM PDT

I'm just laughing about all of this. Sometimes, you can't know something is wrong until you learn otherwise.

I got a base two-fan Zotac 970 for Christmas in 2014. Performance wise, I was ecstatic, and I could talk for ages about how this GPU has helped me keep on gaming despite not being able to afford an upgrade for the last 4 years. But one thing that always bugged me about this GPU was the fan noise.

No matter what I did, this GPU got hot. It wasn't surprising since this was probably the cheapest 970 on the market at the time, and I expected it to have inferior cooling compared to some of the more robust GPUs at the time. But the fans were unusually loud.

When a game was utilizing the full potential of the GPU, and temps got hot, the fan got LOUD. Not even at 90-100%. The noise was noticeable at speeds as low as 65%. Again, I chalked it up to the cheap cooler and went about my life. Occasionally, I would replace the thermal paste and clean it out, but that was it.

About a few days ago, a fan started squeaking in my case. It sounded like a mouse was screaming misery every 5 seconds. Eventually, the noise went away, but something I noticed while diagnosing it: one of my GPU fans was REALLY struggling to spin (coincidentally, it was the one squeaking all the time). It would spin for 3 seconds, stop for 3 seconds, spin for 3 seconds... Obviously, I was concerned, but I googled the issue and many forums said that GPUs sometime turn off fans during periods with low usage. I wasn't convinced, but I continued to game.

Yesterday, the squeaking came back worse than ever, and I got fed up. I ripped out the GPU, took out the bad fan, and ziptied an old CPU fan to my GPU (thanks LinusTechTips for the idea), just to see what would happen.

    I honestly was shocked:

    • Temperature performance improved, from 82C to 78 72C at load (it dropped more after I tuned the CPU fan)
    • Noise went way down. Even if I'm running both fans at 100%, it's probably 75% quieter than before.
    • The awkward fan spin up noise at boot is gone. I was actually concerned my PC wasn't booting when I pressed the power button

I just thought this would be a fun story to share. I'll pay attention to fan noise next time I can afford a GPU haha.

Edit: well I forgot to look at this post, and it looks like I missed a bir!

    • A quick answer to everyone's question: yes, the GPU is dusty. The funny thing is, I just replaced thermal paste like 2 months ago and removed all the dust when I did. It's back. I live in a dusty place with a old case. When the fan died, I planned on cleaning out the dust after the new GPU fan arrived. But now this is working, I may just keep it and clean it
    • GPU temps actually improved once I tuned the fan. It's now idling at 37C (from 42C), and 72C at full load.

Don't be a dumbass like me. Remember to tighten your cooler's screws. Here's my cautionary tale

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 03:50 AM PDT

6 months ago, I upgraded my PC with a 9900K and a Kraken X72 cooler. It posted fine and worked with no noticeable issues apart from the fairly high idle temps which reached 40-45C.

I spent months troubleshooting the issue, I figured it could be fans, then a pump failure then a defective unit. Nothing pointed to the problem and I was on the verge of an RMA, but due to COVID-19 I thought against it.

When I run an Aida 64 stress test, it immediately shoots to 110C and start thermal throttling up to 25%.

But yesterday, I figured maybe the pump isn't tightened, I reached inside to try to turn one of the screws and it just started turning with no resistance ! That's when I realized what a dumbass I was 6 months ago when I put the pump in place and forgot to tighten it. All 4 screws were very loose, and I mean a couple turns outwards and the pump would fall off, there was barely any contact between the pump and the CPU.

I immediately ran an Aida 64 test and it went from 110C to 75C average.

    Remember folks, tighten your screws.

    Expansion slots

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 11:06 AM PDT

I currently own a Asus M32 and since we are in quarantine, I want to take the time to see if I can improve my pc without buying a whole new computer.

On the website ( https://www.asus.com/ca-en/Tower-PCs/M32AD/specifications/ ) I notice that there are slots on the mother board that I can improve on:

    Expansion Slots

    1 x PCI-e x 1
    1 x PCI-e x 16
    1 x mini PCI-e

can anyone explain what I can do with this information? Can I add more usb slots with this or any other improvements (sorry I am pretty noob haha)

    Thanks!

    RX 580 versus the GTX 1660 non-ti?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 06:53 AM PDT

Planning a build with the Ryzen 2600, was planning to purchase the RX 580 for £200 because I want a warranty but saw that the MSI GTX 1660 non-ti Armor OC is also £200. I went on YouTube to look at benchmarks for Ryzen 2600 + GTX 1660 for a few games and found barely any compared to benchmark videos with the RX 580 + Ryzen 2600.

Had my heart set on the RX 580 from all the good things I had heard but if the GTX 1660 is the better option then I'll go with that, another thing is I can't find much about this version mostly finding stuff about the Gaming X 1660.

Seems as if this RX 580 has more people using it and benchmarking with it. I'm playing at 1920x1080.

    Thoughts?

First time builder - believe it's ready, but looking for improvements/suggestion!

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 11:44 AM PDT

    PCPartPicker Part List

Hey all, this is my first time building a PC. I'm not too savvy when it comes to things like this, so I've gotten to this point with the help of some friends. Figured I'd post here as well for any additional suggestions/improvements.

For the most part, I intend for this build to be used for gaming, but I also do a lot of video editing if that's important. As far as graphics go, I'd like to be on the higher end of things but does not have to be ultra or the best settings. 1920x1080 resolution or better. 60+ fps . Current monitor I'm looking at is a used 144hz monitor but may consider something else.

I'd like to stay under ~$1,200 if possible but am willing to spend more than that if it's for something that'll better fit my needs. For my parts, I am located and purchasing in the US.

Really hoping to make my build as efficient as possible and hoping for something that'll last me years. Goes without saying, but want the best bang for my buck!

    Thanks!

After saving up for some time I finally want to build a "black-silver-white" gaming/productivity pc any feedback?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 12:48 PM PDT

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/fR8kRk

Note: I know a some parts seem more expensive these days, but in my home country there is a big sale going on PC parts and this is just a good time to build a new pc!

I don't need THAT much performance: I know I could fit either a 3900x or a 2080Ti in my budget, but I would prefer part quality and good looks over speed. I would love some feedback. I'm going for a silver/steel themed pc!

Help! Green Light on motherboard, no Boot.

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 01:23 PM PDT

Hello, Hoping for some help! First time builder. Completed build (parts list below) and connected to monitor via HMDI on the GPU. When powered on the motherboard cycles through the LED lights for DRAM, CPU, VGA, and BOOT. Green light for BOOT stays on. ASUS load screen shows on monitor with "Please press DEL or F2 to enter UEIF BIOS setting" however DEL and F2 do not open BIOS (using wired Keyboard).

Things I have already attempted: 1) booted up with no RAM sticks. Then Booted up with 1 RAM Stick. Result was same.

    2) Checked all power connections to all components.

    3) booted up without GPU installed, powered off, installed GPU and powered on, same result.

To my knowledge everything has been installed and is connected appropriately. Anything suggestions or help is much appreciated!

First build in 10 years - looking for a 1440p 144hz machine on a bit of a budget

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 09:20 AM PDT

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

1440p gaming (ideally 144hz) and VR.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around $1000

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please)

Here is what I have in mind currently: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/7eigen/saved/2f8z7P

I was thinking of getting a Ryzen 1600 AF instead of the 3600 to save $90, but I'm worried about the performance hit I'd take. I'm also willing to potentially drop to a non-super 2070 (or a super 2060), but I don't see any good deals currently available. I am not interested in a 5700 XT.

Looking for overall thoughts on the build, thanks!

With the new consoles having 8 core / 16 thread CPUs, do you agree with some of the advice that it may be more prudent to buy an 8 core CPU for future games?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 12:52 AM PDT

So, we all know that the 3600 is currently the best bang for buck chip right now. But I'm seeing many people recommend that it's more prudent to get a 8 core chip like the 3700 due to the new consoles being 8 core / 16 thread.

Their reasoning is that now that console devs will be making games for 8 core CPUs, all games will start to utilize the extra power.

My only problem with this is that even in games that are PC only, that were only ever developed by devs for specifically PC - don't show much improvement over between 3600/3700.

Games like Anno, Total war etc.

Surely if this reasoning was true, the games designed only for PC would be showing some sort of tangable improvement between 4/6/8 core CPUs?

In my younger days I fell into the trap of buying for 'future proofing' and none of it ever came true, or I ended up upgrading anyway before any of it came to fruition.

Frame rate drops making games unplayable since upgrading to 3900x

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 02:10 PM PDT

Hi guys, I recently upgraded from a 6600k to a 3900x. I did a full clean install of windows, updated every driver I can, and more and I am still getting game crippling frame rate drops. My GPU is not throttling or hitting even close to 100%.

I have the power plan set to AMD high performance, using PBO, ram is set to 3600mhz via XMP, temperatures are in check, updated the bios and chipset and all other drivers.

This was not an issue I had with my 6600k, although it is similar. The reason I upgraded is because my CPU was at 100% playing many games like modern warfare and would cause frame rate skipping. Now I don't get that all the time but the frames eventually drop severely and get stuck around 4fps. I wonder if something is causing games to not use multiple cores?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Regarding cooling a 2070 Super with an AIO

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 01:59 PM PDT

    1) What temps should I expect when watercooling the gpu with

    a) 120mm aio OR b) 240mm aio

    2) I wish to keep it at 60c or below under gaming-load. (runs at around 75c with an aggressive fan curve and sound like jet engine, can reach 80c with a more gentle fan curve but still loud)

    3) Can I buy an aio from any brand or do I need to get NZXT aios specifically?

    4) Which header should I use for the pump and fans (for the rad and vram fan)?

    Optical Drive Question

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 01:51 PM PDT

I'm building a PC for the first time, but I've collected many PC games over the last few years that come in cd/dvd format. However, recently most games are on Steam or other gaming store online, but I don't want to rebuy games I already own, specially if I can't put their respective game key on Steam.

Should I install an optical drive on my new computer, or is there an alternative to it? Thank y'all in advance.

Outdated gpu fan broke and decided to upgrade parts. Would this be compatible or even functional?

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 01:48 PM PDT

Recently had a fan go out in my gpu and ended up getting an amd rx580 8gb along with a 600w psu.

Problem is that my cpu and motherboard are outdated and won't go past the splash bios and boot screen. Apparently my intel dp55wb motherboard wont acknowledge it despite hours of research and trying to work around it.

I got on bestbuy and looked for the lowest price cpu and motherboard.

So my question is would a Ryzen 3 3200G Quad-Core 3.6 GHz Socket AM4 Desktop Processor and a MSI - B450 TOMAHAWK MAX (Socket AM4) USB-C Gen2 AMD Motherboard operate with an amd rx 580 and EVGA 600 psu or even be a problem considering different brand parts?

    $700 Video Editing PC Help

    Posted: 11 Apr 2020 01:48 PM PDT

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

I am wanting to build a starter work station build that I can edit video for my job. I also would like to be able to do some gaming on it (primarily Triple A FPS games). I do most of my work in Adobe Create suites, mostly 1080p sports video footage. I want this build to be a starting point that I can upgrade in the future, but will get me up on my feet in the meantime.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I am used to gaming on a console, so honestly anything above that is a huge plus.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

I am really wanting to stay at $700 if possible.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    USA

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Hi building a new pc and stuck with what gpu i should buy. I have a ryzen 1700x and a 1080p monitor so 1080p is what i will play. Id like a card that i can use for a good few years. The 580 is cheaper but has more vram so im not sure which of these to buy, or is there any other card that i could buy that will fit my needs? Will the extra ram matter in years to come? Or will the performance itself matter

I'm building my PC purely for gaming, however if I decide to open discord and 5-15 chrome tabs while playing, I don't want to experience any sort of lag/stuttering.

I need to know a few things before deciding:

    1) Since everyone is talking about how i5 9600k stutters in games, I need to know how severe this really is? Is it just a few unique games, or is it a bunch of games?

    2) Does r5 3600 have just a tiny bit less stuttering than i5 9600k, or NO stuttering at all?

    3) If both of these CPU's have similar issues, which other CPU would you recommend that's in similar price range?

It's important to mention that I play a lot of CSGO, and I also have 240hz monitor, so I really need to have high FPS which preferably never dips below 240. I noticed that 3600 dips below 200fps quite frequently, while 9600k, especially OC-ed to 5ghz, almost never dips below 240fps.

But even then... I would rather have 100% fluid gameplay with a bit less FPS, than stuttery one with a bit higher FPS.
