Parents won’t let me build a PC. Please convince them.

    Posted: 05 Apr 2020 06:03 PM PDT

My parents want me to go for a prebuilt, I've told them the downsides and they don't understand how much better building one yourself is. Please try to convince them.

    https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/CCpt4n

To the people who I said it was worth 1000, I meant for the monitor and the PC. Just clearing that up.

Their 1st argument: My uncle used to build PCs around 15 years ago, before the times of PcPartPicker, YT, and a Reddit, meaning it was harder to build PCs and easier to mess up. He says that it isn't worth the stress and time, so I should go for a prebuilt.

My argument is: about the stress and time that he mentions. The stress he is mentioning is finding the right components and knowing if they fit together, which I've done. And the time, he's talking about learning how to build it, because he built before YT and all the resources we have today. He thinks I need to be TAUGHT to build PCs, by a person as he would've 15 years ago. So he thinks I need to get taught by someone, even though there's all the resources online.

2nd argument: my parents say 'I've looked online, and it is very hard'.

My argument to that is: from what I've heard from people on Reddit, YT, IRL etc. it is very easy to build PCs. My friend built a 2.5k build without any problems.

Another thing to mention, they're not very techy people. They don't see the difference between their 2016 iMac with 1800mhz DDR3, and a good PC like mine. They don't care about speed of the PC or anything, 'a PC is a PC'. So when I tell them I can build a much faster PC for less than a prebuilt, they say 'but either will do the job, won't they' or something along those lines.

What I've argued: 1st argument The company that assembles the PC is a business, they need to make money. They do this by buying a lot worse parts (PSU, Mobo). The people buying prebuilts are typically going to be the people who are scared of buying parts and assembling it themselves, meaning the company assembling it can charge a premium just to build it, if you know what I'm trying to say. Like, the people who are scared have to pay that much, otherwise they won't be getting anything.

2nd argument: The arguments against my parents arguments above.

3rd argument: They get all the parts non-techy people are going to be looking at (CPU, GPU, RAM), because that's what people want to look at. Then they cheap out on other parts, because non-techy people don't care about that.

4th argument: (Sort of linked to the first argument), they are charging extra mainly for the building fees, but it doesn't cost £194 to get the PC built. What I mean by that is, I found a prebuilt, and copied it's specs to PcPartPicker, it cost £194 more to get it prebuilt.

MOST COMMON COMMENTS ANSWERED: NZXT BLD isn't available in the UK. Microcenter isn't available in the UK. I'm not going to build it behind their backs.
My uncle can't build PCs anymore. I'm 14. This is my money being spent.

Edit: wow, thanks for all of the support, i'll try to answer as many comments as i can :)

    Thermal paste?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 10:46 AM PDT

    Do I REALLY need it?

I'm just kidding. What kind should I get? I've got a half used tube of arctic 5 lying around but it's been a couple years since it was opened and I'd rather just get a new one. So what's new in the world of thermal paste?

Ryzen 3600 with stock cooler for now. Probably not going to overclock. At least for a little while. I'm sure I will eventually. After I get an aftermarket cooler.

    Thanks!

I’m about to buy pc parts, is it worth upgrading from a 5600xt to a 5700xt but then having to downgrade from the ryzen 7 3800x to the ryzen 5 3600?

is building a pc hard? easy?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 12:27 AM PDT

so i'm planning on building a pc over the summer, so i'm starting to research ( i'm a pc noob ) parts and general things about pcs. i've watched few pc build tutorials (not verge's build don't worry) and it doesn't seem like building a pc is hard, but i see many reddit posts saying that it took like 5-6 hours to finish building their pc, and that they had a lot of trouble with it.

overall, i'm pretty confident and i think building a pc won't be that hard, but those reddit posts trigger anxiety and sort of tells me i will have hard times building my own pc. (maybe i'm just overreacting lol)

so, is building a pc hard??

Brother's gaming PC lags and freezes while playing Fortnite

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 02:24 PM PDT

I'll keep this as short as possible (x-post):

My little brother has an expensive gaming PC. He has an i9 and a 2080. Both are about a year old.

When he plays Fortnite recently, his game lags badly. It frequently drops below 60FPS. It also sometimes freezes for multiple seconds in a row.

We've checked his CPU usage and temp: usage stays at around 50% and temp stays at around 50C.

We checked his GPU. Similar stats, medium usage and temp stays around 60C.

I'm at a loss for what could be the cause. I don't know what else to check.

Any help is extremely appreciated. Thank you.

So I'm saving money for a new gaming pc, I'll have enough by next summer, about 650€ budget, yes i know by then prices will change and probably new components will come out, but if I can't find anything else and the prices are similar to now I'll go with the following build

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 12:48 PM PDT

    MSI B450M mortar max (mATX)

Ryzen 5 2600 or 2600X or 3600 (depends on what the prices will be by next summer)

Gigabyte geforce Gtx 1660 super 6GB OC

    2x8GB 3200MHz RAM

    SanDisk SSD 240GB type 2.5

Be Quiet System Power 9 600W 80PLUS bronze Non modular

And for case, either Aerocool bolt, shard, Cylon mini or Aero - 500, I don't know which

(so yeah that's all, please let me know if this whole build would work fine, it's for 1080p gaming)

Build first pc, worked once, now it isn’t!

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 06:40 AM PDT

    Hey,

So I built my first pc with an ASrock b450 gaming itx, Ryzen 5 2600, Corsair vengance 16gb ddr4 3200mhz, gtx 1660.

Got it working first time, installed windows, updated bios, few drivers. Then checked the ram speed and it was running at 2133mhz. So I changed the ram speed to 3200mhz which caused a blue screen, then tried again at 3000mhz and it hasn't posted since.

When I turn the pc on the fans come on, the hdd is working. However the mobo has no LEDs to tell me if there's a problem.

I can't get the pc to post at all, I've tried: Changing the ram around, 1 ram at a time, in different slots Used a paper clip as a jumper to clear the cmos, have tried the recommended time in the manual of 5 seconds, also tried varying times up to 15 minutes Taken the power to cmos battery out for 15 minutes too Tried plugging the display to the mobo and gpu

Out of ideas now so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks :)

Planning on building a gaming PC!

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:58 PM PDT

So I asked for help in r/buildapcforme and someone kindly sent me a link to a pcpartpicker list to show me what I could do with my budget.

    (Here it is)

I was wondering : should I rather go for a i5-9600k or a AMD Ryzen 5 3600 ? I don't know about overclocking even I've heard of it, I don't know if it's safe and I don't think I plan on doing it. With all that info, which one is the the best in your opinion?

    Grounding Wooden PC case

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:21 PM PDT

I am thinking about building a wooden PC case. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer to is the metal case is what grounds the PC or if it's the PSU that grounds the PC. I figured it was the PSU since it was connected to all other units and once it's plugged into the wall it, along with the whole system is grounded. If I built the PC case out of wood without metal casing running to each component would everything work?

Is it worth it to use 2 GPU slots?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 12:46 PM PDT

I recently built a low budget PC from mostly 2nd hand parts on ebay. It's mainly for my girlfriend's college and uni work, but also to run a few games (nothing fancy, just the sims and such.)

MB: Asus P8Z77-V LX CPU: Intel i5-3570k RAM: 8gb ballistix sport (4gb ×2) and can increase when my budget/need does 120GB SSD as a boot drive 1TB HDD for storage

I currently have a Gigabyte GT 630 2gb GPU installed, and I have a Nvidia GTX 745 4gb arriving tomorrow, which will be switching into the 16× slot. I realise that they obviously won't run together with crossfire etc as they're not identical, but will it make any difference at all to put the GT630 into the 2nd slot, or is it just wasted power/heat?

I'm not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, and to be honest, I'm absolutely astonished that I built the thing and it worked without issue first time.

How do I make sure my RAM is compatible with my Ryzen 5 1600AF?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 12:40 PM PDT

I heard there's some fuss about a necessary amount of MHz to have/reconfigure in order to make the RAM work with this CPU/Ryzen CPUs. What MHz should I get to make absolutely sure the memory is compatible with the CPU or is it standard that you have to reconfigure it?

People who build PC's and resell them, what platform do you use for sales, and what exactly do you do to turn a profit?

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 09:06 AM PDT

Trying to find a way to earn some extra cash on the side throughout quarantine. I would think the PC market should be larger at this time with so many indoors. I'm not having luck selling on eBay, (which I sell everything else just fine, but PC's won't sell) and I don't know where to go from here. Any ideas? Not sure if this question is allowed on this subreddit or not. Hope it is!

    Looking for advice on parts

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:50 PM PDT

So for the past 8 years, I've been living that laptop life, due to the constraints of schooling. However, I finally have both the place (and money) to put together a desktop. After speaking with some friends and glancing over some advice on this subreddit, I've made a list. I have a budget of about $2050, but I need to get a KB+M so I would prefer to keep the budget of the actual PC $1950ish or lower. I know that I can add in extra RAM or storage, but those are components I would rather add on later to save myself money now. I also need an internet card (no ethernet connection to my room, RIP), but I am not sure which one would be the best to use here.

Any advice/tips for a desktop noob would be greatly appreciated!

Custom Gaming PC ($2,400 first build)

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 09:30 AM PDT

After getting guidance/lists from various different forums on my initial PC goals I was pretty conflicted. I decided to try and find as many common themes as I could within the recommendations to put together a list I felt satisfied with.

I initially started out with a budget of $2,000 USD for my PC and have been sucked into extending like so many others. I'm now contemplating a build for about $2,500 because my goal had grown into trying to fit the Ryzen 9 3900x in with the RTX 2080 ti. This budget is only for the PC itself. Not for peripherals.

I designed this with the ideas I got from a few helpful people and a weekend's worth of research. It's very possible that I've made some mistakes as I haven't built a PC in 20 years. Feel free to let me know your thoughts! Also please keep in mind that I'm already over budget. If you post and tell me my ram is shitty or something like that then Im probably aware and planning to upgrade shortly after. However, if you do see a direct performance upgrade or a way to save money without losing any performance then please help me by mentioning it. I'm not willing to part with the case, however, unless there's another that's worth it that has the front tower window. Thanks

Current part list for PC under $400, need help

    Posted: 06 Apr 2020 01:10 PM PDT

Hi, first time poster here. So I was thinking of getting parts to build a new PC, but I've never built one before and have some basic knowledge on PC parts in general. The maximum I can spend is £400 GBP (which is just about $490 USD) as my parents were thinking of buying a PS4, so I tried looking for builds under $400 USD to try and save money and found this part list on gamerscan.com:

    • AMD Ryzen 5 3400G
    • Wraith Spire Cooler
    • Radeon RX Vega 11
    • Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB
    • MSI B450M PRO-VDH MAX
    • ADATA SU635
    • EVGA 500 BR
    • Cooler Master Q300L

The main games I want to play are Overwatch, Rainbow 6 Siege and Warzone at 60fps 1080p preferably.

My current deskop PC's PSU is this according to its website: "Standard 250W PSU Active PFC or optional 250W up to 90% Efficient PSU (80 PLUS Gold); ENERGY STAR 5.2 compliant, Active PFC"

I want to know if these parts are the absolute best I could get for under $400 USD or if there are better value alternatives. Thanks for the help in advance!
