History of Computer Hardware book/resources ? Posted: 05 Feb 2020 08:17 AM PST I don't know if this fits the subreddit entirely but I figured I could try. I like to learn about computer hardware and I've got a particular interest in the history of computer hardware (like when particular models of graphics cards/CPUs were made, which model was the first to do x feature, etc). I mentioned this to a few people and they found it as exciting as watching paint dry. I find myself googling a lot, but lately I've been wanting to find a book that would describe the history of computer hardware, preferably with pictures (to examine the ports and help differentiate hardware). I haven't been able to find something like this so I wanted to reach out and see if there was something like this around or to find other sources that will help me learn about computer hardware history. Thanks! [link] [comments] |

On what basis are processor architectures selected? Why are there only two major ones? Posted: 05 Feb 2020 08:23 AM PST I know that there are CISC and RISC processors but on what basis are they selected? I only see x86 and ARM being used exclusively in mainstream hardware while others like PowerPC, MIPS, SPARC, etc. have little to no market share. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the architectures and ISAs? Bonus question: I read that CISC and RISC processors can't be compared with benchmarks ie Apple's A-family processors can't be compared to Intel's with benchmarks as it isn't accurate. Why is that?
