    Simple Questions - February 05, 2020

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Guidance on CPU cooling...

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 05:23 AM PST

So let me put this into context, I will be strictly gaming no streaming or media programmes etc. I have bought all my parts that consist of: i7-9700k Z390-Auros pro Asus RTX 2080 ti ROG STRIX OC Samsung 970 Corsair vengeance LPX 3200mhz 2x16gb EVGA Supernova 850w psu

So the only things I have left to buy are case fans and decide on a cooling method. I was going to go with the NOCTUA NH-D15 so that I didn't ever have to worry about AIO pump failure however as the time draws closer I'm wondering what collectively everyone's thoughts are regarding this? I like the idea of no concerns over leaks with the Noctua. I guess what I'm looking for is if anyone thinks with all of my components the Noctua will not provide enough cooling? Also what people's recommendations on CPU cooling would be. Thanks in advance!

Please put a budget when you're requesting for build help.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 10:21 AM PST

There have been so many times where people needed help with a build or component upgrade and the budget wasn't listed. It becomes much harder to help when we don't know how much money you're able to spend.

    2700x only $140

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 06:47 AM PST

I am planning out a new itx build and upgrading from an i5-4790k. I have been looking at the 3700x but Microcenter currently has the 2700x for $140 vs $280 for the 3700x.

I am planning on using for some Photoshop and Premiere as a hobby and light gaming as most of my gaming is done on console.

Do you think the extra $140 is worth it to go with the 3700x over the 2700x? Also I am factoring in the hassle of trying to upgrade the bios of the itx mobo to support the 3700 since it appears most itx b450 boards do not support out of box. Since you all are the pros, what do you think?

    Thermal Paste? Yes or No

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 11:24 AM PST

Hi all. I'm doing a new PC build. My last system I built is probably 9 years old.

My question is about thermal paste. I got the AMD Ryzen 5 2600 chip. The instructions show installation of the chip then the fan with NO thermal paste. Is this how it is now? We don't need it? My son said he didn't need it with his now 1-2 year old build.

If we don't need it, would someone please explain why not? Thanks!

I have a running PC. I have a properly wired case. I play games. But I am totally stumped on these.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 06:26 AM PST

    Here's a pic

    Ryzen 5 2600x

    Gigabyte b450m ds3h wifi

    2x8 crucial ballistix 3200 ddr4

    EVGA gtx 970 4gb (3.5gb?)

    512gb SSD.

Following questions I cannot figure out...

Q: My ram says 11xx hz in the PC, it's ddr4 so that's really 22xx? But then it's rated for 3200 so it should read 1600 in the PC? I have no idea how to change this, and I can't figure it out...

A: enable xmp in bios to overclock ram to it's real speed. Thank you u/MrBigWaffles

Q: I want a custom fan curve for my gtx970 but I cannot figure it out. I'm beyond confused...

A: MSI afterburner will let me customize fan curves. Thank you u/Ure_Mom_Gey and u/Ootter31019

Q: I think this is the last thing but hwinfo seems really glitchy, and everything else is showing absurdly high temps for my CPU, is this normal? What should I use to track my temps?

A: I'm gonna try Ryzen Master and NZXT CAM as soon as I get home from work. Thank you u/U1traViol3t

    Thanks guys.

Edit: will be trying all of these as soon as I get home from work today. You guys rock.

    GPU Upgrade help

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 08:39 AM PST

This Sunday I'll be upgrading my GPU from a Radeon RX580 to a RTX 2070 Super.

Aside from physically removing the old card and plugging in the new, what do I need to do to transition smoothly?

    Thanks!

Games feel smoother when not limiting FPS/limiting it to high refresh rate

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 06:43 AM PST

I've been experiencing some stutters in games (mostly due to RAM problems but this is now fixed). Rocket League was really stuttery when locked at 60FPS in game, so I locked the FPS to the highest (250FPS) and it was smooth AF. I then tried 120FPS: smooth AF. Then I tried 80FPS, but it was really stuttery. I then re-tried 60FPS, and it was still a little bit stuttery. The weird part is that when turning VSync on (which locks the game at 60FPS), the game is butter smooth. Is that a normal behaviour?

Random Internet Disconnections from the PC

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 12:12 PM PST

Hi! So, I'm experiencing random Internet disconnections that last for a few seconds before reconnecting by itself. Some infos: -Connected via ethernet cable. -I'm on Win10 LTSC (1809). -The motherboard is an Asus M51AC (Asus H87M-PRO with a slighty locked down BIOS). -The LAN card is a Realtek.

What happens exactly? Internet disconnects itself from the PC for a few seconds and then reconnects itself. While it happens the other connected devices are fine (both via cable and Wifi).

When it happens? Completely random, I've noticed it more frequently while playing video games (especially Dead By Daylight and League of Legends), but that could mean nothing since I can notice it more easily from there when I get kicked out of a game session. Infact iirc it happened one time while I was browsing youtube. I can go for hours (literally 6/10hrs or more) without having issues and it randomly happens. Once a day at least tho, and usually when I play a game.

What have you tried? -Different Modem. -Different cable and ethernet port. -Different ISP (I was having the same issue before changing it). -Tweaking the LAN options (disable battery saving, green ethernet and similar). -Updating/changing drivers. -Removing any other Wifi PCIe CARD that may conflict. -Checking the windows event report to check if anything wrong.-->I didn't noticed anything strange, but I'm not an expert about the application, so I may missed something, I'm not 100% sure.

What haven't you tried yet? -Formatting and installing a different windows version. -Using a live Linux.-->Since I don't know the cause, I could stare at the desktop for days without anything happening and while having the issue anyway.

For how long have you had the issue? A year or so, not sure, a long time anyway.

Before buying a new motherboard or a new LAN card, I want to make sure that is actually an hardware issue. What do you guys reccomend me to do before I format everything? Did I miss something? If you need more infos, just ask. Thanks.

    5700XT replacement

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 06:51 AM PST

Hi! This is my first post on reddit and I wanted to ask a question. I have a sapphire pulse 5700xt and I bought it from micro center with a protection plan and it with it I can I return it and get in store credit towards a another graphics card. I bought mine for $409 and I kind of want to replace it with something that has similar performance but not that many driver issues. At first i wasn't having this many issues and it's frustrating. It's been 2 months since my build. Which nvidia gpu would you recommend. Budget is $400-550. Anything with similar 1440p performance. Thank you!!

Update: GPU is going up to 92 C under high load

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 01:21 PM PST

    Previous Post: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/eyrtn9/whats_should_the_average_temperature_of_a_gpu/

I watched my gpu temperature while playing Sekiro and it went up to 92C degrees. I already have 65 hours of playtime in Sekiro with that gpu...

It can't be that the gpu just takes too much power from the new PSU (650W) right?

My rx 580 was stopped at the airport, couldn't board flight with it.

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 10:18 AM PST

My aunt was flying to my country from the US, Florida. She offered me to bring me some hardware I've got over there, mainly a psu and a gpu, the 580. She got here last weekend and informed me 'they', I assume TSA, told her she couldn't take the gpu on the flight. They would have gotten rid of it, they told her, had my cousin not been there to take it back with him. Every person I've asked about bringing hardware from outside borders has told me there are no issues I should be aware of. To just not bring many of the same things. This is not the first time I've brought something from outside. My psu is here, a couple months ago I brought myself a R5 2600, a b450 and some ram sticks. What happened? Why did my gpu got stopped before flight? Is there something I should be made aware of? My best friend tells me he believes there is foul play involved, that someone tried to take my gpu for themselves, appearently that happens often according to him, that its a long procedure to get back your stuff once TSA 'misplaces' it? But I honestly have no idea. My aunt offered again to have a friend of hers bring it to me by the end of the month, but I'd like to be made aware of anything that might repeat this past issue once again.

Question regarding base/boost clock, and overclocking

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 01:05 PM PST

I'm currently running a i7 6700K (base 4.0Ghz) which I've overclocked using Asus' 5 Way Optimization so that it boosts to 4.7Ghz.

I'm looking to upgrade to a Ryzen 3900X, but I'm worried that it's base clock (3.8Ghz) and boost (4.6Ghz) will feel slower. The i9900K boosts to 5Ghz, but I really want to go with Ryzen for this build. How much will this really matter, and how easy would this be to overclock? I'm going to be primarily gaming but losing a few frames is a small price to pay, hence why I'm so keen to go with AMD.

Switching from an NZXT H510 to a Meshify C

    What should I upgrade first?

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 02:49 AM PST

I have a Ryzen 3600 and an Rx580 with a good motherboard and a good PSU, my case (Aerocool vs-1) isn't that good and I only have 1 stick of Ram (8GB 2133MHz). Which one should I upgrade first? With my budget(100€) I could buy 2 sticks of 16GB Ram or a pretty decent case but I can't choose between one of them.

    Help With First PC Build

Need help regarding 2060 super VS 5700 XT, with Ryzen 5 3600 VS i5-9400f

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 03:49 AM PST

I am coming from laptop gaming so im not 100% familiar with the current budget build meta, that's why am asking for help and general advice here. My main gripe is that Ive never used AMD products, and Ive heard they have issues with certain games sometimes. Apex comes to mind. However the price and performance of a Ryzen 3600 with a 5700 XT seems really good and appealing. Is there any reason that I should chose a different combination, or any general advice? Are my fears legit?

Furthermore the MB Im looking at is ASUS TUF B450M PLUS GAMING. Would this let me OC the CPU and GPU?

ps. Im building this pc mainly for Tarkov, Cyberpunk and 1080p gaming in general with occasional 1440p if the frames stay 60 or above

Shopping parts for my first build, looking for advice

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 08:35 AM PST

Hello, I'm looking at building my first PC. My starting point is the Logical Increments "Very Good" tier (https://www.logicalincrements.com/).

My budget is about $1000. I plan to use the PC for gaming and I'd like to be able to get decent performance at 1440p resolution if possible.

My questions are: are there any known issues or low hanging fruit with any of the logical increments parts? Additionally, if I wanted to spend an extra $200 or so which parts would improvements give the best bang for the buck? Is $1000 even the right ballpark for 1440p gaming or am I just way off base?

I realize all of this might be a bit vague, I hope it doesn't count as "spoonfeeding." Any help would be appreciated.

    Thoughts on PC Upgrade

    Posted: 05 Feb 2020 12:19 PM PST

This is the initial list i've come up with: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/mjXmFG

My current build is incredibly outdated and I'd like to get it up to date for both gaming and creative cloud use.

To be more specific, most played games: Apex Legends, Overwatch, R6, Rocket League most used creative cloud applications: Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere, After Effects, Indesign, Dreamweaver

One of the biggest issues many will be quick to notice is that the GPU will likely bottleneck the CPU. I was just given the GPU as a hand-me-down as I had been using a GTX 660 for years. I am hoping to be able to get another year -- maybe two -- out of the rx 580 if at all possible, and I would like a second opinion on how feasible that is. I'd like to make sure that the parts I buy now are at least somewhat viable for a few years while understanding my GPU needs upgrading soon.

I'm also pretty clueless about PSUs. This PSU has been in my pc forever but has quite a bit of power. Does it need to be upgraded at some point? Or can I just keep it as long as it continues to work/provide enough power.

I'm also pretty clueless as to choosing a mobo past getting the right chipset and having enough USB ports and such.

I've had the same 500 GB HDD for years as well, and I was hoping to add a ~500 GB SDD for more room & quicker startups. Is this a good option for that?

TL;DR - I have the "free" parts. I game and use creative cloud. I'm stuck with the GPU for a year or so. Otherwise, how is it?

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

First PC Build. PC and fans turned on sucessfully. However, my PC immediately started to make a fairly loud clicking sound. Upon closer inspection, I discovered that the middle fan of the Gigabyte 2070 Super was making the sound. When I stop the fan with my finger, the sound goes away, but when it spins back up it immediately starts to click again.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Is this something that can be fixed in BIOS?

Went to boot menu on my b350 PCMATE motherboard, put in 2933 speed,18-20-20-20-38, 1.35V. It would turn on and off until booting with 2133 speed at 15-15-15-36-51

CPU: ryzen overclocked at 3.7, 1.3V, if this is needed.
