    Simple Questions - February 28, 2020

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 04:12 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

Build a PC they said. It's like adult Legos they said.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2020 11:11 PM PST

Legos came in a kit with all the necessary pieces from what I remember.

Jokes aside the last PC I built was when I was a kid using scavenged parts out of bins from my local computer repair shop. I was Dr. Frankenstein and my monster somehow miraculously was able to play the Warcraft games. Even with me having zero knowledge on what I was creating.

Over the past week I've learned, or tried to learn, how to build a PC properly. So I come here today, pride set to the side, to ask for help, feedback, opinions, reassurance and any knowledge this community can give.

Budget is $1000 for a gaming PC. For games like Destiny 2, Monster Hunter World, Sea of Thieves, Anthem, Elite Dangerous. Obviously anything cheaper for around the same performance is much appreciated.

Edit: Wow! Was not expecting to wake up to this much feedback! Someone dropped a gold, that blew my mind. Thank you. And thank you to everyone who took their time to give their feedback. I'm pretty sure now that AMD is the CPU of choice now. I'll definitely look into AMD now. Thanks again everyone!

    3600 or 3200 CL16 for gaming

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:02 AM PST

I go on PCPP alot and most of the time when I ask for opinions on my build people say to get 3200Mhz RAM instead of 3600, I'm going to be using a Ryzen 5 3600, and I'll only be gaming, nothing else

    AMD or Intel CPU

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 09:11 AM PST

I've been on Intel as far as I can remember. My PC right now is an i7 6700k and thus a few years old. I've been wanting to upgrade to an i9 9900k because i could use those extra cores and i guess i'm ready to spend that money. Now, i've had my eyes on all that Ryzen business for a while and tbh i really dont have much information about them. All i know is that they have irrational amounts of cores and are somehow cheaper. Is there anyone who can tell me the equivalent ryzen variant to the i9 and pros and cons? Thanks

Troubleshooting an overheating cpu. Computer is only 2 days old. Please help.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:31 PM PST

Last night my computer was running a program called handbrake and doing some encoding on GoPro videos, I noticed all my fans were running flat out, I was checking my temperatures, in the asus software i recorded the highest at 92 degrees C and saw it around 90 C a couple times. I freaked out and paused everything and then let it go down to 60 then as soon as I started it again it would flare up to 85 almost instantly. I have since learnt that this not hot enough for thermal throttling so shouldn't be any damage, but I'm very conscious of how hot it is for a 2 day old pc and would love to keep the temps under 75. I have taken the heatsink off and made sure there is well applied thermal paste which there is. I am not interested in overclocking so that's not an issue. What can I do now?

Is there a better way to monitor my temperatures?

Do I put my heatsink on the same way I did when I did the first time?

Is my ram too high and causing heating problems?

Have I got a dud cpu?

I had the side plate off temporarily is that a possible cause of high temperatures?

EDIT: Do I need to upgrade my CPU?

    Specs:

CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 2600 (with stock heatsink) MB - asus prime b450m-a Ram - Corsair vengeance 2x8 16gb 3200mhz set to run at 3200mhz Gpu: sapphire pulse rx 5500 xt 8gb Case: Deepcool mattrex 55 PSU: Corsair RM550X gold

How can equilibrate this PC more?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:23 PM PST

I've been researching on how to build a balanced PC for about 6 hours in the past days and I've made this PC. I would like to know how I could improve it. I built it thinking about using it for gaming. I do know about the differences between different CPUs and GPUs but I don't know how RAM is different from one brand to another, apart from the model's speed. I also didn't know what the best power supply for this build was so I went overkill and got a 450w. If anyone knows how to balance this PC more, by using a different RAM or getting another PSU please tell me because I am thinking about building it by myself.

What I man by balancing is not spending extra money on a component that won't perform at 100% most of the time. So a great thing would be to get a RAM that will perform at 100%, rather than a RAM that is more expensive that will just perform at a 70% or something.

i want to thank this subreddit for loosing my friend

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 11:47 AM PST

    Thank you r/buildapc

After several months of researching and searching for the right parts, about compatibility issues and trying to have a decent budget. I can finally move on from my old friend : a 12 year old dual core 2.0Ghz / Geforce 9600M/ 2Go Ram . He was very resistant, a hot head that produced an absurd amount of thermal energy, and making the noise of a broken helicopter just by opening a single tab on google chrome. He was annoying, but he was very nice to me. Always doing the job when it needed to (Very low quality gang rise up)

However sometimes even the best friends grow in time differently and have to move on from each other, and today is the day.

I made my first ever build with the help of a friend, after 12 years of bittersweet pain : https://imgur.com/a/qxspuYI

    My build :

    CPU : ryzen 5 2600X
GPU : Zotac Nvidia Rtx 2060
Mobo : MSI B450M-A Pro Max
Ram : T force Delta RGB 2x8 Go 3200 Mhz
    PSU : Nox Urano VX 650W 80 Bronze +
    Storage : WD 500Go + Pny SDD 240 Go
Case : Nox Coolbay Sx 4 fans RGB

(still waiting for my AOC 24G2U monitor to be delivered, coming in 4-5 days)

Can I use this Windows 10 that I found?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:52 PM PST

I found a computer in a dumpster and took the harddrive (HDD) out along some other stuff. I plugged the harddrive in my new computer that I'm building and when starting up I got to the point where to submit password.

I used Lazesoft to get in, removed the password and then did a complete restart to clear the computer from everything.

So now, I have a clean computer with W10. Will the previous owner find out that I'm using his old HDD? I haven't connected to internet yet. Or should I buy a new key?

I don't want to discuss me looting in dumpsters or if this is stealing. Please keep to the subject.

Fps drops to like 30 for 1ms and then goes back up to whatever the max fps I was getting.

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:49 PM PST

I know this seems like something minor but it really throws u off when all of a sudden your screen freezes and you teleport side ways... Thought it was loss at first but noticed in cs and other games like the cycle it happens and i can watch the fps drop and then go back up.

I have installed the drivers before anyone asks :)

    Good ryzen motherboard?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:29 PM PST

Hi, I plan to upgrade my current intel desktop to a ryzen one. I don't really know what to look for in motherboards other than things like ram slots, cpu compatibility, and maybe m.2 support. Is this mobo good, or is there something better?: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07XPZMKQ6?tag=pcpapi-20&linkCode=ogi&th=1&psc=1

Ps I really don't want to deal with flashing the bios.

Everything in the build seems to work fine and there have been no issues so far, but whenever the PC turns off, there's a small pop sound that occurs at the same time one of the motherboard LEDs flashes. It happens every time the PC is shut off. I believe it's coming from the motherboard, I'm currently writing this post on said PC so I can't exactly turn it off to check right now but I'll double check in a moment. Should I be concerned about this?

    What Ryzen 7?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 05:05 AM PST

I'm once again asking for your f̶i̶n̶a̶n̶c̶i̶a̶l̶ ̶s̶u̶p̶p̶o̶r̶t̶ advice.

I'm a total noob in building (currently trying to build a gaming PC) and for my processor they told me a good choice was the AMD Ryzen 5 3600 but then they insisted on a Ryzen 7.

I don't know what Ryzen 7 I should buy because I don't even know how they're ranked and I don't know what differences there are between the two.

Also depending on the price my budget could not be enough so I don't know if it's worth it to get the Ryzen 7.

As a last information they suggested the MSI TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard, is it ok for a Ryzen 7 or not?

    RAM showing as 2666mhz

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 12:34 PM PST

Hey guys, I bought a prebuilt (mostly out of convenience and honestly the prices of the same parts on pcpartpicker were like a $20 difference not including the case so I thought it was a pretty good deal.)

My RAM is - DDR4-3200MHz ADATA XPG SPECTRIX D41

and MOBO - ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WiFi)

I honestly am not too comfortable going into BIOS and changing anything out of paranoia that i'd screw something up but, I had an update that needed a restart and decided to take a peek.. I noticed my memory speed is sitting at 2666.

I tried to do a little research but didn't really find what I was looking for.. only something about enabling xmp

Is it worth even messing with?

On amazon the ASUS ROG 2060 OC with "the all new nvidia turing GPU architecture" is $600 while a EVGA super FTW3 Ultra is $570. How? Why? Trying to build a new rig and there are just so many god damn variations and price difference even between the same models i dont know where to start.

decent 144 hz 1080p ips monitor?

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 02:07 AM PST

just built a new pc and ended up getting a viewsonic xg2402 monitor after doing a decent amount of research, heard mostly good things about it. It performs well and is smooth and fast but i cannot stand the colors on it, looks really weird and washed out and almost hurts my eyes no matter how much i mess with the settings. Didnt realize how bad TN panels look. Going to return it on amazon most likely. Looking for reccomendations for a 144 hz 1080p IPS panel that will just have nice solid performance and good solid colors that wont be annoying to look at. Dont need anything crazy. Just a nice solid picture without weird washed out colors and 144 hz. 24 inches preferably.

GPU died on me, considering a slight upgrade

    Posted: 28 Feb 2020 01:45 PM PST

After almost 6 years of being a champ my Radeon r9 280x finally died on me. While I really need to build a new rig at this point I unfortunately can't make it work with my budget. In the meantime I was looking at other cards that are compatible with my MB and CPU and could be considered an upgrade. The one that caught my eye was the Radeon RX 580 8 GIG however I saw some concerning posts about its compatibility with a Gigabyte MB. Any recommendations would be helpful on what my next steps should be.
