Do NOT install MSI Dragon Center. EVER!

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 03:22 AM PST

I know this is not hardware related, but I just want to warn people here about my experience with it.

I live in an old house and my WIFI router on the ground floor so I use a powerline adaptor to get 'wired' internet connection on my main PC which is on the first floor.

I built my PC about a year ago and the motherboard is MSI MPG Z390. I have Dragon Center installed from day one as I thought it has a nice feature to check for updates for BIOS and other bits (chipset, etc.).

I, however, had constant issues with my connection. My normal speed is 70 Mb/s but it used to drop to 1 Mb/s like a lot to the point where I was on that speed for 90% of the time. When connected to WIFI I could still see 70 Mb/s but because there are thick walls between the router and my PC the WIFI connection was never solid and I blamed the drop to 1 Mb/s on the old wiring of the house (remember, I use powerline adapter).

I spent countless hours trying to debug it, unplugging things one by one from all the sockets in my house, in the hope to find something that interferes with the powerline adapter but all to no avail... Until I noticed a LAN Manager in the Dragon Center which was enabled by default. I disabled it while being on 1 Mb/s and voila - I got back my 70 Mb/s straight away. It was stable and all was good until recently when I updated to the latest version of the Dragon Center.

First thing I checked after updating is that the LAN Manager is disabled. It was all fine for a bit until I noticed that this time my connection drops to 7 Mb/s. I went through all the debugging cycle once again without finding anything until I noticed that with MSI Dragon Center another utility was installed - cFosSpeed. I Googled it and found out that it is another crap thingy that messes up with your connection. I straight away uninstalled cFosSpeed along with the Dragon Center and once again I have my paid-for 70 Mb/s.

I must say this is completely unacceptable for MSI to install this malicious bloatware that messes up with your connection.

    U-N-F-U-C-K-I-N-G-A-C-C-E-P-T-A-B-L-E

So my advice to you - avoid MSI Dragon Center like a fire.

    /rantover

Note: I have never ever changed any settings for LAN Manager.

Edit: it appears that other manufactures may include network managing software as well so if you experience similar issues - check that you did not enable any of those.

Edit 2: if you have similar issues and have disabled or uninstalled network managing software - you may need to restart your computer to see the difference.

Edit 3: the service is called 'cFosSpeed' and not 'CforSpeed' as I wrongly posted initially. Thanks to u/neanderthaul for spotting it!

The CPU cooler benchmark results that no one asked for.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 08:20 PM PST

Today we will be testing cpu thermals using the Cooler Master Hyper 212evo, the Cooler Master 212BE RGB, and the Cooler Master BE RGB with the sticker I totally didn't forget to remove still on the base of the heatsink.

Test bench set up: Cooler Master Mastercase H500 MSI Tomahawk Max B450 AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF stock MSI GamingX 1660 super stock Arctic MX4 thermal paste

Case Fan Setup: 2x200mm front intake 1x120mm rear exhaust 1x120mm top/rear exhaust

Both exhaust fans, and both cpu fans are Cooler Master MasterFan SF120R RGB 120mm Square Frame Fan w/Hybrid Airflow Blades.

All cooler setups were done in the push/pull configuration All fans were set to 50%

Ambient temperature was 20c +/- .3c during testing.

Starting with the Hyper 212evo: Cinebench r20 Max temp (3 run avg): 58.5c Realbench 15min run Max temp (3 run avg): 60.5c

Hyper 212 BE RGB w/sticker: Cinebench r20 Max temp (3 run avg) was 78c Realbench was not run because I was too busy slamming my head against my desk at 1.5 slams per second (3 run avg)

Hyper 212BE RGB w/o sticker: Cinebench r20 Max temp (3 run avg) was 52.5c Realbench 15min run Max temp (3 run avg): 55.3

Conclusion: Although I thought the the Hyper 212evo and the Hyper 212BE RGB would perform exactly the same, it appears improvements have been made to the 212 for the black edition. Leaving the included sticker on the base of the heatsink showed to drastically increase thermals and I would suggest removing it prior to installation.

Clean out your PC's dust filters regularly

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 08:54 AM PST

My PSU (CoolerMaster MasterWatt 500) makes this weird rattle noise whenever I used to game. At times, the rattle occurs when I'm browsing the internet too. So what I did was place my tower on it's side (horizontally) and the rattle mostly went away. I guess the noise coming from the PSU was a mix of both case vibrations and fan bearings. This was a couple of months ago.

While playing 'A Plague Tale: Innocence' tonight, I noticed the rattle started becoming unbearable again. My GPU temps were also a bit higher than usual, touching 70 degrees celsius and above. I thought to myself, why wait? Just get a new PSU already, but then I decided to check the dust filter by the bottom of the tower. It was pretty much clogged with dust so I quickly cleaned it out and voila! The rattle noise completely went away and my GPU temps improved too!

Just wanted to do a PSA to periodically clean out your dust filters and what not. That feeling of solving a problem is always amazing. I ended up enjoying my game a lot more.

Would an i5-8600k and a gtx 1080 ti be enough for 144fps in apex legends and streaming?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 07:28 AM PST

Basically what the title says, and I am getting a free 240hz monitor with gsync. Is that going to work with this pc? Will there be any significant issues? I was originally going to buy a 144hz monitor but since im getting 240hz for free, I would rather save the money.

EDIT: the specs arent exact but I know it has a Z series motherboard, Liquid Cooling for OC'ing, 16 gb ddr4 3200mhz ram, gtx 1080ti and i5-8600k. Also any overclocking suggestions? My friend hasnt tried overclocking on it and installed the Liquid cooling so I would have that option.

    Does difference between Ryzen 3600 vs I 9700 matter for 4k 60fps?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 12:56 PM PST

I want to make a build with 2080ti for 4k gaming only. Because I only play singplayer games and I like 4k more than 120+ fps I only need 60fps.

So when Cyberpunk 2077 comes out if new Nividia Ampere isn't more expansive than 2080ti at lunch I would like to get it if I don't loose my saved up money. And i would love to play Cyberpunk 2077 at 4k 60fps.

But that got me wondering. Will something like Ryzen 3600 be too weak for that then? And is spending more on i 9700 something that I should do for 4k 60fps? Different in price is solid and I would of course rather avoid it.

But if it's the only way I'm ready to save for longer.

How to build a 0 dB custom Pc?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 08:37 AM PST

One of the Perks of owning a modern Notebook is that it's completely silent, it's literally 0 dB. That is something I have yet to accomplish with a custom Tower build. Even if you stop all the fans there's still noise coming from the Psu or the motherboard or even from the Gpu. What is the difference in these two, how do I modify my tower so that it is completely silent in everyday use too?

Switching from Intel to AMD, will I need a new windows distribution?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 08:55 AM PST

I'm upgrading my CPU, ram, GPU, and motherboard, and switching from an intel chipset to AMD. Will my copy of Windows still work normally?

I know I'll need new drivers etc for everything, I'm planning on wiping my storage drives of everything except the OS.

    Long term 1080p gpu suggestions

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 01:06 PM PST

I've been seeing a lot of push for the 1660 super as an amazing 1080p GPU. While I agree that currently it looks as an amazing deal, I'm wondering what it longevity will be. I only rebuild my computer once every 5-6 years so I am wondering what 1080p GPU solution would work best for my situation.

Basically, what GPU could i count on for 1080p gaming for multiple years, not just current titles?

30+ builds under my belt - RMAed every piece - CPU + DRAM lights on - post

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 01:01 PM PST

    Hi guys,

    Build is:

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600X

Mobo: AsRock X570 Phantan Gaming 4

    RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200 Hz 2 x 8gb

    PSU: Corsair TX 550M

Post Status Checker showing the CPU and DRAM red lights on. Haven't been able to budge from there. Lights are consistent.

    WHAT I've tried and tested:

    1) Plugged in everything correctly. I made sure that all connections were seated properly (CPU was properly seated, CPU fan in, ram seated correctly).

    2) I've moved around every stick of RAM in every slot. I've tried every combo with one stick and both sticks.

    3) I've flashed the CMOS repeatedly with the steps above.

    4) I've RMAed the board and have tried it with TWO Ryzen 5 3600X chips.

    5) I've RMAed the CPU and have tried it with TWO AsRock X570 Phantom 4 boards.

    6) I've rotated the GPU with another GPU (EXACT same model) in a working system and made both cards functioned. They did.

    7) I've used a bigger PSU (850 Gold) that I know works.

This build has been going on for a month, I can't even remember any of the other stuff we've done!

I've RMAed essentially 4 parts at this point and nothing is working. Any ideas you may have, please send them my way.

My buddy and I are short of crying and he needs to get out of wood LoL.

Does difference between 3600 and 3600x cooler matter if I won't overclock?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 12:50 PM PST

People say they are at almost same level of performance in terms of gaming.

And I don't want to overclock because I'm afraid I will lose warranty and I might ruin the CPU.

But difference in coller sounds interesting.I don't want to buy aftermath cooler because I don't overclock. So does difference matter?

Is PCIe 2 my bottle neck!?

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 12:39 PM PST

    Hi All,

    I need your help/recommendation. It turned out I'm a moron... :S

I have an older pc from 2012-2013 and was using it so far with luck and performed very well. Specs are:

    Coolermaster HAF 912 case

    ASUS P8Z68-V PRO

    Intel Core i7-2600K

    Noctua NH D14

    Corsair Vengance 4x4 GB DDR3 RAM - CML8GX3M2A1600C9

    GIGABYTE GTX 1060 G1 Gaming Rev 2.0 6GB

    Corsair HX 750W

    Kingston SSDNow V+100 96GB

    HITACHI 3TB HDD 7200rpm

I just got a very good deal on an AMD Rx5700XT (PCIe 4) and decided to swop the graphics card as I updated my monitor to an ultrawide and fps dropped and couldn't keep the 60 fps target.

(until now I was under the impression that my mobo has PCIE3 slots...)

The system boots everything's fine but when I start a game it loads but right after the game starts the system clicks, all goes black and restarts. I was suffering to find out what might be the problem. At first I thought the power supply might not be enough, or the CPU or the gpu is faulty. I just checked the mobo specs now and realized it is only PCIE2... :(((

Could this be the problem? I figured PCI3 will do just fine but that's not what I have.

I was trying to save money and go with this PC as long as I can or the CPU dies... I just reapplied thermal paste an all.

How can I make sure it's the PCIe slot that causes the issue?

And if this is the case - what would be the best used/new mobo+CPU combo I should look into? (Also considering future proof built for at least 3-5 years to come?

Ryzen and B450? X570? X370? More threads would be nice as I'm a casual gamer only, I use the PC for work and ocasionally video editing, so I think we can say mixed use!?

Also it would be nice to keep as many parts as I can you know to save money!? :) But it would be good to know what I should replace for sure.

    Additional Info:

As some of you say it should not be PCIe2... It might worth to mention: As I said everything worked fine so far, and I could play. BUT - I did not change anything before swoping the GPUs, so just turned off took out the nVidia card and put in the AMD, the system booted in very low resolution > I installed the radeon driver and all seems fine. So my question is: Could some old Nvidia drivers/software cause the issue? (I tried to uninstall what I found but most probably not all.

Should I try to reinstall Windows in full maybe!?

    I'm desperate. :(

Any help is appreciated. Thank you so much in advance!

Edit2: I DDU'd but still the same sympthoms. :( System either restarts after a few seconds a game starts or the monitor loses the displayport signal (screen goes black). :'( Could it be the old PSU!? It's around 7 years old and it seem this new card's TDP is almost a 100W higher than my old nvidia...

Question regarding airflow and cpu cooler

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 12:16 PM PST

So, my intel stock cooler is dying and I am about to replace it with my first ever non-stock cooler.

I went with a Noctua NH-U9S and bought a 2nd fan to go with it.

I have a fan at the back of the pc that is pussing the air out and 2 fans at the front for intake.

    1) I just realised that the door at the front of my pc is never open, does that make the 2 intakes fan useless? 2) How should install the fans? I am thinking that the fan that is over the ram and facing the intake should pull the air so that it goes into the cooler and the other should push it out?

Sorry if this is a noobish question, I just haven't done it before and all the push/pull site that I found are talking about radiators.

    Thank you

    Looking for a book-

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 02:19 PM PST

Does anyone have a recommendation for a book that explains how each component relates to each other, and the overall anatomy of a PC? I know there are videos and podcasts available, but I personally learn a lot better from a "text book" style of studying. I would like it to break down all the numbers as well. I am planning on building my first gaming PC within the next few months, and I'd like to know what I'm doing before i get all up in them guts. Thanks <3

A tale of Two 2060 Supers

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 02:18 PM PST

I'm having trouble deciding between two rtx 2060 supers: EVGA SC Ultra or MSI Armor.

Right now I can get both for the same $399.99 price (Microcenter near me), both have the same boost clock speed, and both have 3 year limited warranties. I can't find any info on their temperature comparisons; at least no comparisons from the same test system.

What should the deciding factor be then?

    Splitters and Power

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 02:13 PM PST

    Hey Reddit.

I recently upgraded my PSU to accommodate a new RTX 2060 Super. Trouble is that I have been getting power failures ever since. I have been troubleshooting and know that it isn't the GPU or thermals and that all connections are properly secured. I think my power supply is faulty, however, there is one last thing I want to check first. The SATA power cable that came with the PSU is rather stiff, so I have been using a couple of splitters to reach the harder to reach drives (I think I only used one for a couple of peripheral SSD's). Question: would having a splitter or two on the SATA power cable have the ability to lower voltage enough to trigger a Kerel-Power error? I'm just trying to cover all my bases before I contact Corsair. Any thoughts?

Note: This is a Bronze CX750 Watt PSU from Corsair, which I believe should be more than enough for my build.

    advice on existing build -- Ryzen 5 2600, GTX 1660 S

    Posted: 19 Feb 2020 01:51 PM PST

Hello all, this is my first time posting here.

Incredibly impressed by the level of detail and consideration shown in the posts I have been reading and I will do my best to live up to that standard -- with the caveat being that I am very new to the world of PC builds.

The story is that last week my laptop of 6 years died on me... and I made an uncharacteristically impulsive decision to go ahead and put together my own gaming desktop. I haven't had a console in years and I miss being able to play games, and justified the expense on the basis that I need something which allows me to work from home...

Long story short, after a bit of research and some window shopping, I walked out of Canada Computers with a much lighter wallet and what I thought was a very cool build, the core specs of which are:

    - AMD Ryzen 5 2600 -- $160

    - ASUS Prime B450M-A -- $90

    - Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB DDR4 -- $100

    - MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Ventus XS OC 6GB -- $320

    - WD BLUE 500gb M.2 -- $85

    - Cooler Master elite 500W PSU (came already installed in the tower, package deal for $90)

The total cost was just over $1000CDN. I've managed to get it all up and running and I can honestly say that I've never had such a fast machine, it makes me a bit giddy no joke.

However.... I have been doing some reading and I think I may have made a mistake with my power supply... and also perhaps by having gone with what some people consider to be a more budget oriented GPU. I've spoken to the people at CC and they will take a return on both the case and GPU even though I've had them in use for a couple of days.

My question to you is whether I should invest an extra $100, $200, $300... etc. to level up the system by putting in a more powerful PSU and/or GPU.

My priority is to have something that is going to stand me in good stead for a couple of years. I would hate to be in a position where something on the system either burns out, or is rendered obsolete by new advances in short order.

With that being said, I am by no means an enthusiast or connoisseur in this realm. Games played at at 1080p with solid refresh rates still blow my mind... but if next year's titles are all going to be limited to 1440, or 4K, I want to be able to account for that.

Many thanks to any who have taken the time to read all the way through this.
