    Graduation/big boy job build

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 05:36 AM PST

Been waiting a long time to complete this build, and the time has finally come! I graduated, got a big boy job, and saved enough money to complete my current dream build. I was going to wait for the next series of GPUs but I couldn't wait any longer. I hope y'all enjoy looking at it as much as I do!

A huge thank you to r/buildapc and r/buildapcforme

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 05:11 AM PST

When I originally set out to upgrade my computer I didn't see if feasable at all to build my own computer. The whole concept was quite scary to me - however after long thought about it and the desire to actually want the personal achivement of having built the system I use.

I can't thank both r/buildapc and r/buildapcforme enough for the help they gave me in this process. I absolutely would've both wasted money and have built a terrible - broken system if it wern't for both these two reddits.

I can happily say with weeks of waiting for parts, watching LTT, Bitwit, and tons of other youtubers with their various build-guides, with various ups and HUGE downs (mainly a bootloop, and other scary issues) - my computer is built and I'm quite proud of it.

I'm sure the end-specs are modest compared to the more enthustatic on this reddit, though its finished!

My setup isn't actually finished yet, waiting on some new gear but here's some photos of my first ever build with no help!

Is 74C too hot for Ryzen?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 05:07 AM PST

I was rendering a video and saw my CPU core temp was 74C while the system temp was 43C. The CPU is a Ryzen 7 3800x. Is this too hot?

    Nordic Warriors Build - Ryzen 3600 / Nitro+ 5700xt / Sprayed Meshify C

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST

    First of all: Pictures

Wanted a white & blue PC to match in the room, so ended with a white meshify C and a deep blue front mesh. The blue on the mesh clashed with the wallpaper color, and on top of that Fractal Design doesn't supply a top mesh in the appropriate color (only black), so I decided to just spray white lacquer over the meshes, window-screws and PCI covers + While I was at it, I plastidipped the insides of the case, to get rid of the majority of the black. Personally, I think Fractal Design should have released their white Meshify this way to begin with.

Building went smooth. I wish I noticed the shop where I bought my gear had an Alpenföhn Brocken 3 cooler in white available as well. That one "leans back" so perhaps would have cleared my RAM better, as I will have to move the front fan to the back if I ever upgrade to 32Gigs. And even if I move the fan to the back, it needs to be moved a bit higher away from motherboard as it touches the back shroud if I want to install it flush with the cooler.

Finally, I'm a bit bummed that Asrock's leds under that back shroud have a pink glow, when set to white. Would have worked better with blue, which is also where the leds under the other heatsink are stuck to, as well as the RAM leds. I don't see it though, as the CPU Cooler blocks the view, so don't care too much about it.

Monitor is a Philips 346B1C (Not available at PCPartPicker at the moment) 3440*1440 @ 100Hz, with built in KVM switch.

    "Gaming" chair recommendations

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 10:03 AM PST

So, I spend a lot of time in front of my PC at home, either while working, or while gaming, and I would love to replace my nearly 20 years old chair that I picked up from Best Buy. The thing is, I'm 6' 1", and about 270 lbs, so I need something that'll fit me comfortably enough, while providing enough support. I would also prefer something that's tall enough to provide support for my head when I'm leaning back and watching a video.

I don't really care about the materials too much, but I do want something solid, that's not going to last just a year before breaking.

I've looked around a bit, and I haven't really seen much in the way yet that helps in the making of a decisive decision for any specific chair. Does anyone have any recommendations?

How much free space to leave on SSD?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 11:59 AM PST

I've read recently that it's best not to fill an SSD up too far, to avoid performance loss. However I keep seeing different suggestions, anywhere from 50% - 90%. Anyone have any legit answers?

Also I'm mostly concerned with read speed performance (games), write not so much.

    Thanks!

The fans spin, the motherboard's EZ debug LED's are not on (though they do quickly blink on boot), but the PC is not displaying anything to my monitor. I've tried re-seating ram, clearing CMOS, trying one RAM stick at a time, but to no avail. The DisplayPort cable is plugged into the GPU. Thanks!

Edit: Well, shit. Turns out I had bent pins, so my girlfriend offered to help fix them (smaller hands, etc.) Long story short, 2 pins ended up breaking :( Oh well, life happens. Guess this is just an excuse to upgrade to a 3600 :) Thank you to everybody that tried to help, and I'm sorry I didn't have a better solution.

Got a basic build picked out for my first attempt at building a PC. Could use some advice on the details.

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 12:49 PM PST

Hi guys, I'm looking to build myself a nice future-proofed gaming PC. I've done most of my gaming on a Nintendo Switch in the last couple of years since my current computer doesn't quite cut the mustard anymore for gaming. Initially, I want to get it up and running just being able to run new titles at 60fps in 1080p, but ideally I want to have the option to upgrade my monitor later to 4k and higher fps without any difficulty.

My budget is in the £1000-1500 range (UK here), ideally towards the £1000 end but not if it's going to force too many compromises.

I have some parts picked out based on the size of case I was thinking of and what parts suited my budget but I could use some advice on extras like case fans, etc. to make sure that it's all going to run smoothly. I'm also not really the slightest bit interested in aesthetics as long as the whole thing looks relatively neat. Not bothered for any fancy panels/LEDs/RGB stuff.

Also, please tell me if anything is going to be way in excess of what I need like the PSU, or if something will be superfluous due to bottlenecks elsewhere.

Parts list is as follows: PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price
    CPU AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor £151.00 @ Amazon UK

Building my first PC in +5 years

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 07:29 AM PST

When I was a lot younger I built a PC at home that just got the job done. A couple days ago I dropped my gaming laptop on the corner of its screen, cracking it completely, and the quote was high enough that I figured I might as well build a new PC.

I'm building off of AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, since it seems in my price range (below $1500 for the overall build) and benchmarked pretty well for any games I'd want to play (Witcher 3 or Total War: Warhammer II). I only have one 500 gb SSD listed, as I have another 256 gb intel 545s SSD that I think should function with this motherboard.

Would love any feedback as I'm still basically a noob when it comes to a lot of this stuff - any place I'm spending more than I need to, or have something that looks really incompatible?

Edit: I'm also trying to maintain a mobo with wifi and bluetooth included, if possible.

Ryzen 7 2700x, b450 tomahawk, 16gb ballistiks 2666mhz, gtx 1050. Making a build for my dad for general dad usage, no gaming. I cant get any display at all when i start it. No boot cycle either. Tried resetting cmos, booting with no gpu and one RAM stick, and building outside of case but nothing happens. Even bought a new board and still the same problem. Thanks for all the help you guys!!! Im download COD, but why is the usage on everything around 10%?

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 02:19 PM PST

Im download call of duty from steam. Its going kind of slow, so I checked task manager and everything is only around 10% usage. Disk does jump up to around 100% sometimes. Other then that always around 10%? is there a setting I missed or something? (not sure if its the right subreddit to post this)

Can I do anything better for ~£1100

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 02:16 PM PST

    Proposed Build: PCPartPicker Part List

Case TBC, probably a mid-tower, hopefully for £75-£100

From my experience I think the combination of a smaller SSD and a bigger hard drive rather than 1, bigger, SSD is better for me. I'm hoping to be able to play a range of games, including new AAA games. Hopefully at high quality settings at a minimum of 60 fps. For my budget of approximately £1100 I think this is a balanced build, what do you think? Any better value alternatives to any components? Am I making any howlers of missing anything obvious to you? Will be buying in UK.

I have a current pc which was bought over 4 years ago and had an old gpu and cpu even for then, I chose the parts but it was built for me so this is my first proper build. I've not branched too far from what I have seen recommended online.

Is Intel Core i5-3470 3.20GHz good enough for 2020?

    Posted: 17 Feb 2020 09:47 PM PST

    My Specs: Intel Core i5-3470 3.20 GHz, GTX 660 OC 3 GB, 2 x 4 GB 1600 MHz RAM

I have played most new titles in 720p medium to ultra. 1080p in mostly in the medium setting. Battlefield V, the game is stuttering all the time (Battlefield 1 runs smoothly). I'm going to upgrade this PC this year. Should I keep my CPU and upgrade my GPU to a GTX 1070 (it would bottleneck I guess), or should I upgrade everything to i5 6th Generation, 16GB DDR4 RAM, GTX 1070 (which would cost more)?

    Intel i7-8700k vs i-9700k

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 10:23 AM PST

i'm starting to put together a list of parts for building a pc, which will mostly be used for gaming. For awhile now i've been wanting to pair the i7-8700k with the RTX 2070 Super but i've seen the newer one advertised on amazon for cheaper (Just over £30 cheaper) so my question is would i be better to go cheaper and get the newer model or stick with what i was planing. I've been watching some benchmark comparisons and the 9700k does better in newer titles.

People's opinions will be appreciated. Plus this is my very first attempt at putting together a build, have no experience in that area as the only pc i have currently got is a prebuilt pc.

    Tweaking my final Build

    Posted: 18 Feb 2020 01:48 PM PST

I've just finished my build, and i'm just hoping for someone to tell me if I could change anything to make it better, or more worth the money. Its built to play on my 1440@144 monitor.

    PARTS:

    Case

THERMALTAKE V200 TEMPERED GLASS RGB EDITION GAMING CASE (Special Offer)

    Processor (CPU)
    AMD Ryzen 5 3600 Six Core CPU (3.6GHz-4.2GHz/36MB CACHE/AM4)

    Motherboard
    ASUS® TUF X570-PLUS GAMING (USB 3.2 Gen 2, PCIe 4.0, CrossFireX) - RGB Ready!

    Memory (RAM)
    16GB Corsair VENGEANCE RGB PRO DDR4 3200MHz (2 x 8GB)

    Graphics Card
8GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2070 SUPER - HDMI, 3x DP GeForce - RTX VR Ready!

    1st M.2 SSD Drive
    500GB SEAGATE FIRECUDA 520 GEN 4 PCIe NVMe (up to 5000MB/R, 2500MB/W)

    Power Supply
CORSAIR 750W RMx SERIES™ MODULAR 80 PLUS® GOLD, ULTRA QUIET (I know this is a much higher PSU than i need, but getting it for future upgrades)

I'm getting a HDD or SSD later on, as this is already stretching my budget, but any small tweaks that would make this build better, but also allow for future upgrades is much appreciated.

    Budget builds for a friend

So I have built two budget builds for my friend one with a gpu and one with no gpu but integrated graphics (so they have an option to get one cheaper and upgrade later) what do you guys think of these two builds?

    Build with gpu https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rCqdGc

    Build with integrated graphics https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZqhjRk

If you guys have any pro tips to make either of these a better budget build please let me know. Also I see that there is only a $140 difference but thats about the best I could get between the two.

    2060 or 1070

Which is better to buy for 1080p144Hz and a ryzen 5 2600

The 2060 is around 100$ more expensive than the 1070 so is it worth it to buy it ?

PS : i will use it just for gaming (i dont stream and i dont care about Ray tracing)
