    Simple Questions - February 09, 2020

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:10 AM PST

I'm 13 and I've been saving up for about 4 months. Today i finally got it up and running, with no problem. It was pretty hard, and at one point I thought i would break the CPU or motherboard when i was installing the stock fan. I wanted to say a massive thanks to all the mods and helpers on this sub, because without them I probably wouldn't have got this far.

    144Hz monitors - downsides?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 06:38 AM PST

I'm planning an upgrade based around a 2060 super, and in a few months I plan to upgrade my ageing 1080p 60Hz screen.

I've been advised that moving to 144Hz makes a huge difference not only in FPS games but just to games in generals.

I'm in two minds whether to also make the jump to 1440p though.

I realise that 1440p 144Hz is the sweet spot, but what happens if the GPU doesn't keep up? If I get a Freesync (dedicated Gsync is too expensive) monitor will a game at 60FPS still look good on a 144Hz screen or will there be issues?

Forgive me if this is a daft question but I'm not familiar with anything over 60Hz!

What are your opinions on Open Box Aerons on ebay? My current chair is seriously hurting my left leg.

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:41 PM PST

I spent $300 on a chair last year and it started hurting me ONE DAY after the return window. And I've tried dealing with it with pillows or foot props but its not working anymore.

I'm seeing some Aerons on ebay for $450-470 open box with 10 year warranties.

    This one and this one.

Considering that's half off retail my first reaction is to impulse buy one but firstly I don't even see a difference between the two asides color so just get the cheaper one yes? And theyve got a 30 day free return window so... it's a no brainer right?

Am I overlooking something obvious here?

I wish ther were brick and mortar stores I could try chairs out at.

Yes I've gone through every chair at multiple staples which is how I got my current one.

If there is anyone who owns a B size- I'm 6'1" with dangly arms. Most chairs pull on my shoulders because the arms are too low. Aby experience to share here?

    Replacing HDD with SSD

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:35 PM PST

So Im going to remove my HHD from my computer, and put in a SSD instead. But I want to make sure I keep my windows License. I dont think its integrated into my computer because I had a different HDD, but it broke, so a computer store moved it from that hdd to a new one, and that is the one im using rn. But I have enough money to buy the Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5 Inch Internal SSD - CT1000MX500SSD1(Z)]. Im wanting to know how to tranfer my windows license to my new SSD. Also, will the stuff i have in my pc rn running my hdd be the same thing needed for the ssd?

I dont care about the data on my hdd

Ideas for an Avatar: The Last Airbender theme PC build

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:48 AM PST

i am planning on building my first PC soon, thanks to this community that has motivated me a lot, so thanks to you guys.

but i searched for it and couldn't find any examples of an Avatar: The Last Airbender themed PC. guess no one has ever thought of building such a PC.

The problem i am facing right now is that i am at a loss of any good ideas for such a PC build. i am really passionate about this show, but not really being a creative guy, i don't know where to begin.

i thinks aang in his avatar mode will be awesome. maybe some way to subtly include the love between aang and katara or his friendship with appa and momo. i did find some really good funkos and do plan on buying one of theme.

i did search online for some pictures that could motivate me and i am linking to some of those pics. if anyone has absolutely any ideas on this please do share your ideas.

i will be using the Antec NX400 Mid Tower Gaming Cabinet case for the build. any suggestions on the case or anything else is highly appreciated.

    Thanks!!

    Aang, Momo and Appa

P.S. couldn't find any good aang and katara pics. if you find any do comment the link.

    5700XT VS 2070 ( 1440p 144hz FreeSync Monitor )

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 11:43 AM PST

Hi guys, I need a little help. So I've decided to upgrade from my R9 290 to either this (5700XT) or this [RTX 2070]( RTX 2070 ). I have a FreeSync 1440p 144hz monitor, so was inclined to go for the AMD card, however I've just read a host of problems in regards to drivers etc. So my question is, is this still a significant problem? And if I was to go for the 2070 would my FreeSync monitor work alongside it? Also my CPU is the i5 4670k, would this be sufficient, or would there be a bottleneck?

Another thing, i've heard new cards will be releasing this year, would it be advisable for me to wait a few months? Thanks guys

My pc can turn on but wont display anything

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 05:54 AM PST

Prior to this, all I did was remove the 6 pin connector to my gpu (I made sure to unlplug power supply, and touch something metal to avoid static) then I put it back in.

The moment I turn on my pc, nothing is getting displayed along with my keyboard and mouse also not lighting up, when the ports are actually working (tested it with my phone charger), I thought it may have been the gpu but the ports arent even working for my keyboard and mouse so im not sure anymore what the problem is.

The gpu seems to be working fine as well with all of the fans spinning and everything.

I dont know what to do anymore, any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Noctua NH-C14S works great with O11 Dynamic

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 04:56 AM PST

I switched to O11 Dynamic for esthetic reasons and I spent some time looking for suggestions on what air coolers would be good for it (I don't want water cooling yet as good kits are pricey). Scythe coolers were often suggested, but apparently they barely fit and might even push on the glass, so ultimately I went with Noctua NH-C14S. I might have gone with Arctic Freezer 33, but I found it later, and C14S is just much more interesting because of the layout. Maybe this post helps someone trying to decide on air cooling in that case.

So, I don't have a super powerful CPU, just a Ryzen 5 3600, but I want a quiet PC and with the Noctua cooler that's certainly accomplished and also it doesn't get much hotter than with the cooler I used in my old case (that thing and that thing, but they're from a local brand that you probably won't recognize).

Here's some graphs (I used OCCT to generate load):

CPU load max temperatures - also tested with the cooler that comes with the Ryzen CPU - that thing is a joke

CPU + GPU load max temperatures - O11 fares a little worse here, but no big deal. Wraith cooler not tested :)

In hindsight, I should've collected some data on idling temps, but I didn't think about it and all I can say now is that I was happy with the temps (and resulting noise levels) before the switch and I'm happy now. I was only grinding my teeth when I had the Wraith cooler temporarily installed - idling temps were 45-50 with frequent spikes to 60 when a background process decided to do something, which caused the fans to ramp up noticeably. Now it's 37-42 with spikes to 50.

    And here's some pictures:

Side view - I think having the heat sink exposed instead of the fan looks pretty good

What I have Learnt From Building My First PC

    Posted: 08 Feb 2020 11:30 PM PST

This is a list of things I learnt that will save first time builders money, effort and maybe learn something.

    1. Watch as many videos as you can about the parts you are getting and read as many reviews about them as possible to make sure you are not getting bad parts
    2. Don't cheap out on a part like getting slow RAM. You will regret it later and spend more money buying a better part than you had previously.
    3. Don't worry about cable management until after you have completed your build . I really wanted to get my computer on and running so I didn't bother cable managing until about a month later.
    4. When building take your time and make a plan in your head of what you want to do first and then follow your plan through
    5. Use PCPartPicker, this is something I only came across this after building my first PC and I think it would have helped me a lot.
    6. Use forums like r/buildapc and LTT forums and ask questions, people will always be happy to help you there.
    7. Watch channels like Bitwit, LTT and Techsource. Watch them build PCs and so when you come to building one yourself it will be easier.0
    8. Decide what your PC is going to be for and build accordingly. If all you need to do is watch YouTube and browse the internet you probably wont need an expensive GPU.
    9. Make sure everything has arrived before building

I hoped this helped any first time builders

    RX 580 or GTX 1070?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:07 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm finally upgrading my gpu and I can't choose between these two.

The ones I have in mind for the Radeon are the Asus STRIX OC (3 fans) and the Aorus XTR (2 fans) both in the 8gb version.

And for the GTX I have in mind the Asus STRIX OC, not the ti version but the normal one with three fans and 8gb of vram like the RX.

If I'm not mistaking, the Radeon has improved a lot thanks to new and better drivers, and I can find both gpus at the same price here where I live (both used) but I don't know if the improvement of the 580 is big enough to compare it with the 1070. So that's it, I'd like to know what you think about each card and which one is the best one. I'm going to play games like Borderlands 3 and RDR2 on 1080p with a Ryzen 7 2700x and 16gb of RAM.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

Building a Gaming PC that will be shared with the family. Plan to order parts in the next couple of days. I included the optical drive because family uses CDs. Left room in the budget for taxes. Wondering if the parts in this build will work well with each other and are compatible. Always best to get more sets of eyes overlooking a list for opportunities I might not see. Case fans for flashy colors and color coordination. Appreciate any feedback! Thank you!

Multi Core question for anyone ?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 02:03 PM PST

I have a 6 core 5820k system with a evga 1080tu hybrid water cooled gpu set up.I had this for a few years and am thinking about upgrading to a intel 9900k or a amd 3900x.

I have nvme, ssd's hard drives and everything else I need basically this will be a mother board ,memory and cpu swap .

My question is how much do all the extra cores of a amd help me with normal everyday use .

I normally have 2 web browsers up with 30 or so tabs , i download a lot unzip, unrar, some times i 4k game . now i know hand break will use all 12 cores. but in everyday computing

will them extra cores do anything or should i got with 9900k and clock it up too 5 gig .

My cpu now is overclocked to 4.3 on all 6 cores .I read a ton and been going over this for a week .

Will either of these give me a quicker faster system for everyday use and if so what do you guys think?

any info on all the extra cores will be great .Also should i just wait but then in a year i may not have the money to do this ...

    Light-Duty Budget PC for Parents

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 01:50 PM PST

My parents are looking to get Win10 now that support for 7 has ended, and they have decided that this might be a good time to replace the hardware too. This will just be for your typical email, browsing, occasional streaming (<1080p) and some old mahjong and solitaire games they like to play. Nothing their old system couldn't handle, but they have expressed a desire for something a bit faster. For comparison, they'll be upgrading from an i3-3250 with 4GB of RAM and a Radeon HD7xxx GPU.

I'm mainly posting this because I've never used an APU or a micro-ATX board before and I want to be sure I'm not overlooking something important. Suggestions are welcome, but I would prefer not to go much higher on budget without a really good reason. All parts are being purchased in the US. Sadly, I do not have a Microcenter nearby.

My dad isn’t letting me build a pc

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 08:37 AM PST

So I'm 13 years old and I earn money by animating and other small jobs. I am saving up for a 500 dollar pc because my laptop is not handling games very well. So I started saving up and I reached my goal. I've been telling my parents about this occasionally but I think they thought I was joking. When I was ready to buy it I asked my dad to drive me to micro center because there was a sale for the ryzen 5 processors. I told my dad I'm building a pc but then he said I already had a laptop. I tried to convince him that I need a pc for other stuff too but he said I could Spend the money on something more of use. I don't know how to convince him and I'm pretty sure he's not gonna let me buy the parts online either. I've been saving up and wanting to build a pc for like all my life so I'm pretty angry that I can't build my pc that I saved up for. Do you guys know how to convince parents.
