    Simple Questions - February 07, 2020

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Don't let worrying about whether or not you got the best deal ruin your PC building experience.

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 04:07 PM PST

Some may not worry about looking for sales and buy their parts immediately, but I think the majority of us spend weeks and even months waiting for the best possible deal on a component.

Don't get me wrong, deal hunting is a super fun part of PC building, but at some point (at least for me) it can almost be obsessive. After weeks of searching, I'll finally buy a part. Then I see it for $5-10 cheaper the following week, and I'll feel awful. I'll debate returning it for the next few days, and sometimes I do, and sometimes I just decide it's not worth the hassle, and I live with the buyers remorse.

I just need to understand that technology is always going to decrease in value. In the long run, (unless you are on a very strict budget) $10 saved on a few parts really won't make that much of a difference.

So enjoy researching components and looking for deals, but don't obsess over saving just a few dollars here and there.

Finally transitioned from a broke dreamer to a slightly more broke owner.

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 06:17 AM PST

After saving for the past few years and searching for sales I was able to put together a mid-range build I'm proud of. Still need to figure out the color scheme for the RGB but that can wait until after the post.

I lucked out on the GPU, bought it unopened from someone for only $250.

    Specs:

    Processor - AMD Ryzen 5 3600

GPU - EVGA RTX 2060 XC Ultra Black Gaming

    Memory - Corsair RGB Pro Vengeance 2x8GB 3200 c16

    MotherBoard - Asus Prime X570-p

Storage - Silicon Power 512 GB NVMe M.2 Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD

    Power Supply - Corsair TX650M

    Case - Phanteks Eclipse P350x

Best Headset For gaming and Music?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 01:12 PM PST

I have seen a post on here before with a similar question, is there a good gaming and music headset (with a mic on it) for a decent price?

    Edit: spelling mistake

Anyone else enjoy the thrill of upgrading and building a pc more then actually playing on it

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:17 AM PST

My best friend has decided he wants to get a pc and it just took me back to when I got my first pc. Ive been explaining everything to him the last few days because he knew literally nothing about pc's and the parts. He went from wanting a basic gaming pc to wanting midrange- highend specs. When I first got mine I just couldn't stop upgrading after my first upgrade. As soon as I got a part , I wanted another. I started with a i5 3rd gen, 1060 and 4gb ram rig and just kept upgrading , I finally stopped at a i7 9700k , 2080ti , 32gb pc because there was nothing I could upgrade that would make a difference . I use my pc for gaming (including vr) and Game development . Since then i haven't upgraded anything. As I'm currently Writing about my friend, I'm smiling because I know he has it all to come. That first sinking feeling when something goes wrong! then the "I'm a genius " feeling when you first build works ! Ah man . Anyway I've reccomended he gets reddit and join this subreddit because it really helped me back in the day . His budget is no more than £1000 for the PC but he still needs to buy keyboard, mouse and monitor.

My pc is literally bugged, AKA good lord help

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:28 AM PST

I'll give the TLDR. Shortly after I built my pc thanks to everyone here's help my apartment building became infected with roaches. After two months of begging our apartment to even send someone to just check it out and then "losing" every request we put in we briefly considered suing them before just abandoning ship. After another month of my pc sitting in storage I finally got my new place all good to go and tried to boot her up. It turned in fine but the monitor said there was no signal. I figured maybe something had gotten jostled around in the long move and opened her up, only to find roaches and lots of droppings on the motherboard.

I'm currently sitting outside with it at a complete lose of what to do. Is there someway to get them out and the droppings, which are probably causing the issue? Or am I just shit out of luck?

Anyways, looking for any help with my literally bugged pc.

Any comments or concerns before I start down this path? I narrowed what I wanted out of a PC after lurking on here, /g/, and some youtube videos.

    144hz???

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 09:14 AM PST

Right now a have a 60hz 1080p monitor seems fine to me. I have a PC I'm going to sell in the near future and have get a little upwards of 300 usd hopefully. I have heard from everyone I ask that 144hz and 60hz is "like night and day". I have never seen one and really don't know if it is worth the 140 or so $ or if I should just put that in to upgrading my rig. Thoughts? Ps: I play mostly Battlefront 2 at the moment

I have a X99 Godlike Gaming MB and and it wont let me change the System Fan speeds. I have water pumps plugged into a CPU fan header and and a System fan header. I can change the speeds of the CPU water pump and when I swap places with the water pumps the one that is plugged into the CPU header work like it should. I have tried to change the speeds in both BIOS and MSI Command Center..... What am i missing?

    CPU recommendations Ryzen 5 2600X or 3600X

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 01:23 PM PST

Looking to build my first pc and would appreciate some much needed advice. I'd love to take advantage of the $80 ryzen 5 2600X sale at micro center for my first build. I would like to play games like r6, modern warfare, fortnite, and apex at 1080p 144fps. Would I be able to achieve that with this cpu or should I go with a better one? I believe it it mostly dependent on the gpu choice but I don't want a cpu that can't handle 1080p 144fps. If it helps I was looking at the Aorus B450 M or the B450 Pro wifi. As you may be able to tell I'm not the most knowledgeable on this subject so help is appreciated; thanks!

Is the 3700x/3800x a worth upgrade from a 2700 for mostly gaming?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 09:37 AM PST

Microcenter is having some killer deals on the Ryzen 3000 CPUs and I'm wondering whether an upgrade from my 2700 would be worth it. I'm gaming at 1440p with a 2080 Super.

Ways to Keep my PC at optimum performance?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 10:31 AM PST

Hi, Pc noob here. I built my 1st $750 pc on January, for those experts out there. What are some ways to keep my ryzen 5 3600, MSI B450 tomahawk Max with Rx 570 windows 10 pro to keep it in shape both in terms of hardware and software? I know enough to disable start-ups and custom install a software as to avoid instaling bundle softwares. Any other tips? Ty in advance

RGB fans on aRGB header. Is it even possible?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 03:01 PM PST

Hi guys,I recently installed my C.M. ML240L and quickly realized that I should have gotten the ML240R. Done is done, I guess.
Is there any way for me to control the colors on the RGB fans when plugged into my aRGB header on my motherboard?
Right now, I am getting light blue light, but Asus Aura is not really picking it up. I was wondering if Aura was just being Aura, or if it really isn't possible.
Any help is greatly appreciated :)

    Dual channel RAM issue

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 02:49 PM PST

I've been having issues with RAM on my build that I assembled a few months ago, originally having 1x8GB, I added another RAM stick so that I could have 16GB on my system, but after plugging it onto the motherboard both my BIOS and OS show up as having only 8GB.

    About

    Terminal

    System Monitor

    BIOS - Status

    BIOS - Overclocking Settings

    BIOS - DIMMA1

    BIOS - DIMMB1

Tested both sticks on a single slot separately and they seem to work, but when I have both of them plugged in I don't have the extra memory. (even though they do show up on the terminal and Memory-Z)

I've updated the BIOS to the latest version (7B84v2D) and it still shows up as only having 8GB Physical Memory on it.

     These are the specs:

CPU: Ryzen 5 1600 (Stock Cooler)

     MOBO: MSI B450M PRO-M2

     RAM: HyperX Fury 8GB, 2400MHz, DDR4, CL15 (HX424C15FB3/8 and HX424C15FB2/8) (x2)

GPU: AsRock Phantom Gaming RX 570 4GB

     Storage: Kingston A400 120GB

     PSU: Corsair CX450

     OS: Pop!_OS 19.10

Feel free to ask for any additional information.

Silly question: Why did the industry go from beige to black?

    Posted: 06 Feb 2020 08:10 PM PST

This is probably a silly question, but I've wondered why the PC industry went from beige to black so quickly years ago. When black PC cases & drives came out, it seemed pretty much everyone preferred black, and now they're all black. If black is a preferred color for a PC, why didn't they just make them black in the first place? And why were they beige for so long?

I actually somewhat miss beige PCs. I always used to think black was probably a bad color for a PC because black absorbs heat, which is bad for a PC. But it seems it doesn't make a significant difference.

    Upgrading GPU

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 02:28 PM PST

Hey, i need some advice. Im basically a beginner at this so I would like some opinion about it.

    First of my specs:

    CPU: i7-7700kGPU: GTX 1070 KFA2PU: VS 650 CorsairCoolingfan: Alpenföhn Brocken 3Mainboard: Z270 pc mateRAM: 2x Crucial DDR4 8 gb - 2133

    I mostly play games like witcher 3, GTA 5, RDR2.Playing in 1080p - 144 HZ

I want to upgrade my stuff without any hardware bottlenecking the whole thing.

I was thinking about getting a RTX 2080 SUPER and maybe get the same RAM so I have 4x 8 gb.Im not really familiar how the CPU will affect the performance and bottleneck the GPU in these kind of games.

Is the PU enough to run the RTX 2080 Super? Is the RTX 2080 SUPER compatible with the Z270 PC mate?

[Troubleshooting] Moving and need to protect my desktop. Ideas?

    Posted: 07 Feb 2020 02:01 PM PST

I have a CoolerMaster Cosmos case. Its massive. I have seen online these airbag things that you punch to activate and then put inside the case and it inflates in order to protect everything inside and keep it right where it's at. Does anyone know what it's called? I have a big move coming up in May or June and itll be mostly a road trip.
