The Pro Display XDR is not dual-layer LCD Posted: 10 Jan 2020 03:29 AM PST Despite many claims by users after the announcement that Apple's Pro Display XDR was using dual layer LCD technology to achieve it's impressive 100,000:1 contrast claims, this is unfortunately not true. https://twitter.com/photogrant/status/1214728021556580352?s=19 When pitted against a true dual layer LCD (as shown above) or an OLED while displaying a challenging test image with small highlights, it's clear the Pro Display XDR is simply a normal contrast (probably 1500:1 ish) LCD with a 500-zone FALD backlight, which results in massive blooming when displaying small highlights. Given this massive difference in HDR performance, I feel the claims made about how good of a value the Pro Display XDR is compared to the cost of dual-layer LCD or OLED professional displays as a HDR display were quite overstated. Hopefully we see other professional display reviewers review the Pro Display XDR in the coming weeks and evaluate its HDR performance. [link] [comments] |
