    Simple Questions - January 10, 2020

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

    Is a 9700k with a 2070 super better then a 3700x with a 2080super in the long run?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 11:48 AM PST

    Hey redditors,

I am planing on building a pc in the next few weeks or soand I will be only, like really only with discord and the game open, be gaming, playing games like witcher 3, planetside 2 and arma 3 (which both love low core count high clock cpus) rainbow six siege, overwatch, escape from trakov and ghost recon wildlands as well as breakpoint). So what I thought of was: Is the combination 3700x+2080super better then 9700k+2070super. And it should seem pretty obvious, but considering that you get better performace for only gaming with a 9700k on the cpu side of things comes the question:Is it worth not buying the better gpu and then having a 9700k that could last for gaming very long so you wouldnt have to upgrade there so you could upgrade the gpu whenever a new one comes out for the next 3-4 years maybe? or is it worth more to buy the (at least for gaming) worse cpu for now because you get a better performance with the gpu, even concidering you need to upgrade both of these parts after maybe 3-4 years? OR will the market and the gaming industry adapt and put out more optimized games for lower clock and ipc and higher core and thread cpus?

And also what would you think if I replaced the 3700x in this post with a 3600/3600x?

I know a lot of questions, but it really confuses me right now because everyone is saying different things about that topic and I dont want to waste any money of course. So thank you for your help and have a nice day:)

Do gamers even need more than a R5-3600?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 12:59 AM PST

I recently upgraded to a R7-3700X / RTX 2080S couple I got for a bargain, but after throwing at it everything I got gaming-wise, I feel the CPU is still way too powerful to be worried.

So I wonder: is there any use getting something better than a Ryzen 5 3600 right now, if you're only gaming? Apart from some niche use cases like very high refresh rate competitive FPS (where people say you need the top of the top R9/i9 CPU to push a lot of frames per second), it doesn't seems that it'll be a bottleneck to even a 2080Ti.

    Upgrading CPU

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 02:23 AM PST

So I recently bought COD Modern Warfare, and i realized, that i should upgrade my computer. Really 100% CPU usage and lagging is unbearable.

Im thinking of switching my Intel core i5 4590 for ryzen 5 2600, which will be running with GTX 1060 6gb.

As for motherboard im thinking of ASROCK B450 Pro4 .

And i should mention also ram switch to Corsair 16GB KIT DDR4 2666MHz CL16 Vengeance LPX .

Do you think this upgrade is reasonable and will there be big improvement in games?

A cheap (approx $250) graphics card for an i7 9700k build

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:41 PM PST

This is my first pc and I'm using it for sound production purposes primarily so the graphics card does not have to be incredible, just reliable.

I have a 1050ti which is obviously being bottle-necked by the CPU. Any thoughts?

Can I use an intel CPU fan with an AMD processor?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 01:43 PM PST

I'm upgrading my build's processor and plan on using AMD but I am currently using Intel and so have the fan to go with it. Will I need to get a new CPU fan or will the Intel one work with an AMD processor?

New build issues - no signal to monitor and power button only turns on, not off

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 01:33 PM PST

    Hey,

First time poster here, so sorry if not the right place! Just build a new pc taking advantage of the AMD amazon sales, how ever when I finished and went to fire it up the monitor gets so signal (tried the MOBO slots and GPU ones), and the power button does not turn off the PC again but works to turn it on. The chassis fans also are not working but assuming this may be as they need to be configured in the bios?

Fans on my cooler and GPU are spinning and the Mobo/cooler are lit up.

Any idea where to start to fault find, I am stumped...

I'm building a computer for a friend and I bought a gtx 660 for a graphics cards. Is it okay to take out my graphics card from my pc which is a i7-8700k with a rtx 2070 to test it? Or will it not work? I know this might be a dumb question for some of you, but I'm just a beginner ok! Thanks!

Money is no object, looking to maximize quality and form factor, ie ideally a modular psu to save space in this smaller case. This is all 2013 vintage tech and I really don't know what's good anymore...thanks!

Need a new PSU for 2070s and 4th Gen i7

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 04:39 AM PST

My brother is in need of a psu. He is thinking of going with 850w, when it's obviously an overkill.

Can someone recommend a good PSU with an appropriate amount of wattage for a system with an rtx 2070 super and 4th Gen i7?

    Rebuilding my old friend.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 12:48 PM PST

Hello people! I just found out that my pc is SEVERELY outdated and I need to rebuild the whole thing. Essentially, everything I have that will work is a chassis.

I have absolutely 0 experience with pc building, except from some youtube "research".

I'm 14 years old, and so my budget isn't very high, around 500-700$ I hope to manage to work up.

So I'm wondering: Where should I start? What are some not too pricey but decent options, and what will I need? How do I go about building my pc, will it be difficult?

Thank you so much for all help you can give, I'm honestly pretty stressed about this.

Need advice on teen nephew wanting to build a PC with a $400-500 budget.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 10:26 AM PST

Good afternoon guys. So I have a nephew who is planning to build his own PC after watching this video.

    Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUjSVW1hj8w Partlist: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/PWtjn7

Will newer games be able to run on it with atleast Medium settings? If you have any suggestions for a better build maybe I can chip in on his budget for some parts. Thanks for the help friends.

To everyone who is upgrading from an AMD graphics card to an another AMD graphics card

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 12:36 PM PST

I don't know if this sub is the right place for this, but if not please do tell me. Now onto the subject. I just upgraded my 580 8gb to a 5700 XT, and I have read an article that there should be no driver problems (post was like 4 years ago, yea I know I shouldnt trust random stuff on the internet). So I went head on in my PC and swapped the cards. Two crashes in half an hour. If you plan on doing something like this, pls dont be as stupid as I was, and learn from my mistakes. Now I am reinstalling Windows and I don't really have much luck with it. (I have installed windowses since XP) I did some sheningans, so if you are interested in it I will edit this post. Thanks for listening to my TED talk.

Is it okay to use the power cable from my monitor to use for my Pc's PSU? Or are these cables are entirely essentially the same thing?

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 12:20 PM PST

These cables as in the cable that i got with my psu and the cable i got with my monitor

the reason why i dont want to use my psu's cable is because its not working half of the time

sorry for wording the tittle so horribly...

Should I upgrade from i7-4790k for gaming.

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 08:19 AM PST

4 or 5 years ago I built at the time was a pretty top tier pc. I7-4790k with a gtx 980.

This week I purchased an rtx 2070s and am loving it. Would I see any significant gaming performance increases by upgrading cpu?

Any recommended upgrades without breaking the bank?

New PC boots into a "fake" non-working bios

    Posted: 10 Jan 2020 06:06 AM PST

I dont know how to better describe the problem. My PC is about 3 weeks old with an MSI b450 gaming pro carbon motherboard, AMD Ryzen 3600 cpu. Full part list in link. Out of the box I had to flash a new bios that was released on 11/13/2019 onto the motherboard to accept the gen 3 cpu. It seemed to work without issue for the first 2 weeks. I could get in as I needed to change some settings. Recently I can't boot into bios. I get this weird alternative bios screen, linked below, that only has 4/6 menu options. If i hit the space bar i can change the system language. If i hit enter on any of the options the screen dims slightly as if I selected or deselected something. If i press ctrl-alt-delete the computer will restart.

I reset the CMOS and i can get back into the bios on the first attempt, but not any attempts after that.

    I am not overclocking it.

Anyone have any ideas with what is going on?

    ASRock B450M-HDV, AMD AM4, mATX, DDR4,

HD Seagate Surveillance SkyHawk, 1TB, 3.5´,

    HyperX Predator, 16GB (2x8GB), 3200MHz, DDR4,

Asus AMD Radeon RX 580 OC 8GB, GDDR5,

    Corsair 650W 80 Plus Bronze CX650,
