This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

    1660 Super is AMAZING

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 01:50 AM PST

Thank you to whomever suggested I get that Graphics Card. For the first time I actually upgraded my Computer (New Power Supply, Fan and Card) by myself. And it works like a dream! No Heat, No Throttle, No tangled cables.

Playing The Witcher 3 on Ultra was certainly a surprise!

    Thanks to whomever suggested it!

Hitting 1-2fps with an upgraded cpu

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 05:50 AM PST

I recently bought upgraded my CPU to an i5-6500, the installation went smooth and everything seemed fine on startup and normal browsing. However, whenever I launch a game, the cpu usage ramps up to 100% and the game runs at abnormally low framerates. I have 8 gigs of ram and an RX 460 2gb, I'm upgrading the card in a few days when the new one arrives. Also core temps are running at average temperatures but running at 100% usage.

Edit: Solved! I'm still not sure what the issue was but I fixed it by switching to integrated graphics, reinstalling drivers AGAIN, and then switching back to dedicated graphics.

First ever build with my son, any help would be greatly appreciated

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 12:47 PM PST

I am looking to build a gaming PC with my (12yo) son. He lives with his mom and I'd love for him to have a gaming PC at my place as well. We will mainly be using it to game with, (Fortnite & Rainbow is what he usually plays) and future use would be if he hopefully gets into design and 3d printing. I'd really like the ability to expand and upgrade as he gets a little older.

So with that in mind, we are looking to budget between $1000-1300 for everything. We both did some research and have compiled a list which we feel is a good start but it's over the budget. Anybody have any suggestions on what we have https://pcpartpicker.com/list/F2gqhg I opted for getting for a low RAM just to keep the costs down, I figure this is the easiest upgrade that we can do in the coming months.

I'm pretty new when it comes to researching for the build so forgive me if I don't have the appropriate information initially, I will update any information requested.

Strange RAM issues with a new gaming build.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 01:13 PM PST

I built a new system a few weeks ago with a B450 Tomahawk Max, Ryzen 3700X, and two sticks of G.Skill TridentZ Neo RAM at 16GB each for a total of 32GB.

Everything worked great at first, but I was getting intermitted crashes every few hours or so. I'm pretty new to this, but I was able to figure out enough to run Memtest86 on each stick of RAM independently and sure enough one of them was throwing loads of errors while the other was perfectly fine. Having read that this RAM didn't need to be a matched set, I RMA'd the one faulty stick and continued using the remaining stick in the interim with zero issues.

Last week, the new stick came and I installed it with no problems at all for a week or so. Today when I returned from lunch and started my computer, the CPU debug light was on and the computer went into a "preparing automatic recovery" loop that I couldn't get out of. Wondering if maybe it was the RAM, I removed the newly installed stick and tried to boot again, but had the exact same issue. Here's the kicker: I then removed the old stick that had zero problems to this point, and moved the new stick into the 1st slot by itself. It booted up with no problems. I tried to put the old stick (that had previously been in the 1st slot with no issues) into the 2nd slot, and once again had the CPU debug light and no post.

Though I intend to, I haven't done another run of Memtest86 yet because the process of diagnosing this frustrated me greatly, but it seems clear there is an issue with the RAM. As I said, I don't know much about this stuff, but is it possible that the issue is with the 2nd RAM slot on the motherboard? Why in the world has it been working perfectly for the last week until now? And why does the old stick of RAM, which had no issues until now, seem to be the issue? That's what makes me think that it may be the slot itself, but again, no issues with both sticks in for the last week until today.

If someone could help me wrap my head around this, I would greatly appreciate it.

SDD - Crucial MX500 or XPG SX8200 Pro or Intel 660p?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 09:08 AM PST

I'm looking for a SSD. I want it to be 1TB. My budget is around 130-200 Canadian Dollars (MAX). I'm accepting suggestions! I am trying to not overpay on something I may not need. Trying to find the sweet spot but if not, I am willing to pay the full price if worth it.

I'm eyeing the Crucial MX500 and the Adata XPG SX8200 Pro, both 1TB. The former's a SATA SSD, the latter is NVMe. They're, here in Canada, at least 40-50$ difference. Which one do you recommend from the two or the Intel 660p?

I have a 2 TB WD HDD. I never (ever) experimented what's like being in a SSD (yeah, I know). So the HDD - SATA - NVME experience or difference, I am clueless about it.

My needs are pretty simple. My 2TB is almost full. It takes me 2-5 minutes to load everything when I reboot (such a pain). I get also constantly kicked out on Rainbow Six Siege during the loading time. My Skyrim 300 mods takes literally 5 minutes if not more to load out.

I am looking maybe to put my OS + my 500gb of games/files on it and leave my 2TB as HDD (backup) of stuff. I just play games most of the time, I don't do any crazy stuff on it. (Mostly a 'pure' gamer)

    Thanks in advance!

    More RAM or SSD?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 02:27 PM PST

Hey guys! Before I go deep into the question here's my build.

I5-4670k not OC'd, I got a bum mobo and it went haywire even slightly adjusting it. GTX 1060 6gb 8gb ram crucial ballistix sport 1600mhz 1Tb HDD Windows 10 Asus z87-c mobo

I built this PC about 6-7 years ago and the only thing I've upgraded was the CPU cooler and GPU. I know I need to upgrade the CPU and motherboard but that won't be for a while, slowly saving though.

I want to either add more RAM or get a SSD for my OS and most played games, which honestly is mostly just WoW and any decent RPGs that come out, how much longer until the new Elder Scrolls title!?!?

I'm leaning more towards aSSD because DDR 3 seems to be getting to that age where it's hard to get a new kit that isn't pre-used, and it will be useless once I finally get a new CPU and mobo. I did see a bunch on Newegg and other sites, $50ish bucks for two 8gb sticks off brand, 800 reviews with 4.5 stars. I only have RAM issues when I have a web browser opened while I'm playing a game but it doesn't get to the point where it starts paging to the HDD and make it scream like a banshee.

The HDD though..... it's so old. Booting up takes about 5ish minutes until fully usable with very few programs on startup. Games take forever to load after launching and even longer until I can play. Not to mention in game loading screens, Skyrim was a bitch about that and WoW is too 90% of the time. I've scanned it and it didn't find errors so I don't think it will drop dead soon, but it's been wiped numerous times since I built it.

What do you guys think? Probably the SSD right?

After 5 Years Looking to Build New Rig

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 01:36 PM PST

About 5 years ago I built the below rig. I'm struggling to play games like Squad, Post Scriptum and Witcher 3 on highest settings (some cases even on medium settings). I'm now looking to build a new rig that will sort me out for the next 3-4 years but I've been out of the PC building game for a little while now and a friend of mine recommended that I hit up here for some advice so here I am.

I have a few questions really, namely:

    1. I'm looking to spend around £800. Realistically, how much more powerful would a PC at that price be compared to my current set up?
    2. Intel or AMD: I've heard good things about Ryzen processors. Are they now the way to go or are Intel still really the market leaders?
    3. My mate has recommended getting watercooling for my CPU when I build my new rig. Is this only for intense overclocking or a reasonable investment for any PC?
    4. I've seen this build on PC part picker: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/guide/cKD48d/great-amd-gaming-build. Is this a solid build or are there any considerations/modifications I would need to make to get the most out of it? I'd probably like to add another tb SSD and maybe a tb HDD for storage on this

I've done fair bit of lurking and I understand that these questions are elsewhere but I couldn't really see a definitive answer on any of them. Any answers or thoughts would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Old Rig:

    CPU - Intel Core i5 4690K @ 3.50GHz

    RAM - 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 799MHz

Motherboard - ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. Z97-A

Graphics - 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (EVGA)

    Storage - 111GB SanDisk SDSSDA120G (SSD) & 931GB Western Digital WDC WD1003FZEX-00MK2A0

Do you guys save the boxes from your builds?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:34 AM PST

Finished my first build recently. Everything is working well so RMA won't be necessary on anything. Now I have a pile of boxes and manuals. Part of me is tempted to save them in case I upgrade and sell but I also really hate clutter and want this stuff gone. The box from the Alienware monitor is the worst. It's got to be 18" x 18" x 24"....for a 24" monitor.

Is there a good reason to save these if I really don't have the room for them?

Beginner RAM question - pic in comments - how do I know which speed my RAM is set at? Says two diff things in BIOS

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 02:32 PM PST

    Here's the image - https://imgur.com/a/J4PkNKd

Ive bought new DDR-4 RAM - with 3200 MHz.

When I go to advanced view in BIOS it says memory speed 3200 MHz after setting the memory frequency in the AI tweaked.

I selected profile one from DOCP too that says DDR4-3200 but as you can see in the picture it still says DRAM status 2133mhz.

so how do I know what's right?

Black screen on “first” boot up

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 02:28 PM PST

Finished pc build last night. Was working fine on first bootup. Went into my BIOS last night and only thing I changed was my RAM speed to what I bought. Didn't have time to plug in USB and do the windows installation media. Plugged in USB today and pressed the power button and no signal on monitor just a black screen. Tried DP and HDMI and different monitor. Also pressing my power button does not turn off my PC.

    Motherboard - ASUS B450f strix

    CPU - Ryzen 5 3600

Graphics card - EVGA RTX 2060

    RAM - G Skill 16G 3000mhz

Will hard resetting have a chance to corrupt something ?

    First Build Since 2009

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 12:13 PM PST

Hi, so as the title states this will be my first build since 2009 and since then I have not really kept up with the on goings of PC Hardware.

I'm trying to build a stop gap PC as I am waiting for AMD's 4000 stuff to drop before making a proper build.

The PC will be mainly used for music production, video encoding, plex and the odd game (prefer gaming on console) so only aiming for 1080/60.

Ideally I wanted this build to cost no more than £500-600 but seem to be overshooting that so if anybody could recommend so cheaper parts and suggest a decent 1TB nvme drive as I know absolutely nothing about them that would be very much appreciated.

So far using PC part picker I have compiled this list of possible parts (already have a PSU and quite a few mechanical drives).

Help with building and finding other options (?)

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 08:25 AM PST

So this is the first time I'm building a PC. I know close to nothing in this kind of stuff, and went to a store to get a kind of a prototype on a paper. I want this to be a gaming PC, probably not for playing games on the highest and best looking settings, but just so they can run them pretty smoothly. The components they gave me were in spanish, and I've tried my best to translate them, except for the codes and numbers. These are the products they gave me:

    - Intel Processor I7 9700 3.0GHZ 12 MB LGA1151

    - Intel Motherboard Asrock Z390 Steel Legend DDR4 LGA 1151

    - DD4 Crucial 8GB 2666MHZ Ballistix Gris(1X8) (2 of these)

    -3.5" Disc WD 1TB SATA3 WD10EZEX 64MB Blue

    - Solid Disc 2.5" WD 240 GB Green 7mm

    - NVidia EVGA GTX 1660 XC Ultra Gaming 6GB GDDR5 192 BIT

    - Case 600W Mid Tower Thermal Take Versa J22 TG RGB (I don't care much about the case, don't mind it having one to no color lights)

So these are the components that were given to me, but you awesome community most definitely have better options. That's why I wanted to ask about this.

I'm under a budget of $1500 only for the PC, the screens and that stuff isn't considered in this amount, but I'd also like some insight on this. I'm thinking of getting two 144hz monitors, and I still have to look for a keyboard.

I live in Peru (everything there is more expensive bcoz they have to send it there from US), and they said this would be a total of US$1258.00. But fortunately, I'm currently in the US, in Tennessee, and am gonna try to get the processor, the motherboard and the graphic card here.

I was also thinking about getting an I9 processor, but I was told this wasn't really necessary. Is this true, also considering my budget? Also, I9 processors aren't available in Peru just yet.

If you could also leave some sort of links to amazon or somewhere I can get these, it would be very helpful.

This is my first time writing a post in this subreddit, and would appreciate any kind of help.

Thank you all in advance, and I would greatly appreciate it if you used very easy words and concepts, because I'm a complete noobie at this kind of stuff. THANKS!

Does 4k 144hz gaming make sense in the next year?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 02:23 PM PST

I'm wondering, are we finally to the point where 4k 144hz gaming makes sense? I'm hearing the 3000 series might be 50% faster than the 2000 series. If that's the case, wouldn't that be fast enough to make a 4k 144hz make sense? I also see the monitor prices for 4k 144hz dropping like rocks.

I was thinking of building a 144hz 1440p build in the next year or two(depending on when new cards come out), but now I'm questioning if I should go 4k. I just feel 4k has so many additional positives(same aspect ratio as 1080p, so better quality for Netflix/Youtube/streams). It also lets you turn off antialiasing, because of the high DPI. And you can use it to watch 4k media(which you can't do with 1440p).

I just don't understand why people are so dead set on the idea that 4k is a bad idea. Here's how I see it.

For games capped at 60fps, 4k/144hz will obviously be better, and will let you use more of your GPU to get better graphics, with the same 60hz.

For games like Rocket league, which aren't graphically demanding, you'll be able to use more of your GPU to get better graphics, with the same 144hz.

For "scenic" games like Skyrim, where more FPS doesn't matter as much, you're going to still have 60+, if not 90+ fps on 4k, PLUS better graphics.

To me, it seems like a no-brainer to get 4k 144hz, because it offers you 4k/144hz for competitive gaming, 4k/60hz for old and FPS capped games, and 4k/90hz for scenic games where graphics matter more than FPS.

Can someone explain why everyone hates so much on 4k?

First Build: Maximizing Price to Performance

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 12:00 PM PST

    Hey everyone,

This is my first ever build (unless taking apart and fixing many laptops my family for my family counts, haha). My budget is pretty flexible, but mostly looking to max price to performance with some degree of future proofing in mind. Use is with primarily gaming, but flexibility for other possible uses. I'm also not in a rush to build, so I'm willing to wait for deals. I just know that my current (non-gaming) laptop needs replacing soon (case breaking apart) and figured I'd build a desktop.

Just wanted some feedback if there's anything I should consider changing. Chose gtx 1660 super and rayzen 3600 with the idea the graphics card could be updated in the future as needed. Things running at medium to high settings at 60fps is great, anything more is bonus. Same idea with the monitor being upgradable, it could become a second screen later.

As far as actual questions: How much does 3000 vs 3200 vs 3600 matter for RAM? Any good keyboard and mouse suggestions also in mind of price to performance?
