    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

My plan was to start hooking up a few more monitors. I purchased GeekPi 7 Inch Monitor strictly for a system information window using Aida64. I plugged it in into 2080 TI using HDMI and nothing happened. I tried a different port and still nothing. I unplugged my Asus monitor and the GeekPi worked. I have verified all ports on my graphics card work and monitors. I assume this is something to do with software but I am unsure. I tried to detect the monitor and I have restarted with all the monitors plugged in. I have also tried the NVIDIA Control Panel and it is not showing up in the Advance Display settings. All drivers are up to date, Version 441.87. I tried a clean install when the new driver came out recently no luck there.

I could try a real fresh install but I wanted to get some advice here.

Any suggestions on a way to fix my problem?

    Thank you -Mayumme

    Utilizing M.2

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 12:06 PM PST

Hi! So I'm about to assemble some new hardware I bought for my unraid nas. I went with a 2700 on a Asrock x470 Master SLI motherboard and I'm trying to plan wisely on how I'm using the different slots on my MB. Since I want to make at least to VMs I need to keep a couple of my PCIE2x1 slots for cards to passthrough but I don't have a huge need for the M.2 connectors.

I'm wondering if I could use one of these adapters with a cable like this on my pcie3x4 "ultra m.2" Would that work? I'm not sure if my motherboard needs an additional controller on the card for those ports.

I'd also be curious to hear any suggestions on how to use the pcie2x2 m.2 port that I also have.

    Thanks for your input!

Troubleshooting GPU Not Being Detected (First Build)

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 01:20 PM PST

    Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list? Consider formatting your parts list.

    PCPartPicker list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6csNp8

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

Hey guys, I just finished my first build and everything is working as expected except for the GPU. No matter what I do neither the BIOS nor the device manager can detect that anything is plugged into either PCIE slot, forcing me to use my integrated graphics instead of my GPU. I cannot interact with the device via windows device manager or the BIOS as it does not exist within those programs, nor can I install drivers, as the driver install fails if you have no GPU detected. As posted above I'm using a Geforce RTX 2070 Super GPU and an ASRock Z390 Pro4 ATX LGA 1151 Motherboard, which pcpartpicker says should be compatible.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I have updated the drivers for my motherboard, attempted to download drivers for the GPU, looked through hidden devices in the device manager, looked through every single tab and folder in the BIOS, removed the GPU and ensured it was fully inserted into both PCIE slots in the motherboard, and attempted a handful of command prompt fixes, all having no effect.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I am currently in the process of sending the GPU back to receive a replacement and may do the same for the motherboard after doing some research into compatibility, but I was hoping that someone may know whether this is a compatibility, software, or hardware issue. I'm hoping that my card is just defective and replacing it will fix it.

    2060 super to 2070 super

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 02:44 PM PST

Hi all. I just bought a EVGA 2060 super sc ultra for 399 from micro center. And I went on their website today and saw this 2070 super. This is a lot less than the 2060 super I just bought. Should I return and try the 2070 super? Or is it a bad 2070 super that's why it was returned. Can I call and ask what is wrong w it? Or should I go w it? Bc if ppl tell me to jump on this I will. Thanks all!

EDIT: Just to clarify I was looking at the open box for $320 or whatever it was

Accidentally touched preapplied thermal paste on H60 AIO, what do I do?

Title- I accidentally touched the preapplied thermal paste on my H60 AIO (2018). Some of it came off, see attached pic. Should I just put it on and it will spread out or do I need to wipe it off and apply new thermal paste?

From Intel to AMD - Any software compatibility issues?

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 10:39 AM PST

I've been considering moving from Intel to AMD because of the higher core counts and hyper threading while having a low TDP. These Ryzen processors have been going for under $200 across a huge lineup and its hard not to be tempted. I currently have a i5 7500 (Quad core).

I use my rig for gaming, streaming, and video, photo editing/rendering (more recent use). My current i5 is finally showing its limits with the amounts of work I'm putting on it.

Should I be aware of any issues I can encounter with any general programs or software if I make the switch to Ryzen? Or will the switch to Ryzen will be the same as any other CPU change?

    CPU Cooler advice wanted

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 10:32 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm looking to upgrade the stock cooler (Wraith Prism) in my current build.

Deciding between the following three coolers:

    1. NZXT Kraken x62 AIO - MSRP $219.99 CAD
    2. Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black - MSRP $149.99 CAD
    3. be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 - MSRP $119.99 CAD

Some considerations: my graphics card is 305mm (12") long and mounted vertically, which doesn't leave a lot of space for the radiator at the front, or a large air cooler above it. I may need to go back to a horizontal mount to make space for a large air cooler, however I might also need to do this for the Kraken since the cablemod vertical mount adds 31mm to the length as well. I've heard mounting the Noctua cooler is much easier than the be quiet! cooler; I'd be willing to spend the extra $30 for easier mounting, but is the dark rock really that hard to mount? I also will move my pc to and from university a couple times a year which might mean an AIO is a better option because of the extra mounting points to the case.

Listed above are the respective sticker prices in Canada, but I'll likely wait for a decent sale before buying. Thanks for any and all advice!

Edit: thank you all for your insight and advice, I appreciate the help. A lot of good points below to help me decide!

    Mobo and Power supply compatibility

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 02:45 PM PST

As mentioned in the title, I was putting part list together and PcPartPicker told me there was a compatibility issue. I will link the list in the comments, but the parts that have the issue are a

"MSI B450 GAMING PRO CARBON AC ATX AM4 Motherboard" and a "Corsair TXM Gold 650 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply" Any suggestions, I'd rather replace the power supply.

I’m pretty sure I fucked up really good.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 02:43 PM PST

Don't ask me to explain how I did it, but I removed my RAM while my PC was in the BIOS, so technically running. I'm assuming I need to suck it up and buy a new mobo?

Edit: I've tried the ram in every slot, all it does is spin for 15 or so seconds and then restart. No video output.

How to connect a 5V 3pin Phanteks Neon RGB strip in 12v 4pin motherboard header?

    Running 2 different graphics cards.

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 02:43 PM PST

Hi, I have 2 GPUs in my system since i run 4 monitors and vr. I had a titan x Maxwell paired with a gt730 for 2 of the monitors which worked fine. I just recently upgraded my main graphics card to a 1080 ti and it booted and worked for about 5-10 minutes and now my pc will only boot with either the 730 or the 1080 ti and not both. Is there a way to get this to work? Thanks.

Roast or Toast Me: First Build

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 02:37 PM PST

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Light Solidworks work and gaming (Kerbal Space Program and interested in other games like The Witcher 3, Modern Warfare, etc).

Also, possibly image processing for astrophotography (resource intensive) and FEA work.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p at 144 Hz. I don't care much to play at Ultra settings (and my understanding is this build won't play most games at ultra) but I want to play at high settings with a good framerate (80+ fps?).

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    $2000 USD

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States

Post a draft of your potential build here.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

    • Keyboard:

      • $120 (Leopold FC750) so my total goes up to ~$1,865.
    • Mouse:

      • I have one.
    • CPU:

      • Any reason to upgrade to a 3700x? I saw I can get one for $300 at microcenter. This would then push me to $1,975 including the above keyboard.
        • The image processing program I use (Pixinsight) uses the maximum amount of cores so it would be useful there but not sure if the increased price is justified.
    • CPU Cooler

      • How is the stock cooler? If it's good enough, at least for the time being, I can take out the Noctua cooler. That said, I want to keep temps low and noise down (when possible).
    • Monitor:

      • Is there any reason to upgrade to a LG 27GL850-B? I think the panel is a bit better but if that's it I'm not sure that's worth the increased price.
      • What about the Acer XF270HU?
    • Storage

      • I will add more storage in a month or so when I have the money. For now 1 TB will be more than enough for me.

Also, I know the RX 5700 XT has some driver issues at the moment. I'm prepared and fine to deal with this if issues crop up.

Thanks for the input in advance! Excited to get this first build underway.

picking a compatible power supply, new to this

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 12:18 PM PST

Hi all, i bought a new graphics card but to use it i need a new power supply (it needs to be plugged in) This is a prebuilt pc by the way, I know there is a rule against questions about purchasing prebuilt pcs but i didn't see anything about asking about upgrades? if this is in the wrong subreddit please let me know, i couldn't find anything aside from this one.

I am looking at pcpartpicker and i entered my motherboard model and the graphics card, so should I be good to go with whatever is said to be compatible? All i've seen is that the motherboard needs to be compatible.

My graphics card: radeon rx 580 8 gb Motherboard: am3+ ht3.0

it recommended a corsair cxm 550 w 80+ ATX power supply.Im pretty clueless with this stuff lol, so would this work or are there other factors that need to be accounted for? If any other specs need to be listed, please let me know.

Building a render farm, is ECC necessary?

Building a render farm, is ECC necessary? If I were to get together a team and render a film, such as Blender's Spring movie, would I need ECC? How likely and to what extent will a memory blip affect the rendering?

P.S. Using Blender to render if that wasn't already inferred.

    Crashing :(

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 10:37 AM PST

Hey folks, got the new pc up and running (poorly). I keep crashing, it may be due to over heating. I feel like ive updated all the drivers but maybe i've missed one.

Anyway , ive got the b450 max mobo, Ryzen 5 3600x, Radeon rx 5700xt , half gig of ssd and 2tb hdd. ( although i dont think the hdd is being seen. Im a bit of a mess here. Today after work , im going to disassemble and reassemble the entire rig to ensure i didnt miss anything in my excitement. I have a feeling i need to do that bios update or something like that. I've been doing research but tbh im a bit behind all the tech wording.(its easy for me to get overwhelmed and feeling like if i do anything im going to ruin something. If it helps im crashing on basic pc things like hangout chats without video and any sort of gaming , including Path of Exile and even some dumb poker game. Nothing i consider to be demanding from the parts i purchased. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've watched a couple of videos on the bios flash but im still not certain i need to do it and also every video ive seen has the mobo being flashed without the processor placed ? and not the video card either. Thanks for your time.

    Should I get a GTX 1660 TI or a Radeon RX 5700, and what should I get for a CPU Ryzen 5 2600 or Ryzen 7 2700

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 11:54 AM PST

I am gonna buy a pc soon, but I was thinking if the GTX 1660TI is more worth, than the Radeon RX 5700 (not the XT version), but I also want to get a CPU and I ran into another problem if I should get a Ryzen 7 2700 or Ryzen 5 2600.

I am gonna play ESports games like R6S, and a few AAA titles. I am streaming and recording, so NVENC is a good thing. I am also gonna edit videos at 1080p 60fps.

    Mobile multi-camera controller/hub

    Posted: 13 Jan 2020 01:26 PM PST

I am putting together a system which will be used to coordinate up to 12 USB cameras in a semi-remote location, so priorities are (in this order):

    • Low power draw, since I need at least a few hours on a 250Wh camping power supply
    • Lots of USB connectivity/bandwidth
    • Small form factor for ease of transport

I am tentatively planning on using the DeskMini A300 with an Athlon 3000G and 2x4GB Crucial RAM (no PCPartPicker because the DeskMini isn't listed there), but I am worried about USB connectivity. Each of the cameras will stream at ~100MB/s so even in the theoretical ideal case I can't put more than 6 on a single USB 3.0 controller. Does anyone know whether the front and back USB on the DeskMini share a controller (I suspect they do)? And if so, is it possible to use one of the M.2 slots to add another controller?
