This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Is it still smart to buy a 144 Hz monitor for very GPU intensive games where you will get like 100 fps maximum on higher resolutions?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:18 AM PST

So, there are some new games being released who are quite intensive. Even with the best, newest videocards (2080 super, 2080 ti) you might not get 144 fps on these. Is it still worth to have a 144 Hz monitor for these games, even if you perhaps might only reach 80 or 100 fps on 1440p?

Do you notice the clear difference between running 100 fps on a 144 Hz/1440p monitor vs running 100 fps on a, say, 60 Hz /1440p monitor?

    What is RAID exactly?

    Posted: 08 Jan 2020 08:17 PM PST

Besides Shadow Legends, what is RAID? I know it's something with multiple drives. Do I need it if I want to run more than just two drives, or does it make the PC think that the drives are one unified drive, or is it something else entirely? Pardon my ignorance and thank you for your time.

Give me reasons to buy a 2060S over a 5700XT!?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 03:28 AM PST

I'm sure a lot of you will say "there is none" but sadly my monitor doesn't have a display port (and the converter cables are rubbish, expensive, or only handle 60hz).... so running a 5700XT would cost me ~200 more as i'd need a new monitor.

The 2070s isn't worth £100 on top of the 2060s is it?

For some reason i feel like i'm building my computer poorly 'cause the 5700XT is so much better. Build my confidence and tell me how the 2060s is still a wicked card!

Is this 20,000 dollar PC legitimate? Did he really spend that much at a Microcenter?

Saw this post on Facebook marketplace - there's no way this guy spent 20k for these parts is it?

Went on holiday, left my PC unplugged from the wall, but with the PSU switch on the back in the "On" position. PC won't start now.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 08:59 AM PST

So yeah... I'm back. After a month of struggling with my PC due to BIOS updates and such (everyone here helped loads x), got it working perfectly just before the christmas holidays. Used it for a week without any issues. Went away on holiday for a week and a half, came back and plugged it back in... but now it won't start at all. Absolutely nothing happens, usually when I hit the PSU switch the mobo and my m&kb light up for a second so I know it's powered... but that's not happening anymore. I unplugged the surge protected power strip from the wall before I left (and flipped it's switch to 'off') but I left the PSU switch on since I didn't see the harm in it. I'm freaking out right now, any ideas? Thanks in advance!

PC won’t stay on long enough to even download windows.

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:44 AM PST

So I finished my first Pc build last night everything went pretty smooth or so I thought. When I start my Pc it immediately gives me a "CPU overheating warning" and then shuts off seconds after.

I opened my case all the way up and put two fans blowing towards the case and I was finally able to download windows but if I remove those or shut the case then it powers off seconds after I turned it on.

I've reapplied the thermal paste multiple times, as well as unplugging every thing and plugging it back in. I have no idea what it could be.

My build is below but I did go with a different case, it's the In Win 101

I'm building my first pc and I need some help

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:04 AM PST

Hello, I want to build my first pc :) I researched a lot and read the linked guides here on this subreddit.

I want to use my pc for Photoshop/Illustrator/Indesign etc. and also for gaming, though I'm not planning to play triple A games (yet!), just some indie games (Examples are Minecraft and enter the gungeon)

I need some help if my build is good enough and maybe you can help me finding better alternatives which are cheaper or more expensive but make a significant difference.

My budget is 1k€, but I also need to buy Keyboard, mouse and Mousepad from this budget

I'm from Germany and the prices in the partpicker list should be €, but I don't know how to change that

Also I'm a complete noob and if I miss something in the list, please tell me! I asked a friend who also has the same cpu if I need another fan but he said the stock fan is fine, but if I need another fan please tell me!

If you need more information let me know and I add them!

    144hz monitor

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 11:03 AM PST

I'm currently trying to get a relatively cheap 144hz monitor that doesn't suck. Do you guys have any recommendations? Note that I live in Italy, so prices are different here than US. I was interested in AOC 24G2, which was €200, IPS 1080p 144hz, but it takes forever to ship so I'm currently looking for other options.

You can also just recommend more than 1, I'll check the prices and see. I just wanted to know whether they are actually decent for the price.

    Thanks a ton!

HELP ME! Ryzen Build isn't giving any image!

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 09:49 AM PST

    I have a Ryzen 5 2600 on a AsRock B450 Fatal1ty K4 with a XFX RX 5700 with 16GB 3200Mhz Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro and a bequiet pure power 11. Drives are Kingston A2000 500gb and a 1TB seagate barracuda.

All fans spin, and all LEDs light up except the ones on the RAM. The PC goes on and off all the time.

YES, I plugged the video cable in the GPU. The display goes from: check video cable to no signal everytime it turns on. The LEDs are blinking btw.

    What to do?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:47 AM PST

I want to upgrade to a rtx 2060, but i really don't know if i can use these pins?

The one in the pc is a 1060 3 gb. There is already an 6 pin the in 1060, but somehow another 6 pin is hanging on it?

I know a 2060 needs more than 8 pins, so can i even upgrade ?

Driver issues for 5700XT fixed yet?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 01:09 PM PST

I've been planning on getting a Sapphire Nitro 5700XT for my rig, but been holding off due to the plague of driver issues the card's been having. Have the problems been fixed yet, or should I wait a few more months?

(Anecdotal "Well I haven't had any problems" statements don't really help much.)

Should I upgrade my CPU + Mobo + RAM or my GPU

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:51 AM PST

I have a 1060 6GB, but I'm still on an i7-4770 with 16GB of DDR3 RAM. This is mainly for gaming/webbrowsing on 1080p 144hz. I've been putting off a CPU upgrade for a while because I would have to do all three at the same time, so I was wondering if now's a good time to pull the trigger on a new Ryzen.

Do i need to change my airflow setup?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 12:31 PM PST

    Hi All,

Last year i built this pc, its so much fun. I did make one mistake, this specific GPU doesn't have a separate controller for the radiator fan and thus its stuck on 50%, even when the fans on the gpu and the pump work harder. This is the stock setup.

Creating a custom fan curve in afterburner does help with the radiator fan but for some reason it pulses in speeds(seems to be a known issue), so never stable. Reading more about this, i should have hooked up the radiator fan to the motherboard fan header. which i am going to do. As i was planning to do this, i wondered if i had to change anything else.

As i have a small form factor case, the options are limited. See this messy picture for current setup.

    Front:

As you can see on the front i have the fans from the aio pulling air in from out and pushing it through the radiator into the case, too bad about the warm air but i don;t have much choice with this radiator and case.

Would it make more sense to mount the radiator first and pull air through the radiator?

    Top:

single radiator pushing air out, don't think any other options are available here.

    Back:

Same as the front, radiator is mounted first and the fan (which i am replacing) is pushing air through.

Switching these to actually pull air through the radiator, would that make more sense? i can't fit in a push/pull configuration unfortunately.

Basically, i am asking if mirroring the fans and radiators on both sides would make for a better airflow?

    Like this setup?

Any advice or feedback is appreciated, thanks!

    kind regards.

    Connecting PSU to new GPU

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 04:02 AM PST

I have recently bought an RX 5700 XT hoping to upgrade my GTX 1060. I have read that the RX 5700 XT requires a 6-pin and 8-pin power connector. I bought my current PC second hand so have no spare cables and the 1060 only requires a 6-pin power cable. Is it okay to buy a third party 8-pin power cable?

My PSU is an EVGA supernova g2 550w

edit: I actually need a new 6-pin pci connector not an 8-pin.

Because of my budget, I'm between those 2 options. I don't know if I should go with a better CPU and worse GPU or better GPU and worse CPU

PS: Because of the country I live in, these are the only options I have

What’s the best way to extend mouse and keyboard for gaming in recliner?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 05:56 AM PST

I would like to game in my recliner on my 50 inch tv when not using my 144hz for comp games at my desk. My chair is about 5 or 6 feet from my tower so the mouse and keyboard cords don't reach comfortably. What's the best way to extend my wired mkb with the least input delay and not having to go wireless? Extend each cord with an usb extension or get a usb hub to plug them into?

Wi-Fi Card issues - packet loss, latency, etc...why?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 07:10 AM PST

Over the years I have mainly been hardwired to the modem, but since buying a new house I have been on a Wi-Fi connection. In the year I've been in this house I've gone through multiple Wi-Fi cards...I am experiencing packet loss and latency issues in games and cant figure out why? The card/adapter will start out fine and work for a couple months and start having problems.

Currently just bought a MSI Gaming Pro Carbon B450, and the onboard Wi-Fi is great while not gaming - but in games I've had a lot of packet loss and latency issues. I swapped out to my TP-Link PCI card and immediately no issues. Before this build I had 2-3 other cards that all seemed to eventually start having these problems. Card would be great and then just seem to shit the bed eventually.

Modem is a Motorola MG7540 on a 75mbps connection through Comcast a suburban area. 5Ghz connection.

Any suggestions? Reading materials to enlighten me?

AMD 280 GPU, advice on upgrade?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 01:57 PM PST

I'm looking to upgrade an older computer I have. I have done some minor upgrades over the years on it like added additional RAM and added an SSD. I'm really looking to upgrade the graphics from my old AMD 280 card, and possibly the CPU (i-5 4460K).

My question is if I upgrade these two things, would I also need to upgrade my mobo, RAM, or even 5 year old power supply?

I'm not looking to get an incredible GPU, just a good upgrade. Same for the CPU. My budget would be somewhere in the $200-300 range for this. Below is what i currently have, can you tell me what would be a good upgrade, and if anything else would need upgrading too?

    Thanks!

Upgrading from X58 to X570 -- Thoughts, Suggestions, What to Expect?

    Posted: 09 Jan 2020 06:12 AM PST

As you can probably gather from the title, I've been pretty much out of the loop with computer hardware for quite a while (assume I know nothing), so naturally, I turn to Reddit for advice (RIP [H]ardOCP). After this trusty D0-stepping i7 920's 11th birthday, it's time to retire her (undervolted for NAS duty or something? I know the tech is old, and without AVX support things will get iffy, but I still have a lifetime warranty on the board through EVGA, so it seems prudent to make use of it for something). So far, I've ordered/have the following:

    • PSU: Seasonic FOCUS PX-750, 750W 80+ Platinum
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master
    • CPU: Ryzen 9 3900X
    • RAM: G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32 GB 3600MHz CL16 (2 x 16GB DIMMs)
    • Storage: 2TB Sabrent Rocket PCIe 4.0 NVMe
    • GPU: XFX Radeon RX 5700 8 GB DD Ultra ordered*, still waiting on stock*; I could cancel and ride out the R9 390 8GB a while longer for winter heat, then treat myself to something higher-tier at the end of next semester/year?
    • Display: Upgrading from an also-ancient Dell 3007WFP-HC IPS to a much newer Dell S3220DGF and a Fully Jarvis arm -- I'm very excited to finally jump to FreeSync UwU (and have something an ergonomic arm can actually handle, the 3007 is a chonky boy). Also available for use are three matching Dell U2311H with cheap monoprice arms, if I can think of a justification for the power consumption.
    • Sound: Onboard or Soundblaster Z depending on sound quality until a proper outboard solution
    • OS: Win10 for now until I decide on a linux distro to VM it from
    • Case: Since I'll be sticking with OEM cooling for now, I will probably just reuse the Corsair 800D until I'm ready to get back into custom loops to silence the build (might as well, since I have an old swiftech MCR320-QP as well as an XSPC RX360 and RX120 (rev. 2) already, along with all sorts of fittings, aftermarket pump heads, reservoirs, etc. from that era).

As far as target gaming performance goes, Apex Legends and GTA5 are currently the most graphically intense games I play, but I'd like to get Red Dead 2. Rocket League and MOBAs are where I'd like to push towards the 164hz upper of the display. Its lower freesync range is 48hz, so as long as performance is above that at 2560x1440 I'm fine, and I'm willing to use a mix of medium-high graphics (depending on game, engine, etc) to achieve it.

Build is happening this weekend or next, depending on the GPU situation. Thanks for any and all input!
