Installing Windows 10- How to de-evil it?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 08:57 AM PST

I just built a new rig. With the tragic phasing out of windows 7, I need Windows 10 for program compatibility.

I don't want analytics, telemetry, ads, bloat, "smart assistants", or anything where Windows will do anything without my consent. Scalped as much as possible, it will only be a slave to run programs that a Linux-based OS can't.

I know there's guides, programs, and bash scripts out there, but where do I start?

    Thank you.

I have recently taken on "Coaching" my Daughters High School Esports team. I've suggested we game on PC's rather than student provided PS4's. I need your help in finalizing the parts list for the schools machines to be built by the students.

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 07:36 PM PST

Update: With the help of MANY of you and some incredible ideas. We have come to this list so far https://pcpartpicker.com/list/MDLJk6 . Thanks to quite a few redditors suggestions and u/ImNylem adding peripherals and keeping the budget close to the original! You guys are amazing and I can't thank you enough for all of the help and suggestions. I will continue to read as many comments and suggestions as I can. As well as post future updates!

My daughter took the amazing opportunity of being a founding member of her schools first Esports team. After their first week, they needed adult volunteers. I took on the roll of chaperone and shortly after became the coach/organizer/fundraiser/all around anything they need, guy. It became evident early on that the current system of having the students bring in their PS4's was not a great idea. My daughters PS4 took a tumble and no longer works and other students were having issues with transport as well.

So. I pitched the idea of joining the PC gaming Esports world. Where, lets face it, most Esports takes place. However, this isn't a huge school and their funding is extremely limited. I pitched the idea of purchasing the parts to build 6 PC's. Five for most Esports titles and a sixth for a backup or for games requiring up to six players. I used to build PC's as a side business years ago and passively keep updated on new tech. So, I'm not 100% sure I've chosen the best components for the best values. I have a preliminary list and welcome any possible improvements for stability and value as well as longevity. Asking a lot, I know.

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/6KTWrV

I would be grateful for any constructive feedback on this list. My goal is to have it last at least 5 years and up to 8 years while remaining competitive with various upgrades along the way. Once I get a finalized list. I can submit it to the school board for review and consideration.

Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate any help you guys may offer me.

PS: Never trust your parents for laptop-buying aid. My dad is an Intel fanboy and bought a now 14 year old laptop just because it had an i7 in it.

Pc random shutdown? Out of ideas? Try this quick and easy solution!

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 11:37 AM PST

Ok so bit of background here. I recently did some cable management work in my gaming pc and after putting my pc back together and updating my video card drivers I discovered that my pc kept shutting down mid game. Usually around the same time after an hour.

Bemused I checked temperatures and discovered they were a little higher but nothing major. So I attempted to re do thermal paste and upped fan speeds. Still no joy.

I then tried rolling back drivers since I remembered I'd updated them recently. I went through about 5 different GPU drivers and the problem still annoyingly reared its ugly head.

Fresh out of ideas and my last option was to reinstall windows. Just before I attempted this I remembered I'd flicked the "ECO MODE" switch on the back of my EVGA G3 550W PSU. I read about this "feature" which supposedly keeps the fan on zero rpm until the PSU heats up at which point it is supposedly to come on and cool down the unit. Turns out this setting is buggy and the fan does not kick in quickly enough to prevent the PSU overheating, thus shutting down the pc.

So I turned the eco mode off, PSU fan back on 24/7....low and behold the problem is fixed! Thanks EVGA (and every other company who uses this "power saving feature".). This solved my problem immediately.

TLDR - If your pc keeps crashing randomly, double check if your power supply has an eco mode on the back and turn it off!

Hope this helps at least one person before making a boat load of unnecessary changes.

What's your experience of going from a really crap integrated graphics laptop to a powerful gaming pc?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:19 AM PST

Has anyone gone from a really crap integrated graphics (or just bad) laptop to a powerful gaming pc?

If you have, what was your experience? Were you thrilled about the things you didn't know you were missing out on? Was it weird getting above 60fps on high settings instead of 30fps on low?

Are you someone who already has the luxury of a gaming pc? how do you feel about people like me who are used to sub 40 fps?

I'm still someone who appreciates 30-50fps on low because I've never gamed on a proper pc. I'm used to what I have and I'm actually scared that once I get a gaming pc I'll forgot about the times (now) I get below average fps because I still have great memories of gaming despite the fps. I'm excited to build a gaming but its weird knowing that I will actually be able to play games on high settings.

It probably sounds like this is a sob story and that I'm crying about my crappy laptop, but in reality I'm happy about what I have and I hope that my current memories of this laptop never die.

sorry for any cringe caused in the process of reading

G-SYNC not working on unofficially G-SYNC compatible display.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 03:44 AM PST

I have an HP 27xq. It is said to be G-SYNC compatible unofficially. I have gone into Nvidia control panel and set my refresh rate to 144hz and enabled G-SYNC. It tells me "Selected Display is not validated as G-SYNC Compatible" because it is not officially compatible. But when I go into the Pendulum Demo I am unable to click on "G-SYNC." When I click on G-SYNC it automatically switches back to V-SYNC.

One more thing to note: I have also set my refresh rate to 144hz in the windows display advanced settings but for some reason it comes up as 143hz. In Nvidia control panel, hovewer, it says 144hz.

How can I make G-SYNC work and is there any indicator in game that can tell me if G-SYNC is activated or not?

I don't see any blood so far but I haven't really taken everything apartIf there is some dried blood would there be any problems, especially in a humid location (San Francisco usually 60-80% humidity). Ive opened my brothers computer up and saw rust one time so I'm worried . ,( Although his room is so humid he has to use a dehumidifier, feels way more humid than where I play and I haven't seen any rust ever in my computer ) My pc turns on and works. I really don't wanna take everything out look for blood and buy alcohol to wash it. Will I be fine even in my location?

    3. Host a Discord bot
    4. Mine Monero during off-peak electricity hours
    5. Anything else that pops up

Provide any additional details you wish below.

This was an absolute doozy -- figured I'd post my story here since I did a LOT of Googling to figure out how to get this thing to work. But, it works!

    Running Headless

First of all, AMD Ryzen CPUs (i.e., not an APU) CAN work in a headless state (i.e., no GPU) as long as you're not expecting to use a monitor. There's some debate about this online, but my build works, so it's possible.

That said, it only works if you have a motherboard that DOESN'T check whether there's some sort of graphical card on POST. Through a lot of angry Googling, I stumbled across this site, which told me the motherboard(s) I had originally purchased for this build would not work. I contacted ASRock, ASUS, and MSI. All of them told me none of their motherboards would work without a GPU -- so just don't ask them. Unfortunately, the only other motherboard I had wasn't on the list at all, so I figured I'd take a shot in the relative dark. Luckily, it doesn't check for GPU on POST (breathe sigh of relief).

So I put together everything for the third time and slotted in that PCIe extender + tiny GPU as to not overload the PSU so I could set up Ubuntu Server. The first time I successfully ssh'd in from my Macbook Air was such a blessing.

    Fitting everything

The In Win Chopin is sick, but it's also tiny. Cable management is hard, and not very many parts of the case are removable (so it's a lot of poking and prodding cables down certain gaps carefully but forcefully to get everything to look pretty[ish]). Also, you have to snap off the top of the housing of the Wraith Stealth cooler (it does just snap off if you pry it hard enough) in order to get it to kind of fit with the case closed. Thermals haven't been too bad though. I've been pleasantly surprised.

    Firewall and Cloud Storage

Anyways, I set up a firewall through UFW and successfully installed NextCloud using these instructions. I transferred an old domain I had over to Google Domains and luckily my router handles both SSL (through Let's Encrypt) and dynamic IP handling really well out-of-the-box so I was able to open up my NextCloud instance for access outside my home network (used this tutorial to make sure my server itself would keep a static IP on my home network). TL;didn'twanttoexplain: Traffic goes: Internet -> Domain (Google Domains) -> My Router -> Forward to Headless Home Server.

    The other apps

Plex was super straightforward to set up, as was the Discord bot (using Discord.js and the 'forever' node package) and the Monero mining (had to write a script + cron to make sure it only runs when my electricity is cheap). The mining nets me ~$4 a month and keeps my living room warm during these cold months /s (also why I picked the R5 3600 -- more cores, fewer watts).

    Stability issues

Anyways, my problems were not over. Everything was running swimmingly except randomly the entire system would lock up (not restart). Stress tests would last random amounts of time. syslog showed nothing. So much Googling. So much fiddling with power settings and core settings (turning C6 off, changing idle power consumption, etc.). Turns out the motherboard just sucks and can't run my 3200Mhz RAM at 3200Mhz for any extended period of time. Turned it down to 3000Mhz and boom. Stability. And trying to remember all the changes I had made before that to undo them.

Anyways, it's been working solidly for the past two days (knock on wood) and now I have nearly 2TB of cloud storage and the other goodies (may look at hosting a Minecraft server, too) for like $8 a month of total electricity costs. Then, minus the $4 profit from mining, minus $20 from not having to pay for any of this stuff elsewhere. It'll pay for itself in like 4 years! Nice!

    Copper Custom Liquid Loop Build

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:01 AM PST

    EDIT: Build Pictures here: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/vtjypg

For my first build since 2010, I decided to make an attempt at minor case mods, voiding warranties, and building a custom water loop. I had never even seen a liquid cooled machine in the wild before, so, naturally, I decided to do it the hard way with copper tubing. After hundreds of hours of research and planning, as well as days of bending tubing and trying to get all the parts to fit in my thermaltake p1 case, it came together and is leak-free.

Some of my bends could use a little touching up but I'm proud of how this build turned out aesthetically and performance-wise. Temperatures are about ~20C lower under than prior air cooling (40- 60C now v. prior 60-85C).

Thank you /r/buildapc and /r/watercooling for all of the help, resources, and inspiration! I welcome any comments or suggestions!

Decided to build my frist PC at 23.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 09:24 AM PST

Hello everyone, after quite some time I decided to build my first own PC (and write my first ever reddit post). Although I study informatics nobody has ever tought me there how to build a computer so I am noob basically. I found some components but I'm not really sure if they fit together allright or my most fear is if I am not investing my money wrong to some overpriced component. I have about ~1000€ budget. Main use would be for gaming I don't plan to use it on any graphic/editing related work. Occasionaly, I plan to stream some games. I want to run my setup with one monitor and maybe later add second one. Last but not least is the fact that I would like to order my stuff from shop/shops within my country, so I don't really want to order components from amazon, etc. So let's start with what I've found:

    • First thing is a GPU. I was thinking going with 2060, but I found out that 2070 has same price in here. Here are 2 cards I am considering: GIGABYTE Radeon RX 5700 XT GAMING OC 8G, 8GB GDDR6 and MSI GeForce RTX 2070 VENTUS GP, 8GB GDDR6 also GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER WINDFORCE OC 8G is the 2060 I mentioned. They are all at same price ~ 433€. For what found out I think the GIGABYTE Radeon RX 5700 XT is the best one as it works at higher frequence than others and has higher number of processors. Correct me If I am wrong.
    • Second thing a CPU. Here I am kind of lost. I definitely want to go with AMD (budget option compared to intel). But I am not sure if I should go with AMD RYZEN 7 2700X, AMD RYZEN 7 2600X, AMD RYZEN 7 2700, AMD RYZEN 5 2600. For first three the price is almost the same at ~145€ and the last one is ~125€. Also I don't know if I want to overclock them because I've never done it and it scares the shit out of me. Another thing related to the CPU is cooler. Am I fine with stock one or do I need buy a better one?
    • Third, the RAM. I've read that I should pick RAM according to frequency so it would work good with my CPU. Problem is I am not sure what frequency is enough/overkill or even too small. I wanna go with 16 GB as I read it's todays gold standard and 32 GB is not needed unless I run some heavy RAM dependent software. I am deciding between these HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3200, Patriot VIPER 4 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 3600, HyperX Fury Black 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2666 - prices are again from most expansive to cheapest and thats like ~78€ for the first one and ~68€ for the last one.
    • Fourth, the storage. I definitely want my OS on SSD and picked WD SSD Blue 3D NAND - 500GB for like ~63€. I don't plan to store plenty films, pictures or etc. in the PC, only games so I hope thats enough.
    • Now trickiest parts for me. First is a mobo. Only thing I know about mobo is that It has to "support" my CPU. Other than that I want it to have 4 slots for RAM's if I managed to add some in far future. For this purpose, I found this one ASUS PRIME B450M-A - AMD B450. According to description it should be good but I am not user if it's the best investment according to other ones. It costs ~79€.
    • Second trickiest part is power supply. Again from what I've read 500W should be enough, but I don't really know what brand is safe to go with. So far I found this one Evolveo FX 500 - 500W which is ~35€.
    • Last thing is a case. Here I am again super lost. Size of the case is no problem for me, I don't really care if it is huge or not. Don't need any fancy RGB lights in there as well. My biggest concern here is that something won't fit, like GPU/mobo. For my build I found this Evolveo T3 case for ~33€.

And that's it, I hope I haven't forgotten anything. Final price is somewhere around ~851€ so there is space to changes or maybe second monitor? Thanks in advance to anybody who is willing to help me figure this out. It's not a small amount of money for me and I don't want to make any mistake with it.

(EDIT) pcpartpicker link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/G627CL - not really accurate because prices really differ and I couldn't find power supply and case which I mentioned above.

Tl;dr: I am building my first PC with ~1000€ budget and I am unsure what components to go with.

My PC doesn't work after replacing the ram

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 11:59 AM PST

I built my own PC a few months ago with a single stick of 8gb ddr4-2400 with the intention to upgrade it later. Later came and I ordered two sticks of ddr4-3000, 8 gigs each. I opened up my PC, took out the ram and put the new ram in only to have it not post. Even after putting the original ram back in it won't post. Nothing gets output to the monitor, even when swapping the hdmi cable out for a vga, no beeping from the motherboard, nothing.

I am running an AMD Ryzen 2200g and an asrock b450m HDV motherboard. I didn't knock any wires or reseat the CPU when i installed the ram.

Edit: forgot to add this, when I turn it on, it lights up and the fans spin but it doesn't post, it doesnt output anything to the monitors

Beginner looking for help for what chips (pcb, vrm etc) I need to put heatsinks on, on an overclocked graphics card with Arctic accelero xtreme IV installed.

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 03:49 AM PST

Hey! So I bought an old Titan X (maxwell) a month back and I've decided I wanted to overclock it a bit. The problem is that it runs a bit too hot with the stock fan, and it's loud as hell. So I bought an Accelero IV cooler.

This cooler replaces the stock cooler, and adds a backplate on the back of the card. The actual cooler makes 0 contact with any Pcb/vrm stuff (I have too little knowledge about this), and I've seen people claim that they still cool the vrms sufficiently with the airflow and backplate, and also that they don't and you need custom vrm heatsinks.

The actual manual for the cooler claims it does cool vrms greatly but I think I wanna be on the safe side an buy some extra mini-heatsinks.

Could anyone please educate me on what I would need to put heatsinks on? Or if you think I don't need to at all. Here's a frontside picture of the pcbs I really don't want to burn my card...

    Thanks in advance <3

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

The PC I built a few months ago has begun to crash to the blue screen of death more and more. It started crashing a few weeks after I got it, but happened rarely. Now, my PC can crash multiple times on the same day. I get a few different error messages when the BSOD appears. Most commonly, "CRITICAL_STRUCTURE_CORRUPTION", which makes me think it is hardware related. My PC just crashed before I made this post, so I checked the event log to see what it said and saw the following message.

This make it seems like it is my CPU, but not sure.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

Took out the RAM and reinstalled, wiped computer completely and reinstalled OS on a different SSD, ran a Mem86 test (but not sure if I understood it right), made sure all drivers were up to date

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I did see an Amazon review for the RAM kit I bought that someone had the same issue where their computer began to crash more and more over time, so think it could possibly RAM related as well

Some days my pc doesn't POST the first time I boot it. The Wraith Prism cooler will light up and some lighting on the motherboard. And the GPU fan starts for 1 second and stop again, and after some seconds start for a second again.

The funny thing is, is if I hold down the power button and press it again, it will boot successfully (most of the time).

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

I reseated the GPU, cables, RAM. I flashed/updated my bios. I only used a XMP profile for the 3200mhz.

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I bought this pc on black friday, so hopefully if I can pinpoint the problem (and not fix the problem), I can still make use of the guaranty.

cpu temps and red light please help!

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 10:29 AM PST

I recently built my first ever gaming pc, and through lots of struggles, youtube videos, and a couple failed bootups, i finally got my baby running. However, when I checked speccy it said the CPU temp is at 109 degrees while doing absolutely nothing. I have the ryzen 7 2700x, msi b450 tomahawk, and the fractal design meshify. The case has relatively good cooling and the stock cooler for the ryzen 7 is also fairly good, I don't think it should be this high at all. Additionally, when I was setting up the LED's inside my case I noticed there was a solid red light that doesn't turn off. I believe its on the motherboard, it's right around the 24 pin amd power plug. I'm quite concerned that I've done something wrong and my PC will stop working. If anyone could offer guidance that would be wonderful, thanks.

    Hi!

I'm trying to build a gaming PC for the first time. I went to PC parts picker and PC Hound in the info page of this sub. Best "cheap" gsync or free sync gsync compatible 2K monitor at 144hz?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 02:04 PM PST

As the title says I'm looking for this kind of monitor to pair with a 2070 super video card. Any help? The GSync monitors cost a lot! The cheapest and best one? I read that the Samsung C27JG56 is free sync compatible and it seems very good to me. Anyone knows if it is also gsync compatible? Also, does this feature matters a lot? Thank you!

    Changing Motherboard?

    Posted: 04 Jan 2020 01:59 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm thinking about changing my mother board to an AMD chipset from an Intel chipset and just wanted to know what you need to do in order for it to work correctly. I know you need to uninstall drivers that are from the previous motherboard, but what do I need to do for it to work correctly? I've heard you need to reinstall windows and If so, how would I go about doing that?
