This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

I installed an SSD in my mom’s computer and she’s thrilled.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:09 AM PST

After finally experiencing the upgrade from HDD to SSD myself this year, it was painful to watch my mom wait 5-10 minutes on a cold boot for her computer to be usable. So I bought her a 240 GB Sandisk SSD (35 USD) from Best Buy for Christmas and plopped it in, and cloned her old drive. The whole process took about 2 hours and her husband was on the verge of freaking out the entire time that I was going to break something.

Now that it's done however, my mom with her basic Dell i3-6100 computer called me at 3 AM to tell me she hasn't stopped using her computer since I left at 8 PM. She said she can't believe how much more responsive everything is now, and even her husband is impressed. But he thinks the speed up is partially because I blew a bunch of dust out of the CPU heat sink.

She said now she might actually shut her computer off now at night instead of putting it to sleep since start up time is just as quick. If a loved one in your life is still using old HDDs, do them a favor and bring them into modern hardware life with an SSD.

Next gift idea, small PCIe powered GPU so she doesn't need to play Sims 3 on integrated graphics.

I new some things would require more pressure than what felt comfortable when building, but the pressure need was on another level

Just took out gpu and re inserted, now I can't get to my main desktop screen

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:35 PM PST

My usual steps, after fully shutting down and power off my pc are to first of all turn it back on. Once it is back on I have to press f1 to enter the bios settings then I press "discard changes & exit. After that I reach the main screen and am good to go but right now when I press discard changes and exit I get a black screen then back into the bios settings? what may be wrong?

Ryzen 5 3600 and MSI B350 PC Mate won't post

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:44 PM PST

I've just upgraded my cpu from a ryzen 5 1600 to a Ryzen 5 3600 into my existing motherboard and can't get it to boot.

Updated the bios before upgrading the cpu to the latest version according to the msi website and the computer booted fine with the old chip.

Installed the new chip and cannot get anything other than the red cpu light appearing on the motherboard.

    Have tried the following:

    Loosening the cooler

    Tightening the cooler

    Reseating ram

Resetting cmos by the battery pins

Removing and reinserting the new chip

Trying to boot with one ram stick attempted in each of the slots.

I'm currently at a bit of a loss and not sure where to go from here.

    System is:

    Ryzen 5 3600

Msi B350 pc mate motherboard with 7A34vAJ bios installed.

    2 x 4gb 3200 ddr4 ram

Zotac gtx 1060 3gb amp! Edition graphics card

500 bq evga 80 plus psu

Any ideas what could be going wrong or what I could do to fix this would be much appreciated.

Apologies for formatting as I'm currently on my phone.

Thanks in advance for any help or input.

Hello! I'm looking to build a hackintosh (and this is also my first time building a PC so apologies if there are any obvious mistakes that I may have missed). From my understanding, I'll be limited to Intel CPUs and AMD GPUs to run macOS and apps more easily. I've picked these parts mainly from checking size compatibility with the cases, the hackintosh compatibility guides, and sales that are currently happening.

Purpose: Web dev work, Gaming (mainly CS:GO, Overwatch, maybe some open world stuff)

    Budget: $1400

    Guides followed: https://khronokernel-3.gitbook.io/catalina-gpu-buyers-guide/modern-gpus/amd-gpu and https://www.reddit.com/r/hackintosh/

    Thanks!

    Can't boot to windows!?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:35 PM PST

I had windows and everything on my ssd and I changed my motherboard to the same model everything else is the same and now my pc can't boot to windows, but it can go to the bios. When I turn on my pc it shows Msi edge logo because I have Msi mpg z390 gaming edge ac motherboard and says automatic correction in progress (maybe a wrong translation) but then it just gets stuck and I can't do anything and I just have to turn the pc off. I tried booting from an usb stick with windows but it didn't work. Do I have to erase my current ssd and reinstall windows? I just built my pc and would want to get gamin'. I think the pc is built right I've built a pc before and I know how to build a pc. It's night now I will get back in the morning.

Thanks in advance hope you understand this long message.

Need help configuring the money-no-object build.

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 12:28 PM PST

So, I've been saving for about half a decade now, waiting to accrue enough for the best build money can buy. I'm thinking of quad 2080 ti-s, 128 gigs of Trident Z 3200, 905 P Optane 1TB, 4 of Sabrent Rocket 4 2TB M.2s, with liquid cooled CPU, GPUs and the RAM.

Now the problem is I'm not sure which processor and mobo to go for. I have 9900KS in mind but idk if the PCIE lanes will be compatible for quad GPU and Optane with the M.2s. PLX has the switches but I'm yet to know how they will benefit my situation here.

I know the easiest way should be HEDT but anything other than 9900K or the upcoming 10900K won't suit my gaming prerequisites owing to their lower base clocks and that most games will take years to utilize cores numbering more than 4 or 6. I'd prefer ASUS mobos but anything else will do too, as long as they're compatible with the components I've planned for.

    Really appreciate any help/suggestions/critic :')

Need some clearance about PC Cabinets

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 10:12 AM PST

    My PC build:

    1. AMD Ryzen 5 3500

    2. Asrock B450 Fatal1ty Gaming k4

    3. Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8GB 3000Mhz

    4. WD Blue 1TB 7.2K RPM

    5. Sapphire Pulse rx 580 8GB

    6. Corsair CX 550 Watt grey

    7. Circle CG 821 Prime

    8. Asus DRW-24D5MT

After a lot of researching I have selected the Circle CG 821 Prime as a cabinet for my build because of some reasons mentioned below:

    1. Comes with 5 inbuilt fans. So no need to spend more money on getting more fans.

    2. Has top, down and front dust-filters. Too much dust comes in my area so had to go with this as must.

    3. Now this is a bigger question of mine that in a case if the usb or mike ports placed on top compared to front or sides, will they be collecting more dust and get damaged easily or its not a concern?

    4. Side panel is transparent, probably acrylic so a little plus point.

    5. Compared to most modern cases, CD/DVD Writer can be installed within the case. Now some might say that this writer is not required now. But I want to keep the option open since I have many games which are in a CD.

    6. Now this is the only case which has all these benefits mentioned above and also comes within $49 .

    7. Don't know much about airflow since this this my first build and YouTube reviews says its good.

If there are better cases within $55. Please suggest.

I am from India. Any suggestions will be appreciated. RGB is not a necessity. I only need performance.

Thak You in advance and a Happy New Year.

Somewhat complicated question about adding another fan to an AIO CPU liquid cooler in a Mini ITX case

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 07:47 AM PST

Hey guys, so I recently build my first Mini ITX pc with some pretty decent specs and id like to improve my temps. Currently im using the single fan from my CPU AIO liquid cooler as the intake, and the fan from my PSU as the exhaust.

I think i can fit another fan on the other side of my radiator, so I was wondering if adding another fan there would help my temps at all. And would the specs of the fan have to be similar to the other fan? Id imagine having a much better fan could create airflow problems. I was thinking of getting a noctua NF-P12 which seems to have way more airflow.

    My specs:

    • CPU: Ryzen 5 3600X
    • GPU: PowerColor RX 5700 XT Red Dragon 8GB
    • PSU: Corsair TX650M Gold 650W
    • CASE: SilverStone Sugo SG13
    • CPU : Thermaltake Water 3.0 120mm ARGB Sync AIO CPU Cooler
    • Fan I was maybe thinking of getting: 120mm Noctua NF-P12 Redux Edition 1700RPM PWM

Gaming PC, first build, no idea what I'm doing

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 09:52 AM PST

This is the first time I'm building a PC for myself and it's a little intimidating. My budget is around 1000-2000$ and I want to be able to run games like Total War or the most recent shooters at the best quality and ideally not have to buy a new PC every five years. I picked parts with a more experienced friend, but I'd like to have feedback and advice before I blow 1500+ dollars on this baby.

    what should i upgrade first?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:32 PM PST

this is my build from 2015/2016 i get constant freezes now when i play graphically intensive games for extended periods of time. (total war warhammer 2, mordhau, witcher3, etc.) i just ordered 16gbs of 3200 ram. now im debating on either a cpu and mobo upgrade, or a gpu one. haven't been able to narrow down the cause of freezing because it doesn't freeze when i run cinebench, time spy stress test, or unigen heaven. and its also unpredictable. gonna run and get a haircut in about an hour, so if i make a decision by then ill probably stop at my local microcenter-type store.

    Ryzen 5 2600 and Bazooka V2

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:31 PM PST

So one of my first posts and I've been lurking on here since I built my first PC. I recently upgraded from a Ryzen 3 2200g to a Ryzen 5 2600. I also bought a used GPU off of a seller that has good reviews on eBay. That GPu being a RX 580 Nitro+ 4G.

After I finished, I do the usual and plug it into the wall and it posted and I was happy. I then went to check, and make sure everything is alright, I found out my ram somehow got displaced so I popped it into place.

Once I popped my ram into place and turned on my PC again it turned on. However when I go to open up Firefox it resets with no input. It doesn't even bring up a blue screen. It's just black. It than loads into windows again, I thought it was odd thought nothing of it. I open Firefox again... it crashes.

That was yesterday and I no idea on what to do at this point. I've done the CMOS, clean install of Windows, checked the pins millions of times. I'm beginning to think I have to replace my PSU or my motherboard.

If you need more information to help me I'll be glad to provide it. And none of these parts have had an overclock applied to them. The crashes have also been as soon as I login, or as soon as the windows welcome screen appears.

Parts: CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 GPU: RX 580 4G Nitro+ (Used) RAM: Team Force 3000CL16 8GB Mobo: MSI Bazooka V2 PSU: Thermaltake 600 Watt

I'll link you the normal picture that I've shown as example so you can watch the diferences. (Problem) Monitor Background Photo and (As it should be) Monitor Background Screenshot

    My PC specs:

    Ryzen 5 3600X OC; 16GB HyperX Fury DDR4 3200MHz; GTX 1660 Ti Dual 6GB OC GDDR6; Monitor: MG248Q

    Solutions I've tried:

Using the DisplayPort instead of the HDMI, clenead both PC ports and Monitor and used DDU to unninstal all NVidia Drivers.

    First time PC build

    Posted: 29 Dec 2019 01:23 PM PST

Been a laptop guy for gaming since ever, so I have no idea on building a PC. Friend recomended pcpartpicker and I made this https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/nFYBvW Most taxing things I would use it for is MHW Iceborne and ultra moded Skyrim but want it to last a long time for future games. Budget is about £2.5 - £3.5k

    Current main parts (I think):

    • Intel Core i7-9700K 3.6 GHz 8-Core Processor
    • Gigabyte Z390 AORUS PRO WIFI ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
    • Asus GeForce RTX 2080 SUPER 8 GB STRIX GAMING Advanced Video Card
    • Corsair 200R ATX Mid Tower Case

Any help on how to improve/change things up would be great.
