GPU prices do not scale linearly with GPU power. Buy according to your needs. Posted: 20 Dec 2019 02:30 AM PST /u/Axelrod777 made the argument that you get the most for your money, the more you spend on your GPU. I agree with them, that the 3600 is currently the best choice for most gaming builds, as it pairs nicely with any GPU from mid range to high end. Spending more on the CPU only helps if you use the computer for something besides gaming. But the power of GPUs does't scale linearly with their price. Spending more has diminishing returns the higher you go. Cost per FPS To show this, I used the Shadow of the Tomb Raider - 1920x1080 - Highest Quality benchmark by anandtech and compared them to the prices of the different GPUs. The result is this scatter plot that shows how much you pay per FPS with different GPUs. 10% error bars to account for price volatility. A RX 570 has the best FPS to price ratio. You pay $2.07 per FPS. A RTX 2080 Ti is worst with a cost of $6.79 per FPS. But the RX 570 is below 60 FPS, so it should only be used in budget builds. The trend line is set to linear, so you can see how much better or worse the FPS/price is. The RX 5700 ($3.13/FPS) and XT ($3.51) get you clearly more "bang for buck" than the RTX 2070 Super ($4.6/FPS). Cost per userbenchmark score point But are the results the same if we use the userbenchmark scores? Mostly, yes. Similar scatter plot, but with userbenchmark scores instead of FPS. Scores are closer together, but RX 570 is still the best value at $2.34 per userbenchmark score point. And RTX 2080 Ti worst at $5.71. Data Here is the data, if someone wants to add further data points or create their own charts. Most FPS per dollar GPUs
Rule of thumb: GPUs with good value cost less than $3.5 per FPS. I only looked at FPS and initial price. Depending on power prices, it may be cheaper to get a more expensive card that uses less power. Edit 1: I updated the Price-FPS chart to make it easier to read. Old version: https://i.imgur.com/071uZQ2.png Edit 2: A comment (which I sadly can't find anymore) explained the other post. Paying $724 (RX 5500 XT + $550 for other components) results in a cost of $13.33 per FPS while spending $950 (RTX 2060 Super + $550) results in $10.24 per FPS. The pricier build has a better value with such a calculation. Though you would be able to find cheaper components for the low end build. For the sake of the argument, I keep the same base price for all GPUs. The resulting chart shows that there is a sweet spot (RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT). Edit 3: Keep in mind that I only used the performance of one game. Others will perform slightly different. And prices fluctuate all the time. Do your own research. Why Price-to-Performance is not a myth, and why interpreting data is important Posted: 20 Dec 2019 06:42 AM PST There's a post that quickly gained traction on the sub, claiming that GPU price-to-performance concerns are exaggerated and that value remains steady at higher build prices. While it's not entirely wrong and I appreciate the insight it gives, I suspect the basic data it presents isn't interpreted correctly, and leads the OP to the wrong conclusion. Essentially, the OP presents a general price-to-performance bar graph (equivalent to the cost-per-frame graphs you see in HardwareUnboxed videos), but with a twist: he's including the full cost of a build in the price calculation, instead of just the price of the GPU. Now, when presenting his results, OP claims that the flattening of the curve for higher-cost builds indicates that price-to-performance remains stable, even for high-end cards often described as having poor value. The problem is, that doesn't seem to be what OP is showing. An easy way to see something is wrong is to look at "expected" trends: since we expect the RX 570 to be a great value GPU, we can expect price divided by performance to be low – remember, this is a cost-per-frame analysis, so lower is better (e.g. we clearly see the better value RX 5700 XT lower than the 2060S, both being at the same price). But that's not actually the trend we're seeing for lower-priced cards – in fact, the RX 570 is at the bottom of the pack. So what gives? Does the 570 actually offer poor value? Or did something go wrong? Well, think of it this way. By factoring in the cost of a whole build into the cost calculation, OP basically added a static offset to cost, since the same (non-GPU) components are used throughout. This skewers our GPU price-to-performance ratio, because when comparing it to a horizontal line, we're no longer asking "if I double the price of my GPU, do I double performance?" but instead "if I double the price of my build, do I double performance?" And since the only part of the build we're actually changing is the GPU, we're going beyond doubling its price to compensate – leading the performance jump on price increase to become larger than it actually should be, in a way that's especially noticeable for low GPU costs. We can confirm this by looking at behavior at either extreme for our offset – small offsets (build cost is low compared to GPU cost) lead to a "normal" GPU cost-per-frame graph, since doubling the price of our build is basically doubling the price of our GPU. Large offsets (build cost is high compared to GPU cost) behave like an inverse function, as the total price of our build barely ever changes, but our performance still grows accordingly. We see this convex, 'inverse-like' behavior in OP's graphs, accentuating in the system+monitor case (which is indeed what you'd expect from a larger offset) – and that's where the apparent curve "flattening" comes from. What this tells us is that factoring in build cost is a fairly strange choice when your only variable will be GPU cost anyways. u/cosmicosmo4 helped show this when he suggested using a scatter plot instead of a bar graph – the end result was identical to what a traditional, GPU-only cost-per-frame plot would have given, just with an $800 offset to the x-axis. Here's a plot (axis inverted) from u/lucahammer to help illustrate. OP's core assertion – that a GPU upgrade will almost always offer a better performance delta than a CPU upgrade – is still true, and I mostly agree. The graph he/she uses just doesn't properly illustrate it. Hopefully I helped clear this up, and let me know if I got anything wrong. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 19 Dec 2019 07:31 PM PST Techies often call low to mid-range video cards like the RX 580 or 1660 Super the best value from a price/performance perspective. This makes sense, considering these cards can run virtually all games at stable frame rates despite their low prices. If you analyze from a cost per FPS perspective, an RTX 2060 is approximately 50% faster than an RX 580, but costs twice as much. This makes the RX 580 seem like an especially good deal. And it is, if you're just looking to upgrade only the GPU, or if it is all you can afford. However, this advice breaks down when you're talking about building a new gaming computer on anything but the tightest of budgets. The graphics card is the most important part in determining the gaming performance of a computer. It will usually be the bottleneck when paired with any modern mid-tier CPU. Even the Ryzen 5 3600 can handle an RTX 2080 Ti, especially at higher resolutions. For proof, check out this video where a 3600 + 2080 Ti consistently outperforms a 9900K + 2080 Super in every tested game at every resolution. Can you come up with a situation where the second combo would beat the first? Sure, but it would almost certainly be a niche scenario, such as playing certain games at a low resolution or on low settings. So now we find ourselves in a world where a 65W $190 processor that fits comfortably on a $75 motherboard is usually bottlenecked by every single GPU all the way up through the $1000+ price bracket. This is wonderful news! It makes our job of building the best PC on any budget even easier: as long as you're building a computer that's primarily for gaming, you should be putting as much of your budget into the graphics card as possible. In other words, if you were considering building a computer with an expensive CPU and your graphics card is anything weaker than a 2080 Super, you should definitely consider downgrading the CPU to a 3600 and putting everything you saved into a better GPU. This will net you better performance in virtually all realistic gaming scenarios, and you won't notice a difference in non-gaming tasks unless you're a very specific kind of content creator who works with extremely intense multithreaded workloads. Too often I see people post or recommend builds with a Ryzen 7 3700X or i7-9700K and then go on to include graphics cards as weak as the RTX 2060 or even the 1660 Super. Or I see people on a budget ask for adivce, and others try to upsell them a premium CPU. Unless you're a really niche user that does a huge amount of CPU-intensive workloads and barely plays games at all, this kind of build doesn't make sense anymore. And I have the numbers to prove it. I have thrown together the following computer build as a thought experiment. It is one of the cheapest Zen 2 builds you can get, coming out to only $530 for everything except the GPU, or $780 if you include the monitor. It's safe to say that even using the cheapest reasonable parts possible, this build would not bottleneck any graphics card in the vast majority of gaming scenarios. Note: As of today the Ryzen 5 3600X is on sale for the same price as the 3600. Everything in this post applies to both CPUs, so I've elected to include the higher-tier part in my analysis. Using this build as a base, I came up with the following graphs that show the kind of price/performance analysis that you often see for graphics cards, but using the entire computer's budget for the "price" statistic, instead of only the graphics card's price. You're paying for the entire computer after all, why only include a price/performance analysis for one part? The "performance" statistic was the user average bench for the card on userbenchmark (I included a disclaimer about my use of this website below). Graph for price/performance without a monitor: Link Graph for price/performance with a monitor: Link As you can see, buying a low- or mid-tier GPU actually is bad value for your money, even assuming you have budget parts for the rest of the system. I could subtract $200 from the budget to simulate getting a Ryzen 2600, 8GB of RAM, and a smaller SSD and the graph would still be the same general shape. It is understandable if someone cannot afford to buy an extremely powerful graphics card, but if you can afford to, don't worry about "bang for your buck", just get the most expensive thing you can afford and enjoy it! Even more interestingly, the often-cited phenomenon of "diminishing returns" when it comes to buying a top-tier GPU is shown be heavily exaggerated. Once you hit the $400 price range, you get what you pay for, all the way up to the top. The price/performance is roughly even. Once you avoid a bottleneck even the RTX 2080 Ti isn't overpriced anymore if you factor in the cost of the rest of the parts. Three disclaimers:
Tl;dr

Machine learning workstation 10'000$ budget Posted: 20 Dec 2019 06:21 AM PST Dear buildapc community, I hope everyone is enjoying their christmas time. For the next year we have been granted a budget for a machine learning (ML) workstation of 10'000$ for scientific purposes. We have some experience with setting up PC builds but this will be our highest-end build so far. We were wondering if this community would have some tips or suggestions on how we can improve this build. Or whether there are some compatibility blunders that we missed. The main usecase will be ML with tensorflow/keras on GPUs and data analysis and simulations on the CPU. The build will run linux (probably Ubuntu) This is our current setup which we could get for 9980$ from our supplier: Some more specific questions that we still have to figure out: VRAM: The 2080 Ti's come with 11GB of VRAM which we would like to pool together to up to 44GB. If this is not possible/sensible it might be better for us to get 2 x NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000 16GB instead of the 4 x 2080 Ti. We do not want to be limited by lack of VRAM. Cooler: the bequiet cooler is rated for 250W TDP. We are aware that the Threadripper puts out 280W. However we didnt find any aircooler for TDP 280W and we assume that this will be just fine. Thanks to anyone who has comments/ideas, Merry christmas [link] [comments] |

Please help. first build smoking. Posted: 19 Dec 2019 03:50 PM PST Hi. I just built my first pc and the I went to turn it on and nothing happened. Unplugged it I noticed the power supply was flipped off so I flipped it on and plugged it back in. My ram lit up but nothing else. So I pressed the power button on my case and lights flashed then I saw smoke. I panicked and pulled the cord out. I don't know what to do. Please help me. Update: making a test bench. Tested all fans and they work fine (idk it was worth a shot) Update 2: everything lights up but test bench doesn't post. No smoke. Any suggestions for why I'm not getting an output signal? It's plugged into the display port on the gpu Update 3: it posted on the test bench. Any reason why it would freak out in the case? Update 4 solved: if anyone wants to hear how big of a dumbass I am, I plugged a fan into a led header. Fried the fan and the fan started smoking. Thank you for all who helped. I rebuilt the entire pc and found the problem. Sorry for making a big deal out of an exploding fan. [link] [comments] |
Upgrading RAM, confused about pricing for two seemingly similar kits Posted: 20 Dec 2019 08:13 AM PST I'm looking at upgrading my ram, and found two kits that seem almost identical, but one's about twice as expensive as the other. They're both G.Skill Trident Z Neo kits, the cheap one is F4-3600C16D-32GTZNC (2x16GB), the expensive one is F4-3600C16Q-32GTZN (4x8GB). Other than one being 2x16GB and the other being 4x8GB, the only difference between them is the timing. The cheaper is 16-19-19-39, the expensive is 16-16-16-36. I expect quad-channel memory to be slightly more expensive than dual-channel, but when I look at at the 16GB version of the cheaper kit (2x8GB) I could still get two of those for about half the price of the expensive kit. Is the difference in timing really that big that they can charge twice the price for it? [link] [comments] |
New gaming PC, 3600/X - 1660, help me perfecting the list Posted: 20 Dec 2019 10:15 AM PST Ok guys, I think I'm ready for a new PC after like 10yrs from the last (originally a core 2 with a 8800GTS, good times). So, what I'm looking for is a mid range machine (around 1000 euros, don't look at prices on pcpartpicker) with space for future improvements, good airflow but not too noisy. RGB, aesthetics etc are not a factor. I've came up with this list and some question if you like to help me: 1) CPU: for around 20€ more, is the 3600X a choice over 3600? I'm thinking more about the better cooler it comes with rather than perfomances 2) MoBo: is the Tomhawk a better choice over the less pricey Gaming Plus? Looks like it has more room for improvements and better dissipation, but not sure if it's worth the difference 3) SSD: 970 Evo plus looks really fast, but I'm a bit constrained with the 500gb; is it a better choice than a larger and slighty slower M2? 4) Graphic card: not much choice really, 1660 super looks a no brainer for me in that price range, gone with the MSI because I've read some reviews and looks quieter but I'm open to suggestions 5) Case: I really like the 750D airflow but right now seems difficult to find at an honest price, if it is still not available I think I'm going for the 540 Air, even if I'm not used to that form factor 6) RAM: nothing fancy, I've choosen some of the cheapest 3200 from the compatibility list of the motherboard. I think I can live with 2x8gb but choose to go with 4 sticks so it will be future proof Thanks for any comment or suggestion [PCPartPicker Part List](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/list/gthzPn) Type|Item|Price :----|:----|:---- **CPU** | [AMD Ryzen 5 3600X 3.8 GHz 6-Core Processor](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/3WYLrH/amd-ryzen-5-3600x-38-thz-6-core-processor-100-100000022box) | €249.00 @ Amazon Italia **Motherboard** | [MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/jcYQzy/msi-b450-tomahawk-max-atx-am4-motherboard-b450-tomahawk-max) | €135.37 @ Amazon Italia **Memory** | [G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/Cf98TW/gskill-memory-f43200c16d16gvkb) | €75.00 @ Amazon Italia **Memory** | [G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/Cf98TW/gskill-memory-f43200c16d16gvkb) | €75.00 @ Amazon Italia **Storage** | [Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500 GB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/TwWfrH/samsung-970-evo-plus-500-gb-m2-2280-solid-state-drive-mz-v7s500bw) | €109.89 @ Amazon Italia **Storage** | [Toshiba 3 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/n2JwrH/toshiba-internal-hard-drive-dt01aca300) | €69.90 @ Amazon Italia **Video Card** | [MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Super 6 GB GAMING X Video Card](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/YC848d/msi-geforce-gtx-1660-super-6-gb-gaming-x-video-card-gtx-1660-super-gaming-x) | €299.89 @ Amazon Italia **Case** | [Corsair Air 540 ATX Full Tower Case](https://it.pcpartpicker.com/product/QXK7YJ/corsair-case-cc9011030ww) | €149.56 @ Amazon Italia **Power Supply** | [be quiet! Any recommendation for a 100-200€ budget GPU? Posted: 20 Dec 2019 12:24 PM PST Ive been loking to upgrade my GPU for some time already since its kind of the weaker points of my pc overall. I do not have a high end pc, but for the most part its: Amd fx 8320 - 8 Core / 16 GB RAM. I actually have a amd r7 360 2GB GPU, i bet it is even considered vintage by how old it must be. Im not into overclock or nothing in particular but im interested in a gpu flexible enough that can do video-editing/game on a more decent level, nothing out of the charts. [link] [comments] |
Having unexplainable issues? Don't rule out your Power Supply. Posted: 20 Dec 2019 08:53 AM PST Some of you saw my post a few days ago detailing my lengthy troubleshooting process of getting black screens on my High end PC, and many of you PMd me with advice, suggestions, and resources to try. First off, thank you for your help. Without it I would have absolutely gone bonkers. For those who didn't see my post, the TL;DR is that I was getting random black screens that I could not diagnose. The GPU appeared to be the culprit, but two RMAs did not fix it, and neither did a full wipe and reinstall of windows, or using other drivers, or many many other options I tried. It turns out that what I had considered my final option was indeed the source of the problem, the PSU. This is my first time having a power supply issue that didn't involve a loud BANG and a puff of smoke with a clear no power, so I had no idea a power supply could cause these symptoms. I simply wanted to write this post to make sure other people can see this. If you are having issues that you cannot explain, don't rule out a good source of power as being a binary state of on and off. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 20 Dec 2019 12:07 PM PST I have a Gigabyte 512GB 2280 m.2 SSD in my pc(Tomahwak Max, rx5700tuf,R5 3600) and the write speeds should be max 1550 mb/s. I only get 10mb/s when I'm downloading. My read speed is good, windows boots up in 5 seconds. I tried reinstalling windows and drivers for the ssd. My internet connection is 75 mb/s. Can somebody explain why my download speed is so slow?? Did I miss something?? Edit: Uhm I see the problem now... I have my ssd configured as an AHCI in the bios. Can I just change it to a RAID mode. Do I need to reinstall windows? One of the most Stress inducing holiday builds. Help. Posted: 20 Dec 2019 11:57 AM PST OK so to the story goes I was finally trying to make a build after a long overdue update of 5 years and finally, i had gotten the money to make a pc. I had gotten all the parts and then was shifted to do an itx build in the phanteks shift case . Everything was set up I had to bios flashback the motherboard since I was using a ryzen 3600x and got everything ready and after som troubleshooting, the pc worked. Although I was using a Red Devil 5700 XT in a mini itx Phantek Shift Case I managed, and I did have driver issues such as sudden shutdowns etc but I was able to fix that by tweaking my 3600mhz ram to a 3533 MHz . However, I had decided to go with a deal on super 2070 which I was able to snatch for 420. However, after hours of troubleshooting and messing around my fat finger caught a damn fan and broke the fan so I had to RMA. Initially, I thought it was because I didn't uninstall the drivers fo the Red Devil 5700 XT but that couldn't be it and I had looked up all troubleshooting methods jumping from subreddit to tech websites to youtube videos, nevertheless, I was not able to find the solution. With Finals around the corner I decided to put the project on hold and would get a cheaper graphics card to test out the problems and work out a solution. Just today I bought a Red Dragon 590 and everything turns on but the display still wont come on to the monitors. This only happened after I removed the Red Devil 5700 XT and tried to install the 2070 Super. Alas, installing the 590 did not seem to accomplish anything so given the nature of this case it comes with a pcie extension so i looked at the pcie slot of the motherboard , the b450 i, and I think I found 3 fried pins on the bottom right. As stupid as this question sounds, is this the issue? Do I return it and order another one, are the rest of my components safe? My graphics cards fans are running but that may just be the fact that power is being supplied to it. TLDR: Wanted to switch my graphics card, was working fine before now that I wanted to switch I found something odd on the pcie slot ( fried pins?) . Help. Stressful build as a student. Troubleshooting with b350-f motherboard and ryzen 7 3700x Posted: 20 Dec 2019 01:54 PM PST Today I installed my new ryzen 7 3700x into my b350-f motherboard and as soon as I installed it I checked to see if it powered on and all the lights including the fan lights turned on, but two of my Fans would move very slightly before going still. My GPU fan would spin, but I could only power the computer off using the power switch on the psu and the power button on the case only worked to turn on the computer. It would also not display anything on the screen. I believe the issue has to do with the current bios which is incompatible with the current cpu, Might there be any other Issues I might be missing after that? Is there a place where I can go that will update the bios for me like Best Buy or something? Is there another issue that I might be missing? [link] [comments] |
What Gpu would I need to validate buying a 27" 240hz 1920x1080 moniter? Posted: 20 Dec 2019 01:47 PM PST I currently have a pair of 980's in SLI and I have a 27" 60hz IPS 1920x1080 monitor. I'm wanting to upgrade to a 240hz monitor, but I'm not sure if my current setup will be able to handle higher fps especially with my limited 4GB of vram. Any thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Do DVI to VGA adapters work properly? Posted: 20 Dec 2019 01:42 PM PST I just installed a GTX 1050Ti in my PC. My monitor (Acer V193w) is really old and only supports VGA. The 1050Ti doesn't have a VGA slot and only has a DVI, HDMI and one more that I can't remember (it isn't VGA though). So I just ordered an active DVI-D to VGA cable (it hasn't arrived yet) and was wondering whether these actually work, I've seen mixed reviews everywhere. I also wanted to know whether or not they'll affect response times or colour quality and stuff on my monitor. My final question is whether or not you guys think or know if this specific one works. Thanks! DVI-D to VGA cable - https://www.amazon.com.au/Friencity-DVI-VGA-Adapter-Converter/dp/B079MD7CWF [link] [comments] |
I'm almost done deciding on all my components. Just looking for dummy checks. Posted: 20 Dec 2019 01:39 PM PST I've changed my components hundreds of times and decided to increase the amount I'm willing to spend. I'm building my first PC to play AAA games like Borderlands, Destiny 2, etc. on my 4K TV. I'd love to know if I'm missing something. (Like XXX won't work in this build for whatever reason, or XXX MOBO is a better choice because YYY.) All advice is appreciated as I'm super new to the PC world. Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Thermal paste, how thick is too thick? Posted: 20 Dec 2019 01:39 PM PST I used thermal grizzly Kryonaut for the cpu, i used the same paste a week prior to reaply paste on my laptop if that matters. I just applied the usual recommended amount (a bit more i think) and it seemed like it was pretty thick, i tried moving it around a bit and it seemed pretty stiff or resistant. Is that bad? When i went in to the bios after completing the build the cpu temperatures where around 25-30c . [link] [comments] |
What kind of compressed air would you recommend buying to clean a motherboard? Posted: 20 Dec 2019 01:31 PM PST I'm going to buy some compressed air tomorrow so that I can remove metal shavings off of my motherboard. I want to do a good job and to make it safe for me and from short circuiting. Is there a specific product/strength that I should look for? Anything else that I might need? Thank you!
