This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

If you're wondering why your GPU is running hot....

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 06:33 PM PST

...make sure your exhaust fans are plugged in and actually exhausting...

Don't ask me how I know this.

EDIT: CASE exhaust fans. Sorry for any confusion. Also, the card is still running pretty hot, but I guess that's just a feature of the 5700 XT. And no exhaust fans certainly wasn't helping anything.

    I'm so happy gamers!

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 10:44 AM PST

Thanks so much for you'r help guys! I upgraded my ram and cpu today and it went as smooth as butter !

All temps are fine and RAM is running at 2933 mhz!

These upgrades have really helped my pc out, for example MW now runs at 100-110 fps instead of 50-60

    My upgrades were : Ryzen 5 2600 from Ryzen 3 2200G and 2x8gb 3000mhz Corsair Vengeance from 1x8gb 2400mhz Team group

Once again thanks so much for your help guys!

First PC build and not impressed - have I done something wrong?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 12:21 PM PST

    Hey guys!

I've finally splashed out on what seemed like a really good 4K or at least 1440p 60fps gaming PC. Built it separately, sourced the parts from a Youtube Vid and using Part Picker, etc.

It runs Counter-Strike at 70fps average but that's about it. Everything else is sub 50fps - Destiny 2 gets 15fps, Shogan 2 Total War gets 20fps on the overworld/map screen. Apex Legends around 20fps too. I don't get it - getting better performance from my Xbox One X... The desktop experience as well is stuttery (loading Chrome, opening Steam, clicking the start menu takes 3 or 4 seconds to start.

Also, went through Max, High, Medium, Low settings with Destiny 2 and Shogan as well - just High, Medium and Low with Apex, and frame rate did not change. Temps are not changing or acting differently. Also tried changing resolution from 4k to 1440p and then to 1080p and literally can't get above 30fps.

    So, Specs;

i9 9900K 3,6ghz 8 core (have pushed this up in the UEFI to 4.8GHz but results were the same as stock - literally no improvement on overclock on the above fps I mentioned)
Asus ROG Maximus XI Hero (Wi-Fi)
64GB of Corsair Vengeance RGB PRo (4 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 (I have put this into XMP)
Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB M.2 (Windows 10 Pro is installed here as well as some launchers and software)
Samsung 860 EVO 4TB SSD (all games are installed here from Steam, Gamepass, Origin, etc.)
MSI GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB Gaming X Trio (Not fussed about overclocking this but put it up slightly to see - nothing changed again)
Corsair RMx 850W 80+ Gold certified PSU.

This is plugged into an Acer X27 Predator - I did have the screen set to the overclock 144Hz but thought this may be affecting things so tried it with just the standard display setting and no overclock - believe it's at 4k 60hz.

Cooling and temps - I have a Kraken X72 liquid cooler and 7 fans (inc the 3 with the liquid cooler) in an NZXT H700i case. Stats and temps using CPU-Z, HWin, GPU-Z and NZXT CAM all read that the CPU is hitting 4800mhz, there's sufficient core voltage (1.250 approx), CPU does not go above 45c (around 30c idle) and Graphics Card under 'load' is around 60c, around 40c when idle.

All drivers, Bios update, latest windows updates all installed.

The youtube build shows gameplay of R6:Siege at 240fps+ I just want stable 60fps at this point!

I have tried searching around and can't seem to find this exact issue and at a loss of what to do now. Around £3,000 for a system that is basically struggling to output what my Xbox One X can. Something must not be right 😂

Any help really appreciated - was really happy I turned it on and everything worked, booted up, it was great. But it's like a potato struggling to open up the start menu.

    The 144Hz rabbithole

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 04:44 AM PST

Sooo I just bought a new 1440p 144hz monitor, but didn't really comprehend the performance I would need to run 144FPS on mah games. I would like to know which upgrade route I should go to get at least 144FPS on medium settings. I have tried to overclock my CPU and GPU, but since I'm incompetent it just ends up crashing all the time.

Looking at titles such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Forza Horizon 4, Assetto Corsa and other soon to come tRiPlE aAa TiTlES. Also editing in Adobe Premiere Pro with 2.7k footage from my GoPro.

Current specs: Intel i7-4770K 3.5GHz EVGA GeForce GTX 970 4GB (OC I think) 32GB (4x8GB) Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz Corsair RM750 I think. (It is a 750W power supply though) All games on a couple fairly new SSDs

Thanks in advance for any enlightening information 🤙

    Builders, be careful out there

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 01:01 PM PST

We all know that a new build requires a blood sacrifice, so I got a higher-end case that has almost no sharp edges buuuut unfortunately the case arrived with glass fragments/dust with no damage to the case itself.

I took an hour to fully disassemble the case (it breaks down real nice) and vacuum the glass, and it's good as "new"! No parts to install yet, but my first thoughts are that it has poor QA since there's broken glass packaged with a case, and another ding to QA since the top cover is extremely difficult to get back on (which is probably related to the glass explosion).

Explain to a noob how BIOS updates work.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 05:21 AM PST

So after a month of picking parts, waiting for them to arrive, painstakingly spending 4 hours putting it together, screaming at the heavens when it doesn't boot for 4 days, taking it apart multiple times, fretting over possibly having broken something, debugging for hours... It turns out that my B450 Aorus Elite Motherboard does in fact NOT natively support my Ryzen5 3600 CPU (despite it saying so on their website :) ) So my question is; what is the bare minimum of a cpu required to update my motherboard BIOS to be compatible with my 3rd gen ryzen? Can I use any AMD CPU released before mine? Or does it have to be Ryzen? Thanks in advance. I've gone to 3 different PC shops and none of them can/want to help me. One of them looked at me like I was an idiot even.

    Is a Ryzen 5 2600 with an RX 590 good for 1080P 60FPS gaming ?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 10:49 AM PST

I've seen a lot of benchmarks and some games were just at 65~62 FPS, like Doom or Halo Reach having a lot of drops going under 60FPS. Maybe it's the guy who made the benchmark's fault, or it is the system. So is a Ryzen 5 2600 with an RX 590 good for 1080P 60FPS gaming ?

    I'm derping with motherboard/case compatibility.

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:56 AM PST

So I'm using the MSI B450 TOMAHAWK MAX ATX AM4 Motherboard.

I'm also using Fractal Design Focus G Black ATX Mid Tower Computer Case as the case, however I've been going through my build to make sure everything fits, as I don't want to order it and have to wait another week or so to get the other part/waste money.

Could anyone tell me size wise, if this does fit? From my understanding the motherboard is 1inch to big length wise.

    5700XT alternative?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 01:45 PM PST

I was about to order a Sapphire Radeon 5700XT Pulse but have been told and been reading about all the driver issues. Now , I've got horrendous luck so I know I'll have issues.

Is there a N-Vidia or equivalent or one slightly lower ? I've been thinking the 5700 is overkill anyway

    Thanks

Just built my pc,i don’t know what to do next (more like in what order and how )

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 05:09 AM PST

Hello,i just built my pc after months of working

    Here's the spec :

    1. Cpu:Ryzen 2700x

    2.Mobo: X470 Aorus Gaming 7 wifi

    3.Gpu: Asus gtx 1070ti

    1. Ram: Trident Z rgb

5.Power : Be quiet power supply 600w rated silver

6.Storage : 2 512gb ssd (one samsung and forgot the brand of the other one )

I am bit lost on what to do now : Update the bios first or windows 10 first (obviously i guess it's the drivers last ) and i don't know exactly how to do it and in what order (and how do you access the Bios )

Do i even need to update the Bios ?

Did i outdo it, or am i doing it wrong?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:42 AM PST

Hey guys, i'm running a r7 1700 (3.8oc atm) on a b350 gaming 3 for the past couple of months already, but i've always been concerned about the RAM timings on my PC. always had problems with the XMP profile.

    I'm using the Corsair CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 (2 sticks, 8 gigs each, 3000mhz)

i just saw a YT video (LTT) about some program called "DRAM Calculator for Ryzen" so i thought 'why not give it a shot?'

so i've looked online, downloaded something called "Thaipoon burner" to get some info about my ram and input it correctly, and i don't know if i'm running the sticks better than what they suggested, or if it's worse.

    there's the RAM info:

    http://prntscr.com/qa0ktj

but these are my settings (RED for the 'recommended', blue is what i'm running right now):

    http://prntscr.com/qa0lmd

i remember i read over here on reddit about someone who managed to run the same ram & motherboard as me on CL14 and gave it a shot. it worked properly, so i left it as that (put 14-17-17-35 instead of 15-17-17-35)

should i switch to the recommended settings by the program? are the settings i'm running right now any better than what's recommended? am i killing the system in the last 2 months with these settings? any recommendations from the pros on here would really help me out. (sorry for the english, not my main language)

    thanks!

    Recommendations for a upgrade bundle?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 12:53 PM PST

My pc is getting old, and I would like to upgrade it. And I don't want to switch out all of the insides, just the stuff I really need to future proof it. I would like a raytracing graphics card, and a good CPU (maybe some new ram) for $1064. If you need anymore info, feel free to ask.

Edit: my current computer is from 2015, with a gtx 960 and a Intel i7 4790

    Good 1080p/1440p monitor under 350?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 11:09 AM PST

I have a Ryzen 1600x (Upgrading to 3600 soon), GTX 1080 and 32gb of ram. I'm not sure if I should get a 1440p 144hz or 1080p 144hz since I'm not sure how many frames I'll lose to upgrade to 1440p. I play halo reach, escape from tarkov, cs:go and a lot of shooters so having less input lag is ideal and more frames too. Vesa mount is a must.

Basically, what's a good monitor under 350$ whether it be 1080p or 1440p that has nice colors and 144hz minimum?Especially one that is known for reliability? I'm willing to also go to 240hz as well.

    Thank in advance!

    No Signal to Monitor

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 12:39 PM PST

Hello, before I start, here are my specifications:

CPU: Intel Core i5-9400F 2.9 GHz 6-Core Processor

Motherboard: MSI B360M PRO-VDH Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

    Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 8 GB (2 x 4 GB) DDR4-2666 Memory

Storage: ADATA SU630 240 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive

    Storage (2): Toshiba P300 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Video Card: PowerColor Radeon RX 570 8 GB Video Card

Case: Cooler Master MasterBox Q300L MicroATX Mini Tower Case

Power Supply: Cooler Master MasterWatt 550 W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply

Not sure if this is TMI, but anyway..

I just finished building this PC, it's my first ever build and I'm pretty happy with it. I press the power button and everything appears to be in order, the fans turn on and the motherboards LED lights up.

However, I check my screen and see that it says "No Signal".

Now the first thing I thought of was that well, my CPU doesn't have integrated graphics, and my HDMI cable was plugged into the CPU, so I thought that was the problem. I plugged my HDMI cable into my GPU. Still, no signal.

Now when I check my GPU while my PC is on, I notice the fans aren't running. I'm not sure if this is a sign that it's not working or if that it's one of those cards that don't turn on the fans unless you're doing some intensive.

I've tried plugging out the GPU and plugging it back in, plugging out the PCI-E port, unplugging it from the power supply, and I can't seem to get it to show any video.

I should mention that I'm not using a proper monitor, atleast I don't think. I'm using a Hanspree TV because I don't have a monitor that supports HDMI or DVI. Not sure if this would have anything to do with it.

Thanks for reading, hopefully some of you can help. Sorry if I'm doing this wrong, this is my first time here.

New build for photo editing and light video - Will my storage plan work

    Posted: 12 Dec 2019 12:28 PM PST

This is an updated parts list to a post I made a couple of weeks ago based on feedback and some additional research. Trying to stay under $1k if possible.

Will be used mostly for photo editing with Capture One and Affinity Photo. Would like to get into doing time lapses with DaVinci Resolve, but my current machine can't handle it. No gaming.

Storage plan is to put the OS, programs, and actively being worked on photo/video files on the m.2 drive, and then store all my "archived" photo files, music, movies, and run my plex server from my current computer, which has about 3TBs of storage in it.

    Any thoughts are appreciated

Edit: I know I could use Windows free with the watermark, but for reasons I need to have a legit copy. I might be able to cut the Windows cost anyway, b/c I think I still have a valid Win7 license buried in my desk somewhere.

Hey everyone, longtime lurker here. I've been gaming on a FX-6300/GTX 750 Ti for the last four years, and it's not able to keep up with the game I want to play anymore (Modern Warfare, Apex, Battlefield), so it's time for a substantial upgrade to my PC. I'll be mainly using this keyboard for streaming games like Apex, Battlefield (basically games needing lots of processor and GPU speed). I'm hoping to not have to upgrade the PC for at least four years. My big concern is with reliability. I don't want to have to do crazy things outside of basic maintenance just to keep it alive. I'm open to suggestions, and my budget of approx. $2,000 USD. Lower is better (obviously). Thanks! u/psykowxlf
