    Simple Questions - November 29, 2019

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 04:11 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

How dangerous is it to apply a water cooler onto a system?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 10:37 PM PST

My mom's trying to convince me that applying a water cooling system is the equivalent of holding live uranium. Can anyone tell me the true logistics to the dangers of water cooling? It's going on an i7-9700.

Anyone else wish they could build their PC again, just for funsies?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:24 AM PST

Sometimes I feel like taking my PC apart and putting it back together, just for fun. But, doing so is kinda pointless other than that, and I can really only do so much, since the CPU and cooler would need to stay in tact, since removing the CPU cooler would scuff up the thermal paste most likely. But, I've always wanted to sort of buy some cheap PC parts, and build a cheap gaming PC for fun

    Full build parts ?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 06:32 AM PST

Hey guys I came across this post in a promoted post and there is a "complete build" listings and I was wondering if they are good options ? I have been lurking here for couple of days and I am still not sure what works well with what and the redditor seems to know his stuff about laptops but he is not active here, I am looking to mix and match between his 800 and 1500 build to make a decent build in 1100~1300, how you would go about doing that ?

How is this Black Friday build for Cyberpunk 2077?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:22 AM PST

It has been a while since I built a new PC, so my time for a new one coincides nicely with the upcoming release of Cyberpunk 2077. I was hoping to keep the cost lower than this, but I'm willing to push it if these parts will really be a lot better and last me longer than the next step down. I am also going to be checking prices for Black Friday/Cyber Monday to hopefully score better deals.

Do you guys see anywhere I can make cuts? I may drop down to a cheaper case, but I've never had a "flashy" PC before. Will the stock heat sink and those case fans be enough cooling, or do I need to invest in a better CPU Cooler and more fans? I'm willing to cut back on the CPU and/or GPU if you think lower ones will allow me to run Cyberpunk 2077 well at Med-High settings (I know we don't know requirements yet).

    Thanks for any input!

~$1200 USD gaming build check before ordering

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 09:28 AM PST

Could I get a review of this build I've been recommended? Buying in US online. Mainly using for 1440p high FPS (> 60fps, but not necessarily 144fps) for e-sport titles (Dota 2, PoE) games and casual use.

    Justification:

    • 3600X was only $5 more than the 3600 so I went for that.

    • The added CPU cooler and case fan is because I deliberately asked for lower noise levels.

    Concerns:

    • SSD: Better choices for that price point? I've heard recommendations for the Kingston A2 and Sabrent Rocket. Even WD Black...

    • Any incompatibilities?

    • Any other things I could improve?

    RX 5700 or RX 5700 XT for 1080p 144hz?

    Posted: 28 Nov 2019 10:36 PM PST

Edit: Bought the Nitro+ RX 5700 XT

I mostly play E Sports title and some AAA Games (would be fine if settings are on high and it runs on 144 FPS because I would cap it for Freesync). Coming from a R9 390 8GB Strix OC. Which model should I buy? Can get the XFX 5700 DD ULTRA for 299 or the THICC III for 399. I don't know if the performance gain is that much for 100€ difference.

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

1440p gaming at 144hz, with the intention of buying a Valve Index and getting back into VR down the road.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

1440p at 144hz, high or ultra settings would be nice but I am fine with medium settings.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    My budget is around 2000.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    The United States.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Thanks everyone who helped me build!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:34 PM PST

I built a new gaming PC for my son. I had some issues with the MSI B450 Tomahawk, had some questions on what to buy and in two separate threads, a bunch of you folks gave great advice!

The boy is currently rocking on his new Machine and loving the performance gains.

Ryzen 3600X MSI 570 edge mobo 16gb Corsair 3600 ram MSI RX 570 8gb VC Corsair Carbide Air540 case

Upgrades will include 16gb more ram, NVMe drive and newer video card.

I fell in love with the Corsair case. It made wire management so easy. If you have the room, I can't recommend it enough.

And while prolly overkill, the Corsair H100v2 water cooler... it's keeping everything cool and quiet.

    Again, thanks!!!

Custom build for office: self build or system integrator?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 11:44 AM PST

I'm between 2 options for my work rig.. build it myself or buy from a system integrator. My desire to go towards an integrator is all about optics. If something goes wrong it's their issue. My work is all Macs so convincing them that I need a Windows machine (which I legit do need for my job) was tough enough. My brother is pushing me to custom build myself, which I completely understand, I just don't want something to go wrong and them to come down onto me. I understand I can save a ton building it myself over buying prebuilt. However I'm not certain the savings over a system integrator like iBuyPower or cyberpower is worth the risk. What are your thoughts?

Desktop for mainly linux use with windows gaming on the side, all AMD or AMD cpu + Nvidia gpu?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 10:42 AM PST

I'm planning on building a dsktop mainly to use with linux but also to install windows for gaming/streaming on the side, so my question is, is it better to go all AMD or AMD cpu + Nvidia gpu? My budget is around 1700 dollars but I could stretch it to 2k is it's worth it.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for.

What does it mean to update a bios for a cpu?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:39 PM PST

There is a x470 board that I'm interested in using for my 3700x, but I hear reviewers say that I will have to do a bios update or ask the manufacturer to do it for me. What does this mean, and how would I do it? Is it a problem? How do I ask the people at amazon to update my bios? 😂

So I managed to convince my parents to buy my niece a Desktop instead of the cheapo $300 laptop the get her every other year. She plays all the Gen Z hottness; Roblox, Fornite, Minecraft and also Skyrim. I'm not up to date on the low end stuff but using logical increments as a guide I put this together. They pitched in $500 and I'm pitching about ~$200 and building it.

when you first built your pc, what was the easiest and hardest thing to figure out?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2019 01:23 PM PST

for me, heres my opinion: the ram itself was the easiest, followed by the cpu. rhe ram was kind of hard to get in fully since it would get stuck or whatever but it was easier after taking it out and reputting it back in. the cpu itself (not including the fan) was also the easiest as it's just line up the arrow and put it in.

the hardest would be the front panel connectors. I dont know why but literally every. single. build. guild. doesnt. go. over. these. I had to check my manual and figure it out on my own because for example, bitwit's guide is literally just him plugging it in with no real explanation or actual close up, meaning I couldnt even tell where he was plugging it in. for the most part following the mobo manual is more helpful than any guide I could find and it frustrated me the most that no guide really went over front panel connectors in depth.
