    Simple Questions - November 25, 2019

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:15 AM PST

This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Have a question about the subreddit or otherwise for /r/buildapc mods? We welcome your mod mail!

    So Happy.

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 05:42 AM PST

After getting out of the military, losing everything, being homeless for years... to a friend giving me an old laptop he didn't use and trying to play CSGO @ 30fps... finally getting a pre-built Dell from a local shop with my tax refund... to having my own place, nearly done with my first semester of college... and the cherry on top - my new PC I built myself (it had been years!). I'm very proud of this.

I still need to upgrade the video card which I got on deep discount to fit my Dell's PSU.

I went through tons of posts, reading people's opinions and ideas on builds since it had been a long time since I had dealt with PC parts. Just wanna say the knowledge and helpfulness on this sub is pretty impressive.

What is the point of an expansion bay for a computer?

    Posted: 24 Nov 2019 11:34 PM PST

I'm looking over PC builds and I see that having an "expansion bay" is an option for a case. Can anyone explain what exactly an expansion bay is for? Would it really be necessary for a computer used mostly just for gaming?

    Thanks!

If I get a 2TB SSD, should I still get a second, smaller SSD, just for a windows install?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:32 AM PST

Will the games on the 2TB SSD slow down Windows and boot times like with hard drives or is that not an issue anymore with SSD's?

Edit: Thank you everyone, I appreciate all the help

Hello everyone, so I just started a club at my university for PC building and all the topics surrounding building PCs. I created this club because I was inspired by the awesome communities here on Reddit and because I love building computers. The only problem is I feel like I will run out of topics to discuss in club meetings. This is why I am asking for help, please leave ideas for lectures, topics or discussions for my club below if you would be so kind. I will be giving presentations weekly on topics that you suggest! Our club is already 28 members strong and growing, so please help us out with educating and inspiring a new group of PC builders! Leave your suggestions below! Thanks!

[PC Build] I want to buy this PC before the Black Friday sales end. And I don't have a lot of experience with PCs. Are there any changes that would be better for this build?

For the budget of the build I would like to keep it nearly around 1100-1200 without the monitor.

Looking to improve the gpu and storage specifically

    I haven't built a PC in 12 years...

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 10:09 AM PST

And I have never built a dedicated gaming rig. Now I want to build to build a VR capable gaming PC from the ground up. What do I need to know? My budget is flexible but I really just don't know much about what components are any good these days and what I really need vs what is extra (i.e. Intel vs AMD, water cooling? etc...)

    Thanks for any replies!

I seriously need help with a gaming monitor

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 04:03 AM PST

I have looked around so much that I'm back to square one for some reason. My requirements are: 1080p, 144 - 240hz, adaptive sync (see point below about input lag), TN panel.

I want to buy a gaming monitor for online multiplayer games. My PC can push 200-240 frames in most games so I was looking at the 240 Hz monitor but some folks suggested that I'll be wasting money if my PC can't push 240 at all times.

So then I started looking for 180 Hz monitor but they are on the same price range as 240Hz so what's the point. This brought me to 144Hz and I see the following options:

    1. VG248Qe. This seems to be least expensive but people say there are much better 144hz out there. I wonder what are those
    2. BenQ XL2411P. This is a bit more expensive.

Then comes the discussion of having adaptive sync. Some articles say that it induces input lag but others argue that those articles were written 4-5 years ago and currently the gsync technology induces minimum lag.

I'm seriously depressed because of the information overload. I just wanna buy one gaming monitor that gives me lowest input lag and doesn't produce tearing... Anyone help please!

Time for my every half decade build!

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

    Hello everyone!

I like to build a PC every 5 years or so. I use the PC exclusively for gaming. I recently bought a 1440 144hz monitor. It hurts my old computer and makes it cry. So it's time for an upgrade. If like to run most things at that 144 fps if I can. I'd also like to run VR on this system as well. My budget is around 1100-1200 usd ($1500 Canadian). I'm happy with my old case. I don't usually overclock anything.

    Part picker link: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/NwfMvW

My few questions would be: 1. I get a warning about the mobo and cpu. From what I understand, if I get the max, it should be comparable with the new gen of ryzen? 2. How do I install windows these days? Last build I used my dvd drive 3. What VR set would you recommend? 4. Any suggestions for improvements or areas I can save a bit?

    Your help is much appreciated!

    Best PC / Game-station Desk?

    Hello All,

I am looking for a decent small/medium sized desk that can support my Mid/Small Sized PC, Xbox, and switch without looking cluttered. I am not sure if such desk exists (that isn't custom made).

Idea of the type of desk I like:

    RTX 2070 Super for 144Hz at 1440p?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 07:18 AM PST

    Build Help:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes!

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Gaming. My last build was in 2014, with an overclocked i5-4690K and GTX 970 that I eventually SLIed. I enjoyed being able to OC the card in the last two years to eke out some longevity.

I don't really need the RTX nature of the RTX 2070 Super. I'm really looking for 100+ frames per second. It's also hard for me to pick which manufacturer's RTX 2070 Super to get (or a manufacturer for an alternative card). Based on comparisons, I think the Gigabyte Windforce 3X makes sense, but a friend always loves EVGA and is trying to talk me into that.

I'm primarily playing Destiny 2, Cities: Skylines, Factorio, and F1 2019 at the moment. I don't have a VR headset. I don't care about RGB effects; my case is solid and under my desk anyways.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

I'm looking for 1440p near-144Hz gaming with high settings. I already bought a ROG Swift PG279Q two years ago, and my 2x GTX 970 cards just don't give it the frames that I want. I'm planning on re-using my case, my CPU cooler, my PSU, and my peripherals.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

~$1500 CAD. I don't buy often, so I'm willing to find a little bit more for the right parts.

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    Canada

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    PCPartPicker Part List

    Type Item Price Thoughts
CPU AMD Ryzen 5 3600 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor $279.98 @ Amazon Canada The R5 3600 is only 6 cores instead of the 8 on the 3700X, but they seem to be the same other than that. The 3600 vs 3700X was $240 CAD vs $410 CAD.
CPU Cooler Scythe Mugen 4 79 CFM CPU Cooler Purchased For $0.00 I don't know if I can reuse this. If I can't, is stock okay?
Motherboard Gigabyte X570 AORUS ELITE ATX AM4 Motherboard $245.28 @ Amazon Canada I was choosing between this motherboard and the Asus TUF GAMING X570-PLUS. They seem really equivalent. The Asus can support faster RAM, though.
Memory G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory $184.78 @ Memory Express These seemed popular on PCPartPicker. This motherboard only supports up to DDR4-3200 speed RAM, according to the manual.
Storage Samsung 840 EVO 500 GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Purchased For $0.00 My current boot drive
Storage Intel 660p Series 1.02 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive $156.78 @ Memory Express The Samsung 970 PRO is obviously the best nvme drive, bu the 660p is so much cheaper. ($420 CAD vs $140 CAD).
Storage Western Digital Caviar Blue 1 TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive Purchased For $0.00 My current storage drive for my user profile and lesser-used Steam games.
Video Card Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER 8 GB WINDFORCE OC 3X Video Card $749.28 @ Canada Computers I think that the 2070 Super is where I want to put my budget if I want 90-110 FPS at high settings, based on reviews and other builds. I have a friend who is trying to talk me into the EVGA, but I don't really know the differences.
Case Rosewill THOR V2 ATX Full Tower Case Purchased For $0.00 It's suffered some damage over the years, but it still holds together. Great cable management, great dust prevention.
Power Supply Corsair Professional 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-modular ATX Power Supply Purchased For $0.00 Is reusing a 5 year old PSU okay?
    Optical Drive LG UH12NS30 Blu-Ray Reader, DVD/CD Writer Purchased For $0.00 -
    Monitor Asus PG279Q ROG Swift 27.0" 2560x1440 165 Hz Monitor Purchased For $0.00 -
Keyboard Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate Wired Standard Keyboard Purchased For $0.00 -
Mouse Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum Wired Optical Mouse Purchased For $0.00 -

    PC Build - Critique

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:47 PM PST

Im building a PC for gaming, video/photo editing and streaming and would like feedback on my component selection. I don't plan to overclock but wouldn't mind having the option. I currently play LOL and WOW but want to play Final Fantasy XV. I know the power supply is overkill but figured I might upgrade the GPU one day and need extra juice. I will be using two 2K monitors and like to stream videos on one screen while playing games on the other. I have some room in my budget spend another $300 or so but don't want to overspend if I don't have to.

    CPU: Ryzen 7 3800X

Cooler: Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4

Motherboard: MSI MPG X570 Gaming Edge WiFi

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB)

Storage: Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 1TB

GPU: GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2070 Super Gaming OC 3X Windforce Fans

Case: Fractal Design Meshify C - Compact Mid Tower

    PSU: Corsair RM850

    I have several concerns:

    1. Will this case comfortably fit these components.

    2. I'd like to make it as quiet as possible - not sure if an air cooler or AOI cooler is better for noise.

    3. How is this mobo? I picked it based on the number of positive reviews.

    Monitor decision help!

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:38 PM PST

I have been buy parts for the last three months and finally will be building this up coming weekend but i can not decide which monitor I will be wanting/needing,

I will be playing R6 and pubg mostly and also using it for work; I will be running a 3700X and a RTX 2070 S

I have the options of getting the following Dell monitors:

    • 27 in AW2720HF
    • 34 in AW3420DW
    • 32 In S3220DGF
    • 27 in S2719DGF

I am mainly contemplating the differences between and or if I'll even notice the differences of 1440 VS 1080 and 1 ms VS 4 ms

Should I be looking at a different brand of monitors? was wanting to stay IPS, at or greater than 27" because that's what I use at work

    High quality case fans

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 07:28 AM PST

    Hi all

What's your favourite brand of reliable case fans?

I've had a few makes over the years, seemingly all generic cheap ones, the sort you'd pay £5-£10 for.

I've never been impressed with any in particular but have never gone with a more expensive brand either, as I'm not sure what brands have reliability and good value.

What's your favourite for reliability, quietness and lifetime? (120mm)

    Ryzen 3600 issues

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 01:18 PM PST

Recently I noticed that task manager is reporting my CPU running at 100% no matter what. HWiNFO shows that it isn't running at 100%, but does match task manager for speed (4.18GHz). This all started a few days ago.

I have done a reset keeping data and a full reset with no luck. I reset the BIOS to default settings, and and have tried switching between the Ryzen Balanced and Windows Balanced power plans.

AMD Chipset drivers are up to date as well as windows.

Temps are around 50c (according to ryzen master) with not much going on.

    Any suggestions would be great!

What do you think of my build? $400 or so budget mainly for esports games and fps maybe

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 06:10 AM PST

So I've read a few subs and articles from different parts of the web and here's what I built from what I learned(?).

I really need that graphics in the cpu since I will still be saving for a gpu which Im planning on adding in the future (idk how soon is that) but Im planning on building my pc around christmas or january.

I have two builds right here and I am thinking of just upgrading so Im thinking of a solid build already for the mobo.

    Anyway here they are:

    2080 x Zen 5 2600, Will it clog?

    Posted: 25 Nov 2019 12:50 PM PST

    So, if nothing else, title.

I'm currently in the market for a number of things, and with my new job and paycheck I can actually afford it. So I'm thinking for Cyber Monday/Black Friday, I'm just gonna say screw it and grab a 2080 and a lovely monitor.

Now here's the question I have. I have a Ryzen 5 2600 in my current rig. He's OC'ed and god damn is he just a little trooper. I've seen a number of reports saying that the 2080 doesn't bottleneck at all with the 2600, but I'm curious if anyone else has any first hand experience or references.

    Thanks for the help!

After gaming on consoles for last 15 years it was time for me to make my way back to PC. Used to play mainly FPS and RTS games like Halo, Counterstrike Condition Zero, Age of Empires, LOTR Battle for Middle Earth, Runescape, all kinds of games growing up. Then focused on console to play with my friends. Now everyone moving to pc and cross play available I thought it was time for me to get back to my roots. Plus with pc you can play just about any game, better quality and mods.

I could of gone with a Prebuilt like when I was 10 (29 now) but what's the fun in that? After a few weeks of watching youtube channels like LTT, Paul's Hardware, Bitwit, and Tech Deals and reading through the forums I decided to go for it. I started with messing around with Pcpartpicker.com and userbenchmark.com trying to figure best value to performance without sacrificing too much.

Then the biggest question of any PC, AMD or Intel? Just recently the new 3000 series ryzen chips were released and was beating the Intel chips at price and performance. Also with AMD didn't have to worry about having to pay more for unlocked chip to OC and comes with stock cpu fan.

Over the last 2 months i searched high and low for deals. Only thing I paid retail price was my motorboard for $195 at bestbuy. Couldn't find any deals for it besides the in store deals from Microcenter but nearest one is 500 miles away from here in Orlando, FL. Gpu I got a steal, I managed to pickup a lightly used MSI GTX 1060 GAMING X 3G for $50 this was just temporary to finish build to setup and start playing. I was planning on going with an 5700XT, 1080Ti or 2070 Super depending what I see on sale next few months. Case, I originally was looking at the fractal design meshify c but for $40 cheaper I went with focus g, still good airflow from reviews but also has more room for future upgrades. I might be able to build my own PSU basement later but I built this more focused on performance vs looks.

Putting the pieces together, after all the videos and write ups I've gone over it became an ease. Stock cooler was frustrating to get all 4 screws just started but after fighting it for 30 min I finally got it and was able to seat the cooler properly. Only other issue I had was figuring what power cables will be needed and where each case, fan and power wires go on motherboard. After studying the owners manual on the motherboard it became clear.

Boot up, I turned the power on. We have life then it went dark... got nervous, but then it rebooted and everything came up on the screen. Right off the start I updated the bios and installed Windows pro. In the menu I could see my 3 case fans and cpu fan reading aswell as my memory and storage. I was able to select a profile to clock my ram to the 3600 speed, was able to clock cpu to 3.95GHz. I immediately brought all my fans to max speed to see how much noise they'd make if needed, they were so quiet I left them at the high speed 1200rpm to keep my temps down since the noise isn't much.

All in,$700. Prob an extra $400 for my gpu upgrade. Yeah I could of saved bunch and gone with a b450 board or Sata SSD/Hard drive but these are the parts I chose based on performance, ease of use, and future upgrades. Looking forward to buying up all my games during black friday.

    SEE YOU ON THE BATTLEFIELD!
