This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post. Examples of questions:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a GTX 1070. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case < $50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

Important: Downvotes are strongly discouraged in this thread. Sorting by new is strongly encouraged.

Tonight Is My Last Night on an FX-8320 Build...

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 05:09 PM PST

Tomorrow, after work, going to frankenbuild.

Swapping my CPU, MOBO, RAM out from FX-8320 on ASUS M5A99FX Pro r2.0 with 1600 MHz 16GB DDR3 to go to a Ryzen 7 3700x with a MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX and 3000 MHz 16GB DDR4. Also got a spiffy Arctic Freezer 34 eSports Duo cooler for my Ryzen. Going to run it all on 700W with my GTX 1070 finally getting the workout it deserves until I get something better in a year or two. Also obligatory Samsung 850 EVO SSD reimage incoming.

Overall, I am drinking to a PC that got me through for 5 good years but is time to retire.

11/22 Update: Some people have been recommending, or wondering why I didn't go for, 3600 MHz. When I shopped around, and checked forum and article posts both, the common consensus was that a lot of people were running 3000 MHz to 3200 MHz as the "sweet spot" range for gaming with the Ryzen 3's. Plus, I figure the MOBO will make it easy to OC the RAM from 3000 MHz to 3200 MHz. And considering it's my first DDR4 build, I figured I was already going to see as much of a gain on RAM performance as I would on CPU performance coming off of the old build.

If anyone wants to provide tips or recommends on the OC process for the RAM, to see if I can do 3200 MHz or better, go for it :) .

GPU does not fit motherboard, what are my options?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:54 PM PST

I recently upgraded my PC. My motherboard is an MSI B450 Mortar Max. Part of the upgrade is me fitting an Arctic Accelero Extreme IV to my FE 1080ti. It was a last minute decision really, I was supposed to water cool it via G12 bracket and an NZXT Kraken.

I did remember to check if the Accelero would fit my case (Corsair Carbide 275R) length-wise, but I did not realize that my gpu was fed with McDonalds because it's now twice as fat as before.

Now, I can no longer fit the gpu in the first pciex16 slot because the audio jacks of the motherboard are blocking the heatsink of the gpu. Fitting the gpu in the second pciex16 slot doesn't work, because it doesn't recognize my gpu.

Am I SOL? Do I have to buy a new motherboard that would fit the fatter 1080ti? What are my options?

I want to erase everything on it and have it be my new storage for games. Do I just delete the partitions on the old and make a new one? I'm confused.

M.2 Question for a new PC build.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:17 PM PST

Over the Black Friday/Cyber Monday weekend I am thinking of changing out the guts of my current Gaming PC. The only stuff I am going to reuse from my old setup is my GTX 1060 6GB, 1080P monitor, 2TB Firecuda HDD and peripherals. I plan to do a GPU/Monitor upgrade next year. This is my buy list https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hRRPV7

The question I have is around M.2 Drives. I want to have 2 SSD in the system, one system boot drive and one drive just for games. Because the M.2 Drives will be sharing the PCIe lanes of the chipset would I be better off with one 2.5" SATA drive and one M.2 Drive? Or is running two M.2 Drives fine?

    B450/m motherboards for 70-80$ ?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:11 PM PST

So I'm in a need of B450 motherboard for my Ryzen 5 2600 I'm yet to buy. Currently looking at ASrock B450M Pro4, I can get it for 72€ in my country. Are there better boards for similar price I could check out ? I really don't wanna pay 110€ for Tomahawk though.

Travel Often: Should I build a PC or buy a gaming laptop?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:07 PM PST

I currently have an HP Envy x360. i7 processor, Intel UHD Graphics 620, 12 gb RAM, 256 gb Storage.

I just entered my second year of college and I often have to travel between home and college by plane. Now that the holiday season has started and black friday is around the corner, I've started looking for deals on gaming laptops. I'm trying to find something solid, that will last for future (future being at least the next 2-3 years) games coming out (like Cyberpunk 2077) for around 1000$ or less.

I've realized it might be impossible to find a laptop with the specs I require at that price point, so I started thinking of building a gaming pc as it would be cheaper than trying to buy a gaming laptop. But the only issue with building a gaming pc is that I would have to either have to leave it at my house or college (meaning I wouldn't get to use it for 3 or 6 months depending where I leave it) or find a way to transport it on a plane between my house and college and vice versa.

Would I be better off just finding a laptop, and if so which would be good for what I specified -- I mainly play FPS (Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Siege, Destiny 2, Insurgency), Strategy (Company of Heroes 2, Civilization, Stellaris), and Cities Skylines.

Or should I just build a PC and if so what could I build that I could take on domestic flights?

TLDR: Trying to decide whether to build a gaming pc or find a cheap gaming laptop since I fly between my home and college often.

    i5 4690k vs i7 3770 paired with a 1070ti

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 09:20 AM PST

    Hey guys,

Just looking for some help regarding what would be a better pairing for gaming today. I have z87 board for the 4690k so I would be able to overclock it. Will the extra 4 threads on the 3770 outweigh higher core clocks and newer architecture of the 4690k?

    Thanks!

Edit: Sorry, to clarify, I have a non-overclockable q77 board for the 3770.

    Help First Time Building PC

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 01:05 PM PST

    Edited at bottom.

    Build Help/Ready: Help

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

    Oculus Rift S VR

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    All around decent VR gaming.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    600-1000$

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    U.S.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

Here is a link to what I'm thinking about building. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/BobTheBuilderRUS/saved/#view=YJ94nQ

    CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 2600X 3.6 GHz 6-Core Processor
MOTHERBOARD: ASRock B450M-HDV R4.0 Micro ATX AM4 Motherboard
    MEMORY: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3000 Memory
STORAGE: Intel 660p Series 1.02 TB M.2-2280 NVME Solid State Drive
VIDEO: MSI GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB VENTUS OC Video Card
POWER: Gigabyte P-B 650 W 80+ Bronze Certified ATX Power Supply

Provide any additional details you wish below.

I am unsure about the build, especially concerning the motherboard, power supply, and cooling. I am also looking for suggestions for what shell to use. I have not made a custom PC before.

    EDIT: New Link: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/BobTheBuilderRUS/saved/#view=PThhgs

I made some changes. I switched out the CPU for an AMD Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7 GHz 8-Core Processor and the RAM for Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3200 Memory. I assume it should be fine since it is same brand and as far as I can tell, the parts should all still be compatible?

Ryzen 3700x vs Intel 9700k? a slightly different approach..

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 04:38 AM PST

    Hey,

The time has come for me to upgrade my 4820k/GTX780 build from ~6 years ago. My plan is to buy components which are near the top of what is available right now in the hopes the next build can last another 5/6 years. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable about pc parts (more than when I bought a 4820k lol) and am looking for this community's input.

I will be using a 2080 super for the gpu, playing mostly AAA games (RDR2, Fallen Order, Cyberpunk, etc.) on a new 1440p ultrawide (most likely the LG 34GK950F-B) and I am looking for high frame rates. My only intensive use is currently gaming, I do not expect this to change. I know from the last sentence that if your only use is gaming you go with the 9700k, but i'm not convinced. Here is why:

I consulted the Gamers Nexus RDR2 cpu and gpu benchmarks at 1440p. Steve shows the following benchmarks:

    2080 super: 88 fps avg / 64 fps 1% lows / 56 fps 0.1% lows

    9700k: 123 fps avg / 89 fps 1% lows / 79 fps 0.1% lows

    3700x: 118 fps avg / 87 fps 1% lows / 82 fps 0.1% lows

The first potential flaw in my logic is that I am only looking at one game, I realize different games have different gpu/cpu demands. But given the types of games I will mostly be playing I believe RDR2 is a good proxy and like that it is a recent game. The second potential flaw is that cpu and gpu intensive tasks are not always at the same time, but given that the 1% lows for the cpus are near the gpu avg I think this is still points to the gpu pretty much always being the bottleneck. I am also assuming that as I go from 1440p benchmarks to 3440 x 1440 this will place even more load on the gpu relative to the cpu.

So only looking at this benchmark, I don't think I would see a noticeable difference in gaming between a 3700x and 9700k given that the gpu will be the bottleneck in each case?

If the above is true, then I should purchase either of the 3700x and 9700k based on other features in the card and price. The major feature I like in the 3700x are the 16 threads as I believe this will get more importance over time. I also like that the 3700x is less susceptible to vulnerabilities (it needs spectre patches but is not affected by meltdown and others). Currently the 3700x system build is cheaper than an 9700k build in Canada even with a X570 board.

At this point I am leaning with the 3700x, do you agree with the above logic? anything to add?

    Thanks!

    Stupid upgrade question

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:42 PM PST

    Current system:
GPU: GeForce GTX 980 Founder Edition
    MOBO: MSI 970 Gaming (MS-7693)
CPU: AMD FX-8350 with H100i Watercooler

I purchased an Asus Strix GTX 1060 6gb from Newegg before realizing that it's essentially the same card. I'm working on getting that order cancelled/refunded and I'm looking at what other options I have but I don't want to make another purchase that wouldn't actually do anything.

I'm looking into purchasing the 1660-ti 6gb. Do I need to upgrade my MOBO or CPU to run it?

    Need Advice On NVMe SSD

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:21 PM PST

I was thinking that the Samsung 970 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD wtih 1TB of storage might be a good fit. The price is $150 and I don't think I want to go higher than that.

Do you have any recommendations for my use case and budget?

Thinking about upgrading GPU, necessary to upgrade a 4770K running at 4,4Ghz?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2019 12:03 PM PST

Been thinking about buying a new GPU (Running Radeon R9 Fury) since I just upgraded my monitor from 1080p to 1440p. I've been with the 4770K for quite some years now - is it necessary to upgrade the CPU as well? How much will the CPU bottleneck?

As a student I'm not made of money - so preferably I'd like to just upgrade the GPU at the moment and build a whole new rig sometime later. I play a few games, but most are not AAA blockbusters and therefore not too demanding.
