    HyperX Gaming Cloud II Review

    Posted: 09 Feb 2022 05:57 AM PST

Hello Reddit! I don't post a whole lot on Reddit and this is my first product review on this platform. Yesterday was my 5 year anniversary on Reddit!

I purchased the HyperX Gaming Cloud II red version of the HSCP in approximately 2016 or early 2017 for my PC. I was previously using a Sony PS3/PS4 headset on PC that worked very well, but I got tired of the black ear cup material flaking off all over my shoulders and face.

I would like to start off by saying that I was very reluctant to purchase an AIO headset. 'Gaming Headsets' are a very iffy subject. You can easily Google the pros and cons of owning a headset that's labeled 'Gaming'. For convenience and standing in the middle of Best Buy; I tried on a few of the gaming headphones. I tried on a few flavors of Razer, SteelSeries, and Logi AIO gaming headsets.

    My Review:

    • Looks: Of course this is purely based on opinions. I think these look just about as good as any of the others on the market. They are not sleek, but at the same time, they do not look bulky.
    • Feel: This is where the Cloud X II's shine. They are very comfortable without a doubt.
    1. The padding at the crown of the headset is very nice. I've used these headphones for thousands of hours and the padding has still not broken down.
    2. After hundreds of hours of use with the solid ear cups, I noticed that my head was getting warm during the summer months, enough to make it uncomfortable. I switched over to the included foam version. These do not offer any sort sound deadening from the outside world, but they help with heat. I've been using the foam ear cups for the majority of ownership now and they have not broken down at all and seem to be the same form as when I purchased them new.
    • Hardware:
    1. This device comes with a detachable microphone as well as scratch filter on the tip of the microphone which helps with unwanted noises. I have noticed that this microphone is VERY directional. The input of the microphone needs to be directly in front of your mouth and in very close proximity. Oftentimes, friends in discord will complain they cannot hear me, which in turn is an immediate squeeze of the filter to make sure it is pointed in the right direction and near the corner of my mouth.
    2. The headset comes with an in-line audio controller (software, no dials) that is approximately 3 foot away from the headphones. you are unable to 'know' when the microphone is turned up all the way. It has a hardware mic mute, sound volume control, microphone volume control ( you are unable to 'know' when the microphone is turned up all the way), and a button to enable and disable 7.1 surround sound.
    • Sound: The sound of this device is exactly what you would expect. I do not believe it's too base-y. I'm not an audiophile, but from music to gaming and everything in-between, it sounds okay. My spatial awareness is great in-game. I know when an enemy is front, left, right, and rear. Tarkov audio is all sorts of messed up, but I'm still able to get things done.
    • Software: This is where the Cloud X II's are absolutely terrible and something I would like for all of you to be aware of when purchasing this device.
    1. The first and most obvious complaint from me and MANY others is microphone volume. Turned up to the maximum, your friends and foes will not be able to hear you. Sure that's great when you rage after getting killed in COD, but it's definitely an annoyance in terms of talking to your Discord buddies. After hours of research, there's absolutely no way to adjust this enough out of the box. This could definitely be a deal breaker to console players unable to install aftermarket equalizers. I was able to get around this issue by installing Peter's Equalizer APO Configuration Extension (PEACE) and boosting the microphone stereo to 75% or more depending on where you want it to be. I'm not sure if this is a problem on consoles as I do have not used this device on them.
    2. Next issue in line is the lack of a GUI. There are absolutely ZERO software settings that you can control from your PC. You'd need to add something like PEACE to be able to control sound variables of this device.
    3. Another issue I'm unsure if it's a hardware issue or software issue is every time you restart your PC, it disables the 7.1 button on the in-line audio control. For the vast majority of my ownership, the button stays off because I do not remember to turn it on every time. This button seems to add a little more treble, but I do not believe it enhances your directional hearing. It feels like two different sound profiles altogether.
    4. Next in line is firmware, according to a quick Google search, this headset was released in 2015. I find it VERY hard to believe that this device hasn't needed a single firmware update (other than an added PS4 functionality update from HyperX's website).
    5. As of 08FEB2022, HyperX gaming headsets are not supported on Windows 11. I believe that is the source of new problems that have arisen from this headset. The device will intermittently disconnect the microphone, but audio playback is still working. I have uninstalled/reinstalled the driver, chose different USB ports. Windows Troubleshooter will not find the issue with the microphone. The only remedy I have found is to unplug the USB and that fixes it. I will probably roll back to Windows 10. That's a lot cheaper of a fix than to purchase a new set of headphones.
    • Conclusion: This headset THE most comfortable headset I've owned. The hardware is mediocre, but on par with other gaming headsets out there. The software and longevity support of the device is absolutely terrible and could use a ton of work from HyperX Gaming. I'm sure all AIO gaming headsets have their own issues, but some of this stuff would've been useful to know when I made my purchase. If you have a PC, you can get around an issue or two with third party software, so I still believe this was a purchase worth my while and the hardware has held up very well for the 5+ years of ownership.

    Thank you for your time!
