Are Intel CPU cooler good for gaming?

How viable are integrated graphics right now ?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 04:13 AM PDT

we´ve been seeing from both AMD and Intel processors with decent onboard graphics.

The current XE80 and 96 as well as the Radeon 7 and 8 appear to allow 720p high and 1080p low/mid gaming on many games. im just saying for a general purpose machine with some median gaming. do you see this as viable ?

Especially with the 6000 Ryzen bringing RDNA2 graphics instead of the current vega ones and the intel Xe graphics currently seem to be more impacted by por optimization instead of actual lack of power.

TIFU when i helped my GF fix her PC

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 09:45 PM PDT

SO i had to learn this the hard way, and I seriously don't want anyone to make this stupid mistake I did (and cost me a new cpu, mobo and ram for no reason)

so one day, the circuit breaker for my wall plugs jumped, so i switched off all the extension chords (they had individual on/off swtiches).

I then reengaged (or wtever its called) my circuit breaker, and turned everything on one by one. When i got to my GF's PC, sparks flew out from the back of the PC with a LOUD metal on metal ping. The circuit breaker jumped again and i switched off the extension chord and disconnected her PC RIGHT AWAY.

So like any normal sane builder, they'll go buy a new powersupply and to test all the parts. swapped it out, plugged everything in, THE PC WONT TURN ON

the existential dread set it. is the mobo dead? is the CPU fried? is the GPU FRIED???? I was so scared.

I instantly took her GTX 1070 and tested it on my PC, and THANK GOD it was okay, everything worked.

So my thinking was, OKAY, i saved the GPU. Maybe the new psu is problematic. So i searched online and did the paperclip test, PSU working fine.

So i thought to myself, IT HAS TO BE THE MOBO, RIGHT?????? Spoiler alert, i was wrong. SO wrong.

So with my stupid dumbass insight i went out and bought a 10700F, aorus pro B560M AX and 2x8gb DDR4 3200 ram. also her case's on/off switch was kinda flakey so I bought her a new case as well. Her old cpu was a 6700 (non k) and the ram was DDR3, hence the new board and ram.

I proceeded to put everything together, but because im not completely dumb, I plugged in everything ontop of the mobo box first like any responsible builder would. BUT i didnt plug in the SATA power cables for her drives. Everything worked, i continued to build everything into the case.

EVERYTHING DONE! switched it on, nothing happened. then i realized, I didnt plug in the sata power cables when i was testing. Also because of my lazy ass, I just used the old sata power cables and didnt swap in the new ones that came with the new PSU.

So for some reason it occured to me that thats the only difference, so i took out the old sata power cables and put in the new ones. and everything worked! I was so happy for like 5 seconds and the realization hit me.... The old mobo and CPU were still working.

i immediately took the new PSU out again and tested the old board and CPU... got to post, everything worked perfectly... i just spent hundreds on a new CPU and mobo and ram for no reason. ....

TLDR; bought a brand new Mobo, CPU and Ram because of my lazy ass when testing my GF's pc parts after her PSU blew

Edit1: the problem isn't the upgrade. the 10700F is perfectly awesome for the price and will be awesome for years to come, but the thing is, my GF couldnt tell the difference. She only ever plays Apex Legends and there were stutters on the 6700, and with the 10700f they were completely gone. She couldn't tell the difference at all..... Also she has a very expensive 60hz panel that has auto color correction (shes a professional artist), and she games on it as well, so 60fps is all she'll ever need.

and this is what i tell myself. i fixed the stutter, and i know it. it shouldn't matter if the user cant tell..............................................................................

Edit2: someone pointed out in the comments that my ram on my 6700 are probably ddr4 and I checked and they are ddr4 1866mhz ram. Im dumb dumb… but I would've upgraded to faster ram anyways so I guess that's ok, and I can sell the old board cpu and ram as a set.

Moving from 6700K to 5900X and 1080 Ti to 3080 - Temps really as bas as people say?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2021 09:41 PM PDT

    Hello,

During the summer, my indoor temperature gets to ~30°C (86°C) and in winter ~19°C. For that reason, I've been using the brute force method of cooling by going with Noctua's PPC-3000 RPM fans, and they've done a good job but it's time to retire the jet engine-like sound they produce and move to a modern system. I've ordered a new one and it should arrive in 3-4 weeks.

    I'm moving from:

    • Intel 6700K @ 4.4 GHz 1.335v
    • Asus Z170 ROG Hero
    • Corsair H115i (CoolIt model no longer supported by Corsair software) w/ Noctua PPC-3000 RPM
    • 32GB 2133 12-12-28 1.2v
    • GTX 1080 Ti Hydro
    • Corsair RM750x
    • Corsair Obsidian 750D (the non-airflow edition, where it really means very little airflow)

    And moving to:

    • AMD 5900X
    • Asus ROG B550-E
    • Corsair H115i RGB Pro XT
    • Corsair LPX 64GB 3600 18-18-40 1.35v (not the best, but I need more RAM)
    • RTX 3080 XC3 Ultra
    • Corsair RM850x
    • Fractal Design Meshify 2 (but replacing two intake fans with 'be quiet! Silent Wings 3' as I was told these were good.

I'm also moving from a 2.5" SSD to my first NVMe drive (a cheap and cheerful PCIe 3.0 WD Blue 1TB).

    A few questions/concerns:

    1. After reading numerous threads on reddit (literally hundreds), as well as forums posts on EVGA, LTT, Techpowerup, and elsewhere, it seems the 5900X is quite hard to cool - or can be - and this is a concern due to the room temperatures mentioned above. I think the case I've chosen (Meshify 2) is good (GamersNexus gave a good review) and it seems there's very little difference between a 280mm AIO and a 360mm AIO.
    2. It also seems undervolting is back in fashion for both CPU and GPUs (I think the last time that applied to a system I had was my first Athlon X2 system). The consensus for the 5900X seems to be changing the offset to -0.1 or around there in order to stop (and I apologise if I've misunderstood this) most AMD boards providing obscene voltage.
    3. Undervolting also seems to be the desired method for the 3080 series with many suggestions on the EVGA forum.
    4. I'm not planning on overclocking as I understand the 5900X works like the GTX 1080 Ti with Boost - using overhead to boost higher. And, of course, the same applies to the RTX 3080.

I've been out of the loop since the Skylake days and AMD certainly has changed. Is there anything I should consider or that I've missed? With my 6700K and aging and abused old H115i, idle temps in winter are ~10°C above ambient and reach up to ~90°C.

Any thoughts/advice/corrections very much welcomed. Thank you.

How can I use something like Revo Uninstaller to find left over Epic Games files?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 10:08 AM PDT

I can easily do this with Steam and Revo does find left over game files and cleans up the registry etc.

However, with Epic, the game is stealthfully hidden inside the Epic launcher. One click of button and apparently the game is "uninstalled", but I only manually checked one game so far, and I did find folders and files left behind. I'm sure there are more and the more games I uninstall, the more files will get left behind.

How do I scrub my PC for Epic Games files after I uninstall a game? Thanks.

Recommendation for external hard drive for work (heavy read / write traffic)

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 09:09 AM PDT

I'm a software developer and switch between Macbooks often (2017 Macbook pros, touchbar model, with USB3 / Thunderbolt 3, I think...).

To allow myself to move between machines easily I want to work off of an external drive.

I'm looking for an external driver that is

    1. reliable
    2. fast read and writes
    3. has 1tb+

I'm expecting heavy read write traffic.
Portability is not that important (it will be stationary), also cost doesn't matter

Any tips on what drive would work well? I'm eyeing the SanDisk Extreme® Portable SSD V2

How would the drive compare to my internal drive? Would the performance diff be noticeable at all?

    Thanks for the support!

I bought a B450 board for my Ryzen 5600x because it was cheaper; was that a bad decision?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 12:45 PM PDT

B550 doesn't have any features that I personally would benefit from (I don't intend to overclock, which my B450 can do but maybe not as efficiently(?)), but it is newer and obviously more future-proof, so, since I'm still eligible for a full refund if I send it back, is a B550 worth the 100$ over my current 70$ B450 or should I just keep it and eventually upgrade in 5-6 years when the 5600X will be obsolete?

My board is a ASUS Prime B450M A2 running the latest bios update available.

My first build complete, Lessons learned, build update, and some questions...

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 12:23 PM PDT

I apologize in advance for the essay you're about to read, but here's a TL:DR

TL:DR - Building a PC was great fun. Don't get into a rush, keep your mind open while you're looking for parts, check clearances, and enjoy the process. I'm also doing some visual updates where I'm changing out parts, and I have questions on how to resell old parts.

PS Admins if I should split this up into different posts let me know and that can be arranged

A while back, I posted on here that I was planning to build a PC (Actually a couple of times I have posted on this sub), and each time I got tips, tricks, hits, and suggestions on how to maximize my build.

    Ill split this post into four parts;

    1. My Current build
    2. lessons learned
    3. The visual update I am planning to give my build
    4. A couple questions I have.

All sections will be separated by a blank space and a bolded header.

    My Current Build:

    My Build

    Picture of finished build: https://pasteboard.co/KjGHtHF.jpg

Everything went great, my brother and I spent all of about 5 hours putting this together (yes, a bit long but we were being extra careful, and pausing to watch guide videos along the way.). and we had a great time! Just a couple hiccups at the end, but at the end of the day stuff (mainly just the RGB) turned on when we plugged the PC in and hit the power button. I would 100% recommend building a pc to any of you on here that are thinking about it.

But this brings me to the next part, everything that I learned during this process that helped me build my dad a computer afterwards (He wanted to upgrade his computer so he could play FS2020 right after I built mine).

    Lessons Learned

    1. Don't be afraid to take a step back and watch a "How to build a PC "video while you build yours (ESPECIALLY FOR FIRST TIMERS)
      1. I was ready to jump in, and start throwing stuff together. I thought oh I have watched videos on this, I can do it. But no, there were a couple of things where it stumped us, or we probably would have done it wrong, had we not stopped and looked at a video.
    2. Always check the clearances on the case
      1. Some to keep in mind are: GPU clearance, CPU cooler Clearance, Radiator clearance (if you plan on getting an AIO)
        1. I was building my dads computer, and got a longer case, but didn't pay attention to CPU cooler clearance, and accidentally got a cooler that didn't fit by 3mm.
    3. If you don't have a full job, or money to go back and revise the build, just make sure you think this is the build you want and mull over it and see if it's the aesthetic you want
    4. If you're using cable extensions with combs, the combs should all go on the viewing side of the case.
    5. If you're using the Vision D-P Motherboard specifically, there is a white clip that is there for show that will make your life hell if you don't take it out before you put it into the case. Its located where your CPU power 8-pin will be inserted as well as a fan header that is in the corner and a Motherboard screw slot.
    6. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DO NOT DO WHAT I DID AND USE THE PCI-E 8-PIN FOR THE MOTHERBOARD POWER. THE CABLE WAS LABELED AND I STILL DID THAT. IT WILL NOT TURN ON PROPERLY.
    7. Enjoy the process, a lot of this is for the experience.

    The Visual Update

To give basis for my frivolous spending on this part, I am a huge fan of being able to customize something, and I am grateful that I have the money to do so without stretching the bank. I am the type of person that if I see something I like, or something I could've done better that would make a huge difference in how it looks for me, I will go ahead and go for it, because I love being able to take a step back and say "Damn that's sexy." and not "It could look better".

Down to the real nitty gritty. after looking around, I realized that Lian Li Uni SL120's are a thing, as well as the Lian Li Pc O11 Dynamic case. And this is what I want my build to look like.

Here is a list of all the parts that I want to change out: Parts to be Updated

Im going to replace the stock black fans on the NZXT radiator with the Lian Li SL120's and place the rad at the top of the case. Then 3 SL120's but at the bottom of the case and front ending up looking roughly like: This Build

I am hoping that the rad wont be too noticeable at the top of the case, however I am also looking at the backup Corsair H150i elite Capellix, I am just preferring the Kraken X73 for the ability to customize the LCD screen with whatever I want to put on it.

A Couple of Questions I have

Since I just finished this build roughly a month ago, the parts (Case, fans, and cooler) are still like-new which is leading me to think I can re-sell them.

    Now here's the problem...

Not thinking I would update the computer so soon, I trashed all of the boxes. Is there theoretically any resell value of a case or fans without their original boxes?

if so.... How would I add protection to the case so that it doesn't get trashed in transit?

In length, if you have made it this far I appreciate you reading my ted talk, and for all of those that helped me with my multiple iterations of my build, you guys are some real ones.

If you have any suggestions or questions, feel free to ask. as my professors say, I have an open door policy.

    Cocoa powder in power supply

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 01:57 PM PDT

    Hi,

I was moving and put my power supply (inside its own box it came in) in the same moving box as a box of cocoa powder. Unfortunately the latter opened and spread everywhere including getting a bit inside the power supply box.

Should I be worried about using that power supply in the future for my computer? In particular I'm worried about any cocoa powder leaking from the power supply to the motherboard area and causing issues there. Or is cocoa powder just like dust and I shouldn't worry too much about it?

WFH set up and introducing a Thunderbolt PCI Expansion Card into the mix

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 01:04 PM PDT

Hey Reddit- Working on optimizing my WFH set up after my new job indicated any kind of virtual KVM software is off the table (assuming RDP/VNC is off the table as well). Really looking to use ONE set of peripherals between my personal and work computers. With that in mind, my IT department is giving me a Startech Thunderbolt docking station for my MacBook Pro work computer.

Friend of mine made the following suggestion to try out-

    • Install a PCI Express Thunderbolt card into my personal PC something like this here
    • Then, simply plug all my existing peripherals into work provided dock and switch plugging in my personal PC and my work machine as needed

All of this is kind of off the table if my mobo doesn't support a Thunderbolt expansion card anyway, but any input from the community here would be greatly appreciated. Kind of feeling limited on options with wanting as simple of an end solution as possible, but open to recommendations or suggestions to try! Thanks!

About ready to pull the trigger, just seeking validation:

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 12:59 PM PDT

    Moderately powerful AMD gaming build.

The GPU and Motherboard are already purchased, sort of restricting what I can buy. My previous post indicated that AMD is doing better this generation. If you can keep the price roughly the same and move to a 5900X, please let me know how. The 5900X is $300 more than the 5800X, and I'd rather not spend THAT much more.

Looking for 3 27" monitors that run 2K @ 144. The 3060 will probably have issues pumping that much for graphically intense games, I'll have to suffer.

1TB SSD is small these days, but I tend to prune pretty aggressively.

    Computer randomly crashes

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 12:45 PM PDT

Hey guys! I'm posting again here due to the lack of info with my previous post.

When my PC crashes randomly, the screen either goes completely white, blue, or green. Sometimes audio will playback through for a few seconds and then it freezes, other times the audio "stutters" or it sounds like a "robot" and then freezes as well which will force me to hard reset it. Since the random crashes keep on happening, I deep cleaned my GPU thinking it might be a cause of overheating. I followed some guides from another website which suggested that I should uninstall my GPU driver and get a fresh driver but the problem still persists and the problem #3 started to appear. The problem happens whenever I am playing games namely, Black Desert, APEX, R6 Siege, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

I can recall that these kinds of problems started when my PC was not able to read one of my RAM sticks even though I did not touch any of the internal parts.

I found errors on my event viewer log and these are the following:

My dad needs a new PC!

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 12:35 PM PDT

    Intro:

Hi everyone! My dad's old computer is dying and he wants me to build him something new that can stand the test of time, something that's still fast in 5 years. I've been out of the pc building game since the E8500 + Nvidia 8800GT times so I'm a bit rusty. He's very persistent on it having a 10th gen i5 for some reason so that's what I included.

What will my dad do with it?

Watch movies (4k), office, browse the internet, and in the future maybe play some games (No GPU included for now since that's a maybe for him). Store lots of photo's and data.

    The budget:

€850,- (1000 usd), although he would love closer to 750,-. The parts will be bought in The Netherlands.

    My question:

Are there any suggestions for this build, maybe cheaper components that are just as good? Wifi on the mobo for example not 100% needed, but maybe displayport would be nice... Hope I'm not too far off! Hope you guys can help us out, thank you!

    Cheap Desktop - Multiple Monitors

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 10:10 AM PDT

I'm looking for just a simple desktop that I can run a Remote Desktop (RDP via Citrix) on and other various online websites/OneDrive.

I don't use my computer for gaming, videos or anything like that. Pretty much just internet, Excel and PowerPoint. But I would like the ability to project to three monitors, I have a Plugable docking station that works fantastic with my old Lenovo Yoga and my current Dell G7 (two monitors use the dock while the third is connected directly to the laptop).

Apologies if this is the wrong flair, new to the channel and don't know much about computers. Any recommendation would be appreciated.

Good pair of 140mm fans for top of Corsair 4000D?

Which model is good? I was just testing with a 140 mm that came bundled with my DH15 and I had trouble lining up the screw holes properly. Anyone have a known good one that I can buy which fits nicely for the top fans on this case? (Plain is fine. I don't do RGB.)

    Ryzen 7 APU

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 02:26 AM PDT

    Hello.

Spoken to a PC builder who's recommended Ryzen 7 APU for sims 3/4 and maybe something like Assasins Creed (low settings). He is saying I can upgrade later to create a CPU/DGC in a few years or whenever I want one.

I just want to run it past you guys - will this suitably Sims 4 on good graphic settings in the meantime? I have all the packs plus 3/4GB of CC and mods in the Gáme.

2TB SATA SSD or >6TB FUZEDRIVE (>6TB HDD + 1TB NVME) for Storage?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 11:34 AM PDT

This storage will hold games that I intend to play...

I have used a FUZEDRIVE for 2-3 years and overall I am happy with it - games load faster the more you play them.

With DirectStorage coming soon I do not know if I totally want to get away from the whole FUZEDRIVE thing

I have a NAS for most large storage so I don't necessarily need 6tb on hand

I do not mind having separate physical Disks for OS and storage but I know I want to keep a pure NVMe SSD for BOOT/OS
