What is going on with recent psu reviews?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:51 AM PDT

I am one of the lucky few I guess to get a Nvidia 3080, unfortunately my power supply is an Evga 650w psu so I need to upgrade it, I checked a bunch of reviews online for Corsair and Evga and I see a few one star reviews that say it fried their PC? It seems to be on every Psu review page I can find and I don't if it's a serious issue or not?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:50 AM PDT

I got this old 3090 dell optiplex for free, as my aunt is a teacher and they were gonna throw it, and I've always wanted to build my own but my mom wouldn't let. Fast forward 2 weeks and now almost all of the parts I ordered are in!!!! Just the sticks of ram are left, which will be delivered sometime today. I couldn't be more excited to swap everything out at once! This is my first pc and I just need a new cpu, but I can't spend all of my money on one ;( I'm beyond excited for it to be put together!!!

    The parts that I've order, along with what I am replacing is as follows;

    2x8gb DDR3 1600hz sticks of ram replaced 2x2gb sticks

    4gb ssc gtx 970 replacing a 1gb GT610

    brand new 256gb ssd

    RTX 3080 ($1429) vs RTX 3080ti ($1708) or RX 6900XT

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 04:13 AM PDT

    Hello all

I live in New Zealand and a new stock of GPUs have recently arrived in the country. I usually read reviews, but most of them give recommendations based on the MSRP of the cards, which isn't really helpful when the prices are so wild.

    I'll be using a 1440p 165hz monitor.

    My options are:

    EVGA FTW3 RTX 3080 for US$1429

    EVGA FTW3 RTX 3080ti for US$1708.

    MSI RX 6900xt for US$1636

Powercooler RedDevil RX 6900XT for US$1503

    Thanks!

Should I repaste my GTX 1070?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 09:27 AM PDT

My gtx 1070 hasn't been opened for 4 years and I was wondering why the thermal paste hasn't failed yet seeing as I get a maximum of 45C while running DISHONOURED Death of the outsider on maximum graphics (fans are running at 100% because I set them to that)

Cooler ripped my CPU out, now it won’t boot.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 05:00 AM PDT

    Yep.

I'm pretty upset, because I've seen people do this before and let it cook before trying to remove it. I've read that this is pretty common with Ryzen chips so I wasn't too worried at first, but now I have no idea what to do. The pins look completely fine, and I wouldn't be able to tell if something is wrong in the socket. Is this a motherboard problem?

Thanks for clicking, I'm looking for some 1080p monitors, preferably cheap or good value for specs, it would be nice if they were at least 144hz, and yeah, that's it I guess, 1080p, min 144hz. Thanks!

Wifi can't find network and fan light color changed, what did I do wrong?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:23 PM PDT

I recently moved and my aorus z390 pro wifi worked perfectly beforehand. When opening up the desktop I noticed one cable (a small four-pointed cable) had detached itself. A matching end was nearby (a cable with four small holes) and I attached it to that. When booting up my computer, the top fan had changed to a different color than my bottom two and the wifi does not work. I assume that the cables are unrelated, but what did actually happen here?

For information, the new place does not have an ethernet socket, thus I am completely dependent on the wireless wifi.

    Ryzen 5600X vs 5600G

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 06:20 AM PDT

Ok, so this is my problem, 4 month ago I upgrade my PC from a FX8320 to a 5600X. The problem was that due to high price of GPUs I had to keep my old one, a R9 270X 2GB. So I was thinking on selling my 5600X and replace it with 5600G for a sort of GPU upgrade until I can get my hands on a 3060, but not sure if its worth it.

I must add I live in Chile and right now it's impossible to find a GPU at MSRP, all prices are scalper price plus gain, even on importer stores, a RTX3060 can be found on average at $1000 and up.

I'm not a heavy gamer, but I want a PC that it's capable for the next 4 or 5 years

I cant believe I am saying this but... Help me switch from Mac?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 07:57 AM PDT

So a bit of background, I have used Mac exclusively for about ten years, it links with my iphone, ipad and macbook easily. Great. However the main reason was I used Logic Pro and final cut for work. Recently (the last year or two) I have found myself using Ableton and Davinci, software that can run on both mac and PC. For general browsing I use my Macbook Air which I will be keeping as it is extremely portable.

Needing an upgrade now my main Mac is 5/6 years old and struggling to keep up when editing video, I waited for apple to release the M1 chip for what seemed like forever. When it came it is only the entry level chip and it feels like I have waited for an eternity hoping than an M1x chip is on the way soon.

Now the spanner in the works. I enjoy gaming. In particular sim racing and am using an xbox series s for this. Having grown tired of waiting for Apple, realising all the software I use is also on PC and realising I can sell my consoles and game on PC I am now looking at PC's. However.... I know nothing about PC's.

I want to see if I can spec a PC that will allow me to produce music, edit short videos (no movies here) and game all on the same system for similar price to what a macbook pro would cost me (£1500ish). If it cost less, even better and would be more of push for me to take the leap. I know there is a global shortage of parts at the moment so I have been looking at buying a prebuilt and maybe changing CPU and graphics card to suit. From what I understand I will need a decent graphics card for gaming and a decent CPU for video editing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    GTX 1080TI or RTX 2070

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:09 PM PDT

Upgrading my brother's PC and trying to figure out parts. The GPU market sucks right now, so we're buying used. Budget for the card is around $500. Would like to get an RTX 2070, but supply sucks. Am I going to regret it if I just buy a 1080ti instead?

    Also, I doubt that an i7 6700 or i7 6700k will cause a bottleneck?

EDIT: He'd like to stream as well

    PC wont start up!

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:43 PM PDT

Hey there, new to both pc building a Reddit. I made a new computer with these parts: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/DpPgGq as well as a 1TB crucial ssd

It was working fine yesterday, however it kept hard crashing. I decided to try and fix it the next day but now it won't start at all. The fans and lighting of components come on but nothing shows up on the monitor and the keyboard / mouse don't light up.

I tried replugging component and cleared my cmos battery but this didn't work. Any advice?

Snagged a 3060ti... building my first PC around it

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 01:23 PM PDT

I have been hoping to build my first ever PC (only ever had a laptop before) for the past couple years, but had been putting it off due to the pandemic. I managed to snag a Zotac Gaming Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060ti today, so I am trying to build the rest of my PC around that.

I am brand new to PCs, and despite a lot of research, there are a lot of terms and acronyms that I have yet to grasp. I've been playing around in PCPartPicker and this is what I came up with, but it's a bit more money than I was hoping to spend (note that this does not include the GPU price).

That said, I am hoping to take advantage of the graphics card, and I do have a 1440p monitor I would love to use to its potential.

Can anyone provide feedback on the parts I've selected? I am especially worried about the CPU and motherboard, since those are the other two big pieces.

    A couple other concerns/notes:

    • The case supposedly has a front panel USB port, but the motherboard doesn't support it. I can't see the port in pics, but I assume it's not a problem as long as I understand I can't use that port, right?
      • The motherboard will have USB ports in the back that I can still use, correct? Looking to plug in a mouse, possibly another 1-2 peripherals, and will need to connect my monitor with USB-C or DP. Would also like 1-2 ports for other use, like plugging in a controller if I ever want to do that.
    • PCPartPicker says the CPU doesn't have a stock CPU Cooler--should I be looking to buy one of those?
    • There is also a note about the motherboard only supporting the CPU with a specific BIOS, and that I'll need to upgrade the BIOS--I assume that won't be too difficult to do?
    • I would like both Wifi and Bluetooth, and while happy to buy a dongle, it's nice if the motherboard comes with these built in (and they actually work).

    Motherboard x RAM compatibility question

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 12:50 PM PDT

I'm looking at the following motherboard and RAM:

    • 64GB 3600MHz DDR4 RAM Kingston HyperX Predator RGB XMP CL16 (2x32GB) (HX436C18PB3AK2/64)
    • MSI B550 Tomahawk

My retailer told me that this RAM is not listed as compatible for the motherboard. They said it likely is, but no guarantees. They recommended some alternatives, but all of them were much worse in terms of specs and I'd really like to get this combo. Do I have anything to worry about in terms of compatibility?

Monitor upgrade: 4k, ultrawide, or dual setup?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 10:28 AM PDT

I have a 24" monitor at the moment and thinking about upgrading it to something better. I use my PC mainly for productive (school, programming) and occasionally for gaming. I have a $500 budget and wondering which of the following option is the best.

    1) One 4k 32" monitor with vertical 24" on the side.

    2) One ultrawide 32" monitor with vertical 24" on the side.

    3) Get another 24" monitor.

    4) Sell the current 24" and get two 27" ones instead.

I am leaning towards the option one slightly at the moment because vertical space is more important for me in terms of programming. But ultrawide does look fantastic for gaming. As reference, the game I play the most are Minecraft, civ 6, assassin's Creed, and I am thinking about getting Dyson sphere program and cities skylines soon.

Please let me know if you have any thought on this :D

    Edit: not sure why I said 32 I meant 34 for ultrawide😂

Building a new rig and having some compatibility issues

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 11:58 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

As the title states, I'm building a new PC and having some compatibility issues when running the parts on pcPartPicker. I've added the compatibility notes below the build. I guess my main concern is whether or not the first two issues (USB 3.2 port and SATA 6.0) are merely going to limit the data transfer speed, or if they are going to be completely disabled. Any insight, or suggestions on alternate parts would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Build Help/Ready:

Have you read the sidebar and rules? (Please do)

    Yes.

What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better.

Primarily 4k video editing/rendering. Some gaming.

If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings)

    Gaming requirements are less critical.

What is your budget (ballpark is okay)?

    Around $6,000.00

In what country are you purchasing your parts?

    United States.

Post a draft of your potential build here (specific parts please). Consider formatting your parts list. Don't ask to be spoonfed a build (read the rules!).

    Micro Center came through

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 10:24 AM PDT

Welp, I headed over to the Micro Center in the burbs of Chicago yesterday with low expectations of picking up a GPU and the raffle paid off. I picked up an MSI 3070 TI for $950 which I know isn't a fantastic price but definitely much better than prices online. The small army of sales associates were very prepared and extremely courteous to everyone there looking for a card.

I can't recommend this enough as a way to try and get a 30 series GPU. I was chatting with some folks in line who said Best Buy's email notification system is a total clusterfudge and lines of 80+ people form up immediately after they send out the mail for an individual store.

So if you have a MC near you and still need a card, then definitely give this a try. You need to show up about an hour before they open as the window where they accept raffle entries via the QR code is only a half hour. Bring a buddy if you can to increase your chances.

Stock seemed really good. They had several cases of 3070 TI and 3080s and I assume a whole bunch of lower end cards too. Prices are not near MSRP but definitely way better than Amazon. The box on the one I bought was opened but the card itself was still in the plastic and looks flawless. Can't wait to try it!

Props to this company for figuring out a fair way to allow us PC gamers to upgrade our systems without the awful experience of waiting in giant lines hours before stores open. I really have to give them credit for setting up a system like this.

Feeling of disappointment in my build

    Posted: 28 Aug 2021 07:07 AM PDT

Hey there! I've been using my current build since november 2019 and as the title says – I am a bit disapointed in it. First of all – here it is:

    • GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER GAMING OC WHITE 8GB GDDR6
    • CPU: Intel Core i5-9400F
    • RAM: Corsair 16GB (2x8GB) 3000MHz CL16 Vengeance LPX Black
    • SSD: ADATA 512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe XPG SX8200 Pro
    • Motherboard: ASRock Z390 PRO4
    • Power: SilentiumPC Supremo L2 550W 80 Plus Gold
    • Tower: Krux Leda
    • Monitor: AOC 24G2U/BK IPS 144Hz 1ms DP HDMI Pivot

And here's the problem: in many games my FPS isn't as high as it "should" be. For example in Cyberpunk 2077 I have to play on mid/low settings to get unstable (!) 70-80 FPS, with many occasions when it drops below 60. Not only Cyberpunk, but the old games, such as Mount&Blade Warband, tend to run maximally at 120 fps. Generally speaking, I can't play most AAA games on very high/high if I want to have smooth gameplay without FPS drops.

And here's my question: is something in my build a problem? Or maybe I've outdated drivers and goofed up something during assembling of the build? It's not the end of the world for me, as I said – I've been using it for almost two years now, but I paid good money for this build and would love to use it to it's full potential (or at least GPU's full potential).
