Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

No one cares but I installed new RAM on my PC for the first time in my life.

I got really scared of fucking up but as soon as I heard the click sound I got more relieved. I still cannot believe I did it. It did not broke, it did not failed to detect, the lights turned on as soon as I turned on my PC.

This is a dream, right? I'm still shaking.

EDIT: Thanks for the support everyone!

Hey everyone I have a funny post (and I may just fucking kill myself haha)

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 12:33 PM PDT

I just got a new monitor, right? And this monitor was G-Sync compatible. Awesome. For some reason, in my nVidia Control Panel, I didn't have a "video" tab. After reading through some forums posts, I found out that the reason is because I had my monitor (and by extension, my old monitor) plugged into my motherboard, which was apparently NOT what you're supposed to do. I have been playing like this for 3+ years.

Do you have any recommendations for my first-time PC build?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 01:59 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

If you had told me 3 months ago I would be making this now, I would've never believed you. But an absolutely random trip to Microcenter scored me a 3070 Ti and now it's time to get the rest of the parts.

I have never built a PC before, and my only real knowledge of PC building is what I have learned over the last few months of looking. I am hoping to primarily build a pc for gaming, but I also do photography and a bit of videography, so I will also be doing a small amount of editing. As far as gaming is concerned, I don't need 4k. Coming from a console, if I can get close to 1440p, 100hz, and 60+ fps, I would be happy. I play a wide mix of games from Cyberpunk to Battlefield.

I was originally hoping to keep the cost as close to $1,000 as possible, but with the GPU price increases and limited supply, I had to spend most of that on the GPU. I would still like to get the rest of the parts as close to $1,000 as possible though. There may be some places where I am spending a bit more than needed, like my motherboard, but I keep seeing reviews recommending a B550.

Gaming PC for my son...CPU choice...

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 01:33 PM PDT

My son's old AMD FX-6300 & GTX 760 machine is showing its age ;) Plus, he's shown interest in building his own pc for the first time.

Planning on a build this weekend and am looking for some advice.

I was thinking about going with a Ryzen 5600G paired with a fast 16 GB ram kit, but I'm second guessing this.....would he be better off with a 5600X and re-using the GTX 760 until video card prices aren't stupid?

He's mainly into stuff like Fortnite, Rocket League, Minecraft Java.

Just another high schooler who needs advice on a budget gaming pc build

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 10:38 AM PDT

Aloha strangers! I'm a high schooler with very minimal pc experience trying to build his first gaming pc. Below I've linked the build I've managed to concoct after an extensive 30-minute google search, and I was wondering if it was... well any good, and any recommendations that (very preferably) adhere under my 1 grand budget. I'm not looking for anything crazy, just something I can stream and record the likes of Minecraft on. Much obliged good people of Reddit!

    https://pcpartpicker.com/list/tgqJJf

(also, I was told Amazon is the only platform I could use because that's the only one my family trusts >.>)

Edit: Now know my cpu has better graphics than the 7 year old GPU I picked out, so uh, that's a thing.

My PC shut itself off earlier today and won't come back on

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 08:58 AM PDT

Trying to figure out where to start with troubleshooting. I'm pretty sure the PSU is fine as turning it on/off produces audible "thunks" in my speakers and lights up my audio interface.

I'm afraid it could either be the CPU or GPU but I don't know how to determine this.

When I press the power button on the tower I can hear something trying to happen (like a slight electrical buzz for a second) but it does not start up.

I took the side panel off and cleared out a bunch of dust, it wasn't anything too crazy as I do try to dust it out every so often, but there was definitely quite a bit of dust in there. Cleaning it out didn't change anything though.

This PC is ~4 or 5 years old. Nvidia 1080, i7-7700K with a corsair H115i water cooler, and a GIGABYTE GA-Z270MX motherboard.

Here's a pic of the internals if it helps at all. I don't really know where to start with troubleshooting this issue. Thanks for any help

Prebuilt Pc has serious trouble with most games

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 01:55 PM PDT

I bought a prebuilt pc with a 1650 and an i5 6500. These are much more than enough for Rocket league and some of the other games I've been trying. I'm getting like 7 fps and there is a 2 second delay on every input I make. I have checked task manager and don't see anything wrong and I have tried minimizing graphics. Anyone know what's going on?

Edit: 16 gigs ram too and my GPU hasn't gone above 45°

I need more RGB and I think I've maxed out my motherboard's capability - What are my options?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 01:04 PM PDT

Alright, I am going to try my best to keep this as short and sweet as possible.

My case is a Lian Li Lancool II Mesh Performance. My motherboard is an ASUS Maximus XII Hero Wi-Fi. It has two 5v RGB headers, two 12v RGB headers, and two USB headers.

    With my current setup:

    1. I have 8 Lian Li UNI AL120 fans plugged into the controller it comes with and this controller is utilizing one USB header. Included with the controller is a 5v RGB splitter and I have this splitter plugged into one of the 5v RGB headers. This splitter splits off to the controller (so the fans have RGB) and to my Lancool II 2x (it is an LED strip designed for the Lancool II case).
    2. I then have a Kraken Z73 AIO Cooler plugged into the second USB header.
    3. I have Lian Li Strimer plus (both 24 pin and 8 pin) connected to that controller which is then connected to the second 5v RGB header.
    4. I have nothing plugged into the 12v RGB headers.

So in total, both 5v RGB headers are in use. Both USB headers are in use. None of the 12v RGB headers are in use. What I also have and want to include in my build are the Phanteks Neons. There are 3 different types that all vary in length (totaling four cables). I have all 3 types.

Problem is, they require 5v RGB headers. I know I CANNOT install them on the 12v RGB headers and I currently do NOT plan to use a converter.

I reached out to Phantek and they recommended using a splitter (https://www.phanteksusa.com/collections/digital-rgb-products/products/phanteks-digital-rgb-3-pin-splitter-extension-cable). However, I am already using a splitter on one 5v RGB header and the other 5v RGB header is utilizing the Lian Li Strimer plus but Lian Li says to NOT use a splitter with the Strimer plus controller on their website. So using a splitter seems out of the question since I would either exceed the 3 Amps the 5v RGB header can handle. Here are the Phanteks Neons amperage: Combo strips are 0.84A each, M1 is 2.1A each, M5 is 1.14A each.

Another option Phantek suggested is using their Digital Controller Hub (https://www.phanteksusa.com/collections/digital-rgb-products/products/digital-controller-hub). I feel this could work but it looks like this requires to be plugged into a USB header, which I do not have available. If I wanted to add more USB headers I could purchase an Internal USB Hub (https://nzxt.com/product/internal-usb-hub-gen-3). However, I am unsure of the reliability of such a device.

All in all, I feel I hit a brick wall and am seeking help to see if there are any solutions to my problem or if I am indeed maxed out on everything I can install. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

What can go wrong with a PSU?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 09:06 AM PDT

I am building a system, and have most of the parts excluding the CPU, RAM and unsurprisingly the GPU. I got a good deal for my PSU which is a corsair RM650x off of ebay. It was in the condition "Opened never used", and seems to be in perfect condition from looks alone. Though I know ebay can be sketchy, and I'm regretting buying from there, so I'm skeptical as to whether or not it is working or damaged at all.

If I built the system with the PSU and it failed, could it possibly damage my other components? I have a system which I can test it on now, but don't really want to damage it either.

    Confused about RAM compatibility

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 12:23 PM PDT

    Hi,

    I built my first PC a few years ago, if you're interested, these are the specs;

    • Ryzen 5 2600
    • ASUS Prime B350M-K
    • RX 550 2GB (In need of upgrading, but unable due to insane GPU prices)
    • GIEL Evo Spear 2x4GB DDR4 2400 MHz RAM

I'm happy with the PC, but aside from the GPU, which is a problem I mentioned, I'm also having issues with my RAM memory. It's apparently 2400 MHz, however, CPU-Z is telling me the DRAM and NB frequencies are 1197 MHz? I turned on D.O.C.P. in my BIOS, and it told me that it's set to 2400 MHz there, so I don't understand why it's being read differently in CPU-Z. I don't feel like the RAM isn't preforming well, I'm pretty sure I am playing video games on the level the RAM is meant to be, but maybe I just got used to it? I don't know.

This isn't the main issue though. I have been looking to buy new RAM, 2x8gb of HyperX Fury 3200 MHz, but there is so much info on how to know which RAM will fit your system that countless videos couldn't explain to me what the deal is. Is it important that the RAM I'm trying to buy is or isn't on my motherboard / CPU QVL list? Is RAM memory and CPU memory tied? Is there something else I'm missing?

Is a warranty really "void" if you remove the sticker?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 08:24 AM PDT

In all of the tech youtubers videos like JayzTwoCents or Bitwit or Linus, they all remove the PSU sticker. The stickers clearly say "Warranty void if removed." Is that really true? I remember in one of his more recent videos, I can't remember which one specifically, Jay had a whole rant about how that warning is really just BS and they'll still warranty the product. Is that true?

Does the same RAM module at different prices and brands matter?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2021 11:50 AM PDT

    Corsair CMZ8GX3M1A1600C10 Vengeance 8GB (1x8GB) DDR3 1600 MHz (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory 1.5V

    and

    A-Tech 8GB DDR3 1600MHz DIMM PC3-12800 UDIMM Non-ECC 2Rx8 Dual Rank 1.5V CL11 240-Pin Desktop Computer RAM Memory Upgrade Module

The former is $50 and the latter is $30. Is there gonna be any significant performance difference?

I want to combine one of these 8gb sticks with a DDR3 1600MHz 4gb stick I already have installed.
