Gabe Newell E-Mails: Steam Deck has an m.2 2230 slot, including the base eMMC model Posted: 16 Jul 2021 04:08 PM PDT UPDATE: Now confirmed: https://www.steamdeck.com/en/tech 2230 drives aren't sold through retail so they aren't the easiest to find, but a few places do split up bulk OEM trays and sell them individually. 1TB can be had for less than the cost of Valves 512GB option. https://www.lambda-tek.com/Kioxia-KBG40ZNS256G~sh/B43816913 [link] [comments] |

Is there a big difference between eMMC vs SSD? Posted: 17 Jul 2021 12:42 AM PDT I'm not really familiar with hardware stuff. I am just intrigued by the cheapest steam deck option and I want to ask if there really is a big difference in eMMC and SSD? All I know is that SSD runs faster but how does eMMC compare to it? Posted: 16 Jul 2021 01:04 PM PDT The bandwidth of TB3/TB4 for an eGPU is about 22 Gbps in either direction (only attainable when no video is transmitted over the connection). For an M.2. sized connector with PCIe 4.0 4x, it's 63.04 Gbps in either direction. The Asus XG Mobile supports a PCIe 3.0 8x link, which is the same bandwidth as PCIe 4.0 4x. Very few motherboards support PCIe hotswapping, but they can if the manufacturer wants to. The XG Mobile (the eGPU) and ROG Flow (the laptop designed for the XG Mobile), do. Now imagine if Asus opens up its proprietary implementation of the PCIe connector of the XG Mobile and ROG Flow, making it common across motherboards and laptops, and manufacturers on top of that make it a PCIe 4.0 8x, then we could freely exchange our graphics cards between our devices, and without any bandwidth bottlenecks (not even the GeForce RTX 3080 and Radeon RX 6800 XT would saturate PCIe 4.0 8x). A Razer Core X or other eGPU enclosure would then make so much more sense for the money they cost. Thunderbolt eGPU has its place. Like when you only care about being able to have four 4k 120 Hz displays connected via effectively one cable to your laptop. Or you want to keep up with the latest video codec by replacing a gpu, instead of replacing your much more expensive laptop. Or simply you move around from desk to desk a lot, and you need the easiest way to reconnect. But for eGPU gamers, even the doubling of PCIe bandwidth of the yet to be released TB5 kinda really sucks. Going from 22 to 44 Gbps per direction is too little too late when we know that a still compact sized PCIe connector (XG Mobile / ROG Flow), can support much more bandwidth than that already, and that if said PCIe connector being upgrade to 4.0 with the same number of lanes, the bandwidth per direction would be 126.08 Gbps... almost triple of TB5's. - TB3/TB4 Bandwidth: https://images.anandtech.com/doci/13944/tb3-bw_575px.png (https://www.anandtech.com/show/13944/exploring-tb3-egfx-with-powercolor-gaming-station-rx-vega-56-nano/2). - PCIe bandwidth: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PCI_Express. - XG Mobile + ROG Flow review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcLi8W0Ysmc [link] [comments] |
