Posted: 24 Jul 2021 02:26 AM PDT People and the media should really stop perpetuating this nonsense. It implies a causation that is factually incorrect. A game sends commands to the GPU (there is some driver processing involved and typically command queues are used to avoid stalls). The GPU then processes those commands at its own pace. A game can not force a GPU to process commands faster, output thousands of fps, pull too much power, overheat, damage itself. All a game can do is throttle the card by making it wait for new commands (you can also cause stalls by non-optimal programming, but that's beside the point). So what's happening (with the new Amazon game) is that GPUs are allowed to exceed safe operation limits by their hardware/firmware/driver and overheat/kill/brick themselves. [link] [comments] |

ADATA XPG GAMMIX S70 owners! Firmware update improves performance Posted: 23 Jul 2021 08:49 AM PDT Hey all! So I recently posted a review of the ADATA XPG GAMMIX S70 SSD over on STH, but I specifically wanted to draw attention to something performance and firmware related. When I got my drive (from retail) it had firmware 3.2.7.3 loaded onboard, and when I filled the drive with data for testing performance was *not good*. I was confused because all the reviews I had seen on the S70 had it performing very well. Turns out, those reviewers either were looking at the larger drive, or were not filling it up as much as me, or both. I was able to reach out to ADATA and they referred me to firmware 3.2.9.1 which at the time was not posted publicly on their website, though now it is. And that firmware completely fixed the issue. You can look at a summarized before/after performance graph here and the updated firmware can be downloaded here. Please be aware that updating the firmware does erase the drive, which is unfortunate.[link] [comments] |
