This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Am I the only one that really dislikes RGB?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:22 PM PDT

I have seen many build tutorials and it's almost always RGB, but I think why? Does it give an advantage or is it just as decor?

EDIT: If you can change it to black or white it's not too bad but I really don't like the rainbow look.

Best way to get a RTX 3000 Card for MSRP

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:46 PM PDT

Basically I saw this place in San Francisco called "Central Compuer." They literally had like 30+ RTX 3000 series and RX 6000 series cards for msrp. But the catch was that you had to build a whole pc from them to get a card. Just wanted to put that out for people who actually want RTX 3000 for gaming 👌

Is the RTX 3080 Ti really worth $1199? It's double the price of the RTX 3070 Ti, but is it double the performance? Is the RTX 3080 already more than enough for 4K?

Get my new PC the Exact same as my Laptop

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 06:15 AM PDT

I have recently built a PC to replace my laptop and I need to get it the exact same (without doing the tedious move myself) as if I've just booted into my laptop. This means I would like to transfer everything to detail. All files the same, programs, settings, program settings and data etc.

Is there a program to do this?

    Thanks!

Looking for a new PC Case to fit my new cooler Noctua NH-D15S

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 07:18 AM PDT

Hello. Due to terrible conditions on graphic card market, few months ago I bought a prebuilt PC https://www.ebuyer.com/1140204-alphasync-rtx-3070-amd-ryzen-7-16gb-ram-1tb-hdd-480gb-ssd-as-d5474 , in my opinion it was a great deal, its gone up in price by 200 pounds since I bought it. However I have noticed a few problems... its clear costs have been cut whenever possible, and I've experienced a number number of small issues. Never buying a prebuilt again!

Due to issues with very high CPU temperature at full load, I have replaced the original cooler with something better, Noctua NH-D15S. Unfortunately it does not fit in my case.

    List of parts currently used:
    AMD Ryzen 7 3700X
    Noctua NH-D15S
    16GB Vengeance LPX 3200MHz (2x8GB)
    Corsair 480GB Force MP510 M.2 NVMe
    Seagate 1TB BarraCuda
    NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB
    Corsair 650W CV650
    ASUS PRIME B450M-A II

Sadly Noctua NH-D15S, is too big to fit in my case- right now I just have my pc running without the glass side, with cooler poking out a little. It looks hideous, I'd rather avoid dust gathering, and I'm worried about accidental damage.

I am looking to buy a new case. Airflow and simplicity of assembly are most important to me. Case should accommodate all the parts I'm currently using. I'd like to keep the price low, preferably below £100 ($140). However, if there is an exceptional, super amazing case, I am willing to spend a bit extra. Hard budget limit - £150 ($210)

    Power Supply Question!

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 08:17 AM PDT

If I have a Corsair 750w Bronze PSU and I bought a Gigabyte 850w Gold PSU, am I able to keep the old cables plugged into my PC components and only change out the actual PSU itself, without hurting anything?

I dont want to cable manage all my cables again haha.

Or are the cables different for different wattage PSU's?

    Thanks!

Memory is close to 100% after upgrading CPU

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 10:58 AM PDT

Hey y'all, I posted a while back about COD using 100% of my CPU and crashing at times. I just upgraded from a i5 6600k to i7 6700k and my CPU stays below 70% usage. But now I'm crashing and my memory is at 80-90%. This wasn't happening before. I have 16gb of 2400 RAM. Do I need to upgrade to higher speed RAM or just add another stick? Thank you :)

Decrease Performance After Bios Update 5900x + X570-i

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 09:59 AM PDT

    Quick question:

I updated my Asus X570-i motherboard from Bios 3202 to 3801 yesterday. Previously, rendering in Vray i was hitting 4.4ghz on all cores, I now only am able to get up to 4.375ghz. My cinebench score has also dropped about 200points from 21450 to 21200.

I have tried updating chipset driver, but it made no difference. All bios settings and PBO + Curve Optimizer are set to the same settings as before.

    PC sometimes fails to boot

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:46 PM PDT

Occasionally my PC fails to boot with Q-Code 02.

PC specs are as follows: -Motherboard is an ROG Crosshair VIII Hero -Ryzen 3700x -32GB 3600MHz G Skill Trident Z RAM - RTX 2070 Super

According to google it seems that Q-Code usually is power related. But I've noticed to fix it when it happens I need to reduce my RAM to 3400MHz or lower, let the PC boot, then go back into BIOS and change the D.O.C.P profile back to 3600MHz. Then it works fine for weeks. Then at some point it'll randomly fail to boot again and I have to do that all over again.

So is it just faulty RAM that can't run at its rated speed? Or could it be something else causing the issue?

Best monitor and "docking setup" idea for a productivity/some-gaming laptop.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 11:04 AM PDT

I'm trying to build a more ergonomic setup for myself due to neck/back issues, but this post is specifically about monitor product recommendations and docking station product/setup.

Please let me know if I should be posting this somewhere else, hoping for some help.

    My laptop: I have an HP Pavilion 15-bc series laptop (12gb RAM, i5-6300HQ @ 2.3ghz quad-core, GeForce GTX 960M graphics, 1080p IPS 15.6" display. 1TB WD SSD).

Uses: I use it for some casual gaming (CS:GO, games usually around 5 years old but some newer, not very competitive), as well as work/productivity. I can't justify getting a desktop.

Objective: I want to have a nicely-placed monitor, probably a comfortable keyboard, and also my current speakers and mouse, all of which I can quickly plug in and disconnect from my laptop (and of course the powercord/charger).

    Questions:

    1. What is a good monitor for this? Something that my laptop can handle and will be fast enough while looking nice - maybe I need something at 144hz(?)[afaik recommended for casual gaming], probably 24".
    2. Is there a way to do this with just 1 or 2 wires/"adapters" or docking station? Something that monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse (and maybe power) plug into, that in turn plugs right into the laptop?
    3. What keyboard would you recommend for this?

[I already have a 2.1 Klipsch speakers system that uses "aux" type cord to plug in and a G703 wireless mouse+Goliath mousepad. ]

Here's pics of my setup at the moment (been using the laptop as the monitor and keyboard [strains my shoulders/neck etc.] and it rests on an old laptop cooler).

Here's pics of my laptop's ports

    Thank you for any help

last part I have to decide. Ram Speed.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:28 PM PDT

When is it useful to use a RAM 3600 cl 16 memory instead of 3200 cl 16 in intel processors.

I have seen a review and it seems to me that it is not useful.

Do you consider that it is not worthwhile to buy faster memories?

Is there something I'm not understanding? I am totally new in PC Bulding

    Thank you.

My quest to transform my gaming pc quiet

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:26 PM PDT

Back in January I built a gaming pc specifically for call of duty. Got lucky on a few items so my quest to build a gaming pc for the first time in over 10 years was on. Thinking back to when I first did this years ago, I always remembered Corsair being good.

Ended up with a Corsair 4000d airflow, Msi tomahawk mono, amd 5600x processor, and evga 3080 ftw3.

Fast forward to last month and I got into mining. Nothing crazy but why not dual use my desktop? It lives in my room as I don't have room for an office so silence became key. Lots and lots of headache and cuss words but wanted to share what I learned.

A quiet case is the foundation. Quiet doesn't mean you have to sacrifice air flow. I ended up with a Be Quiet Pure Base 500DX. Compared to the Corsair, the metal is thicker and it has sound deadening. Rattles are the worst.

Noctua fans aren't the quietest. I tried them all. I found the Arctic P series fans to be the best for my use. They need to spin faster to move the air, but they are silent.

Rubber and silicone is underrated. Silicone mounts for fans. Rubber gaskets when a mount can't be used. Anything to prevent metal on metal contact.

GPUs are loud as hell. On my RTX 3080, I took a shroud for a XC3 and modified it to fit the FTw3. This shroud allows for 2x 120mm fans. I then attached 2x Arctic p12s on it.

AIOs are loud. The pump is the noise. I thought using it would be quiet but I was wrong. Went to a noctua cooler. Switched the fan to a P14. Good to go.

Use as little fans as possible. I checked hwinfo after all mods. Once everything was in check, I didn't add more.

Your desk can cause noise. Namely if it's wood. Wood reverberates sound. I ended up foaming mine to where it can't be seen but doesn't rattle. It's a dedicated small wood table that housed my PCs only.

Aside from using only SSD or nvme, that's it. My computer is nearly silent now with amazing thermals. The gpu mod was the biggest reducer. Then the aio to air. Replacing noctua fans to p series finalized it.

I'll get pics and a better write up when I get home, but I wanted to help someone out.

I forgot to add, where the gpu mounts to the case is a rattle point too. Never thought of that til I found it.

Does the Corsair 4000D case have pre installed standoffs?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:26 PM PDT

I want to make certain before I slap the mobo in there. It seems like it does but I'm not totally sure. It does come with some standoffs screw, but only three.

80C a bad temp for my GPU?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 12:15 PM PDT

I have a 1660S that I'm trying to squeeze more performance out of since it's what I'm stuck with at the moment. With a decent overclock (around +170MHz which seems to be as far as I can push it for stability), a slight memory overclock of +200MHz, and also a slight undervolt the stability and performance seem good but the card is consistently hitting 79-80C during benchmarks and intensive games.

Are these temps OK to run at for extended periods of time? Tbh I don't care too much if this card burns out in the long run as long as it lasts me until I can get an upgrade but who knows when that will be at this point.

About to pull the trigger, last recommendations ?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2021 01:25 PM PDT

    Hey guys,

I'm finnally switching from a laptop to a big computer. I've searched for a while a pre build pc since the graphic cards are so expensive but I couldn't find one that would suit me. So I'm going on the second hand market for the graphic card and I think I will have better result. Plus I like the idea of building my computer myself and choosing everything. So this is what I came up with.

My goal is to play most games (Apex legends, Vermintide 2, Total war warhammer) at 1080p and 144 hz if possible.

Do I need to add anything ? How is the overall set up ? I found the 1080 at 280 euros. It seems like an ok price considering the circumstances am I right ? My total budget is around 1000 euros without the screen.
