This thread is for simple questions that don't warrant their own thread (although we strongly suggest checking the sidebar and the wiki before posting!). Please don't post involved questions that are better suited to a [Build Help], [Build Ready] or [Build Complete] post.
Examples of questions suitable for here:

    • Is this RAM compatible with my motherboard?
    • I'm thinking of getting a ≤$300 graphics card. Which one should I get?
    • I'm on a very tight budget and I'm looking for a case ≤$50

Remember that Discord is great places to ask quick questions as well: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/wiki/livechat

How to build LTE capability into a PC: The guide I wish I'd had.

    Posted: 15 May 2021 08:42 PM PDT

I'm in a relatively unique position that makes it more beneficial to have my PC connected to a cellular network rather than Wi-Fi. When I started trying to figure out how to accomplish this, there were very few resources online to help me since it's a pretty niche need. Now that I've figured it out myself, I want to share my experience and what I've learned by creating the guide I wish I'd had. I realize that there are very few people who would ever need to have an LTE capable desktop PC, but I was one of those few and wanted to share what I found. Hopefully, if anyone else ever needs to do this, I can save them a little trouble :)

Hardware: You will need an LTE module, and a PCI-E adapter for the module.

The LTE module I used was this Sierra Wireless Airprime MC7750 off of Amazon. Make sure you get a module that matches your carrier! I didn't know that they were carrier specific and ordered their MC7700 model, which only works with AT&T, and had to exchange it for the afore-mentioned MC7750 so that it would work with my carrier, Verizon.

The adapter I used was this BQZYX one off of Newegg. I will tell you that it can be rather tricky to get the SIM card in and out of this particular adapter. However, that's not something I'll need to do very often, so it suits my needs.

Obviously, you will also need a SIM card that is hooked up to an active data plan.

Once you have inserted the module and SIM card into the adapter, connect the gold snap connectors from the adapter to the "MAIN" and "AUX" ports on the module. The "GPS" one can be left empty. These are the only three ports on my module. My adapter requires both SATA power input and a motherboard USB connection. Save yourself some trouble and get everything attached to the adapter before attaching the adapter itself to the motherboard.

EDIT: The SIM port on the adapter is typically only for standard SIM cards, which are bigger than the much more common micro or nano SIM cards. You'll need a simple adapter to get your SIM to fit in the slot. Fortunately, the adapter I used comes with micro and nano SIM card adapters included.

Software and configuration: This is where it can get tricky. If you turn your PC on and the module is not active (in my setup, this is when the lights on the adapter don't come on), It's likely that the voltages of the adapter and module do not match. My adapter has a voltage switch that makes it easy to change its voltage to match the module. I did not find any voltage indicator on my module, so I just had to try all three positions of the voltage switch to determine the correct one. In my setup, this was the third position, 3.3 volts. Do not change the position of the switch while your PC is running! This warning is printed on the adapter itself, but it's worth mentioning here too. Don't do it!

Once you've got your hardware up and running, you'll need the Windows driver for the module. The Sierra Wireless ones are pretty well organized and easy to locate on their site. The adapter shouldn't need any drivers for itself. If the driver installation was successful, you should be able to see the module in Device Manager under Network Adapters.

At this point, you may see that the option for cellular shows up in Settings, but also that the toggle to enable it is greyed out and in the off position. This is when you'll need to navigate to Settings -> Airplane Mode and turn airplane mode on, then back off. after several seconds, you should see cellular toggle itself on. I honestly just stumbled into this while screwing around in the settings trying anything that might work. IT, baby!

Once cellular is enabled, Windows should attempt to get you connected. You can see its status by clicking on the connection icon in the taskbar. It will likely end up saying "No service", in which case you'll just need to reboot your PC and let it try again. Just restarting didn't seem to work for me, so I had to fully shut down my PC and turn it back on. After rebooting, you'll need to repeat the process of turning airplane mode off and back on. I actually still have to do this after each reboot. It may say "No service" again, in which case you just reboot again. It can sometimes take three or four reboots before it decides to work. When I first set it up, it worked for about an hour, then went back to saying "No service". But after a few reboots, it stopped... stopping.

After a few days of using it with no issues, I booted my PC up and tried to enable cellular as usual, and it said "No APN active. Please add an APN and try again.". Don't ask me why it let me use it up to this point with no APN. To add an APN, navigate to Settings -> Cellular -> Advanced Options -> Add an APN. It will bring up a form with several fields, but the only one you need to fill in is "APN". Here, you must type a specific name provided by your carrier. I found this nice page of names on Verizon's site ("vzwinternet" did the trick for me).

After all that, you should be all set! :)

Like I said before, there are probably very few people who will need this guide, but hopefully I can help those few people out a bit. If you've got anything to add, please let me know!

EDIT: Several people have suggested that I use an LTE router, or plug an LTE modem into a standard router.

While this would do the trick for most people, under my plan Verizon would recognize it as a hotspot and limit my data to 15 GB/month, rather than letting me use my unlimited data. However, it may work differently for other plans or carriers, so it's certainly worth researching first. If this is a possibility for you, it would absolutely be the more straightforward (and possibly cheaper) option. I also really like having all my hardware built in to my PC.

All this aside, this was just a really cool project! I wanted to share my research and experience since there are very few people who have tried this, and even fewer who have posted anything about their findings online.

    Check your fans direction

    Posted: 16 May 2021 10:59 AM PDT

Just cleaned out my case after 1.5 years. It's elevated from the floor, has dust filters and in general rather dust-free environment making "de-dusting" a not so regular task.

1.5 years ago I updated mainboard + CPU to a new AMD Ryzen based built. Obviously cleaned out the case nicely. I immediately realized it's dustier than usually especially around the top-back where I have a 120mm rear and 140mm top exhaust. I proceeded to clean the case and fans, compressed air is your friend and then tested was was pretty obvious. Yes, both fans where actually intakes not exhausts blowing air right back at the CPU cooler (working hard to keep the hot air in).

it's now fixed. never monitored CPU temps so can't talk about that effect but what was immediately obvious is how much more quiet my PC is now. CPU cooler probably not running 100% all the time.

    Is 650W enough for a 6800XT?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 01:34 PM PDT

Hey guys, I swapped my RTX 3070 for a 6800XT (Sapphire Nitro+ SE) with an EVGA GD650 Gold Rated PSU.

However after I plugged in the 6800XT, the fans don't spin and there is no display on the screen.

Is this likely due to the PSU's lack of power? As I read that although 700W is recommended, 650W should still at least be sufficient for the card to run.

(I did the DDU driver uninstallation already)

    Specs:

Ryzen 5 3600 MSI B450 Gaming Carbon Pro AC Corsair vengeance RGB PRO 16GB 3200C16 LEXAR NVME 1TB 650W EVGA GD650 PSU

PC freezes when running Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool - Resistive mouse in desktop

    Posted: 16 May 2021 01:06 PM PDT

Hi, I have a problem with my mouse being floaty and sluggish, this can even be felt in desktop and even more in games. When I run the Intel Processor Diagnostic Tool my PC freezes while on the CPU Load fragment, maybe that's something related to the bad mouse movement? I don't get crashes while playing but when running the tool the PC freezes. I thought it might be a bad CPU or motherboard, I have replaced both with no positive effect so I went on replacing the RAM and PSU and the issue is still there.

Need help understanding Intel CPU's , and the I9-10850K

    Posted: 16 May 2021 07:36 AM PDT

Hey everyone. I'm building another PC, however this time I'm using an Intel cpu. I've always used AMD, however due to price scalping and Ryzen cpu's being out of stock, and Intel having and imbedded gpu, I decided to make the switch. I'm currently looking at the I7-10700K for my build which will be mostly a NAS / Server for the home. But I see the i9-10850K is about $60 more and the i9-10900 is about $50 more that the I7. so I know the "K" series are unlocked cpu's and the I9's are 10 core. But I haven't heard about the I9-10850K before. I'm guessing Intel made the 850 just cause?? So does anyone have any insight on the 10850K, seems like its worth spending the $60 over the 10700k? Also I'm not understanding the $80 price jump from the 10850k to the 10900K. Am I missing something with the 10850k? like does it not support 3200mhz ram, or four DDR4 stick? Is there some architecture difference? I'm planning to pair the cpu with a Z490 board, and use a Noctua nh-d15 for cooling, so hopefully I have this right, I was hoping not having to go into the AIO realm since the system will be on 24/7. Sorry if my post is a bit all over the place, hard to get my thoughts / question out properly on this one, but I do appreciate any help, thoughts, insight on this.

    Thank You.

How do you install apps on your HDD?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 12:08 PM PDT

From what I've seen in the pc building community, people can get SSDs and HDDs for their rigs. I was wondering. If you guys have to reformat your HDDs or make them bootable in order for apps to be installed on them? I currently have a laptop with a 250GB SSD and a 2TB HDD and I can't install apps on my HDD. So I was wondering when you guys build your rigs if you have to specify what your bootable drive is or what happens when your SSD is full?

    Thanks guys!

Have a questions for motherboards Asrock x570

    Posted: 16 May 2021 01:29 PM PDT

    Hello everyone.

I'm looking into buying a new motherboard. I found a few for a good price.

    Asrock x570 PRO4

    Asrock x570 Phantom Gaming 4

    Both support 2 x NVME SSD M.2 GEN4 and 8 sata ports.

My first question is, will both of my M.2 SSDes work at full speed and second, will any of sata ports be affected?

    Already have:

    Ryzen 7 5800x

    2 x Corsair Force MP600 1TB

    2 x 16 G. Skill Trident Z Neo 3600MHz CL16 RAM memory

    Thank you very much.

Did mess up? Bought RAM before the CPU based on something AMD said about 5900X.

    Posted: 16 May 2021 03:32 AM PDT

So, I bought a 2x32GB set of G.Skill 4000Mhz CL18 DDR4 late last year after reading that AMD said it was optimal for the 5900X.

I still don't have a CPU, but Micro Center has 5950Xs in. I was reading this morning that the 5950X is optimal with 3600Mhz CL16.

Did I screw up? Should I get 32GB of this lower latency DDR4 and try to sell the other, or should I just stay with the 64GB of 4000Mhz CL18?

    Thanks.

Why do good graphics cards run older games worse than bad graphics cards?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 01:46 AM PDT

Basically I had to downgrade my graphics card in order to be able to play CS 1.6 without constant fps drops. I had AMD RX 550 4gb graphics, CS:GO runs flawlessly on it, but CS 1.6 for some reason had huge FPS drops from 60 to 30-40 every time there was a lot of objects on a map or night vision was on, making the game completely unplayable. So I downgraded to my old graphics card Nvidia GT 710 2gb and CS 1.6 runs constantly at 60 fps, not a single fps drop even with the most demanding maps and night vision.

What is happening? Shouldn't it be in reverse order?

Can I salvage an m2 nvme that had a corrupted file/boot loop issue?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 11:33 AM PDT

I have a 1tb Samsung nvme that had a boot loop issue so I changed ssd's, now it all works. My mobo has 2 nvme slots so I can fit it. Can I reformat the drive to make it work or erase all of what I had on it? The drive is about a year old, which I figure is very short for an ssd's lifespan.

FPS doesn't change when I lower settings

    Posted: 16 May 2021 09:48 AM PDT

    Troubleshooting Help:

    Parts List CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz

    Motherboard: Asus PRIME Z370-A

RAM: GSkill Trident Z 16.0 GB

    GPU: GeForce 1080Ti

    PSU: Corsair AX1200i

    Describe your problem.

So I've been having this issue for awhile where my FPS in my games is severely lower than I feel they should be. I mainly say this because I have friends with lower specs than me but get better FPS in games. The FPS on my games also doesn't change when i raise or lower the settings. I can be running a game on High and Low and will have the same FPS. My main games at the moment are League of Legends and FFXIV and in both I struggle to run them at over 100 FPS somedays. I've been monitoring my CPU and GPU usage and in games like league I barely use 10% of either of them whereas in final fantasy I'm only using 10% of my CPU and 99% of my GPU. I just feel like I shouldn't be struggling to run games with a 1080TI and a I7-8700k My Temps are also not going crazy either and are at acceptable levels with my GPU is at 64C and my CPU at 41C (while playing league).

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

    • Updated drivers on GPU and Motherboard
    • Turning/unplugging 2nd monitor
    • changing Refresh Rates on my monitor (is currently at 144hz)
    • Clean wipe of PC with new install of windows

    New monitor turns black randomly

    Posted: 16 May 2021 08:32 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

To start off, if this question is not meant for this subreddit please let me know.

I just got a new monitor which is 1080p and 144hz which is a big upgrade from my last one (1366x768 60hz). Every now and then my screen randomly turns black during any activity whether it's gaming or just browsing the web. This did not happen with my previous monitor so it most likely is a flawed monitor, however I read online that this could also be a psu issue. My psu is a rosewill glacier 80+ bronze 500 watts. What do you guys think the issue is and what can i do? GPU is an rx570 and cpu is i39100F if it helps.

    Thanks

What are the differences between these two Chinese boards? Looking to help a young man build his first (cheap) PC.

    Posted: 16 May 2021 08:28 AM PDT

I'm helping a kid build a very budget second hand PC for some Fortnite and Minecraft and such. He's not well off so we're going with some older stuff. We got a 680 OC, a 3770k, 16gb dual channel DDR3 ram, case, PSU etc, everything except a motherboard. I had an MSI Z77-GD65 to give him which unfortunately gave out due to lightning damage, and it's been quite a challenge getting another LGA1155 DDR3 board for him because they just aren't around any more and the second hand ones in my country are shady and price gouged to ridiculous levels right now. I came across these Chinese boards from a brand I've never heard of. Huananzi. We're not looking for quality or longevity here, just something to get him started. Watched some reviews on the brand and the consensus seems to be "okay for the price" which will do.

The one I saw which fits our price range and specifications is the Huananzi B75. But there are two versions of it on the website which cost the same more or less. I don't know how to discern what the difference is so I'm hoping you guys can help us out. These are the two boards:

    https://m.banggood.com/HUANANZHI-B75-Desktop-Motherboard-M-ATX-LGA1155-for-Core-i3-i5-i7-CPU-Support-2+8G-DDR3-Memory-Black-p-1690386.html?act_poa=SKUF31647&cur_warehouse=CN&rmmds=detail-bottom-alsolike

    https://m.banggood.com/HUANANZHI-B75-PLUS-V3_1-Motherboard-M-ATX-For-Intel-LGA-1155-i3-i5-i7-E3-DDR3-1333-or-1600MHz-16GB-SATA3_0-USB3_0-PCI-E-VGA+HDMI-GAME-p-1803806.html?utm_source=googleshopping&utm_source=googleshopping&utm_medium=cpc_organic&utm_medium=cpc_bgs&gmcCountry=ZA&utm_content=minha&utm_content=xibei&utm_campaign=minha-za-en-mb&utm_campaign=xibei-ssc-za-category-replenish1-0206-2021&currency=ZAR&cur_warehouse=CN&createTmp=1&ad_id=496927608862&gclid=CjwKCAjwhYOFBhBkEiwASF3KGWXYt0RCTnV5jjr5iBtyeQRa8z-snUdckJMlitJkgh0dmdr9srmMSBoCIJsQAvD_BwE

The first one is the b75 and the second one is the b75 plus 3.1. I would assume the second one is just a newer version and would work with what we have but I'm not sure. Would appreciate some clarity and certainty on this before I order it for him. Thanks.

Stacking 2 x 3.5 on top of each other?

    Posted: 16 May 2021 01:00 PM PDT

Hey, I want to upgrade my sffpc to 2 x 3.5 HDDs (currently 1) for RAID mirroring, but mounting points are at a premium in my Coolermaster NR200. I currently have a 3.5 HDD mounted on its side like this (my cables are tidier, I swear) and I would like to add another 3.5 drive to my build.

I know some people use the radiator bracket to mount them, but that's not really possible since I'm running a NH-U12A, which leaves just enough space to mount the side panel.

One solution I found was this kind of bracket, but unfortunately it's all out of stock in my country.

Is there some other alternative way of doing this, or is there some other kind of mounting device similar to that bracket that I can look for that allows me to stack 2 HDDs on top of each other? (I guess I could look for 2.5 HDDs and mount them in the front, but I'd be hard pressed to find affordable ones larger than 4TB)
