I just gained -40 degrees on my motherboards chip by disassembling my whole build and realizing that there is a thermal pad/grease missing!

    Posted: 08 May 2021 02:24 AM PDT

Also posted here with more details:

My X570 chip was sitting at 90° C with normal use, I have disassembled my whole build and realized that there was neither a thermal pad nor thermal grease applied on it. So I put a 1.5mm thermal pad in place, the result is -40ish degrees. This is insane. Board: Asus Crosshair VIII Impact. : Amd (reddit.com)

Here is a picture of the motherboard, taken immediately after removing the backplate and the chipset enclosure: https://imgur.com/a/EJnsi2E

Edit: I've been referring to other users having reported this issue before and fixing it, this is the thread that helped me pin it down and resolve it, so credits go out to this guy for the solution: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/ep7i50/how_to_resolve_chipset_thermals_on_the_asus_rog/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Well, to be clear, I've been using it since 2018, at 59Hz.

My parents let me buy my dream computer

    Posted: 07 May 2021 07:02 PM PDT

Awhile back, I posted on this sub about how my parents wouldn't let me buy parts for my dream computer, and how they thought it was unsafe. Thanks to many of you (I can't believe that post blew up!) I was able to convince them that it was safe to buy the parts, and they even wanted to help me on it.

So, today I finally got all of the parts picked up. And I was even able to score an rx 580 at retail price.

We plan to get started on the build tomorrow. I'll keep posted with the final build!

Once again, thank you everyone for the suggestions and help on my PC building dreams. There were so many times I felt lost and confused, but people here could almost always answer my most stupid questions.

Does turning your pc on and off several times a day cause any wear or damage?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 07:07 AM PDT

I feel like such a noob asking this and I did research but still can't figure out if modern pc parts actually take any damage or wear from turning on and off regularly, I have an irrational fear of sleep mode because I see my ram working but my cpu fan not working and my brain assumes the cpu will overheat, so I would prefer if I could just turn off my pc several times a day, my m.2 drive is so fast its literally less than 10 seconds to get to windows from off.

Need some advice on this used PC sale - 5800x and 3070

    Posted: 08 May 2021 09:04 AM PDT

There's this guy trying to sell a 'used' gaming PC in my area - 5800x and a Gigabyte 3070 OC. Other specs include 16GB 3200Mhz RAM, 240mm Deepcool AIO, 750W Gigabyte Gold PSU. He had first wanted $2100 for the build but now since he has an urgent need for cash, he has slashed the price to $1900. The parts were bought in March 2021 and he has all the receipts.

My problem with the build is its using an average ASRock B450 motherboard for some reason and only has a 256GB SATA SSD and a 2TB HDD. Given the current situation, it looks like a good deal but I wanted your opinions. Would you take it for $1900?

So I downgraded my build from an rx 580 to a gtx 480 but my pc won't even power up with it, without it does. What could that mean? Does my pc not stand nvidia's cards? PCI compatibility? It just doesn't work?

What's the difference between the different USBs?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:43 PM PDT

I was watching a Linus tech tips video about a Walmart PC and he mentioned how no pc in 2018 should have USB 2 in the front panel, my PC case is pretty old so I don't know how this will affect my overall (future) build.

Okay, I know some of you wants to upgrade your RAM from Single Channel to Dual Channel and you wonder if you can get more FPS etc. I did benchmark video before and after upgrading my RAM so you can see difference.

Computer turns on for half a second then fades off

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:39 AM PDT

Hi! Today I just got my new motherboard and cpu, motherboard is MSI MPG Z490 GAMING PLUS and cpu is an 17-10700k.

I finally finished installing everything and when I went to turn it on, it flashed on for half a second and all the lights that did turn on, didn't instantly turn off, they faded out. This only happens when I turn off the switch on the PSU, unplug and plugin the power cord, turn the switch back on and then try the power button again. If I don't nothing happens after the initial power button press.

The PSU was just working today with my old motherboard. I tried reseating the RAM and GPU, I individually tested each ram stick. All of the wires are good and in the correct spots. I'm not sure what could be the issue, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

What GPU would be a right balance of cost to performance to no bottleneck an i3 8100?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 06:18 AM PDT

So i needed a PC two years ago and despite me recommending that we build one, he went ahead and bought a prebuilt PC (Dell Vostro 3470- i3 8100, Intel UHD 630, 4GBx1 RAM). Last year, we upgraded the ram to 8gb (4x2). Im considering adding a dedicated GPU to it, but given the size of the build, i can only go for a GT 1030 2gb gddr5. I only play Valorant and GTA5, But i also do edit videos and photos. I work with 1080p videos for now. Any suggestions? Would it be better if i wait for a Low Profile 1650 (currently out of stock for quite a while now) or should i just go with the 1030 and accept that it isss what it issss?

Will this run Minecraft Bedrock 60 fps, while recording OBS 1080p60?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:43 PM PDT

So I've decided to get a new pc, and I have ordered a gtx 1060-3gb (dual oc version) + r5 1600AF.My friend has said that this should run 1080p60 OBS while running 1080p60 not just Bedrock, but Java as well. I am starting to doubt it however, though I am sure I can do 720p60.

I will provide more information about this PC if needed like the SSD or else

If this doesn't run it, what CPU or GPU should I upgrade this with? Obs and Minecraft are both CPU Intensive

Buying a GPU on eBay vs. My Own

    Posted: 08 May 2021 09:50 AM PDT

I am in need of a GPU. I have a GTX 1070 8gb back home with around 4 years of use. It might be a month before I get a hold of it so I want to get a cheap GPU meanwhile. I was browsing eBay and they were selling used GTX 1080 Ti 11 gb for less than 100 USD. Is this a reasonable price? I'm skeptical because that seems too cheap given the market (and there are some listings of around 500 USD) but it would make more sense to buy the 1080 Ti and keep using that one instead of my old 1070. How efficient is buying a used GPU? What is the best move here? I will eventually try to get my hands on an RTX once and if the market calms down.

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for their input and making me realize it's probably a scam. I ended up deciding to switch over from an Intel i9 10850K to an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X and since the latter doesn't have integrated graphics I got a GT 1030 for around 200 meanwhile. It's new so I hope I can sell it for ~120 bucks when I get my old 1070 in around a month. I decided on buying a dedicated GPU because I run two 4k monitors and even though it's not great it's better than the integrated intel GPU.

7 Year Old AIO Died what should I pick for my next cooler?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:24 AM PDT

I currently have an i5-4670k overclocked at 4.3 Ghz and a GTX 960.

A lot of people say that AIOs aren't really worth it so right now I am very conflicted as to which I should pick. Should I go air or liquid(240mm)?

    Last cooler was a Kühler h20 620.

And also the front panel on my case is just tempered glass so not much airflow from the front.

    Better CPU or GPU?

    Posted: 08 May 2021 11:12 AM PDT

I am building my first pc but have found myself at a crossroad.

My store is selling GPU and CPUs in "packs" to avoid scalping. My options are a Ryzen 7 3700x with an RTX 3070 or an i-7 10700 with an RTX 3060TI.

My understanding is that i7 is a bit better than R7 while 3070 is a bit better than 3060TI.

This pc will mainly be used for games, coding and blender.

I'd appreciate any help or input for which package I should choose.

    CPU / GPU difference

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:21 PM PDT

Before i get trash talked.. I know, im not good with pc parts and what not.

Now, i have an Nvidia RTX 3070 graphics card, and for some reason I dont feel like its properly set up. I mean, everything works, no flickering, shutdowns etc. but it just seems like it hasn't reached it fullest potential. When playing CS:GO I had between 80-130 fps with high video settings. I've followed several tutorials to increase fps and i've increased the fps to 150-180 which is nice. But now i'm wondering if my CPU is "too outdated" compared to the new graphics card?

    My CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7700K CPU @ 4.20GHz

If you could help clarify some things regarding fully optimizing my GPU, i'd be really grateful :)

(By the way, i run Cyberpunk between 40-60 FPS, but i know the game itself has a lot of optimization issues)

    Thanks!

Looking to optimise case airflow for an O11D

    Posted: 08 May 2021 01:05 PM PDT

So I've got a 5900x cooled with an ARCTIC Liquid 240, and a 3090 TUF OC, which I plan to mount horizontally. My AIO has two fans, and I've 5 others (all Noctua NF P12 Redux) I'll be putting in the case.

What I'm thinking right now is side-mounting the rad with its two fans, and then having 3 bottom intake fans (obviously the case will never be on carpet) and 2 top exhaust fans. Is this the best layout for keeping both CPU and GPU cool? Gamer's Nexus found the best results with side intakes rather than bottom, but their fan layout and quantity was different to mine, and I feel like sucking the GPU exhaust through my rad isn't a recipe for ideal thermals.

    I'd appreciate any advice/guidance y'all have!
